OS X :: Why Hard Drive Memory Disappearing
Feb 15, 2010
I have a iMac DV G3/500 (Special Edition) from summer 2000. Anyway, I am using Mac OS 10.2.8. Recently, my start up disk's memory has gone done from 1.2 GB available free space to 668MB (currently). I haven't saved anything on this disk so I can not understand why this memory has disappeared. I have also had icons on the start up menu disappear. Could someone please tell me how I can restore the missing memory?

I have been running out of hard drive space and have deleted a whole bunch of files... even deleted all the languages i didn't need from all my applications... about a week ago i freed up around 2GB.... but without saving and downloading anything my free space is now 70MB!! All I have been doing is watching streamed videos and I notice this reduces the drive space as I'm watching it!! Even opening firefox and some websites drops my memory by 0.1MB. I can't find anywhere where temporary files might be so i can delete them.
I never used to have this problem but I wonder if it has something to do with the fact that I now use wireless internet through a phone provider and a USB modem rather than my previous WiFi via cable broadband. Can anybody shed some light on what is stealing my memory when browsing?

Today when I tried to use my computer, I got an error message saying that my startup disk was almost full. This was weird because just a week before when I checked it, I had almost half of my 500 GB hard drive available. I went and deleted a bunch of stuff I didn't need, and restarted the computer, and I got my hard drive space back up to 221 GB of free space. Only a few minutes later, I looked at it again and I only had 211 GB. Throughout the day, my available space has slowly been going away. The nights almost over and now I only have 186 GB left.

When I send files to trash the disc space is not freed up. I've looked on the forums and some people have had success with turning off time machine. I didn't set time machine up because I back up to a portable hard drive only the space is disappearing on that too!

I'm new to mac and I've noticed that I can have 2 gigs of memory one day and the next I'm down to 24 or something. I've noticed that if I open a file in Itunes and then change the info that there are now 2 files in the finder, one with the old info and the new with the new metadata. Why does OS-X do that?!
Also, if I have 1 gig of memory left (out of 180 or so) why does it disappear to 0 if I open photoshop? I'm used to a PC running virtual memory and CPU but why does the Mac actually take away my available memory?
I'm at my wits end here, it's been driving me up the wall for weeks!

I don't play comp. Games, don't store pictures on my comp., and I don't need a lot of software. So how much memory and hard drive do I really need for a Mac laptop?

Can you add more RAM and Hard Drive memory to a Mac Mini after you buy it? I'm pretty sure you can, but I am just making sure.

I have an A1226 15" MacBook pro with 2GB of RAM and 120GB hard drive. I'm busting at the seams! It's running very slow, with 110GB of hard drive used up. I need more hard drive for photos, etc. and more memory for speed. I'd rather not spend the money for an iMac, so I'm considering upgrading this MacBook Pro with 500GB hard drive and 2GB more RAM (total 4GB). Can anyone tell me the pros and cons? Am I fooling myself to think this is going to come close in performance to a new iMac with 4GB RAM and 500GB hard drive?

I noticed the new Macbook Pro with Retina display has flash memory instead of a Hard drive. I love the new features and I want to buy it but I'm very skeptical of this flash memory. Can someone please help explain it to me. Is it better than have a hard drive in your computer?

I have a 2011 MacBook Air and I love it but I am getting concerned that the hard drive is failing. The amount available keeps changing by a few gigabytes..it will start the day with 10 or 11 GB available and then drop down to 9 or 10 GB and sometimes you can watch the amount available creep up in small increments every minute or so. It is not constantly fluxuating and of course I understand that if I move files on and off the computer, the space available will change. I have been using Macs for 20 years and I fear this is a sign my hard drive is going to fail. I am backing up the computer regularly.

I have a Western Digital Green 2 TB drive attached to on of the two extra SATA II ports on my 2006 Mac Pro. No problems for over three years using several drives on this port. Today the drive suddenly would not mount and I received a "Drive Not Recognized" warning. In Disk Utility the drive is completely empty without any volume. I also now have a 32-GB "phantom" volume which used my user name - but does not exist. I turned off the computer and put the drive in an external enclosure, which it mounted without difficulty. I am now updating my backup of the drive and ordered a new 2 TB WD Black drive.
Only a few days ago I had the similar problem with a SD card - missing volume contents, a "phantom" 32 GB volume. I actually reformted and erased the SD drive, ran Disk Utility to check it, and put it in another computer - using the same SD card reader - and all the files were there!! Nothing was erased at all. Very strange.
Anyone have any idea WTF is going on? It seems like my motherboard drive controllers are getting flaky. Any way to test it? I have all the usual test programs, but nothing has shown up

