I need to enable the root account but cannot find the "directory utility" that is supposed to be in the utilities folder..
My mac is set to dutch and the dutch translation of the online docs has not yet been updated for 10.5.. Can anyone show me a screenshot of this app if it is even available? I've opened all apps in the utlities folder and can't find it..

And also something to mention, Server Admin 10.5.6 and Apple Remote Desktop 3.2 DOES NOT WORK on Snow Leopard. The only way to manage my Server is to use Screen Sharing app <-- IT SUCK.
I have a Time Capsule. I'm connected to it for internet no problems. I can connect to it's harddrive no problems. Time Machine connects and writes and disconnects like it should, no problems.
But I need to configure the Time Capsule to change the wireless security settings.
But when I opened up the AirPort Utility, it gives me the "AirPort Utility was unable to find any Apple wireless devices" crap, and the only thing I can do is click the "Rescan" button, with no avail.
The Time Capsule is literally only two feet away from my MacBook Pro, so signal cannot be an issue here.
When I am on my wireless network at home, I cannot print to my printer (via AirPort).When I go to the router and connect with ethernet cable, the AirPort magically detects itself in seconds.I have Windows 7 computers running bonjour and they can print just fine using AirPort.I was able to print fine wirelessly to the AirPort but today it's not working.

I used to know where it was in Leapord but now in Lion I can't find the application support and cache for Sfari or Chrome. I need to look for something in the cache.

However, I cannot find the 'directory access' which is supposed to be in my utilities file- I have 'directory utility' but this has nowhere for me to enter the name of my windows workgroup (as per networking guide says I should) and thus cannot enter it into finder>go>connect to server!

To install this component, just drag the File "XviD_Codec 1.0 alpha.component" into Library/QuickTime. The Library directory can be found either at your home directory (to install just for the actual user) or at the top-level of your startup volume (this needs an administrator account). Do not put in: /System/Library/QuickTime.
It is possible that the QuickTime directory does not yet exists. In that case you can create it yourself. Pay attention to capital letters if you use a case sensitive file system (i.e. UFS). But I haven't got a clue where the Home Directories are.
My MBPs HDD died, so I bought a new one and partitioned it into two volumes.
One for the OS, the other for my home directory.
It ran fine the last few weeks, only once (or maybe twice) I was unable to login, but entering the password again seemed to help.
I restarted today, and again, I can't login.
I ran Single User Mode and /sbin/fsck -fy , also started up in Verbose Mode and also used Target Disk Mode and repaired both volumes with my iBook's Disk Utility.
I want to change my home directory. I went by the book and was not able to alter it. Here is what apple says.

I am trying to install Fink onto my computer. I know this is a really really stupid question, but it says it is best to save in the /sw directory. i cannot find it. It seems to be a root directory, but do I make a new one or what?

I am now running 10.5.6 but the problem started when I upgraded to 10.5.5, 10.5.6 did not resolve the problem. The Directory Service Plug-in will not authenticate my username and password.
I'm fairly Technical, I just can't seem to figure this one out. I own a 13 Inch Macbook with the stock 120 GB HD. It was purchased this past September 2008. I bought a new HD from Newegg. Here is the link to the HD. [URL]
I read the reviews, and more than 20 reviews I read said this HD worked perfectly in their Macbook.
-So I received the HD yesterday
-I put it inside my laptop
-I put in the OSX install CD
-I powered up and held down C and booted into OSX Installer
-From the menu I selected Disk Utility but the hard drive does not show up as listed hard drives
After all attempts failed, I put the disk in my windows machine as an extra sata drive, and it booted perfectly fine, so I know the disk is ok. Some other thoughts?
-The difference between the stock and new HD is size and also 1.5 GB vs 3.0 GB Transer rate
-Does my Macbook need a firmware upgrade - I doubt this, but just a thought
-Does the Macbook not recognize unformatted disks - I doubt this too.
I am quite new in Mac OS X 10.5 (leopard). I just downloaded from windows msdn a .iso file (with the XP Operating system). Now I want to burn it on a CD. I found on the internet that I can do this with disk utility. Disk Utility should be under Applications/Utilities. But it is not there, I don't find it in finder anywhere. (The computer was installed by the vendor). Do I need to install it from my installation disks? I already looked to disk 1, but I do not know what to install.

Users that have connected previously are experiencing no difficulty. A quick overview of the layout of the system: two XServes, one is OD primary (aspen) the other is OD replica and iChat server (vail). I've modded some config files (long ago) to allow user IDs for jabber to be user@ourcompany.office instead of user@vail.ourcompany.office. It works quite nicely.
Excerpt from the logs shows a failed login attempt followed by a successful login attempt. Successful logins are happening from Messages (beta), iChat under Snow Leopard, and Pidgin under windows. I have a dual 1.25 ghz MDD Powermac G4. It was working fine until a couple of days ago. It froze up, I restarted it. I got a blank blue screen.
Also, the computer made some awful clicky noises that I've never heard before.
I booted from the OS X installation CD. Disk utility lists the WD1800 hard drive, but I can't do a re-install and there's no option to repair it.
I can't erase or partition it because when I try, I get a failure message saying it can't be done ("chosen size not valid for chosen filesystem"). The HD is listed in system profiler... with a capacity of 0 bytes.
I assumed that the hard drive had died, so I went to a local PC shop and bought the only IDE drive they had (a Maxtor 6l250r0). I installed it, then booted from the OS X CD.
I know that new hard drives need to be formatted, but I assumed that this could be done with disk utility.
But disk utility can't find the new hard drive, doesn't list in the left column. It shows the optical drives and the install CD and the old WD hard drive which can't be erased or repaired, but no new hard drive.
It's not listed in the system profiler, either.
I checked the cable connections and tried installing it in the front carrier rather than the rear, but nothing works - disk utility and system profiler can't recognize it.
The only other desktop mac I have access to right now is my old 450 mhz Sawtooth G4. I tried putting the HD into the sawtooth and got the same results - disk utility and system profiler can't find the new HD at all, but has no trouble finding the old 20gb HD and the DVD and zip drives.
I'm... not really sure what to do here. Am I doing something wrong?
I had to power off my iMac by Pressing the power key and holding it several times over the last few weeks. The last time it wouldn't reboot - I'd just get an apple icon. When I tried a safe boot I'd get the icon and it would change to a no entry sign.Next I started up from the snow leopard installation disk with the intent of repairing the iMac disk. The installation disk worked but when I opened disk utility it only found the installation disk. It didn't find the iMac disk.

