OS X :: Finder Keeps Changing View Options?
May 3, 2010When I'm looking at files and folders in Finder, I want it to be in List view. When I open a folder that contains photos, I want it to show them as tiles. However, when I set a folder to show as tiles, it changes *all* folder options, meaning my normal files and folders start showing as tiles too, when they should be showing as a list. How do I fix this so that it shows the right view depending on the contents of the folder? This is proving to be a major headache coming from Windows 7.
In addition, the Finder window keeps on defaulting to a size that isn't wide enough to view all columns. I keep on having to press the + button to make it shows all the columns of information. How do I fix this so that it shows all of the information straight away?
I have to admit, these are some really major usability hurdles I've come across, and after a week of peaceful usage, I have that feeling of buyers remorse again right now because of this!
Software :: Finding PeerGuardian Alternative?
Nov 1, 2009So I was running the OSX version of PeerGuardian and it was working just fine but on campus it was blocking my internet for some reason. Needless to say I had to take it off but I was wondering if there was any comparable software I could try to run.

Jun 25, 2012PeerGuardian appears to be causing kernel panic and my iMac to continuously srash, and yet I cannot find it to uninstall - Spotlight yields no results at all, and I have removed it from login items under System Preferences / Accounts. I want to remove PeerGuardian completely to see if this resolves the kernel panic but don't see (a) how I can, given that I can't find it anywhere and/or (b) how it can be causing a kernel panic if I can't find it anywhere!Â

Feb 21, 2009So I have this really weird issue that isn't a real problem as much as a nuisance, but it is quite irksome. In the the sidebar of the Finder window, the icons for my hard drive (along with the windows partition) will change randomly and without my involvement. Sometimes they show up as the windows entourage logo, sometimes this other weird icon I can't recognize. Has anyone seen this before / know why this is happening?
Btw, I'm running a MBP 2.53ghz w/ leopard

Apr 13, 2009I have a mac mini running leopard server that is gong to be replacing an ubuntu server machine that sits in my closet. the ubuntu machine is great because i can configure avahi to broadcast itself as an xserve and it shows up in finder as a server. i have no idea how to change the broadcasted system type in osx though. sure it's a little gimmicky, but i suppose i just enjoy seeing the little xserve icon in my sidebar.
i know that the icons are located in /System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Resources/ and i could just rename the xserve icon to the macmini icon, but then every mac mini on my network would show up as an xserve.

Sep 13, 2009I installed SL on my iMac last week and changed the icon for the applications folder on my dock - no problem. Did the same for my Macbook last night and now the applications folder on both docks keeps disappearing. I use Mobile Me to sync the docks. I've dragged the folder from Finder into the dock and it stays briefly and then disappears.

It must still be on the system because often when I load a new window with mp3's, the old icon is visible for a second and then changes to the ugly Snow Leopard icon. By the way: if you select an mp3 file in Snow Leopard and select the Info for it, you'll see the previous icon up at the top left of the Info window that opens.

Jan 26, 2008I have a 17" PB, 1.33 ghz with 1.76gb ram. In September it gave signs of the hard drive failing. It would crash right after booting and then not boot at all.If I booted into target disk mode i could still access the files. I backed everything up and did many versions of trying to reformat / reinstall my OS to no avail. When Leopard came out I went through the process again to see if that might help but it didn't. Today I replaced the HD and now it still won't boot at all. It goes to the grey apple screen with the rotating loading icon and stalls. I've let it sit there for 10 minutes or more.

Jun 3, 2012For several weeks I've lost internet connection on my iMac every day or so; the wifi icon changes to show a ! and is otherwise greyed out. My internet connection is via a relatively new Time Capsule (2011) which has an ethernet cable connecting it to my Sky broadband router. I moved to this new Sky broadband router in early Jan 2012 (changing to Sky as a Broadband provider) and it works nicely as a router. My iPhone, iPad, AppleTV and a range of other devices (including an Apple Airport Express connected to a Sky TV HD box to enable it to download movies) have continued to work on the internet without problems.
The IP address of the iMac (27 inch quad core i7, 8 GB RAM, fully up to date on Lion) disappears from the Network settings when the problem arises but the connection of the iMac to the wifi (and backing up to the Time Capsule) still works. I can even use a VNC app on the iPad to connect to the iMac on the same wifi LAN when the IP address has gone and the ! is showing in the wifi icon on the menu bar. To get reconnected to the internet, I just restarted the iMac and it was then back accessing the web nicely. Eventually the iMac would not connect to the internet at all. It would momentarily get an IP address from the router and then lose it again. I then tried taking the iMac to the Apple Store.
Various diagnostics run in store at Genius Bar and during the week and the problem (using the same account) was not replicated. On its return home, it was still not working on the internet. I then tried booting into 'safe mode'. This enabled a stable and reliable connection to the internet! After several days in this mode, I re-installed Lion and booted into normal mode again. The problem returned and has been with the iMac since. However, at least a restart of the iMac gets it straight back on to the internet again. I suspect some sort of corrupted network preference file or the like. But where? The disconnection from the internet can happen any time of day; for example it happened while typing this message but more often than not it happens when the computer is unattended.

Jan 8, 2010my MBP has been really underperforming. Things take longer on my Macbook, then on my 10yr old machine with 512mb of ram and openbox. Also, firefox, has been going extremely slow, and crashing. I'm not using beta, and I have opened it in safe mode, and it still crashes.I know there must be something wrong. Both my brother and some of his friends with macs have also been experiencing stuff slowing down. So the first thing, I though it might be is that there is an update, or something like that. So I updated, but no go. It's still slow. And just the other day, I got to see this for the first time.

Apr 28, 2009I have a Macbook Pro and have been using Microsoft Entourage to automatically connect to and download my e-mail from my college's mail server. All of a sudden my internet got really slow. I began looking around and found that it was probably a DNS issue so I added 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2 to my DNS server list and my internet began to work nice and speedy like it use to. The only problem is that whenever I added these I can no longer access my school's mail server. At this point I am completely clueless and really don't want to have to pick between e-mail access and fast internet.

Oct 29, 2009I recently reformatted my mbp because the filesystem crashed and I couldn't repair it. Everything works fine except it beach balls a lot now and it's driving me crazy. It will beach ball quite frequently for like a minute or 2 randomly. This never used to happen until I reformatted it. I ran the disk utility repair and it still beach balls. Whilst in Tiger, the results were outstanding for both file size reduction and maintaining the bitmap clarity.

Sep 5, 2010I first had was the computer names for the iMac was set to MacBook and the actual macbook names switched to MacBook (2). I figured out how to change that, simple enough. On going problem is that now on the iMac I am set to admin but cant view other users folders they have the minus sign in the bottom corner of the folder and some folders and files have the Name "Staff" for permissions. The only users should be myself "TJ" and my wife "Laura". The MacBook is fine with just her and I as users but the iMac is goofy with "staff".
