OS X :: Does The Free Space Wipe Option Also Wipe The Slack Files On The Hard Drive

Dec 15, 2008

When using the Disk Utility free space wipe to wipe sensitive data (using the 7 times option), I thought that would be sufficient.

I was wondering though, does the free space wipe option also wipe the slack files on the hard drive? Is this even an issue for a Mac? (I know on Windows the slack file needs to be wiped for a completely secure erase, right?)

upgraded my from Leopard to Snow Leopard when it first came out, but for whatever reason my system has been running somewhat sluggishly since I upgraded (My Macbook Pro is more than capable of running either)

I want to do a clean install of Snow Leopard.

Could I just copy all of my music files, documents etc to my BootCamp partition, then reformat and install Snow Leopard on the other partition? Or does it wipe the entire drive?

OS X :: Add Basic Info Like PDF Documentation To App Packages?

Nov 9, 2010

For many of the applications I have (including Apple applications such as Aperture, iWork, etc), I have PDFs of the User Manuals that I've downloaded from Apple or other support websites. Would there be any harm in me dropping my user manual PDFs into the package at the top level (outside the >Contents folder)? I absolutely know to be cautious about messing with items within the >Contents folder, but wondering whether there is any harm in dropping in user guides or other related reference information into the package, outside the Contents or other key program folders within the folder.

Ultimately, I'm just looking for a way to keep my documentation organized and with whatever program it corresponds to. I've found that too many times, I download program manuals and tip sheets, and then I can't find where I put them on my hard drive. Also trying to avoid having duplicates of folders (i.e., a "Photoshop" folder in my /Applications and a "Photoshop" folder in my /Documents).

Software :: Startup Disk Full - No Valid Packages?

Mar 25, 2009

I was reading on a previous post that it was suggested a person with who was getting a "startup disk full" message like I am should use the disc utility to repair permissions. When I tried that I got this message: Error: No valid packages (-9997). What does that mean?

Also, I have an external drive and I use that to store pics and music and basically all my files. What more can I do to help with the full disc thing?

I have a Power Mac G4 AGP graphics 1.38 GB memory. Right now I have 204 GB available.

Software :: Finding Disk Utility Valid Packages

May 12, 2005

A few apps dont work since my 10.3.9 upgrade so I ran Disk Utiltiy to repair permissions and I get a No Valid Packages error. According to apple I should never move a file called BaseSystem.pkg (located in /Library/Receipts), which I didnt, but I think the 10.3.9 upgrade did... I checked out the path and the file is not there....

Anyway the 2 fixes are to 1) reinstall panther, which I cant do cuz of freelance deadlines or 2) to copy this file from another machine and put it in /library/Reciepts.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Recovery Fails When Downloading Packages From Apple?

Feb 6, 2012

I have a user with a new 13" MacBook Pro, which got rather misconfiguration  during intial setup. We thought it might be easiest to erase and start afresh, so I booted into the Lion recovery partition. Firstly, tried to customise the Lion installation as per previous versions, but the 'Customise' choice is greyed out. Ok, no Erase and Reinstall option then. In Disk Utility, I erased the partition, and renamed it something sensible (UserHD).  Back to the install, all proceeded correctly until it tried downloading files from Apple. At this point, the progress bar moved slowly across, until it reached the end and I was presented with an error message along the lines that it failed to download additional components from Apple.

I have tried this four times, with various combinations of Wifi, and wired ethernet connections, all with the same result.Booting into Internet Recovery mode (Cmd-Opt-R) also fails:  after an initial moving glode icon, and a small amount of the progress bar, I get the exlcamation mark icon, apple.com/support and error code -2105F The laptop is now unuseable, because we can't restore it.

1: Can I tell it NOT to go to the internet first?  Every other OS Installer lets you install first, and then go off to download additional components.

2: I note in the Installer logs that it thinks it's about 8 hours behind local time. Is this a problem (perhaps with SSL cert verification?)

3: Does the download happen over non-standard ports? (eg. something that may be being blocked by our firewall?)

MacBook Pro :: Folder With Question Mark - Error No Valid Packages

Jul 26, 2009

My macbook greeted me with the gray screen and folder with question mark this morning - I've tried everything listed on the Apple website for this issue, I've tried running the Disk Utility (although I'm getting an "error no valid packages" message) and I've tried running DiskWarrior. Disk Utility sees the harddrive - DiskWarrior does not.