While using my MacBook to access an external drive which is formatted Fat32, I attempted to slightly alter the name of a file with a particularly long file name. Once I changed the name, the file extension was cropped, and the file became inaccessible. Now I can see that the file is there (with no extension at the end of the name), but if I click on it or highlight it, it just disappears, and when visible, in place of the file icon there is just a dashed line box. The file is also visible with Terminal, but if I try to take any action Terminal reports that there is "no such file or directory."
I tried DiskUtility, DiskWarrior and File Buddy but apparently they don't work too well with the Fat32 format. I also tried repairing permissions, restarting the computer, disconnecting and reconnecting the hard drive, and also rebuilding the desktop (?) using alt-command on startup...all to no avail. It's clear what happened: I screwed up - I should have reformatted the drive before I put any files on it, right? But now, I just want my file back. I know it's there. I can see it, and I'm afraid to alter the drive in any way until I can access this file.

Can anyone explain to me why, on my iMac's 500GB hard drive, the displayed size of the only 4 items on it is 207GB, that the info box on the HD itself says 393GB used? Unless I failed grade 1 math, 500GB - 207GB = 293GB, right? So where's the missing ~100GB? That's a lot of space I know I haven't filled up.Â

Today I went to plug in my Lacie 250 GB USB external hard drive into my 13 in. MacBook to get a shirt template for a design I am making. I discovered that the hard drive just would not mount and show on the desktop, and I remembered that this happened a few days before, but all I did was unplug it and plug it back in, and it worked... except that today, that didn't work at all. I tried the other USB port, and the hard drive showed up on the desktop for about a second, and then disappeared. I kept on replugging it back into both USB ports, but nothing happened.
Then I tried to see if it would work on the PC beside me, and it was recognized as an external device; however, a message came up telling me the drive was malfunctioning. I am guessing this is from ejecting it incorrectly (because I am in a hurry to head to my next classes...I use this laptop at school), but I have incorrectly disconnected it before in the past and this problem never happened to me before.
Every single project I have ever created for my design career is on that hard drive, and all I want now is to get my files back. All I need it to do is show up on the desktop for just the right amount of time for me to copy my files onto my computer.
I read online to put it into the freezer for a while and it should mount, but that didn't work. I tried using Disk Warrior, Data Rescue 3, and Tech Tool Deluxe, but the hard drive did not show up on any of those apps.I tried plugging the hard drive into an iMac as well, but it did not show up either.

Got a new MBP last month to replace my white MacBook - loving it as an upgrade but one gripe - if I'm sat using it on my knee I regularly hear the "click" type noise of what I imagine is the protection of the hard drive because it thinks it is being dropped.
I never heard this on my old Mac and while it's not a huge issue it is a bit disconcerting, as though I'm being told off for moving it in a fairly responsible way.

My PowerBook G4 (Alum) died. I've had it for 4 years, taken it with me to Alaska and all over the lower 48, and have had nothing but happy experiences. I knew she was gonna go, but I was hoping she'd hold on until I could afford a MacBook. Alas, no. The problem appears to be the ability of the logic board to communicate with the hard drive. I can hear the HD spin, but even with Disk Warrior, I cannot locate it. The Mac Geniuses at my local Apple store confirmed this and gave me a shoulder to cry on. I've run Disk Warrior, Disk Utility, and tried finding it using the target disk mode - no luck.
The problem is that I've got 4 years of teaching materials, 6000 songs, and irreplaceable pictures on the HD, so I can't bring myself to just trash it. It's true that you only fail to back up you stuff once. This is my once. I've heard that with PC hard drives, you can just drop the old HD into a USB HD box and use it as an external HD. I can't afford professional data retrevial, and I want to give this option a try if it'll work with a Mac HD. Any ideas or suggestions?

I have an aluminum unibody macbook from October 2008. I'm looking to upgrade the 160 GB hard drive inside to a 500 GB one I'm considering from Newegg. Would it be possible to migrate/copy/clone the entire contents of my current hard drive to the 500 GB one? I also have a section of my current hard drive partitioned for Bootcamp. Would this affect my ability to transfer everything over?
If this is possible at all, how can I go about doing so? If there are steps laid out somewhere, I'd appreciate a referral. Sorry if my question is a little elementary, but I did a search on these forums and also google and nothing really came up
