OS X :: When Put CD'S In To Burn, They Come Out With A Consistent Scratch?

May 14, 2009

I have a MBP with the latest OS (the MBP is last the previous model). When I put CD'S in to burn, they come out with a consistent scratch. I double check a cd before the burn, make sure it is scratch free, then burn it and sure enough, it comes out with a scratch. The result is that the cds are not even readable.Does anyone know what could cause this, is it fixable, who should I contact for help, has this happened before, etc?

Mac Pro :: 10.5.7 And ATI 3870 Fan - Consistent Info?

Jun 8, 2009

I've seen a few posts with information about 10.5.7 creating fan problems with the ATI 3870 in 2006 first gen mac pro. There didn't seem to be enough complaints to be a definite problem. I would like to hear from anyone experiencing this problem and from those that upgraded and had no problems. I hope that I can upgrade my OS because 10.6 looks like it will be really great, and I assume any problem with the 3870 would persist through the next OS.

Good news - found a remedy in disabling my screen saver.
I'd like to use my screen saver without getting kernel panics. I've tried erasing my drive and restoring from a back up. resetting PRAM, repaired permissions and ran Tech Tool Pro 5 (file structures and repaired permissions, everything else checked out fine).

Hardware :: WD MyBook Making Consistent Ticking Noise

Jul 19, 2009

This isn't strictly a Mac question, but I know there's a lot of knowledgeable users here and I'm sure some have the MyBooks too. I'm in the middle of the daunting process of reformatting my two 500GB MyBook hard drives (the standard black ones) to a Mac friendly format having been a Windows user for a while... having such a large HD on the iMac makes it not too painful, thankfully. However, I've got one of my drives hooked up at the moment, copying away. It's making a consistent ticking noise as it works.

It's been a while since I asked very much of my drives (generally I just read off them file by file as it were; playing video), so is this noise normal, or is this drive on its way out do you think? As I say, it is a consistent ticking, like the ticking of a clock really rather than scary whirring-clunk noises, and there's no trouble copying files onto my iMac at the moment. I just don't want to copy stuff back over if it's going to die on me. I've got a stack of DVDs here anyway and I think it's about time I updated my DVD copies of my files...

Hardware :: LED Backlight Vs Cathode Tube - Not Getting Consistent Color Between Both Display

Sep 1, 2009

"A man with one clock knows what time it is. A man with two clocks is never sure." Let's amend that "A man with one display knows what color it is. A man with two displays is never sure." I've recently upgraded from a 1st generation MacBook to the 15" Unibody Macbook Pro and I'm having a great deal of trouble adjusting to the difference between the LED backlit internal display, and my Samsung 22" external monitor. I've probably spent about 8 man-hours going through the display calibrator, and through SuperCal, on both devices, and I can't seem to get a consistent color between both displays. Am I doomed to madness? Will I have to spend money on either a hardware calibration device, or on an LED backlit external monitor? Has anyone else solved this?

OS X Mavericks :: Consistent Spinning Beachballs In Pages / Numbers / Preview

Aug 29, 2014

I have an early 2008 imac, running Mavericks.I can open existing Pages and Numbers documents and everything seems to work fine. (using Pages 5)But I can't open a new blank document in Pages or Numbers. (I get spinning beachball, 99%+ cpu, must force quit) Also I can use preview to open any document (pages, numbers, text, jpg), but if I try to export as pdf, it freezes using 99%+ cpu, and must be force quit. I deleted and reloaded Pages, also reloaded Mavericks. it didn't work.I replaced the containers and preference files. No difference.Fontbook did find like 100 warnings in my 800 fonts, no errors though. Other weirdness: Quicktime has lots of weird behavior - opening windows for previously viewed videos, cursor unable to operate the controls or close/minimize windows) I have to use quicktime player 7 instead.

Applications :: Unable To Burn Videos Via Toast / Burn Files From A Network?

Sep 17, 2010

It is supposed to be the best burning package on mac. But I doubt it. I convert videos to dvd-video format using the absolutely brilliant windows7 application convertxtodvd. Please dont tell me to use a mac application instead of it. I tried it many times, there were always several problems(slow speed, subs etc). This is not the case here.