The hard drive only "clicks" 3 times at bootup, but it stops immediately after. Can I conclude that the hard drive is not entirely defective that it's just a bad header, or boot sequence or whatever "fixable, I won't lose all my data" error? My other question is that if I can see the hard drive in Disk Utility, is it possible to create an image of it that I could say extract the data from on another Mac?

OS X :: Wipe Everything Off Mac Except Operating System

Mar 30, 2010

what I would like to is to wipe everything off my mac (second hand) so that I can start again with everything clean and fresh. I've done this sort of thing before with other Macs by simply reinstalling the the start up disk - but this is where the problem lies - the disk that came with the Mac is only for OS 10.4.10 (Tiger) and the Mac is currently running OS 10.5.6 (Leopard) and I don't really want to downgrade (the weird thing is the Mac came with Leopard from the factory so I don't know whey it wasn't supplied with the disk). So is there any way I can delete everything else off the Mac (files, programs - AND MOST IMPORTANTLY change the "home file" name) with out loosing Leopard?

MacBook Pro :: How Exactly Do I Completely Wipe

Mar 25, 2012

My MBP has been acting strangly for more than two months now. It started with taking a couple minutes to locate the WiFi, then just general slowness, and now is so troublesome that I want to just wipe it completely to factory fresh and try again. I nearly chucked it out a wondow today, the first time a Mac has made me feel like I was using a PC.I originally posted quite awhile ago (url...) although 300+ reads got not a single reply. So I don't know whether I am even posting this in the right area.is this more likely a Lion problem? Or something else? I don't know and am tired of being stressed. Had an important paper to write today and probably should have used my iPhone rather than trying to convince my MBP to work.

I have repaired the permissions, zapped the PRAM, re-installed Lion, re-RE-installed Lion, and tried just living in Safe Boot Mode. I just want my Mac to work, as it always has in the past. So now, let's just start fresh and see what happens. Except guess what? I can't find any specific instructions as to how to even do THAT.So I am begging someone to give me simple instructions to erase my hard drive so I can just start over.

MacBook Air :: Wipe - Not Recognizing New Machine

Oct 28, 2010

I've owned my macbook air for less than 12 hours, and it's already f'd. I normally use a time-capsule to back up my old macbook. I had filevault turned on, on my old macbook (and so I guess it was also applied to the data on the time-capsule) -I turned on my new MBA and told it to take all the macbook data (including login profiles etc) off of my time capsule. I figured this would be easier than migrating components of the data over.-Now, I can't login to my profile on my new macbook air. I have the right password, but it's saying that filevault can access the data, or something. Maybe it's because it's not recognizing the new machine. -At this point, I just want to start fresh with the macbook air. I stuck that little reboot key in the usb port and re-installed the software. Unfortunately, after I did that, the old login profile (which I can't access) were still on there. I get it - I'm bad with computers. Even with the really user-friendly, idiot-proof ones.

OS X :: Wipe Personal Mail Data?

May 10, 2008

I've searched the forums, but nothing seems to answer my question specifically. I'm giving my computer to my mother and I wanted to permanently wipe all my data/documents for two reasons: 1. To allow her the maximum amount of space and 2. To clear up any embarrassing emails... etc. which I know I have. So,I diligently went in and erased all my mail from "Mail".I went into Users/MyName/Library -etc and found anything mail related and deleted that (as far as I could tell I was erasing all my folders, in box, out box, downloaded files etc.) I also hit "empty trash" after I deleted stuff. However, when I did a search using "spotlight" it was showing up old emails I thought I had permanently deleted. Eek! I found this by accident when I was teaching my mother about "spotlight". My mother's not computer savvy enough to even remember how to use spotlight... but nevertheless I don't want my stuff on there. Other than doing a clean swipe of my hard drive and reinstalling the operating system. (i had OS X 10.3.9) and a friend updated me to OS X 10.4 - yes for free... naughty me... I don't feel guilty coz I did buy a whole new computer coz my 3 1/2 year old couldn't do what I wanted anymore - ie burn dvds, video record, wifi, more than 40GB HD... so they made a lot of money out of me! Anyway. I also don't really want to wipe the applications just in case something happens to my new computer. I'd like to be able to use the old one as a back up.....
