OS X :: Will Installing A New OS Wipe Out Data Files
Jun 8, 2009I do believe installing a new OS will NOT affect one's existing program and data files.

View 3 RepliesWhen using the Disk Utility free space wipe to wipe sensitive data (using the 7 times option), I thought that would be sufficient.
I was wondering though, does the free space wipe option also wipe the slack files on the hard drive? Is this even an issue for a Mac? (I know on Windows the slack file needs to be wiped for a completely secure erase, right?)
I've searched the forums, but nothing seems to answer my question specifically. I'm giving my computer to my mother and I wanted to permanently wipe all my data/documents for two reasons: 1. To allow her the maximum amount of space and 2. To clear up any embarrassing emails... etc. which I know I have. So,I diligently went in and erased all my mail from "Mail".I went into Users/MyName/Library -etc and found anything mail related and deleted that (as far as I could tell I was erasing all my folders, in box, out box, downloaded files etc.) I also hit "empty trash" after I deleted stuff. However, when I did a search using "spotlight" it was showing up old emails I thought I had permanently deleted. Eek! I found this by accident when I was teaching my mother about "spotlight". My mother's not computer savvy enough to even remember how to use spotlight... but nevertheless I don't want my stuff on there. Other than doing a clean swipe of my hard drive and reinstalling the operating system. (i had OS X 10.3.9) and a friend updated me to OS X 10.4 - yes for free... naughty me... I don't feel guilty coz I did buy a whole new computer coz my 3 1/2 year old couldn't do what I wanted anymore - ie burn dvds, video record, wifi, more than 40GB HD... so they made a lot of money out of me! Anyway. I also don't really want to wipe the applications just in case something happens to my new computer. I'd like to be able to use the old one as a back up.....

Since upgrading to Lion my MacBook Pro (Mid 2009) it keeps freezing and it takes much longer to boot compared to Snow Lepoard.I upgraded it from 2GB to 4GB hoping it would run smoother but it was so hot in operation (I literally couldn't hold it after just a few minutes) I had to take it back to 2GB. I also notice that all my apps return on logon even though I have specificed not to re-open apps.I have verified and repaired the disk using Disk Utility and also ran a supposed recovery of Lion but it took 1hr (including Lion download) however when I logged back on it was the same software and data etc; is it possible to do a complete data wipe and install Lion? It has updated to the latest software however I'm starting to get very frustrated; just earlier the whole thing froze and I had to force it to power off.

I know that when I delete a file the data is still recoverable from the hard drive until it is replaced by other data.
So I'm looking for a program that wipes any data (preferably with the Gutmann Wipe method) off of the rewritable parts of the hard drive. Is there such a program for the Mac?
From my PowerBook g4. Looking to give it away and want to erase all data except operating system.

Do we have to insert the Mac OSX disc (Leopard) into the machine at start up and will this wipe anything that is on the machine?

I want to do a clean install of Snow Leopard.
Could I just copy all of my music files, documents etc to my BootCamp partition, then reformat and install Snow Leopard on the other partition? Or does it wipe the entire drive?
I wanted to reinstall Snow Leopard and clean out of any programs I'd installed, but I would like to preserve my data, rather than moving it back from somewhere. This can be messy.
Example: mail files are stored at places now usually visible, firefox / thunderbird files are the same.
Anyway I can do such simple re-installation?
I just bought a new Macbook Pro as a gift for the guy that builds the websites for my businesses. It is scheduled to be delivered tomorrow. I also have a brand new 320gb 7200rpm HD that I got for $69.99 a few weeks ago. When I recieve the laptop tomorrow, I want to install the new harddrive in it before I give it to him.
What is the easiest process?
1. Install the new harddrive and do fresh install of Leapord?
2. Somehow clone or transfer the contents of the original harddrive to the new harddrive?
If the answer is #2, how do I go about doing this?
I have pre-ordered snow leopard. If i install it over leopard will i lose all my documents and music etc or will it just install over leopard and not affect them? Should i back up my hard drive before i install snow leopard?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI wonder if there is anyway to do the following to make using the windows on my Mac even more easy and simple: I have vmware fusion (recent version) installed on my Mac and viewed under "Unity" so the Windows and Mac apps are all viewed on the Mac desktop. What I want to do is to be able to install windows apps ".exe" that are downloaded under Mac directly on windows with just double clicking on the file that is in the Mac platform while vmware is already launched or not yet. I tried some methods like opening files with "exe" extension directly by vmware but that won't work, I don't know what else to try.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI keep running into applications that I can't run because the installer downloads as separate files.
It'll have a file with all sorts of pieces to the program but nothing that brings it together to run it. If there is it's only an autorun- I try the autorun(.inf) and it says there's no application specified to run it.
I have run across these types of applications more times than I can count. Every time I can't find how to make them work, and so I have to give up on them. These programs I download ARE made for Macs, so it's very frustrating- I don't understand. My husband said those types simply can't be run on a mac.
To make it short: On my iMac i have 2 partitions, 1 with Leopard installed, the other one with Snow Leopard on. Now, I'd want to use the Snow Leo partition as the system partition, and use the other as an archive... How can I remove all Mac OS X files from the partition without formating it? There is some app.. or something similar?
View 6 Replies View RelatedMy first post, I think I'm in the right place, apologies if not. I recently managed to salvage (using both Data Rescue II and FileSalvage, highly recommended) some old files from a hard drive I thought had died 4 years ago. Included were some old documents, photos etc. (It was a very happy day). Also included where some .imovieproj files, which I hurriedly copied over. The problem is they don't open. I open them in Imovie HD (v. 6) and I am told the clips cannot be found. I've done thorough scans of the hard drive and cannot find a 'media' or 'clips' folder anywhere, or any clip files, so I guess they're gone for good. My question is if there is any way to get the raw data from the .imovieproj files itself. One of these files is over 10gb. It seems odd that there's all this data in it that can't be accessed somehow. If it makes any difference I think the movies were made with iMovie 4, or maybe 3. I tried opening them in Imovie 3, didn't work. Any help with this would be wonderful. I haven't found any talk of this on the internet so far.

I've got a few .pkg files that I'd like to install, but I don't have permissions. Is there a way I can get around this without the admin name and password? I don't have access to Applications, either. I usually just drag the programs into a separate folder so I don't have to keep the disc image. And if you need to know what I'm trying to install, it's Mac MSN 8.
