OS X :: When I Dim The Display, It Goes All The Way Black?

Sporadically when I hit the key to lower the display's brightness level, instead just dimming it one step down it jumps all the way to the lowest setting making it completely dark. I have had my MBP for about 8 months and never had this problem until the last couple days. Does this have to do with the most recent OS X update? Anyone else having this issue??

PowerPC :: Extremely Dim Display On 12"
I just got an older 12" Powerbook off of eBay. The seller said that the display was damaged from a spill. When I received it, it powered on fine but I noticed that I could still see everything on the screen, just had to look real close or open things up against a white background. I assumed that it needed a new inverter board. I got a working one but when I installed it, it didn't solve my problem. So I pulled a working screen (display, lcd, inverter, etc.) off of another 12" Powerbook and installed it. The screen is still dim! Does anyone know what else I can do to solve my problem?

MacBook :: Display Brightness - Screen Go Dim After Sometimes
Recently, after about 5 minutes of use (not sitting idle), my MacBook's screen will go very dim. I hit the buttons on the keyboard to take the brightness all the way up, but it doesn't get much brighter and there's only one thing that I can do to make the screen go brighter: I go into System Preferences and click Display. The second I click that, the brightness returns without me doing anything in the Display section, so after Display comes up, I just close it out and the screen brightness is fine for a while. It seems to do this after the lid has been closed for a while and then starts dimming again after opening the lid and using it for about 5 minutes. Is there a way to fix the auto-dim mode without disabling it? MacBook (white) is running Leopard 10.5.8 with all the latest updates.

MacBook Pro :: Bottom Sides Of Display Relatively Dim?
i think that there is something wrong with my macbook display, but i am not very sure. This problem has been there since the day i bought my macbook so i thought there was nothing wrong till i read one of a post in this forum.

The bottom sides of the macbook screen seems relatively dim as compared to the other sides of the screen and specially prominent when viewed in a white screen. Is there something wrong with the backlight? Should i send to an apple service centre then?

Power Mac G5 :: Display Began To Dim Progressively First From Top And Then From Bottom
I have a Dual 2.5Ghz Power Mac G5 and a 30" Cinema Display. The Power Mac G5 was out of order for quite a while but I just had it fixed. When it was out of order, I could not boot into OS X. But when the display did show something, like the Apple Hardware Test screen, the display began to dim progressively, first from top, and then from bottom. Finally my Power Mac G5 was sent to a local Apple-authorized service provider, which had all hardware checked. But now the display still dims progressively, first from top and then from bottom. I ran Apple Hardware Test again and everything was shown to be OK, including the display card. I tried to connect the display with my MacBook Pro instead, and there is no dimming.

MacBook Pro :: Unibody With 10.6.2 Forgets To Auto - Dim Its Display After About Day
After about a day of use my Unibody MBP 13" running 10.6.2 forgets how to auto-dim its display. The "automatically adjust brightness" checkbox is still checked, but the display doesn't change brightness even if I put my thumb over the sensor. Checking & unchecking the box makes no difference. Trashing ~ System Preferences .plist makes no difference.

If I switch to another user that user still has auto-dimming working OK. If I log out and in again auto-dim works again for a day or two. So it seems like software and not hardware. I've also reset the SMC, no difference.

- have the same problem?
- know what bit of software handles auto-dim:- is there a process I can quit and relaunch?
- useful suggestions eg about .plist trashing?

OS X V10.5 Leopard :: IMac Screen Went Black - Starts Up With Black Display
I came back from work to wake up my iMac. It made the noise but the screen stayed black. I tried restarting by holding the power button- I can hear it start and the chime but still have a black screen. I tried resetting the pram, and unplugging the cord but I still get a black screen. I can hear the chime though; I'm not sure if that means anything. I just had the hard drive replaced in February so I hope it's not that. just wanted to clarify that when I restart, I get the chime but the screen stays black- I don't get to the grey screen. So I'm assuming right now that my display may be shot?

