MacBook Air :: Finding Excellent 11" Case

Jan 4, 2011

I've been using this case from Brenthaven. It's only $25 and fits the 11" MBA, protects it very well, has a shoulder strap as an extra option and has an outside pocket for charger, etc.

[URL]

They now list it for an iPad but when I bought it it was under 11" PC cases. I guess they thought it would sell better listed as an iPad case rather than a netbook case. It uses their CORE system, so you could dsrop this from five feet without damaging your MBA. Good value for only $25.

MacBook Pro :: Installing Win7 With Bootcamp And Optibay

Apr 26, 2010

I've got an SSD in the HDD space, and a newmodeus HDD bay in the optical drive (same thing as the optibay). So what I was thinking was to install windows in a partition on the 500gb HDD. My SSD is only 80GB so I wanted to save space on that. Here is what I have tried:
Macbook set up with SDD and HDD, no optical drive.
Bootcamp will not let me install windows using an ISO image, needs a CD to install.

So I put my HDD in the HDD bay and put the optical drive back in. I then started up the macbook using a firewire drive (HDD has no OS on it, only the SDD does). Bootcamp then tells me it can't partition an external disk and I have to boot up using an internal disk (even though I WANT to partition the internal disk... bootcamp wouldnt let me get to that option running off a firewire drive). It seems like the only thing left is to just install windows on an SSD partition.

MacBook Pro :: Things Not To Do When Installing An Optibay - Stripped Screws

Jul 30, 2010

Today I received my Optibay-clone and hard drive, and tried to install it. Unfortunately, I messed it up and don't think I can finish the job now. Using driver bits supplied by ifixit, I managed to ruin the screws in step 10 of this guide: [URL] Tight, tiny screws are the bane of my existence. I don't understand what on earth I was supposed to do to remove these particular screws, when all the other screws in the computer didn't pose a problem at all. See awesome attached pics of mutilated screw, and the 10 or so different Phillips screwdrivers, none of which managed to do the job. So, am I completely screwed, or does someone out there have a magnificent suggestion to aid me in my plight?

MacBook Pro :: Finding Optibay / Recommendations

Oct 4, 2010

I am looking for optibay recommendations for my MBP 17" mid-2010. I am not sure which one to get. MCE offers one, which I have looked at, but they are pretty pricy at almost 100 bucks. Then I saw another website, [URL] selling optical bay caddies for almost half that (~50 dollar range); and lastly even some on eBay for the 12$ range from US sellers.

MacBook Air :: Cloning SSD From Pro - Finding Transferring Difference

Would there be any problems cloning the SSD of a 13" MacBook Pro over to the SSD of an 11" MacBook Air?

The SSD is a 240GB OWC (only 80GB used) and I'm getting the 128GB MBA.

Are there issues cloning and transferring between different systems?

I got my new 13" MBP yesterday and just sat down with it tonight for the first time, and in about 5 hours i've installed about a dozen big programs, made a boot camp partition, and i'm finishing installing windows 7 right now...

OS X :: Data Rescue Cloning And Partition?

Aug 8, 2010

OS X 10.6, 2 USB hard disks (magnetic, not SSDs), Data Rescue 3.

I used Data Rescue to clone a dying 120GB hard disk with a single partition to a healthy 500GB hard disk. The healthy disk now just reads as a 500GB hard disk with a SINGLE 120GB partition, as expected. I then aimed a deep scan at the 120GB PARTITION on the 500GB drive.

Question: Could the scan have picked up files that had been previously deleted on the healthy 500GB disk, WHICH WOULD CURRENTLY RESIDE OFF THE NEW RECOVERED PARTITION?

The reason I ask if because I don't want to mix files recovered from the dying hard disk with my own files that I previously may have had on the healthy 500GB disk.

Another quick question: are partitions continuous on a disk, or can they be on sectors physically scattered around the disk?

So, after Googling, I found out that if I put my Intel into Target Disk mode, I could use it as external DVD reader, seeing my G4's reader is dead as dead can be.

I have today received my shiny new macbook pro - very excited!I currently have a macbook, and I previously upgraded the hard drive to 320 GB (same as the new Macbook Pro). What I wanted to do was just swap the hard drives - however when I put the macbook hard drive in the macbook pro it didnt boot. Pressing ALT on startup it sees the hard drive but just hangs (doesnt even show the apple sign).I dont have all the application disks so dont really want to start from a fresh install - I was thinking of cloning the disk with super duper, but that probably will have the same effect of swapping the disk!

Hardware :: External HDD - Finding Guide

Dec 16, 2010

Having had a WD MyBook go bad after a couple of years, I am looking for a replacement. One priority is a longer warranty than the weak 1year offered by WD. However, since I fear that all data on this drive is lost, I also want to see if there is a better solution. Is there any advantage to FireWire over USB2.0?

One solution I am considering is an inexpensive NAS drive with two drives setup in a RAID (an example would be the Sabio Storage 2-Bay NAS Enclosure (CM200) - sold by MacMall.) Would this setup be more likely to safeguard my data?

I run a MBP 5,3 model, with snow leopard. Do I need to keep those files? It says its something that has to do with powerbook.

Mac Pro :: Memory Installation - Finding Guide

Apr 19, 2008

I know there have been a lot of posts about installing additional memory - I even watched the installation video over at OWC. OWC video shows two factory 1GB memory sticks - one in Slot A of the upper riser board and one in Slot A of the lower riser board. It says to move the module from Slot A of the lower riser board and install it in Slot B of the upper riser board to make a matched pair.

But here's the question. I have 4GB of RAM - two 1GB modules in Slots A&B of each riser board from the factory (I know - I know - I should have ordered it with the stock RAM and purchased the extra at less than the exorbitant prices Apple charges - but that's another story). I want to add 4GB more (two 2GB modules):
Move the two 1GB factory modules from Slots A&B of the lower riser board into Slots C&D of the upper riser board and then install the two new 2GB modules into Slots A&B of the lower riser board (just as the OWC video implies)?

Leave the factory modules where they are and install one 2GB module in Slot C of each riser board to provide a "balanced" 4GB on each riser board?

Options #2 seems to provide a "balanced" module location (4GB in the upper riser board and 4GB in the lower riser) so the four cores on each CPU can access an equal amount of memory for optimum performance. - but I have read that you need to install the new modules in matched pairs - but does that mean put them together on the same riser board? In the OWC video, if the two new modules were a matched pair then why wouldn't they be put one in each riser board just like the factory modules?
