Mac OS X Lion Server :: Upgrade The X (desktop) To Server?

Apr 29, 2012

I have recently purchased a Mac Mini with Lion X. I also have a couple of MBPs. I'd like to have the Mac Mini act as the place where all the Time Machine backups go (I have a 1 TB external disk hooked up to the Mac Mini). Apparently, I must have Lion x *Server* running on the Mac Mini for it to become available as a Time Machine destination for the MBPs.  How can I upgrade my Mac Mini from Lion X to Lion X Server?

App Store :: Lion Server Upgrade For Snow Leopard Server

May 27, 2012

I can't seem to get the App Store to sell me Lion Server for my Snow Leopard Server.I'm trying to remain positive about this but I'm getting really that money isn't enough to make this happen. My experiencewith the App Store and Apple policies in general is its almost time to dump OS X and head back to Open Source.I put money in my iTunes account.I've done the 15 logins it takes to satisfy AppleID my account is complete and up-to-date in the store and the Support Communities. How do I buy the software and actually download and install it?

Mac OS X Lion Server :: Difference Between Server And Desktop?

Apr 24, 2012

I'm in need of the Profile Manager from Lion Server for administering iPads in our environment.I understand that to do this really well within the environment, I'll need to be able to have a static IP and I will be able to arrange that. My question is more about what I may lose on my macbook if I go ahead and bump the OS to Lion Server instead of Desktop. The biggies on my machine for usage are, of course, iTunes, Parallels, logmein, evernote, MS Office, Garage Band, Logic, iMovie, etc.

What negative impacts am I in for if I move to server on this machine? Alternately, is there any way I can make a true, cheap OTA Profile Manager (a la MDM) on a Lion Desktop or even a windows desktop or server? I can't be spending a lot on this, but I could certainly afford Lion Server (but not a dedicated new machine for it).

Mac OS X Lion Server :: DNS Upgrade From 10.6.8 To 10.7.3?

Apr 12, 2012

I just upgraded from Snow Leopard Server 10.6.8 up to Lion Server 10.7.3. All services seemed to come through ok except DNS. None of the records on the server resolve anymore. I have setup forwarding IPs when the requested domain isn't in the local database, and those still seem to work becuase clients can still resolve external websites just fine, however no internal services resolve. I can't even get the server itself to resolve DNS entries even though its DNS server is set as 127.0.0.1.

Mac OS X Lion Server :: Unable To Upgrade From 10.6.8 Configuration

May 9, 2012

I'm unable to upgrade from my 10.6.8 configuration on my Mac Pro running OS X Server to OS X Lion Server. I've purchased both Lion and Lion Server, but each time I attempt to run the updates to 10.7+ I get error messages saying to install 10.7 or to download Lion Server - though when I do that it tells me that I need to install 10.7. How to migrate to Lion Server.

Mac OS X Lion Server :: Now Reboots Randomly After 10.7.4 Upgrade

May 14, 2012

I have been running a Mac Mini OS X Server for last 3 months without a single error. I have 2 of them. Yesterday, I upgraded to 10.7.4 (from 10.7.3) and today, one of my servers has crashed twice. Both times, it has rebooted (no Monitor attached to Mac Mini). It is out of service for 10 mins or so. This concerns me, as it never rebooted before 10.7.4. Also, other Mac Mini OS X Server doesn't have an issue. I usually wait a few weeks before installing software updates on servers - but I decided to yesterday (Sunday), because I had some time, stupid me.

Mac OS X Lion Server :: AD LDAP Connects To Lion Server But Does Not Show Users / Groups

Feb 19, 2012

I have a server in our DMZ that connects to Active Directory LDAP server (non-ssl over 389) but no objects actually show up in the directory editor. I get a green light in my Network Account Server, but queries against LDAP return no results. My end goal is to be able to dictate to Profile Manager what LDAP groups are allowed to enroll devices. I tested on our internal network on a test server and get the same results. Anyone have any luck connecting a Lion Server to LDAP and actually being able to view and utilize users and groups?

OS X Technologies :: Upgrade From Snow Leopard Server To Lion?

