OS X :: Won't Reinstall Mac OS X On Dual Boot System (rEFIt)

Oct 7, 2010

My HDD is split to 3 partitions at the moment:

-Mac OS X (primary, OS does not boot)
-Storage (formatted for Mac)
-Windows (NTFS)

Is it possible to reinstall Mac OS X without formatting storage nor Windows partitions?

Windows On Mac :: REFIt Freeze - Can't Boot To OSX

Oct 20, 2010

I do not have ubuntu, but I have seen people talking about booting with and customizing rEFIt here, and this seems like a knowledgeable place to seek advice. So here's my problem: I have a macbook pro on which I have OSX 10.5.8 and Windows7 x64 (installed through bootcamp 3.1). I downloaded rEFIt and tried to modify the rEFIt interface following the instructions here: [URL] After trying to change the background (hostname.bmg) to a different image rEFIt opened to show the new background (.bmg file) but nothing else (no mac or windows logos like previously) so I can't select an OS to boot to!!

I can still hold down the option key during startup to bring up the regular bootcamp menu which allows me to choose between my bootcamp partition (with windows 7) and what is now called the rEFIt partition (previously called Macintosh HD before I installed rEFIt) So I CAN boot to windows, but cannot boot into OSX without going through rEFIt, which is not showing me any options to choose from. The modifications I made to rEFIt were through the rEFIt.const file in the rEFIt folder in the efi folder on my Mac partition. This const file now reads:

timeout 20
banner hostname.bmp
selection_big selection-big-ring.bmp
hideui tools shell funcs hdbadges label
legacyfirst

I can see and read my mac partition in windows, but cannot save to it to reverse these changes I made to the .const file. I was also hoping that the timeout in rEFIt would automatically talk me into OSX even though I cannot see any icons, but after 5+ minutes waiting on rEFIt nothing happens. Also, I made sure not to list badges under hideui so they should still be shown...........

Mac Mini :: Won't Boot Or Eject CD Due To REFIt

Aug 20, 2009

Long story short, I wanted my Mini to dual boot Ubuntu 9.04 and OSX, and the guides I was finding said to use rEFIt. This worked fine until I allowed Ubuntu to install a bunch of updates, which must have done something to my partition table, as now I can no longer boot OSX or Ubuntu, and the CD I stuck in there won't eject either (so I can't get my OSX install disc to even load). Is there a rEFIt command from the shell I can run to eject the disc and try getting my OSX install disc in there?

Really stuck - When I cold boot, rEFIt gives me choices of OSX or Ubuntu, both just spin and die during boot. Tried holding space bar, c key, option key, left mouse, all on cold boot and upon selecting OSX option from rEFIt menu, no luck getting disc to eject. I followed the guide here: [URL] Did I do something wrong when I let Ubuntu 9.04 self-update? It REALLY seems to have screwed up my partition setup.

Windows On Mac :: REFIt Not Showing CDs - Triple Boot

Mar 25, 2009

I've got rEFIt installed, and a semi-successful triple-boot system: Leopard, Vista 64-bit, and XP 32-bit (partition order; XP was installed before Vista). I've got only two issues with it, which might be related. First, rEFIt hasn't shown boot discs since XP was installed. Second, I can't boot into Vista directly; Vista installed BOOTMGR to the XP partition, and is using that; I can only chain-load, which is precisely what I was hoping to avoid by using rEFIt. If it's not possible to directly boot Vista, I'd just as soon uninstall rEFIt, but how do I know the XP partition will be the one that shows up when I press option at startup?

MacBook Pro :: Snow Leopard Screw Up REFIt And Triple Boot?

Aug 2, 2009

I was just about to order Snow Leopard, but then it hit me. Could it screw up rEFIt and my triple booting-ness? I asked my friend who is also using rEFIt and they think it could mess things up. What's your opinion, will it do no harm, or will it? And if it does, should I still get Snow Leopard? It was a bit of a pain installing everything, and I've just finished installing 80GB of games onto my Windows partition, so obviously I don't want that getting wiped or unable to boot!

Software :: Boot / Reinstall System From External Hard Drive

Aug 16, 2010

I'm selling my old Powerbook G4. Before I let it go, I want to wipe the hard drive and reinstall OS 10.4. I also would like to run disk first aid because I suspect there may be some corruption. The problem: I still have the original system install DVDs that came with the laptop, but the DVD drive no longer works. It just spins the disks for a bit then spits them back out. I do have an external USB hard drive with plenty of free space. Is there a way I can copy the install DVDs (there's a Disc 1 and Disc 2) to the external hard drive, then boot from that drive and treat it like I'm installing from the DVDs? I also have my new MacBook Pro with a working DVD drive. Can I make my Powerbook boot from a CD in the MacBook's drive? If not, how else can I wipe my system and reinstall the OS without a working DVD drive?

