OS X :: Why Does My Memory Keep Disappearing

I'm new to mac and I've noticed that I can have 2 gigs of memory one day and the next I'm down to 24 or something. I've noticed that if I open a file in Itunes and then change the info that there are now 2 files in the finder, one with the old info and the new with the new metadata. Why does OS-X do that?!
Also, if I have 1 gig of memory left (out of 180 or so) why does it disappear to 0 if I open photoshop? I'm used to a PC running virtual memory and CPU but why does the Mac actually take away my available memory?
I'm at my wits end here, it's been driving me up the wall for weeks!

I have a iMac DV G3/500 (Special Edition) from summer 2000. Anyway, I am using Mac OS 10.2.8. Recently, my start up disk's memory has gone done from 1.2 GB available free space to 668MB (currently). I haven't saved anything on this disk so I can not understand why this memory has dissappeared. I have also had icons on the start up menu disappear. Could someone please tell me how I can restore the missing memory?

I have been running out of hard drive space and have deleted a whole bunch of files... even deleted all the languages i didn't need from all my applications... about a week ago i freed up around 2GB.... but without saving and downloading anything my free space is now 70MB!! All I have been doing is watching streamed videos and I notice this reduces the drive space as I'm watching it!! Even opening firefox and some websites drops my memory by 0.1MB. I can't find anywhere where temporary files might be so i can delete them.
I never used to have this problem but I wonder if it has something to do with the fact that I now use wireless internet through a phone provider and a USB modem rather than my previous WiFi via cable broadband. Can anybody shed some light on what is stealing my memory when browsing?

I have a Black MacBook (Early 2008). I think that I still have the factory standard RAM sticks (I bought the Mac used from a friend). I noticed today that I am running on only one gig of RAM even though I have two gigs of memory.

I just bought a early 2009 MAC Pro and it came with 3GB of RAM, I ordered 3 2GB sticks of memory to replace the 3 1GB sticks that I had in there from Kingston. I turned off the unit, I popped the little levers and pulled the memory out of slot 1, 2, 3 and then replaced the memory with the new Kingston in slot 1, 2, 3
One of the sticks in is not working at all and I get the RED LED light no matter what slot I move that chip to. So I am running on 2 of the new Kingston memory chips.
Can I mix the memory and add the 1GB into slot 3 and 4 with slot 1 and 2 full of 2GB chips?
Also how to I run the memory utility again? I went to /system/Library/CoreServices/ and then I see the program Memory Slot Utility.app
How do I run this? I'm used to no spaces and I type ./then program name

I've just updated the os to 10.6.2 and my 16gb mac pro 1,1 only shows 8gb in the system profiler. The memory tab shows they're all working correctly but size says "2gb" where should be "4gb".

I have been using iTunes with my Apple TV's and other devices (iPad's/iPhone's, MacBook etc)But up until a few weeks ago streaming from my main iMac (Master iTunes Library) worked pretty much flawlessly.But not the other devices quite often do not open the iMac Library (Mediaserver)I have to close and reopen iTunes on the iMac and then the devices can fully open, see all content and stream it fine.

I installed 4x2GB memory modules. Now, I have a "Memory Slot Utility" pop-up(The memory modules are installed in the recommended slots) that pops up every time I start my computer. How do I get rid of this notice permanently?

I'm not sure why but whenever I go onto the internet, my wallpaper disappears and it turns blue. If I want to restore it I have to click on a different wallpaper in system preferences then click back to the one I want.

This has happened to me a few time and I'd like to know if others are having the same problem:
Background: MBP 17", 4gb ram, lots of disk space, OSX 10.5.6, all apps located on system disk drive.
Problem: every so often, a random icon will just disappear from the Dock. Today it was Firefox, about a month ago it was iTunes. I can add them back, but why do they leave in the 1st place.

I am trying to drag an item to move it into another folder in the same finder window, but it disappears after 1 second. It is the same way I have always did it, I click on it & can drag across the whole screen from window to window, but now it just disappears. And if I am not close to my destination, it will just move to whatever folder I am over at the time w/o me letting go of the mouse.

I am running Snow Leopard and Time Capsule on a 2009 mini. The last few days files have been randomly disappearing from my desktop. I then must search for the files and with no luck cannot find them. I then have to roll back my time capsule to recover the files. I did not initiate the removal of files and no one else has had access to my computer. This has happened twice. Does anyone know how to fix this?

I have a small problem that didn't happen previously. As you know, when you download something on mac, a download window appears and you see the download progress. And when it's down you simply click on the file to open it, within that same window. But recently all my downloads disappear after they finish downloading and I have to go into Finder and into the downloads folder to find my file which gets a little inconvenient when downloads pile up in the folder. Does anyone know how to fix this?

I have a mid 2009 MacBook Pro (13 inch) 2.53 GHz (Core 2 Duo) with 4 GB RAM. I have a problem- I am sure that I have only used about 15GB space. I have no apps above 1GB. I also have a BootCamp partition. When I click on my OSX (Snow Leopard 10.6) partition (Macintosh HD), the capacity shown is 215GB and remaining is 158GB. About 40GB space just vanished! I used OmniDiskSweeper. The results were that there was 34.1GB being used in Users>.Tusing>Tusing.sparsebundle>bands. In "bands", there are hundreds of 8MB files. What should I do with them? Are they important? Can I delete them? Thank you for your help. I am new to this site. If you do not have an answer, please bump this thread (if thats possible in this forum). UPDATE: I can't see the hidden files in Finder, so should I use defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -bool true to see them? UPDATE: I will keep FileVault on.