I am connected to a wireless router downstairs for my internet connection. I am trying to use my new (bought second-hand on ebay) time capsule to store all my files on. I have installed the disk that came with it but when I try to find the capsule via Airport Utility it is unable to do so. The amber light is flashing like it is supposed to. View 1 Replies View RelatedI zipped up about 3 gigs into a 2.24 gig zip file. I did it with stuffit deluxe, and I had no problems opening it. Then, I sent the file over the network to my roomate and reformatted/reinstalled OS X Tiger, then d/l'd the file back from my roomate.
Now, it won't open! I'm just using the standard OS X BOM ArchiveHelper... it gets like 75% done and says:
Unable to unarchive "filename.zip" into "Desktop". (Error 1 - Operation not permitted.)
My friend has given me a large Archive file (.zip) and it works fine on his G5 but when I go to open it on mine it comes up with the error:-
Unable to unarchive "Projects.zip" into "Backup Storage".

It all started last week when I tried burning an ISO to a blank Memorex DVD-R. When I inserted the DVD it would eject the CD over and over again no matter how many times I tried. The same thing would happen if I used a Memorex CD-R. Now these CD's worked in the past without any issues, and seem to work just fine on my other computers.
I decided to go out and buy a different brand of DVD-R's at Office Depot, thinking the laptop just wasn't really into these DVD's anymore. I ended up buying TDK DVD-R's. The computer seemed to like these more because it didn't eject them when I placed them into the drive.
I recently generated an entire backup of my website for safety purposes. As usual I deleted something that I realized I need, so i am trying to open up this .tar.gz file that i downloaded from my webhost. However, the mac Archive Utility always says, "Unable to unarchive backup" I have tried to downloaded BetterZip for mac and do it that way and i still get the same error.
Can anyone offer any advice to this?
I ordered a second hard drive for my powermac g5.Its a 400 gig seagate drive.I power off my machine,unhooked everything and plugged in the drive.
I boot up and the drive isnt showing in disk utility.Is it something i did?
I have a Mac Mini and on the internal drive I have Snow Leopard installed on the first partition and I'd like to install Snow Leopard Server on the same drive on another partition (I'm new to Mac, this is my only machine and my only drive, and this is only for testing purposes, so don't bother with stupid questions about why etc).
The problem I have is that I can't seem to create the necessary partition in Disk Utility. I have shrinken the Snow Leopard partition to get some free space and I've created a second partition for Server but for some reason I can't choose the options button to select GUID. The button is grayed out, see attached image.
What am I doing wrong? Or is it not possible to have two OS partitions on the same internal drive?
I was burning an ISO to a dvd in Disk Utility, and it gave me the message "Verification of the burn failed" So, I tried running the dvd, and I didn't get any error messages. Do you think the disk/iso/whatever is good to use?

One has Snow Leopard (Macintosh HD), Tiger and Windows 7On Snow Leopard I tried to backup files to my external Hard Drive but some files wouldn't transfer. When I clicked on the folder that was unable to transfer, everything went out of control. All windows started opening themselves and I had to shut down my MacBook by the power button.
View 4 Replies View RelatedLately, my MacBook Pro (mid 2010) started to slow down even with over 60% disk space is empty and max RAM is installed. It gets slow when using hungry programs such as Photoshop CS5.
I used the disk utility first aid and fixed all permissions that were shown with errors. When scanning the disk, I received the message that my disk is corrupt and I need to fix by restarting with command+R keys pressed until the apple symbol is displayed. When the next window shows up, choose disk utility and go from there to fix the disk.
When I performed that, I let go of the Command+R keys after the apple logo came up, the only thing that came up after that was a grey circle with a diagonal line through it and a spinning clock.

I have two USB cardreaders. One is (I think) a USB 1, unbranded. The other is a USB 2 branded Seitec). Our cameras both use Sony Memory Stick Pro Duos). They both of worked with both my wife and my iMacs under 10.5.11. Both machines (hers from 2006, mine an Intel Core 2 Duo from 2007) have been happily upgraded to SL 10.6.1... but now the cardreaders work with her machine, but not with mine. They don't mount on the desktop. I have tried various combinations ... attaching them through keyboard /back of iMac, powered USB hub. Sometimes they are recognised by System Profiler, sometimes not! Disk Utility seems unable to see them at all, so I can't get it to mount them.
However, when I leave the card in my camera and connect it direct to the keyboard (or whatever socket I choose!) the computer recognises the camera immediately I switch it on, and downloads quite happily