So, I want these dvd-videos in Video_ts format, to be burned in dvd disks using toast. It is supposed that video_ts folder are a standard folder, no matter the system you use. But toast has a different opinion. When I drag the folder in the dvd-video window, it asks to re-encode the video!!!If I try to burn this video_ts folder in windows machine using 'nero', no problem at all, straight burning! I really cannot understand why this happens.

Another problem I have is that the files I want toast to burn, usually reside to network computer. Is there any way to burn files from a network computer(win) using toast? Can toast access network or not? If not, I have to manually copy files to local disk, several minutes spent for copying gigabytes just to be able to burn them.

Applications :: Trying To Burn DVD Using Burn - Failed

Jun 4, 2008

Have a free to distribute educational DVD (preparation for a test) that I need to make a copy of for a friend. Downloaded MacTheRipper and copy the DVD. Next I downloaded a freeware program called Burn that looks simple and is all I need. However I when I try to burn I get an error "Failed: There was a problem authoring the DVD" Also I tried to use the burn to a data DVD mode and it wrote the data to the DVD (you can physically see it's there) but when it got to finalize I got the same error message and you can't read the DVD contents. I have a new Mac Pro running 10.5.3 and the DVD drive is OEM PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-112D.

OS X :: Unable To Burn An Mp4 To DVD / The Data I'm Trying To Burn Is Over 4 Gb's

Dec 25, 2009

I used Handbrake to rip encode the dvd to mp4. Now I want to burn it to a DVD for a cheap backup.

mp4 is 1.4gb

I keep getting an error saying the data I'm trying to burn is over 4 gb's and too big for my blank disc. How's that possible?

Shouldn't I be able to burn the mp4 to a dvd easily in iDVD?

Have tried more than one CD. It does eject, but stalled out on the transfer.

I miss my PC. this has taken an hour for something that should be--well--easy.

Mac Pro :: How To Setup SSD And Scratch Disc

Sep 19, 2010

Looking to put a 120 SSD in my Mac pro as a boot drive but not sure how best to set up along side my HDDs. This was my planned config, but open to advice:

SSD - system + apps

2x 1tb set up as 2tb RAID 0 - work files + home folder

1tb - Time Machine

This leaves one bay spare, but where would be the best place for my scratch disc, on the SSD? If so would a partition be the best option? Working in graphic design, mainly in Photoshop so performance is my main priority.

My question is will this much use on the drive be bad for it? Right now I'm just using external drives and when they fill up I get a new one so I don't put as much use on them as I would with the 2TB drive where I plan on just archiving the footage onto a external hard drive when I am done with project and then continue using the 2TB drive for my next project.

OS X :: Start Time Machine From Scratch?

Sep 26, 2009

Over the past week i have been having big problems with my Time Machine backup drive. My backup drive is an Iomega Helium 500GB partioned as HFS+ Journaled.

I usually backup every two days so i plugged into my macbook pro on wednesday night. I left it for about 15 minutes and came back expecting the backup to be done. Instead I found it was deleting old backups? I thought this was odd as the drive had 150 or so GB free and i only had a few for songs and documents since my last backup on monday. After another 15 minutes i returned to find it was backing up 120GB! I had no idea where it had come up with that insane amount of data. so i checked my mac's hard drive space to find i had 236GB free just like it has been around that for a few weeks. I let it back up and unplugged it later that night. I forgot to backup on friday so i plugged it in this morning. It was deleting old backups again and backing up a further 140GB!

I have now come to the conclusion that i should wipe the drive and start again.

How can I do this?

OS X Server :: Start Installation From Scratch?

May 4, 2009

I've just had OS X Server installed on my server and the numpty who set it up filled in my name wrong, completely the wrong surname. I know this seems like a minor issue but it's just another one of those things I'd like to be right. I can access my server through 'root' 'Local Administrator' and 'iainmorrison' but not one of them will allow me to change the details of 'iainmorrison' For the most part I will login via 'root' though I really would like the main account on the machine to be 'spadge' instead of 'iainmorrison'. I've also just checked through all the tabs of the Server Admin pane and it appears that 'Iain Morrison' also appears in the 'Registered to' box which I really want to change but again, can't, the changes simply revert as soon as I click Save or move to another tab. I know it's a little pedantic but when you have 700 of software on 2000 worth of server it's kinda nice for things to be right without stupid little mistakes like this. Is there any way I can fix this without having to get the guy who set it up to go back to the datacentre and start the installation from scratch?
