OS X :: What Is Difference Between Inspector And Get Info In Finder
Oct 23, 2008
what the difference is between selecting a file in finder and pressing command-I ("get info") vs option-command-I ("inspector")? At first glance, there appears to be absolutely no difference except for the fact that the Inspector "close window" button is much, much smaller, while the "get info" window controls are more conventionally-sized (same size as Safari or Finder window buttons).

in Windows a folder can use ID3 tag information from music files for display in a column view just like you would see music displayed in iTunes. (Title, Artist, Album, etc.) I have an extensive library of music (600+ GB) and sometimes I'm working with multiple external drives. I'm also constantly adding to the collection as I get new music. Being able to see all of this data in the OS window makes managing the music on multiple drives much easier. We're talking about folders with 1000's of songs in them. I don't want to have to set up mutiple iTunes libraries for each external drive and deal with the headache of switching back and forth between them.

According to Finder, my hard drive has 83.69GB available.According to iStat, my hard drive has 77.94GB available. With the 7GB freed up from installing Snow Leopard, iStat seems like the one that should be correct, seeing as how I had ~68GB or free with Leopard.Which one should I trust, and why is there a discrepancy?

I recentlyªposted a question describing a problem I was having when viewing files in column view in the finder: when I click on a file, which would usually cause a pane to the right to open showing a preview of the item and information on the file, the finder hangs and I see an spinning disc. Just now I tried using the finder's Get

A couple OS's ago I remember if you opened a finder window on your desktop and if the column view was open it would attempt to create a preview, making your system completely useless until that preview was generated. It seems that this has been mostly addressed in Leopard, but still exists somewhat. But I've now discovered sadly another place where it exists and it has just cost me an hour of uploading time. getting info on idisk. I was uploading a large photoshop file on my idisk, 2GB, and I had 2 minutes left.
I accidentally did command I on a file on my idisk directory thinking it was my local directory. The file I got info on was 1.4GB.. it's now stuck trying to generate a preview image for that damn photoshop file and my poor 2GB upload that was 2 minutes away has apparently decided it was less important to finish uploading and to generate this damn preview! Which probably entails downloading the whole thing first.

I am using a Mac Mini (mid-2011) running Lion Server 10.7.4. I have noticed lately that when I check files the Sharing & Permissions portion using Get Info on my files I find that there are two lines for each user on my computer. The first set of lines says Read & Write which I actually selected. The second set of lines says Custom. When I check I have the list Read & Write, Read, Custom. When I try to change Custom I cam select new option No Privileges Info. For the other users I am able to delete the extra line once I select No Privileges Info.
However even though I have more than one line I cannot delete the extra line for the main user. I will try and delete the extra line for the main user logged in as someone else that has what I have defined as admin privileges (reason I have more than one user). This really concerns me because this issue is causing problems with me adding or removing files as needed in the terminal. When I try I get this funky error:
"Dubious permissions on file (skipping): filename with duplicate entries for a user."
This is happening more and more even though I am not changing the file permissions that I am aware of.

In upgraded to Safari 5.1.4 last night. Now I have multiple crashes in web inspector. I want to look at the history.state object in the console, so I type history the the period and web inspector crashes.I was debugging some javascript and part way through, web inspector crashes. Web inspector did not do this with 5.1.3. Being new to the Mac world. I have a MacBook Pro and would like to revert back to Safari 5.1.3 so I can complete my project. Does anyone know how I can revert to the previous version of Safari? I am unable to do my work.

Three crashes in a row, one even after rebooting. Different Projects selected and being selected. Crashes immediately after I select a Project in the Library Inspector, either by pressing and releasing the down-arrow key or by clicking with the mouse. Projects are newly imported, but have not shown any problems. Each Project that was the one being selected when Aperture crashed can be viewed in the Browser (confirmed afterwards). Aperture normal otherwise. C. 70K Images in Library. Â
First set of Projects with new camera (Nikon 1 AW 1 — gets my recommendation if you want a submersible camera with better-than-snapshot quality files) — but have not had any problems importing files or viewing Images or videos.Â
Did change the time-stamps on c. 1,500 Images a few minutes before crashes started. (Is there a dongle-doo-hickey-thing-a-jig that will sync the time settings on multiple cameras?)Â
Here is the opening of the latest crash log (from crash reporter window):
Process:Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Aperture [358]
Path:Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â /Applications/Aperture.app/Contents/MacOS/Aperture
Identifier:Â Â Â Â Â com.apple.Aperture

Normally, the Finder window will display a folder's size in the Size column. However, I have one folder which shows as "Zero KB" in the Size column. When I open the General Info window, the Size reads as "Zero KB on disk (Zero bytes) for 0 items."
In order to get the folder size I have to go into the folder, select all folders, then with either the Summary Info or Inspector window, it'll show the folder size ("185.32 GB on disk").
Why is this occurring in only this folder? Is it because it's a large folder?
I'm running Snow Lep 10.6.2. The folder is on an external drive in FAT32 format.

I recently switched from windows Microsoft Word to Mac pages. I just wanted to know how, when I press tab to go to a new bullet indent level, I can make it do a certain order (Circular bullet, dash, Another kind of bullet, etc.) without changing the type of bullet through the inspector each time.

