OS X V10.7 Lion :: Translucent Menu Bar Bug?
Mar 12, 2012
This is an annoying interface glitch. The desktop & screen Saver system preference has the option "Translucent menu bar". I've got this option switched off, so the menu bar is now opaque. When I switch applications the menu bar sometimes flicks back to translucent for the duration of the switchover to the selected application. It's as if the system always defaults to translucent when it's rebuilding the target application's menu bar. If there's any delay in fetching data it needs then I'll be treated to 2 or 3 seconds of translucent menu bar while it gets its act together.

I just noticed that my menu bar is no longer transparent, as it was under Leopard (I upgraded to SL the week it came out, but I can't say for sure whether the menu bar was transparent immediately before that...). What's weird is that the "Translucent menu bar" checkbox in System Preferences only toggles between flat gray and the slight gradient look ? neither one shows any trace of the background underneath (I've tried it with several images, just to be sure). I wonder if I might have changed some default value in a .plist or something, and then forgot about it ? has anyone else run into something like this?

I have Leopard. But, for some reason, my menu bar is not translucent. I posted a thread earlier asking for help, but no-one could. I've tried everything. Nothing worked.
So now I'm looking for an app that will do the job for me. Is there one in existence? I could've sworn I read something about it before.
P.S. - PLEASE don't post in here with suggestions on how to "fix" my problem. Like I said, I've tried everything, and nothing worked.

This may or may not be possible, Is there anyway to make the OSX Tiger style menu bar square on the edges instead of round on Tiger?
If I can tweak a file great, I dont want to rob any performance with a theme or anything like that.

Got my macbook here. Bought it 1.5 years ago. Out of warranty. Running on 10.5.8. When I printscreen it, the white strip does not appear. Its present even when I'm using my mac. And additionally, It's only visible when the background isn't white or black. Also, its been happening on and off. It normally goes away if I've been carrying my macbook in my backpack and then open it up again (leads me to think maybe it is sensitive and may have been bonked on something while I was carrying it in my bag). However, this time, it hasn't gone away simply by rebooting it.

Ok so I was my online textbook on my Mac and then when I exited Chrome I noticed some weird difference in my background so I looked closely and I saw translucent letters on it. I changed the background to a solid color so the letters are more visible, but how do I stop these letters. (I already tried restarting, shutting down, unplugging, but the problem continues to appear whenever I log in.

I've realized that sometimes I "lose" my wireless signal. I am not using an AirPort router (I'm using Linksys, if that's at all helpful). I've noticed that suddenly all of the wireless signals disappear from the AirPort menu up on the menu bar, except the network that I am connected to (i.e., I only see my router's name there). It also becomes impossible for me to browse the internet, so what I've done to troubleshoot this is disable the AirPort, put the computer to sleep, and disconnect/reconnect my router. When I turn it on, it seems to work. I've also tried simply disabling and then re-enabling AirPort, but it doesn't work after that.

Everything is now gray in the menu when I open up my mac home drive in os 10.7. Why? Why change a good thing? Now when I glance over at the menu of 'Favorites', 'Shared' and 'Devices', all the icons a gray and it doesn't help when finding specific drives and folders, especially when adding attachments to email. They used to be easy to discern with different colors. There is nothing in "view options" to change these to colors, and I have found nothing in System Preferences to change them.Â

my "services" menu has disappeared as an option in finder. When I try to access it by right-clicking a finder item (folder or file), it's just plain missing. However if I look for it under the finder menu bar, the arrow beside service says 'building'. But I've been waiting for hours and it doesn't look like anything's happening.

I rebooted my Macbook Air (Mac OS X Lion) and the menubar doesn't show up. The top of the desktop is blank. No date/time. No wifi icon. Nothing. When I launch an application then the menubar shows up. When I close the application no menubar. Also, when I option+right-click on the Finder icon in the Dock there is no option to relaunch Finder. When I open a folder the menubar for Finder doesn't show up. What should I do?

A new menu bar item caught my eye a couple of days ago. Identical icon to the Eject button on the keyboard. upward pointing triangle with a line under it. Click on it and it says, greyed out, "SuperDrive F12". Is this Apple code or someone else's? Do I need it cluttering up the menu bar? Probably not. But how do I get rid of it? And even more important, how do I look for the unwanted code that may be doing unwanted routines in this Mac? Or is this thing totally benign? Anyone familiar with this one?

Is there a way to add programs to the Open With Menu. For example, when you right click on a file you can choose to open it with the default application by selecting Open, or choose other programs to open it with by selecting Open With.Only a few of the programs that can open the files are listed. Is there a way to add programs that I use to list in that list.Right now, everytime I want to open something in a program that is not listed I have to go to Other... and find it in the Application folder. Which is not too convenient. Many programs that I use to open files are not listed for many types of file types, I open them frequently using the Open... window, and I was hoping that Mac would learn to add them, but it did not.
For example, I have VMWare with Windows 7 and Microsoft Office 2010 in it, my default application for WORD documents is Word for Mac 2011, but occasionally I need to open it in Word 2010 in Windows (Certain features that are missing in Mac Word), and I have to browse to fin the Word 2010 Application from the Application Folder.Another example is a program (from the App Store) called ResizeIt (which resizes photos), I have to browse for it everytime even though it is an application just for images. So, is there a way to edit the Open With Menu for specific file types to include these programs that I use, or do I have to keep browsing to the Application folder and finding it there?

I'm setting up one of the new MacBook Pros with Retina display. I have it attached to a new Thunderbolt display. I used the migration assistant to transfer the files from an older MacBook Pro that was running the latest version of Lion. Once the user files, settings, apps, etc. were transferred, I rebooted and then logged in as the "transferred" user. At first the icon for the display settings appeared in the menu bar next to things like network settings, battery, volume, etc. but then it disappeared and I can't find any way to get it back. It is no longer a check box in the display settings within System Preferences.Â
Is this a function of the new MacBook Pro or a function of Lion. The other office computer, a 24" iMac, that was also upgreaded to Lion still has the check box. This is kind of important since this MacBook Pro is used on the road with LCD projectors as well as the Thunderbolt display and also just with the built in Retina display.Â

I recently bought myself a Macbook Pro 13-inch model and I've been loving it so far. One thing that really bugs me is how bad the menu navigation is in OS X. I just read this on Macrumors and the only way to access menu from keyboard is by using ctrl+F2 key for which I have to press ctrl+fn+f2 key since F2 is a secondary function. Also, there is no way of going directly to the middle of the menu by keyboard shortcuts, right? If that is true, Mac OS X is still not polished enough for laptops. is there are a better way to control the menu items?

I have a new HP Photosmart 7510. It is possible to scan, if I use HP Scan 3 or the possibility in the printer and scanner driver menu. I habe installed the newest driver (3.3.3). In some applications (Acrobat X, GraphicConverter) I need to scan with TWAIN, but it is not possible to choose the scanner because it does not appear in the dropdown menu.
Does any know, if it is generally possible to scan using TWAIN?

I'm running Safari 5.1.3 on imac on 10.7.3. I just synced my ipad to computer. On my bookmarks bar on the ipad I had only 2 bookmarks. On the computer I had a whole bunch. Same with bookmarks menu. After the sync, on my computer, it had deleted all the bookmarks on my bookmarks bar, and only left me the 2 that were on the ipad. Same with bookmarks menu. Seems to have affected bookmarks bar and menu only. Rest of bookmarks are OK. I have an external backup drive and backed up a week ago. But, have never had to restore anything. What's the procedure to restore the bookmarks bar and menu in Safari, using time machine?