Also, will Time Capsule only back up files from OSX or from across the whole mac? Sorry if this is a stupid question, as I am looking into buying a macbook and was wondering if this is possible.

Windows On Mac :: Backup Solutions For Dual Boot System

May 24, 2010

It's time for me to look into serious back up solutions for a Mac Pro dual boot. I had good backup solutions in the past, but this set up is different. I now have two Mac drives (system and storage), the Windows partition on Mac system drive, and one Windows storage drive (total 3 physical, 4 virtual). Physical system drive is 240GB split down the middle. Mac storage drive is 1TB, and XP storage drive is 500MB. I keep reading about robotic backup systems like Drobo, but I'm wondering what the advantages are over simply getting matched drives and mirroring them. (Other than the fact that I don't have to worry about drive sizes I mean).

It seems to me the big selling point on these gadgets is the "set it and forget it" aspect. I've used mirrored drives in the past, and don't recall ever having to pay any attention to them, no extra software settings. Share them, don't share them, whatever. That, and they update on the fly. Every time I write to the primary drive, the redundant drive is instantly updated to match it. What am I not getting? These "robotic" backups just seem to me to be nothing more than SATA drive racks with a lot of blinking lights I don't really need (I pay attention to my storage capacity. I know when it's getting full long before the lights come on), and software that does stuff the system can already do.

MacBook Pro :: System Hangs At Apple Logo Boot Screen / RAM Not Allowing System To Boot

Jan 5, 2011

I've been reading this site for a while now, first time I'm posting. I recently purchased 8 GB of RAM for my 2010 13" MBP. There are two 4 GB DDR3 PC3-10500 1333mhz sticks. When I install them in the laptop my computer does not get past the apple logo boot screen (the spinning disc freezes). However, I can boot into Windows (boot camp) without issues.

Also, when I pair either of the 4 GB sticks with one of my old 2 GB stock sticks the laptop boots up fine in OS X. The system profiler registers it as 6 GB of 1067 mhz RAM (the stock sticks are 1067 mhz)

Software :: Unable To Boot From CD / Reinstall Everything

Apr 29, 2008

It's an iMac G5 on OS X v10.4

Here's the problem:

When booting up normally it goes to a screen with an apple in the middle, and then some kernal panic code comes up:

panic(cpu 0 caller 0x002E1904) unable to find driver for this platform: "PowerMac12,1"

That's the first line of the code.

Anyway, i want to simply format the whole system and start from scratch with the system disk supplied with the imac. However, when i put it into the machine and press C at start up, it goes to an apple screen and hangs on that apple screen and does nothing else.

I've tried pressing the alt key and going into the boot options and booting from the CD there. However, that goes to the apple screen, then a little ajax style loading thing comes up. That sits there for a while until the apple turns to a "stop" style sign. This continues to hang.

I've tried resetting the PRAM and NVRAM by holding the Command, Option, P, and R buttons. Holding theses makes the computer reboot a few times until i let go. Once thats done, nothing changes.

I've tried holding X while loading up, this just goes back to the panic code.

I've tried holding shift while loading up, this again just goes back to the panic code.

I've cleaned the system CD and it makes no difference.

OS X :: Need Two Mac Partitions - Dual Boot

Mar 26, 2009

I have a MacBook with OS X 10.5.5 on it. I'm allowed to use my personal laptop at work, but they have said I must have dual-boot and only use the one partition while I'm at work, to access the programs I need to while at work. Everything must be completely separate (my personal stuff, and work stuff). Their software is both in mac and pc versions. Instead of using bootcamp and having a dual-boot option for Windows I'd like to instead have two OS X partitions to boot to, one for personal use, one for work. I tried using bootcamp and then loading my OS X DVD into the drive to create a second partition, and it won't work. It seems Bootcamp is made to work when only creating a second partition with Windows. Well, then I went to the mac store and spoke to a Genius and well they said it's something I need to make an appointment for and come in to do, because it's fairly complex.

OS X :: Macbook Pro Takes Ages Before EFI/rEFIt Comes On?

Jul 25, 2010

I have partitioned the harddrive on my Macbook Pro, one partition for OS X and one for Ubuntu, and then i use rEFIt to choose between the two. But some time in performing this process, the time between you turn on the mac, until the EFI(or now, rEFIt) is on, takes up til 15 seconds now. Before, it was about instant.

This is a huge problem for me, but I havent found any way to fix it.
Any ideas?
