Oct 12, 2009Here is what I have: Macbook Pro - utilizing around 80GB of HDD. I have a large iTunes library, a small amount of Word and Excel files, very few applications (VLC, Microsoft Office, Transmission, Toast, etc.), and a large iPhoto library. I have everything backed up on a Western Digital external hard drive using Time Machine. Over the past two years, I have accumulated a lot of files and extensions that I don't need or want. I am soon going to trade for either a 15-inch MBP or an iMac. Rather than restore everything on the new machine using my Time Machine back up, I just want to start with a brand new computer. How do I get single applications from my external hard drive to the new computer? For example, I want MS Office on the new one. How do I get it over without reinstalling with the disc?

May 30, 2009This has been bugging me for months, so I'm hoping someone out there can answer this query. Our county changed our house number several months ago. I use auto-fill on Web page forms very frequently. Of course, every time I auto-fill my address info, my original house number comes up, and I have to edit it to the new number. I've searched around, but I have not been able to locate where the data for filling in the forms are kept, or any procedure available for changing what data Safari uses to auto-fill. Does anyone know how to accomplish this feat?

Jun 6, 2012I recently had a large hard drive crash, and, long story short, I got all my data back but now have a different user account on a new hard drive. The permissions on all the files on the computer are fine.
However, I am a recently graduated film student and use an external drive to edit video. When I tried to open up Final Cut Pro and work on a project, I was told that the program couldn't work because I didn't have "write" access to my scratch drives. I changed the permissions on the relevant folders and can now open the application fine, but can't actually edit because ALL the medi files don't give me full read/write access.
I can change them all one at a time, which requires I enter my password for each one, but this would take a few days of work to complete. My question is: how can I add my user account with read/write permission to many files at once? I've heard this can be done with Terminal, but I'm not sure how.

Jun 27, 2012I want to upgrade from Leopard 10.5.8.I bought the Snow Leopard CD from Apple a few months ago. Installer ran for maybe 8 minutes, then said it "cannot change the contents/data of the hard drive". I don't remember the exact word. I had to use boot from CD and the keyboard eject to get the CD out. Now my MacBook Pro won't boot. It gets stuck on the grey screen, then after several minutes it shuts down. I bought the laptop used 2 years ago, and don't have a Leopard disc. What can I do?

Jun 20, 2014My Macbook pro wouldn't turn on. I booted to the installation DVD and installed OS X to the external drive. Once the installation was done, I was able to access my laptop without any problem and I retrieved all my files from the USERS Folder. I tried to copy my old files to the external disk, before formatting the system’s internal drive and reinstalling OS X.
However, at every attempt, I’d get “some data can’t bet read or written (Error Code -36)”. I ran a Verify/Repair Disk Permissions and this is what I got:

Option: 1) open with (then select the program - i.e. word, internet ,etc) or to 2) save file or 3) do this automatically for files like this from now on. I need to figure out how to un-select the 3rd option.

Mar 31, 2010My first post, I think I'm in the right place, apologies if not. I recently managed to salvage (using both Data Rescue II and FileSalvage, highly recommended) some old files from a hard drive I thought had died 4 years ago. Included were some old documents, photos etc. (It was a very happy day). Also included where some .imovieproj files, which I hurriedly copied over. The problem is they don't open. I open them in Imovie HD (v. 6) and I am told the clips cannot be found. I've done thorough scans of the hard drive and cannot find a 'media' or 'clips' folder anywhere, or any clip files, so I guess they're gone for good. My question is if there is any way to get the raw data from the .imovieproj files itself. One of these files is over 10gb. It seems odd that there's all this data in it that can't be accessed somehow. If it makes any difference I think the movies were made with iMovie 4, or maybe 3. I tried opening them in Imovie 3, didn't work. Any help with this would be wonderful. I haven't found any talk of this on the internet so far.

DSII found the folders so how do I go about restoring them? Will I need an external drive that is atleast the same size as the files I want to recover? I have over 40GB of music but only a 8GB thumb drive.. Will it be possible for me to get my files back?

I used a macbook pro with Snow leopard 10.6.1. It was an accident, I copy all files in folder from Ext. HDD to a folder in macbook.
But I've made mistake. A name of folder on Ext. HDD was same as a name of folder on my macbook. While I'm busy, It was an accident. I push enter button to overwrite data.
A 7 GB folder has changed to approx. 2 GB folder.
In this case, Does anyone know how to recover my data. It's an important data, I've done it for a year.
I tried to use data rescue 3.0 and file salvage. But a search result of these 2 programs show me some thing such as 'Pic001 to Pic15555' , 'autocad 001.dwg-autocad 30000.dwg' ,001.pdf-11234.pdf'.
My hardisk is 250 GB but a search result is 300++ GB. I can't find a file that I want to use.
In this case, Is there any program that easy to recover my data???

Sep 21, 2010I am trying to use my hard drive I have had for a couple years to back up some files on my computer, but the data I had stored on there already has disappeared. I previously had the hard drive connected to the Time Machine application, but have not used it in over a year when I received an error message trying to backup my computer using that application.
I know the data I already had on there is still on the hard drive because nearly half of the space on the drive is used up, but when I plug the hard drive in to my computer and open it there are no files to be found. I want to back up the current files on my computer, but I don't want to risk losing what I already had on the hard drive, so is there any way I can find and access the old files again?

Sep 24, 2010I recently installed ilife 09 into my imac but I cant take advantage of the face detection feature. I deleted my jpg files in the data folder because I thought it was a duplicate file. I didn't know when downloading pictures from a digital camera, iphoto creates two jpg files. One in data folder and other in original folder. I tried copying the jpg files from original folder into the data folder but I'm still having issues. Is there any way I can recover my jpg files from data folder?

Dec 6, 2010We are a PC to Mac convert and still trying to understand some basics. We have an iMac 21.5 and expecting delivery of a external 1.5 TD drive. More than we'll even need, but dirt cheap. We also run Windows 7 64 bit through VMware Fusion. The only reason for that is the Windows version of Quicken is a better product the the Mac version.
We will back up pics, Videos, etc., on the iMac under MacOs with Time Machine. Can Time Machine also backup the quicken data files from the Windows 7 VM machine? I hoping we do not need to maintain separate backup drives to manage the different type of file formats between Windows and Mac. I hoping this can be managed through one place...Time Machine.
