I am trying to network my mac snow leopard to my xp machine, so that I can use synergy, but my instructions for networking include a "directory access" panel that I cannot find in snow leopard.

I don't know much about networks (I'm a Mac girl; my knowledge of networks pretty much consists of "plug in Airport"). I don't know how they're blocking the sites they're blocking. Can anyone give me a concise, "go here, put in these numbers" kind of solution to ensure that my browser has free access today? I'm willing to pay for a pay service or app, if that's necessary. Not terribly worried about other ports being open; I can live without iChat if I can reach Gmail & Facebook via the web. using whatever the latest version of 10.6 is.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm in Afghanistan and our internet service consists of a large dish, connected to a series of switches, with lan cables that terminate in individual rooms. Normal service includes plugging in the cable to your machine, where you get a login screen, allowing you to purchase internet / log in.
When I try to plug instead into my AirPort Express, I can only get the internet to work when I place it in bridge mode. I'd like to get it to assign IP addresses to whatever I add to my network so that I can use both my MBP and my iPhone wirelessly. However, when I try to use it as a DHCP device, I can never get any device to find a web page, etc.
I have two computers (Mac and PC) connected to a cable modem via Belkin router. Both can connect to the Internet.
My Power Mac G5 2Ghz has two internal hard drives. My primary boot drive has Leopard 10.5.6 and the secondary has Tiger 10.4.11.
I had the built in Firewall set for "Allow only Essential Services" then I changed it back to "Allow all incoming connections" before I installed Netbarrier X5. My access to the internet and router/control panel was fine.
Then suddenly my G5 (Leopard) was no longer able to log into the router/control panel only the PC (Windows XP). Tried Safari and Firefox and both come back with the error message "Safari can't connect to server."
When I boot the G5 into "Safe Mode" it is the same thing, can connect to the internet but have no access to the router control panel. So it can't be Netbarrier.
But If I my G5 reboot with my second drive that has Tiger. My access to the router's control panel is restored.
I only really wanted the ability to create a shortcut to 'Love' tracks on last.fm, so i hid the dock icon, taskbar icon and desktop icon. Now I want to access the preferences panel, but i cant reach it. How can i get to it?

Everything else in System Preference works, but when I click on Security the program would freeze then shut itself down.....

I am trying to hook a macbook pro up to a windows workgroup. I follow the directions to go into utilities and then Directory Access. The Directory Access is not there.

However, I cannot find the 'directory access' which is supposed to be in my utilities file- I have 'directory utility' but this has nowhere for me to enter the name of my windows workgroup (as per networking guide says I should) and thus cannot enter it into finder>go>connect to server!

It doesn't seem to matter that I haven't shared that folder. This seems like a HUGE security hole to me. What am I doing wrong?

They say its under (Applications > Utilities > Directory Access). I dont see it on my mac. All I see is Directory and Directory Utility thats it. I have the most up to date mac 10.5.6.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have recently bought a Mac Book Pro. This is my first experience with a modern computer from Apple and in very first contact with Mac OS "Snow Leopard".
I am trying to configure that Mac to share the resources of my Windows XP small network at home. For that I have followed several instructions I found published on the Internet by other Mac users who were trying to do exactly the same as I am trying to do.
Unfortunately I face a quite basic problem all the time: when I follow any of the posts/ instructions, sooner or later, I cannot move forward because I cannot find where exactly the DIRECTORY ACCESS (or any functionally equivalent configuration program like that) in Mac OS Snow Leopard is located.
I have given up on getting home sharing to work properly amongst all my various computers at home on 10.5 and thought I would use an old style brute force method of simply setting up a file share to share my iTunes library. I set up file sharing to use the Guest account and it works fine for all of my other content. I have tried to create shares of the following directories and can only connect as a registered user (Guest user cannot even see these shares):
/Users/<name>/Music
/Users/<name>/Music/iTunes
I have gone into the terminal and looked at the ACLs on the Music directory (e.g ls -alte) and I can't see anything that would block access, but I am not an expert with this type of ACL. The ACL on the Music directory is this:
0: group:com.apple.sharepoint.group.2 allow search
1: group:everyone deny delete
I have an ACL called 0: group:everyone deny delete on one of my other shares that works fine so this can't be the culprit (more importantly the ACL looks like it is just preventing users from deleting anything).

And also something to mention, Server Admin 10.5.6 and Apple Remote Desktop 3.2 DOES NOT WORK on Snow Leopard. The only way to manage my Server is to use Screen Sharing app <-- IT SUCK.
I've corrupted the preference panel for .Mac in my 10.4 installation. Does anyone know where I can get the .prefs app to reinstall for it so I can get that page in Preferences up again? I don't want to reinstall the whole thing!