Sometimes I simply cannot open a new finder window. If I use Command-N or if I choose New Finder Window in the Finder menu, nothing happens. If I am using Command-N, I can see the File heading in the Finder menu bar highlighting, and then after a few seconds the highlight goes, but no window opens. Also, clicking on my Downloads icon in the dock, the dialog opens showing all the files, but if I then click on Open in Finder, the dialog closes but nothing happens. Now that I am writing this message, it all works again! That's what I mean by 'sometimes'. This issue can last for tens of minutes. Secndly, and this is still a problem, my finder Preferences do not stick. So for instance, I don't want to see an icon for my hard disk on the desktop, so I untick this in Finder preferences. The icon disappears. If I now re-start, then it comes back. The same happens for removing the empty trash warning and all of the other Finder Preference tick boxes.Â
Now, when the first problem of not being able to open a finder window suddenly stopped being a problem, the icon for the hard disk suddenly appeared on my desktop. So the two issues are linked. This has been going on intermittently for a few days. I have verified my disk, and repaired permissions.

I upgraded my MacBook Pro quad core 2.5 from Lion to Mavericks. Since then I get a LOT of beachballs when I'm using Finder. I repaired permissions, deleted com.apple.finder.plist (twice) and finally reinstalled Mavericks over the first one. Still painfully slow and lots of beachballs.

Today I tried to change the finder icon in the dock. Because I'm cheap, I dont have candybar, so I tried to use liteicon. While this changed the finder icon in messages like "do you want to empty trash," it did not change it on the dock, even after logging out and relaunching the dock.
So I went into a bunch of core services and replaced all the finder .icns and .pngs with the one I wanted to use. When I relaunched the dock, the finder was invisible, but it still had the little blue "open" dot below where it was.I downloaded the candybar trial to try to fix it, but even candybar didn't get the icon back.
I'm using 10.5.8. Where are all the places the finder icon should be to show up?

Wasn't this an option previous to 10.7.4? It doesn't work now. When clicking the Finder icon in the Dock, a new Finder window would open? I know about Finder prefs - General - Always open folders in new window but this isn't what I mean.I'd have a Finder window open then want to copy/move something so I clicked on the Finder icon in the dock to get a new window.Every time I clicked the Dock icon, I'd get a new Finder window.

When I close a finder window, the finder menu disappears and then reappears along with the finder window. It looks like finder is crashing and restarting. This started happening after I downloaded a pdf and put it in a folder. Maybe there is a bug in the way finder is rendering the image of the pdf file at the top of the finder window?Â
How can I restore normal behavior of finder?

I am one of the many folks who use a PC and have been considering a Mac. I have read many posts on the subject of Macs vs PCs, that the Mac OS is more stable, doesn't get infected with viruses or spyware (I would assume virus/spyware writers go for the biggest target, Windows), and is ''easier'' to use.
Can someone please explain in plain english how a Mac is easier to use? I assume there are similarities like the use of file architecture and ''windows'', but why is Mac's way of running say Photoshop Elements better? Why, specifically, is the Mac OS better than Windows if you take out the virus/spyware issue? BTW, maybe I'm lucky, but in the 3 months I've been running XP, I haven't had a single crash, blue screen, or virus. Of course I'm knocking on wood!

I have a 12.1" ibook G4 [A1054] with a broken 2.5" IDE hard drive. I have an old IDE hard drive that was in a Gateway laptop. Is there any reason that I would not be able to install this drive in the ibook? Is there anything fundamentally different between hard drives in macs and hard drives in windows based machines?
The hard drive that was in the ibook is a 30GB and the Gateway one is a 60GB. I'm not sure if that would matter either.
If compatibility is not an issue, am I going to have any problems formatting the old Gateway HD or installing software on it?
Also, can anyone recommend a site that would be a good place to buy a 2.5" IDE hard drive in case I want to use a different one?

I'm looking to finally upgrade my Mac Pro to use an SSD as a boot drive, and I've been eyeing the OCZ Vertex 2 drives as a result of the beloved Sandforce controller. My question is, the only OCZ drives I've been able to find at the price point I want in my area are the Vertex 2 3.5 120 gig editions.

Is there any reason NOT to get this over the 2.5 version? I'm not planning on putting it in the optical bay as both are in use, and would just go in a regular hard drive bay. It's unfortunate that I wont one day be able to use it in my Macbook Pro should I ever upgrade however, beyond this am I suffering any penalty by going with the larger size?

I just received a logic board replacement for my iMac G5. I noticed a difference in the "Processor Name" in the "About this Mac". My old logic board was labeled: CPU Type: PowerPC G5 (3.1) The new replacement logic board is labeled: Processor Name: PowerPC G5 (3.0) What's the difference between the 3.1 and the 3.0 CPU Type or Processor Name? Did they replace my logic board with an older version? I am in China where they can put anything in anything - you never know!

Is there a simple way (i.e. 100% free, including using the Terminal) to determine which files in one folder are NOT in another, disregarding any extensions the files in each folder have?
One way I thought I could approach this, using the Terminal:
Code:
ls /path/to/first/folder > folder1.txt
ls /path/to/second/folder > folder2.txt
diff folder1.txt folder2.txt
Only problem is that this does NOT ignore extensions, so all the lines in both text files will be reported as different. This is NOT what I want.