ON my very new 21.5 imac, the screen has gone black a few times, may or may not wake up from sleep or boot.. and, has required a PRAM, or a SMC reset. The computer part wakes up, disks, fan, etc... but the display doesn't light up... First I try a PRAM reset.. and then a SMC reset if needed.. This morning, I had to go to the SMC reset It's running now, but I have other iMac's and they work flawlessly.. I would think this should too!

MacBook :: Finding An External Display That Matches My Black MacBook Display
As the title states. I am looking for an external display that matches the display on my black MacBook. I want one with the same gloss finish as my MacBook, this way I can calibrate both screens to look the same. That way when I switch screens it doesn't look different.

Anyone know of a screen that looks identical to the (previous generation) MacBook? I was thinking of getting a Samsung T240 but it has a different finish. How are ASUS screens? Any screens out there that have the same gloss finish?

OS X :: No Display At Screen - Remains Black
I was browsing the internet, not doing anything major, put the computer to sleep, came back 10 minutes later... black screen. I messed with it for an hour or so and determined that the video card went bad (I'm guessing. It's a mid 2007 macbook pro with the nvidia geforce 8600m. My secondary monitor remains black as well). In the midst of totally freaking out, I decided to activate the voiceover utility, enable screen sharing (after figuring out a slew of keyboard commands I didn't know about), and logged in from my girlfriends computer.

I immediately closed all the windows and applications that I had inadvertently opened during the blind wtf session, and opened up system profiler to see if it is recognizing a video card. Well, it is! It's listing the video card as a GMA x3100! Is there a secondary card in there? Cause if there is, it's not working either. Or is that just a default they would put in if it doesn't recognize a video card? Doesn't seem likely. Or, because I'm using screen sharing, is it picking up my girlfriends card? It's not, because she's using a GMA 950. Maybe it's splitting the difference?

MacBook Pro :: Display Just Goes Black
I have a 2007 santa rose mbp and recently I have been having display issues. Out of nowhere is seems that my display just goes black. You can tell that the screen is still on because of the backlighting; its just the picture that seems to disappear. However, the computer still seems to be working fine. I can remote screen share and use the computer normally as if nothing happened. I have no idea if this is some kind of a hardware or software problem... Can this be an indication of the 8600M GT dying?

OS X Leopard :: Black Border Around External Display?
I've liked using external displays to play movies from my hard drive for a while now. I used to hook up a 20" TV to my MBP using a DVI to S-Video cable. The display would work, but there was always about an inch-and-a-half thick border around the entire picture. When I changed the resolution, it only changed the resolution within the box. When I turned on overscan, the picture expanded, but the edges were then significantly cut off. I thought this was all probably a problem with using S-Video.

However, I just recently moved, bought a Belkin DVI to HDMI cable, and hooked up my MBP to a 32" LG LCD television. Same problem! how I can make it fill the whole screen?

Power Mac G5 :: Display Goes Black But HD Still Running When Sleep
For quite sometime now, I've had a problem with my G5 (dual 2GHz) where I put it to sleep and the display goes black, but the G5 is still apparently running--that is, there's no change in fan speed or hard drive noise. Nothing I do will get the display back on; at that point, the only solution seen to be to to do a forced power-down (holding the power button). Nothing seems to trigger this, except possibly the following: if I put the machine to sleep and it then wakes up moments later (e.g., I accidentally nudge the mouse or remember I need to do one last thing), and I put it to sleep very soon after.

The problem occurs with the second sleep. This isn't a definite if-then; that is, it seems to be quite a bit more likely to happen under those circumstances but isn't a sure thing, and I know it's happened at other times. I'd bring it in but the work disruption for something that I suspect will be hard to diagnose (or, at least, reproduce) isn't something I look forward to. FWIW, the G5 has a "new" motherboard/power supply, swapped in in the last month or so before my extended Applecare ran out.

