View 18 RepliesIm trying to run an rsync command which copies a backup of a server services folder using a remote computer. The backup folder of services resides on the main system disk.
AR-ADL-MBP1-John:~ john$ sudo rsync -va -e --delete ssh admin@10.105.141.66:/Volumes/Server HD_mail/Data Store Backups /Volumes/ARINA temp
errors out with building file list ... rsync: link_stat "/Users/john/ssh" failed: No such file or directory (2) rsync: link_stat "/Users/john/admin@mail.arina.biz/Volumes/Server HD_mail/Data Store Backups" failed: No such file or directory (2)
I've also tried to open the server in finder and run the rsync without ssh. This works for non system disks but get permissions errors on this system disk rsync: readdir("/Volumes/Server HD_mail/Data Store Backups/M-W-F/Data_Stores/mail/259F2CAC-D0EB-4348-B85F-1257F8242E87"): Permission denied (13)
Couldn't find it anywhere! Did Apple take this off on purpose? Are they planning something new?
And also something to mention, Server Admin 10.5.6 and Apple Remote Desktop 3.2 DOES NOT WORK on Snow Leopard. The only way to manage my Server is to use Screen Sharing app <-- IT SUCK.
I'm looking for a system that can track about 50 MBP's providing both remote wipe as part of an overall security protocol, and also remote screen/desktop for admin purposes. I looked at preyproject.com but it looks like they only do remote wiping/tracking. that I don't want something locked to a single user, it should be centrally managed.

I think I have found a flaw in OSX 10.6.4 file copying..I normall back up my files, by dragging from a folder on my HD to an identical folder on my external HD.The folder I am copying has 86 files in it, but there are only about two dozen new files added since my last back up.I have been telling it by the dialogue box, not to replace identical files in the back up folder, and clicking the check box to apply to all."but when I press the dont copy button, in the copy progress box it says it is copying 86 files. WTF is going on...!@#$%^&*().

View 2 Replies View RelatedI accidentally deleted all of the files on a friend's portable drive, when using terminal to try to delete a very large folder (the Trash Can was not working it was so large)--since the files/folders were very recently deleted I am looking into data recovery software to get the files back. The problem is that the HFS file system seems to be designed in such a way that once a folder/file is deleted, it is very difficult to recover it's name even if its data can be recovered, so most data recovery programs (such as FileSalvage) will recover only known file types and give them a a number (such as 0004.jpg). Does anyone know of any Mac/HFS recovery software that has found a way around this particular issue and can recover data with the folder structure/file names intact?
View 2 Replies View RelatedEverything is running very, very slowly. In the Terminal, top shows me that process 15, DirectoryService, is using between 45 and 248%(!) of my cpu, and hdiutil is also using much more than I expect. What is causing this, and, more importantly, how can I make it stop. It is making my computer unusable.
It doesn't seem to matter what applications are running or if I have Web Sharing on or off. I suspected it was the flood of attempted logins from having Web Sharing on, but turning it off doesn't make any difference.

Running OSX 10.5 and I encounter this problem on a frequent basis. The symptoms are the beach ball when coming out of sleep. I run onyx and find an invalid volume directory. Running first aid from the boot cd fixes it but it always comes back within a few days.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a large music library that I have amassed over the years, but when I began ripping CDs there was no artwork on the iPod so it didn't matter, but now it would be nice to have it. I purchased a program called coverscout that finds artwork and automatically attaches it to the songs, but I have a problem. Somehow I have made every song read only. The program can't write the artwork to the tracks unless I change each one to rw. I tried to change just the directory, but that doesn't work.
Is there a terminal command to change all files in a directory to read/write? Just for your information all the songs are organized in a folder called music then subfolder of the artist and then a subfolder to that of the albums. It would be great to just change it all and then when I'm done change it back to read only.
I would like if it is possible to specify the destination folder for safari downloads before it starts.
So that a pop-up box will appear when I click a download.
Im trying to set up NetJukebox on XAMMP and I need to paste in the file references to where my music is held on the HDD. Now, on a PC I would just be something D:/Music/ or something, with 'D' referncing the drive where the folder Music is held. The trouble Im having is doing this but with the 'Macintosh HD' drive, because I dont think that /User/*UserNameHere*/Music/ will work by itself. Is there a way I can include the drive name as well in that folder reference?

Hey everyone, i'm starting to learn active directory in windows server 2003 but what i want to do with parallels if possible is setup a XP VM so i can see the effect of the changes/rules i setup in active directory.
Is this possible within Parallels or is it a pipe dream as it would be a fantastic learning tool.
The hardware it would be running on is a 24inch 1st gen iMac with 2GB of Ram.
What do you guys think and if it can be done what do i need to make sure of when it comes to setting up parallels?
i have a directory with many sub directories and files. I cant back it up to a dvd without breaking it up, but thats way to alkward. Is there an app that will allow me to just create a backup of the entire directory, over 2 dvds if necessary without requiring me to split the directory in two?

View 3 Replies View Relateda working Users directory on a volume other than the startup volume?I just bought an SSD for my Mac Pro that I intend to use as my OSX boot drive. Because it's much smaller than my current HDD startup volume, I want to only keep system files and apps on it. To do this I will install a fresh copy of Leopard on the SSD and then migrate my apps to it. Can I tell OSX to place the Users folder on another volume? My hope is to copy the Users directory from the current startup volume to this new location (after first creating user accounts with the same exact names/short names).

View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm trying create 200 MB rar files out of a 700 + MB directory. When I check "split archive" and select "user defined" under the volume size dropdown and click create rar, it creates 500+ rar archives! Nowhere does it ask me how big I want the volume size for "user defined". Does anyone know how to use this app? I mean, I know how to alternatively archive into 200 mb parts (zip them, split & concat the zip file) but that requires the user to unarchive twice.

One for the OS, the other for my home directory.
It ran fine the last few weeks, only once (or maybe twice) I was unable to login, but entering the password again seemed to help.
I restarted today, and again, I can't login.
I ran Single User Mode and /sbin/fsck -fy , also started up in Verbose Mode and also used Target Disk Mode and repaired both volumes with my iBook's Disk Utility.

Also when you first open the .zip, there's an empty folder called __MACOSX. How to keep the whole package a little more clean?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have seen that is rare in the Mac community to define a secondary partition on disk to hold the Home Directory leaving a partition for the operating system only. I would like to know your opinion on the matter of having a partition for the Home Directory as in my case it brought many benefits to me like every time you need to try a new installation of Mac OS from scratch, you must format the partition, which involves obtaining a prior backup of the entire contents of the Home Directory for later recall. This is not necessary if the Home Directory has its own partition. So do the Settings are also conserved. What do you think about it?, Do any of you use a separate partition for your Home Directory?