After upgrading my MacPro 1,1 to Lion, 2 GB of RAM are not recognized anymore. Â
I have 9 GB installed: 2x2 GB, 4x1 and the original 2x512MB.Â
In Snow Leopard, all 9GB were available, now only 7 GB are displayed. According to the memory info, 2 slots (with 1GB each) are 'empty'. I bought all RAM from Crucial.Â

I have 4GB of RAM on my (aging) MacBook Pro and use a very useful app called Memory Clean to maximize the RAM from time to time.Â
Recently, my laptop has been getting slower and slower to the degree that even opening windows in Finder brings it an almost complete standstill. When I checked the RAM it had decreased to under 10MB.Â
What I've found is that I can run Memory Clean and the more I run it, the more is freed up and the quicker the laptop runs (up to 2GB+ being available). However, within minutes it is plummeting again and so I have to rerun Memory Clean. Suffice to say, the laptop as a whole seems to be struggling.Â
What can I do-and is this a hard drive failing issue or something else?

Has anyone ever had startup programs disappear from the login items preference pane for no apparent reason after reboot? I've had this happen twice over the past year, once in Leopard and once in Snow Leopard. You add some startup apps to the login items in pref pane and reboot and some items are gone and no longer listed in there.

I have about 10 stickies in the Dashboard with info on them. Initially all of the info disappeared (the stickies remained, but blank). I added all the info back in and this morning 7 of them are blank while 3 of them still show the info I typed in.

I have an airport express with my MBP in my dorm but it keeps disappearing from my airport utility. Once in a while i can find it but then i can't find it again until i hard reset. I am using it for its wifi printer and audio uses and not for internet. What can be the problem?

I have replied to another thread, with this same question, but I wasn't getting a response. So I will ask in a new thread On the iTunes Plus Upgrade page in iTunes, where it shows your total cost, and total songs. Mine was showing $45, and around 145 total songs. Now for last few days it has been less than before. It has been showing $43, and 139 total songs for last few days. Why would songs be disappearing from the Upgrade Page? Has this happened to anyone else?

I use Apple's Mail program and also my school's webmail (outlook) in conjunction to check my school email. However, for some strange reason, my inbox on outlook site will only hold up to 2 weeks of mail. My inbox in Mail will still be intact, yet for the life of me, I can't figure out why my webmail inbox is disappearing. I've checked every possible setting on outlook website to no avail. I've also checked Mail's settings, but haven't seen anything as far as deleting older mail. We're allowed 25 gigs on outlook site so they shouldn't be deleting them automatically.

I have an extra internal hard drive (Maxtor) on my Apple Mac.
Recently, I have noticed that the icon on the desktop that represents Maxtor only remains on the desktop for a period of 2-3 days then disappears. I then have to manually restore it but any files saved on it are lost.
Fortunately I do not use this Maxtor drive for saving files to much but I would still like to know how to solve this problem.

I have been trying to figure out why my MBA seems to be so odd?
I am running 10.6.2 OSX and every time I try to move the icons around in the dock they either move place by themselves or delete themselves?
This is especially true with browser icons. For example I could have safari open and try to move the icon in the dock from the far right towards the left ..... It will do this and stay there for approx. 5 seconds and then return back to the far right.?
If I close the safari program the icon disappears from the dock. If I then try to drag the safari program into the dock from the applications folder, it will sit there for 5 seconds again and then just delete itself off the dock. This also happens to Skype, Firefox etc.....
I have tried everything from terminal / killall Dock ..... to deleting files from /Users/~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist etc with nothing working ??
// ps I do have a mobileme account with syncing function but have dock syncing turned off etc .... I have also tried re-booting multiple times after trying different routes and nothing has worked.
After trying nearly everything I can think of (even checking repairing in disk utility) I seem to have drawn a blank.
So I have enclosed a video of my desktop showing the problem of the disappearing icons. The weirdest part is its selective so some icons could stay when being dragged their while other disappear in a matter of seconds?

I have an octo 3.2 GHz 2008 Mac Pro. I have 14 gigs of ram(6x 2gig, 2x 1gig sticks) and they are in the correct order/positions/pairings. My machine would properly show me as having 14gigs of ram for the last 9 months that I've had it however I recently installed windows 7 to one of the hard drives in my machine which proceeded to show me as having 12gigs of ram. When I would go back to OSX it changed to show me as having 12gigs of ram just as Win7 did.
When I unplugged all the extra 2gig sticks I had purchased from OWC and powered on, then off and reinstalled the ram, I got the 14gigs to show again in OSX. However, as soon as I went back to Win7 and then back to OSX I was down to 12 gigs. Does anyone else have this issue or know a solution? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated as I am out of ideas and am tired of opening my machine up over and over again.