IMac Intel :: Display Goes Black Apps Probably Still Working
I have a Intel Core 2 Duo iMac 20" Display. Randomly the built-in display will go completely black. A reboot usually clears it and I can operate as usual. However, it seems to be occurring more often and the applications are probably still running as I was using Skype (a possible culprit?) and I was still able to communicate with the other person. Obviously, I couldn't see them, but audio was still functioning and I can only assume other applications were still running. The machine was purchased in 2006 I believe, and the extended warranty ran out 6 months ago. Darn. Anyway, I'm hoping for the best and some insight to the steps to fix myself. I can find my way around well and am not afraid to pull it apart if I need to.

MacBook Pro :: Line Across Screen - Display Goes Black Sometimes
I have a 2009 MacBook Pro and only recently began to have screen problems. Fairly infrequently (around once a week) the screen will go black for a few seconds and will then return to normal. As of this morning I now always have a solid line across my screen (horizontal, above the center of the screen). It started as a flickering line, but is now present at all times. I've tried restarting my computer, but with no luck. I don't think my computer is overheating (smcFanControl lists the temp at 52C) and am out of other ideas to try.

Mac Pro :: Display Goes Black On Login Screen?
Sometimes, not always, when i switch on my Mac Pro, it starts up as normal until the log in screen should appear. At this moment the screen goes black.

I checked the connection and the display settings. Nothing. I then spot that setting the Mac Pro to sleep and waking up again solves the problem. The log in screen appears, everything is ok from then on.
So i think the display is not the problem. It is not in standby mode! I think the Mac or the OS sometimes doesn't recognize the display correctly and then send a black signal. But it must send a signal because otherwise the display would show this message that no input signal is present.

Mac Pro :: Black Screen Display On Startup
I have a Mac Pro (Early 2008) running on 10.5.8 OSX with apple 20" display and 16G RAM.

Initially started with my MACPRO not waking up from sleep and has to force the shut down with power button. Finally realised it was due to my Epson scanner connected via USB...

The main issues now is with the display, black screen on startup. I can still control the volume and disk eject/close, just no display. Force shut down with power button numerous time but futile. Finally solved it with SMC reset.

it becomes an on and off issues... and continuously I solved it with SMC reset.... sometimes needed 2 or 3 resets to get it to work, and finally for the past few days... SMC reset can't solve it either... no display on startup, and same thing I can control the volume and disk eject/close. Have tried my monitor on other mac and it worked fine.

Now this is strange. if I let the mac cool off totally, after a SMC reset. the display will comes up fine...

For the past few weeks it has been going to a black screen when trying to wake it up from sleep. Either I've put it through too much work lately editing all these photos and its really tired. So, often it wakes up normally and functions fine, well, not really. It is seemingly very slow. It requires a lot of time (more than before) to open up a program or it gives me the "spinning wheel of death" when trying to go to a different page on the internet or open up a folder on my desktop. Amongst other things that require it to think. So It's just a lot slower in general than before.

OS X :: Display Adapter For 13" Black MacBook Model 3.1?
I have a 6 year old PowerBook G4 12" (Model 6,1) hooked up to a 20" VGA display using the Apple Mini-DVI to VGA adapter that came with the computer. Perfect performance for several years. I now want to hook up my early 2008 Black MacBook Intel Core 2 Duo 2.2 GHz. (Model 3,1) to the same monitor. The "Mini-DVI" connector on the MacBook computer does not mate with my adapter! It is real close in size and shape, but is obviously a different connector design.

The MacBook manual says the display port is a "Mini-DVI". The older PowerBook manual also says it's display port is a "Mini-DVI." Apple's site implies that the two computers require the same adapter, but that is obviously wrong. Some of the product reviews say that the Apple information is wrong, but no one has posted the correct information (part number). Is there an adapter for the black MacBook to VGA? I've spent all afternoon searching (including here an MacRumors) for the real part number for an adapter. No luck. I have also tried several Apple phone numbers and the chat forum, all with no results. Does anyone know what I should order to adapt the MacBook display port to a VGA cable, and from where?

My 20" Cinema display doesn't light up. It flashes 3 lights: short, long, short, which I believe is the error code associated with having the wrong power supply plugged in. Display has worked fine for the last few years and this is the power supply which came with the display. The display was working fine, then the powerstrip it was plugged into was switched off accidentaly. Now it no longer functions.