I have been wanting to buy a Mac Mini, but the one I want is a refurbished June 2010 model and comes with Snow Leopard Server.  Is there any way I can upgrade to the non server version of Lion?  I will not be using any server features, and to the best of my knowledge, the Mac Mini server does not have any hardware that does not come with the regular Mac Mini, other than the 2nd HDD.

Mac OS X Lion Server :: 10.7.3 Server Update - Single Sign No Longer Works

Feb 9, 2012

I recently updated my Server running 10.7.0 to version 10.7.3 and single-sign-on no longer works for my users. The 10.7.3 Lion Server System is bound to our Active Directory Server running on Win2003 R2 Server. I tried un-binding and rebinding the system but.. no luck. When a user now tries to login to our shares via AFP with SSO credentials they recieve the message

I can run the id command from terminal on the OS X server and it is seeing AD users. Unfortunately, no one can log into the server shares via AFP with an AD user.

Mac OS X Lion Server :: SSL Server Certificate Does Not Work (copy Of Cert Included)

Mar 12, 2012

I am desperate for help because whatever I do I cannot get my own certificates to work. When I first set up Lion Server a so-called Intermediate CA and a corresponding SSL server certificate was automatically  installed and that works fine. Now, I wanted to create my own Certificate Authority (CA) and a leaf SSL server certificate.[URL]First I created my own CA, and then I created a new certificate with the Server App (ID type "leaf", certificate type "SSL server". (see screenshots below), and I had it signed by my own CA. When I checked the certificate it said "valid".Next, I exported the certificate from the keychain (as .p12) and then I went to Server App's "Import a certificate identity" to drag and drop the certificate onto the window. So far so good.

When I opened the list of certificates (Server App -> Hardware -> SSL -> Edit ) the new certificate showed up once, and after the Server App had tried to install the certificate it simply did not show up any more. I have copied the important parts of the certificate below (private parts have been cropped). The common name and the DNS name  are "myserver.domain.private", and yes, DNS is working fine.(I stopped started services and re-booted in between creating and importing the new certificate.)

Mac OS X Lion Server :: Web-mail Not Working Since Installing File-maker Server 12?

Apr 18, 2012

Since installing Filemaker Server 12 on our Lion Server 10.7.3, the Webmail is no longer working. I know with previous installations of Filemaker Server I have been asked whether I wanted to keep the system version of PHP or install PHP which comes with Filemaker Server, but I don't recall being prompted about it on this occasion. Previously I had always opted to retain the system PHP.

[code]...

And from the WAN I get just a screen saying webmail is turned off and that I can turn it on by using the Server app on the server (It is already checked in the server app).

Mac OS X Lion Server :: Restart Apache With Server-admin Environment Variables Set?

May 21, 2012

With any Unix machine, one can run at the command line:-  apachectl -S This will show all virtual servers configured in Apache, and will break if there are any obvious problems in the httpd .conf files. It's very handy for testing a new configuration before restarting the server. With Mac OS X Server though, this doesn't work properly. Sure, I can run that command and see a virtual server or two, but with the introduction of the server Apache wrappers, the command line tools read a very different configuration than the `serveradmin` tool does.

e.g. Wrappers like:-<IfDefine MACOSXSERVER>
....
</IfDefine>
or <IfDefine WEBSERVICE_ON>

[code]....

ps. Running `sudo serveradmin stop web && sudo serveradmin start web` really compared to `apachectl graceful`; it's painfully slow and doesn't provide a way to test a custom configuration before attempting to restart.

Mac OS X Lion Server :: GUI Navigation, Missing Folder Hierarchy Triangle In 10.7.4 Server?

May 23, 2012

not quite so dire if you clicked this wondering ??? And why is this bing posted on Server forum? Well it happens to be on a server and I am trying to iron out what happens when you completely trash the system and start over.  This problem occured in a subdirectory on one folder. It (the triangles ->) are there for all the other folders.  However, there is one folder I had on a backup (backup, meaning still being a previous version of Lion) that at one point that any group of folders I place into it. there is no browsing triangle that lets you go down furthur.  Yes you can open the folder and go further in, so its not prefs that I am aware of.