All the PC's can see each other including the MacBook but the MacBook can't see them.After a grueling conversation first with a tech support newbie I had no luck, finally I was put through to an expert and I figured 'great, now I'll get the problem solved' ... not so, after doing all kinds of trial and error he thought maybe I should reinstall the OS, hell this is a new computer I'm not interested in hours on the phone and installing the OS ... I've done that enough with Windows ...
So I politely told him we were getting nowhere with his advice and if it's this much trouble just to see PC's on my network maybe I better re-think this whole 'buy mac' idea, return the MBA before the return period is up and go PC shopping ...And that's where I'm at now, time to walk away from the mac for an hour, if anyone can give me some idea's that might help please do, I love this MBA the Support didn't go well at all ...
I am using a D-link dir 628 router and I have dsl. I have a macbook and an older Hp laptop. the hp is going to be wired to the router and cable modem and the mac will be wireless. the hp is only used for email checking so it will sit on the desk. when first setting up the d=link should i wire it directly to the mac and configure it that way or does it have to be set up through the hp because that laptop is going to be the one always wired to the d-link and cable router?

Just bought myself a new unibody macbook for x-mas. So the deal is I'm having trouble getting it to see and recognize my windows workgroup home network. I see tips on enabling windows networking or smb or other stuff but i can't seem to find those options in 10.5.5 (now updated to 10.5.6). I have a MBP hooked up to a 1TB Seagate drive. I want to make the files on that drive accessible wirelessly. I know I can use the Airport Extreme to do this.
Now, my question is, what if I'm not using the Airport Extreme as a wireless router. My computer is nowhere near my current wireless router and I cannot move my drive.
In other words, is there a way to get an Airport Extreme connected to an existing wireless network?
I have an Intel iMac and Macbook connecting just fine to my netgear router. Airport signals are great throughout the house. A friend dropped off an old PowerMac G4 (Quicksilver) which I placed down the hall in my daughter's room.
It didn't have an airport card, so I installed an aftermarket one. The airport setup utility continually kicks out my login password to my home network saying it's incorrect (am sure it's right) and there is no signal indication in the finder.
iMac is running Leopard 10.5.x
Macbook is 10.4.x
G4 is 10.2
I've got a Mac mini downstairs (plugged into my router and an iMac upstairs (connected to router via airport). What's the best way to make sure the two stay networked and connected? At the moment I have to manually click connect to the Mac mini each time and enter my password. And when the mac mini enters sleep mode it seems to drop the connection.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI would like to send my iTunes music directory to my windowsXP box but when I log in to windows from the Mac and try to transfer these files, I get a message on the Mac saying "The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient priviledges". I'm running MacOS 10.4.3.
To do this I usually select 'go' on the finder pull down menu and select 'connect to server'. The mac will find the windows box ok and connect to it (i've got a folder in the windows root directory set for sharing). I just cant send anything to it!!! :-(
I am logged into the mac as an administrator and I have given all directories, subdirectories and files that I want to transfer adminstrator read and write priviledges.... it's still saying I don't have the rights to move them though.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI've currently got a Macbook and a Macbook Air connecting to an Airport Extreme Basestation with the new firmware. Both the Macbooks have 802.11n and the new Airport Utility installed. My Macbook is functioning perfectly, however, my Macbook Air has the following problems:
1) It won't connect to the AE when it is set in the 802.11n only mode at 5 GHz. It will scan for the network but not find it. It will connect in the 802.11 only mode at 2.4 GHz.
2) It prints very slowly to my HP printer connect to the AE via the USB port. It will spool the page being printed and will take about 1-2 minutes before the printer finally print it. My Macbook doesn't have any problems printing. When connected directly to the printer, the Macbook Air prints fine making me think that this is a networking issue.
I believe the printing problems started after the upgrade, but since I use my Macbook more than my Macbook Air, I could be wrong about this.
I have purchased a MBA (love it!), and I am about to sell my Windows desktop. I will be duel-booting OS X and Win 7 on my MBA, and I might add a Mac mini or a self-built Windows box to my network down the road (mostly to serve video and other files). I am getting an Airport Extreme to add to my current wireless G router/DSL modem. The AE will serve as my wireless N access point (N for the MBA, G from the other wifi router for my iPhone), and I will use it to connect my printer and an external 1TB drive. I can't decide whether to built a cheap Windows box to be my file server (and to perform random tasks when the MBA is with me) or to buy some NAS system to serve my files.
My other question is what format do I use for my external drive and a couple of pen drives I use as backup for my documents and pictures. They are currently formatted NTFS, and I realize I cannot modify them from OS X. But Mac formatting isn't visible in Windows without an added program, right? I often have files above the size limit for Fat32. So which format do I chose? One of the pen drives is used for school where I transfer Visual Studio programming files; another is a photo/document backup that I keep in a fireproof safe. Will I just need to keep one pen drive only for my programming classes formatted to NTFS? What do other people do?
Just got a laptop (vista) and I can't seem to figure out how to share the computers together. I do have macdrive but as you know you need to be connected via usb/fw.
Point is, I have a drobo connected to my iMac and I would like to access it as well as my files on my iMac.

Im not a whiz on networking but how does this work. Im sure it dosnt just work like the MB does in regards to picking up the WiFi signal...
