OS X :: Dock Indicator Not Showing Up - System Stop Responding And Force Restart Finder

Apr 9, 2008

My computer stop responding so I had to force restart finder. Now my active programs indicator is not working. How do I get it to work again? I have tried shutting down my computer and that didn't work. I deleted and re-copied over the files, but that didn't work either.

OS X Yosemite :: Force Quit Window Will Say - Finder Is Not Responding

Dec 2, 2014

I've assigned the tags I want to a file, I'll get the beach ball. If I go into the Force Quit window it will say that Finder is not responding. But if I wait about 20-30 seconds it stops and I can go about my business w/o re-starting the Finder. I only noticed this after installing Yosemite. I use tags A LOT.

IMac :: Stop Responding - Need To Restart After Unplug

Dec 10, 2010

I have found the past 4 weeks that my iMac will not respond to any mouse movement, keyboard, trackpad or pushing the power button every 5 days or so. I must unplug from the wall, replug into wall then push power button, then it boots up. I have had iMac for 9 months and has always just went to sleep and when I move mouse awakens. After I must unplug, it works correctly again for 5 to 6 days then must be unplugged again. Anyone know why this is happening as I do not believe any settings have been changed and I am the only user of this iMac.

OS X :: Had To Force Shutdown After System Freeze - Any Maintenance Necessary Upon Restart?

May 14, 2010

I have a MBP running Snow Leopard. The keyboard and trackpad became unresponsive, even though music was still streaming through Google Chrome. So I held down the power button to force shutdown. When something like this occurs, is there anything that should be done upon restarting the system again? Any general maintenance, system checks, etc? From my experience with Windows, not infrequently after similar scenarios, forced shutdown or crash, upon restart it'll automatically go into some type of disc scan. I wonder if anything similar occurs or is necessary with OSX. And lastly, when the system freezes like in my instance, if that's considered a freeze even though music was streaming all the while, is holding down the power button the only resolution? Are there no other safer alternatives to attempt first?

OS X :: Shutdown / Restart System - Stuck On Showing Desktop

Mar 8, 2008

I'm a rather new Mac user (it's been about 6 months since I bought my new aluminum iMac). Lately, I've been experiencing difficulties in shutting down my system, or even restarting it. I should probably note that I'm using 10.5.2 Sometimes, when I try to perform a system shutdown/restart, the OS gets to a point where only my desktop is shown but nothing happens (occasionally the beach ball keeps rolling, but not always).

At that point, (as far as I know) there's nothing I can do to restart/shutdown the system, besides pressing the "power" button for several seconds until the power goes down. When similar things happened on my old XP machine, I would just use CTRL ALT DEL and force quit all applications - until shutdown succeeds. There was never a scenario where I needed to cut the power in order to get the system to shut down. On OS X when this situation occurs, the CMD ALT ESC combo doesn't seem to work.

Software :: Safari 4.0.3 Not Responding - Need To Force Quit

Sep 25, 2009

Since the last update my Safari 4.0.3 crashes a lot. Like 3 or 4 times a day. Either that or it shows the spinning beach ball, meaning Safari is not responding and needs to be force quit. It looks like it's happening when a page is (re)loading. This looks a lot like the continuous crashing that happened to Safari 4 when it was just launched (was that in April, or May?). That was then reason for me to switch to Firefox. If this keeps up I might do that again. Or maybe to Chrome.

(I'm still on OSX.5.8).

Today the OS X dock on my late '08 MacBook Pro 15" stop working like normal. It used to be, when an App was open, the icon would appear in the dock with a sort of highlight.

Now, the apps run fine but no longer appear in the dock. If I minimize it, it does show as a running app in the left hand side, but that isn't what I want it to do. Is there a quick way to get it to work again?

MacBook :: Requiring Force Restart A Lot - How To Escape From This

Aug 14, 2009

i am having some issues with my macbook these past 3days, and its just not the way i want it to be.. alright, let me describe what happened:

few days ago I was using my macbook as usual, then suddenly comes a terrible lag with my macbook(there's a delay for everything at about 30-45secs). it's impossible for me to restart it, so i did a "force restart(holding onto the power button".

After that, i couldn't turn on my macbook anymore, i kept getting stuck at the first screen(where the apple logo and a spinning wheel under it).. that was my first encounter with such a problem on my macbook. what i found out is that i got an error message saying "open error 5 input/output acard......", but couldn't repair it under disk utility. then went to search the internet and decided to restore from time machine backup. I didn't get any sleep for one whole night because of that!!

After the restoration, now my macbook is acting very very strangely.. like if i left my macbook restarting itself, and come back later it would hang at the login page, but the mouse pointer would still be working though(just can't key in my password or click on anything).. feels like the start up time is much slower, i get slow response at times and other minor minor stuff..

OS X Yosemite :: Force FileVault To Stop?

Dec 4, 2014

I've got a MacBookPro that's a couple of years old, but hasn't had any problems before - and then I updated to Yosemite. Since then it's been sluggish, stuttering and with a spinning rainbow wheel every five or ten seconds. It's got to the point where it's unusable - you click, you wait, then wait, then it reacts. Sloooow.

It's a 2.4GHz Intel Core i5 model, purchased in Summer 2012. 4GB of memory - and I've deleted everything off it, all my files and any third party programmes have gone now. On a 500GB hard disk, there's 468GB free now. It's practically got bats flying around in there it's so empty.

Apple suggested a PRAM restart, then an erase & install, which I've done a couple of times. No dice. Then I saw that FileVault is running, trying to encrypt everything on the computer. It's stalled at around 20% or so, and hasn't changed for days. You can't switch off FileVault while it's encrypting, so I'm pretty stuck at the moment; I can't leave it running because it renders the computer unusable, and reinstalling won't stop FileVault either.

how to switch off FileVault while it's running, and how to disable it in future?

OS X :: Safari Giving Beachballs - No Force Quit Have To Restart

Apr 30, 2009

For the last 3 days I will be in an application (safari 4,actually) and the app will give me the beachball. I have seen the beachball many times in safari 4 so I would just force quit the app. Well in doing that its still shown with the blue dot under it on the dock, aswell as in the force quit menu. I go to open another app (say iphoto or firefox) and I also get the beachball, and I try to forcequit the app, and it will not force quit. Only way to cure it is to manually restart my macbook pro. (I have a unibody 2.4 macbook pro btw_). I have repaired permissions. Deleted and reinstalled safari and ran weekly/monthly scripts via cocktail.

Safari :: Stop 5.1.4 From Force Reloading 15 Times A Day?

Mar 28, 2012

I waited a long time to upgrade to Safari 5.1 because the first time I installed it, it kept my fan on constantly / ate up all my CPU. I deinstalled and got the previous version. Finally, when no longer able to watch BBC content, I upgraded and got 5.1.4.

Safari used to work great. Now it decides that it has to force reload all pages about once every 40 minutes. It dumps all my cookies so I have to sign back into everything I had open - the facebook, Netflix, twitter, email, etc. It doesn't even remember what Netflix movie you were watching so you have to rebrowse - just because of the force reload. And if you somehow miss clicking on every open tab at the time to start the reload, then the next time you go to that tab it will start all the reloads again. Sometimes I just force quit Safari altogether and restart, clear my whole cache and dump all my cookies. Then I can get a clean hour out of it.

It takes up endless time to suffer through this bug and I see that it has been a bug for well over a year. What, if anything can one do about this? Why hasn't it been fixed?