At this level...Triangles Here Still? Triangles still here. (Must say in Cookie Monster voice if you've watched the "Cookies done yet" bit you might giggle or at least be mildly annoyed.)

If you browse from this part of the hierarchy you get the expected behavior...Triangles Here Still? Triangles still here. however if you open the folder here is what you get...Triangles Here Still? (uh oh).

[Code]...

Anyway, sorry for the "less professional" candor of this post, but I have kids and a wife, and they think I am boring at times, and I love them - and while I am struggling with this, I am thinking of them, and obviously not with them. Ok Universe, this is where I need you the most: I'm counting on you do to something or say something to make it all better. Ok...Go

Mac OS X Lion Server :: IMAP Server Process Deleting User Emails?

Jun 4, 2012

I know this issue is kind of old, but there are so many flavors of it, that it is hard to find exact match. I've been having problems with single account, and it happens that this account has admin rights. Emails get pulled/deleted from user's mailbox within 10 secs after arrival. There are no other devices that may be pulling those emails, however, I've noticed something strange in the logs:

Jun  4 13:47:43 osxserver dovecot[173]: imap-login: Login: user=<xxxx>, method=CRAM-MD5, rip=192.168.0.123, lip=192.168.0.123, mpid=406, secured

I don't know if this event is normal to run on server itself, but seems it runs only for this one account that I'm having problems with. There is no imap client setup on that server, and based on my time stamps observations I'm pretty much convinced that's what's deleting my emails.

Mac OS X Lion Server :: Use Mobile Accounts Locally (on Server) As Well As On A Laptop Connected To It?

Jun 5, 2012

The girlfriend and I are consolidating machines and want to try a software based approach instead of a plug and swap approach. My goal is to have only a Desktop + iPad and she have her MacBook. The issue is that we also want to keep it limited to one monitor, etc. on the desk but she is in grad school and will have need for the larger screen and keyboard. My question is can I set up her laptop to use a Mobile Account and assuming she logs off on that before going onto the Server, can she then log in to the Server desktop and use that Mobile Account locally there? So sometimes use the Mobile Account on the laptop, Sometimes on the Desktop. From my days managing a small network, this seems plausible but could also be fraught with problems.

Mac OS X Lion Server :: Upgrading From 10.6 Client To 10.7 Server Multi-user?

May 8, 2012

Reguarding Lion Server upgrade strategies: I have a macmini running 10.6.8 client serving Filemaker files, acting as File Server, and running a development web server. It runs as a normal non-admin user (nomad)  utilizing a seprate admin account with admin privilages (guardua),for security.   I run multiple shell scripts, apple scripts and Filemaker scripts. Many of which which use hardcoded file locations.  Some bash scripts run under the non priv user other under the admin account.   I also have a thrid user account which acts as rsync destination. Considering most files and programs are under the non-privileged user, I'm wondering how this user / admin account set- up will work when transitioning to Lion Server. (?)  Will ther server app and scripts work with this set up?   Do I need to upgrade the non-admin user (nomad) to admin privilages? I'm user sure how users and admin users work under Lion Server.Should I upgrade to Lion then to Lion Server?  --Or--  perhaps do a clean install of Lion/server then reload from timemachine?  Start from scratch?

Mac OS X Lion Server :: Small Office File Server Options?

May 31, 2012

We are a small business with 2 mac mini's, 2 macbook laptops and another macbook pro laptop who is remote. (the remote laptop is not a deal breaker) We are beginning to have a nightmare with file storage, everyone is saving their own work to their own workstation and it's becoming difficult to share files etc. Basically, our requirements for a solution are:

- Sensible file server, allowing all on-site computers to use the server as a main file storage

- Something I can back all computers up with from time machine

- Useful to restrict certain users to certain files

- Useful to have external access to files when off site and via the likes of iPad etc.

I've looked in a NAS Raid drive and the OsX Lion Server and also the Time capsule and am just so confused at what to buy. Although the calendar sharing options etc. on the server would be useful, we can also do this via icloud. It's mainly the file access that is such a problem.  I wonder whether a time capsule would be good enough as a file server - which we then back up to the cloud to secure the data.
