OS X :: Can't Put The Translucent Menu Bar Back To Opaque
Jul 1, 2008
I am on 10.5.4, also happened on 10.5.3, there should be a cehckbox under desktop on the system preferences to uncheck so i can get an opaque menu bar, right? the problem is there is nothing there, nor on the screensaver section,

I just noticed that my menu bar is no longer transparent, as it was under Leopard (I upgraded to SL the week it came out, but I can't say for sure whether the menu bar was transparent immediately before that...). What's weird is that the "Translucent menu bar" checkbox in System Preferences only toggles between flat gray and the slight gradient look ? neither one shows any trace of the background underneath (I've tried it with several images, just to be sure). I wonder if I might have changed some default value in a .plist or something, and then forgot about it ? has anyone else run into something like this?

This is an annoying interface glitch. The desktop & screen Saver system preference has the option "Translucent menu bar". I've got this option switched off, so the menu bar is now opaque. When I switch applications the menu bar sometimes flicks back to translucent for the duration of the switchover to the selected application. It's as if the system always defaults to translucent when it's rebuilding the target application's menu bar. If there's any delay in fetching data it needs then I'll be treated to 2 or 3 seconds of translucent menu bar while it gets its act together.

I have Leopard. But, for some reason, my menu bar is not translucent. I posted a thread earlier asking for help, but no-one could. I've tried everything. Nothing worked.
So now I'm looking for an app that will do the job for me. Is there one in existence? I could've sworn I read something about it before.
P.S. - PLEASE don't post in here with suggestions on how to "fix" my problem. Like I said, I've tried everything, and nothing worked.

This may or may not be possible, Is there anyway to make the OSX Tiger style menu bar square on the edges instead of round on Tiger?
If I can tweak a file great, I dont want to rob any performance with a theme or anything like that.

I have a 2006 Mac Pro with the 7300gt card. The machine is fully updated with 10.5.2 and all other updates, but there is no "transparent menu bar" checkbox in the Desktop/Screensaver preference pane. I took screengrabs of each machine, the first is the imac (alu 2.4) with the ATI HD2600, the second is the Mac Pro with the 7300gt. Anyone know what gives with this?

Until yesterday, when the Safari icon in the dock was right-clicked, a menu popped up that had "new window" in it. Yesterday, the menu changed and "new window" isn't one of the options. How can I get the old menu back?
Another menu change occurred a while back. When right-clicking on a page, the menu contained 'copy', 'paste', 'select all', etc. "Select all" disappeared from the menu (it's still in the tool bar under "Edit".) Is is possible to edit the right-click menus?

Anyone else noticed on their air that menus are completely opaque. I know more recent OS revisions toned down the translucency slightly, but this is absolutely totally opaque. It is also not affected by whether or not the menu *bar* is translucent. Nor does it seem to be just a 10.5.6 thing - a Macbook sitting next to it with the same OS revision still has noticeably translucent menus. Is this just me or is it general? I could find elsewhere was people either complaining about *less* translucent menus in particular OS updates, which this isn't, or people misunderstanding and thinking the OP meant the menu *bar*, which I don't.

I recently bought a Dynex Mini-DVI to Video cable and used a yellow composite cable to connect my 13" Macbook white to the TV.
It wasn't working so I was messing around with some of the options and I think I moved the menu bar to the small display under Arrangement
Now whenever I plug in the mini-dvi cable, I have no mouse or menu bar displaying on my Macbook. And the TV still shows nothing.
Everything is normal when the mini-dvi is not attached, but when it is, I have no mouse arrow.
I'll worry about displaying my computer on the TV later: How can I get the Display settings to default

I purchased my 17" MacBook Pro last April and noticed a few months ago when cleaning the screen that there were about four small opaque spots in various sizes on the screen. I have always taken great care and never used anything other than a microfiber cloth moistened with a very small amount of water to clean the screen, so I am sure these aren't water spots, although that's what they look like. You only see them when the screen is dark and my MBP is in sleep mode, they aren't visible when it's up and running, so I'm not too majorly concerned, but it does bother me enough to question it. Too, they seem to have increased in number with time.

At a random time months ago (I cant pinpoint what triggered it) certain windows started to make themselves half-opaque when inactive. They seem to be "cocoa" applications (though I'm not sure the exact definition of that). The windows that are effected are: Skype v2.8.0 (chat windows only, not main 'buddy list') iMovie / iPhoto... I think there are more, I can't figure out which though. I'll update. The windows that are (surprisingly) NOT effected are: Windows Live Messenger v7.0.2
Textedit
Microsoft Word 2007
Firefox v3.6
I have the program named "Afloat" and it seems to be inconsequential to the problem.

Got my macbook here. Bought it 1.5 years ago. Out of warranty. Running on 10.5.8. When I printscreen it, the white strip does not appear. Its present even when I'm using my mac. And additionally, It's only visible when the background isn't white or black. Also, its been happening on and off. It normally goes away if I've been carrying my macbook in my backpack and then open it up again (leads me to think maybe it is sensitive and may have been bonked on something while I was carrying it in my bag). However, this time, it hasn't gone away simply by rebooting it.

Ok so I was my online textbook on my Mac and then when I exited Chrome I noticed some weird difference in my background so I looked closely and I saw translucent letters on it. I changed the background to a solid color so the letters are more visible, but how do I stop these letters. (I already tried restarting, shutting down, unplugging, but the problem continues to appear whenever I log in.

I've realized that sometimes I "lose" my wireless signal. I am not using an AirPort router (I'm using Linksys, if that's at all helpful). I've noticed that suddenly all of the wireless signals disappear from the AirPort menu up on the menu bar, except the network that I am connected to (i.e., I only see my router's name there). It also becomes impossible for me to browse the internet, so what I've done to troubleshoot this is disable the AirPort, put the computer to sleep, and disconnect/reconnect my router. When I turn it on, it seems to work. I've also tried simply disabling and then re-enabling AirPort, but it doesn't work after that.

my "services" menu has disappeared as an option in finder. When I try to access it by right-clicking a finder item (folder or file), it's just plain missing. However if I look for it under the finder menu bar, the arrow beside service says 'building'. But I've been waiting for hours and it doesn't look like anything's happening.

I recently bought myself a Macbook Pro 13-inch model and I've been loving it so far. One thing that really bugs me is how bad the menu navigation is in OS X. I just read this on Macrumors and the only way to access menu from keyboard is by using ctrl+F2 key for which I have to press ctrl+fn+f2 key since F2 is a secondary function. Also, there is no way of going directly to the middle of the menu by keyboard shortcuts, right? If that is true, Mac OS X is still not polished enough for laptops. is there are a better way to control the menu items?
