May 1, 2008I was a PC user who recently moved to mac. I have a macbook (intel 2.2GHz, 2GB RAM, 250GB HDD). When I was using PC, I backed up all my data to a network storage device (Buffalo LinkStation 250 GB connected to a 802.11g netgear router which is supplied by Sky) using a program called SmartSync Pro, which worked very well. Although I can connect to and mount the Share folder on this drive when the macbook is connected to the network, Time Machine will not back up to it. It wouldnt even recognise the disk on the network.
So I went onto the trusty internet, and found that you can get time machine to recognise the Share folder. (This was obtained from: http://blog.imulus.com/george/software/using-leopard-time-machine-to-backup-of-a-network/)See my comment on their page at the bottom, number 66.
It recommended entering the following in to the Terminal: defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1
Before attempting backup I have to go into "Network" and select the Share folder by double clicking on it. This seems to mount the volume. After this, it can be seen in Time Machine as a potential backup destination.
However, this method does not work for me. Time Machine "prepares" for a while, then gives the following message: Time Machine error. The backup disk image could not be created.
More internet searching took me to macosxhints which suggests creating something called a sparsebundle image on my local system. (http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20080420211034137) Have not tried this yet as I thought it would be prudent to seek some help first.
Apple have deliberately disabled the ability for Time Machine to back up to network attached storage, (except of course to their proprietory Time Capsule):
Is this because time machine requires a network faster than 802.11g?
Is this because a time machine backup to a network attached storage device is unreliable and the data is corrupted?
I dont want to shell out more cash for a time capsule. I would prefer not to have to hardwire to an external drive (which I will also have to go out and buy). Any thoughts?

Indeed there is one "unknown" in permissions, that I cannot get to a read write no matter how hard I try -- both on the folder, the desktop, and the file (this is all on my laptop) I've done a repair permission.

Jun 4, 2009I take total bootable backups of my macbook pro with superduper application, to an external hard disk. In a few months I plan to buy a new mbp, and I would like to know if it is possible to 'copy' my whole osx system environment(applications, data, everything) to the new machine, using this superduper backup, with the appropriate restoration process.
Can I boot the mac from the external hard disk, then run superduper, and use 'copy' option of superduper to copy the osx environment from external hard disk to internal hard disk? I think that everything should work fine but I do not know if it will appear any new hardware/configuration problem.
OS X :: Unable To Mount Backup Disk Image?
Jan 6, 2009for the past month or so my automated backups with time machine/time capsule have not been working. Every so often the following error message pops up:
"the backup disk image could not be mounted"
in troubleshooting, i have tried to mount the sparsebundle image directly but without success. from reading around a bit i can see that others have had this problem, and that one solution is to delete the sparsebundles and start again.
but that of course means losing all my archived backups, which i would rather avoid.

Jun 23, 2010So my current backup strategy uses two western digital external hard drives. The first I have permanently connected to my iMac using Time Machine. On the second I use CCC to backup to every week and keep it in the trunk of my car as an offsite backup.
Just had a couple of questions to make sure I'm prepared for the worse...
- What temperatures can hard drives survive at? Is there a risk of it overheating in my car?
- I've read about some issues with CCC's backups. I'm currently backing up to an encrypted disk image - is there any way to verify the backup? If I just cloned the drive instead so it was bootable is there any way to encrypt it? And is Super Duper more reliable?

Windows On Mac :: BootCamp Backup (Cloning / Image) Restore
Sep 17, 2010I would like to "Backup", "Clone" or create an "Image" or whatever else people call it of my bootcamp installation. I know I can create an "Image" of bootcamp via disk utility but how would I restore it? Would I first delete the bootcamp partition and then re-create a bootcamp partition and then restore? Or would I just restore? Will the end result be what I am expecting, i.e., my Win 7 install right back to the perfect state of when I created the image?
Right now, let's say my Windows 7 install got smoked one day for whatever reason (it is windows) and I needed to re-install. Me personally, I would just go into Bootcamp Assistant, delete the Windows partition then create a new one and then get installing. Unfortunately installing and updating takes hours and that is what I am trying to avoid.

I don't remember changing any settings or anything recently but within the last 2 weeks or so I haven't been able to backup at all. When I start backing up it says "preparing backup" then an error message pops up that says "The backup disk image could not be mounted".

I've been exploring the options of the Windows XP Backup utility, but I also like being able to have a entire disk image with Winclone. However there's no way to back up incrementally with Winclone. Jun 7, 2012Two days ago my computer died and I haven't been able to get past the Apple screen since. I've tried starting in Safe mode, etc. that did not work. I just started up using my installation disk and got into Disk Utility. It says it cannot repair the disk and that I should back up as many files as possible and reformat the disk. How am I supposed to back up if I can't start up? I am currently creating a new image of the HD to an external drive but my question is if Disk Utility couldn't repair the disk, with the external drive copy also be problematic? How can I tell before I reformat the whole thing and start over?

Mar 20, 2012I just purchased a Seagate 3 TB USB 2.0/3.0 external drive to use as my time machine backup drive. I have a MacBook Pro that was purchased about 3-4 years ago. The MacBook Pro has a 120 GB hard drive and is currently running MAC OSx 10.6.8. I also have another WD 1 TB FireWire external drive that I use to store all of my media files.
After I followed the instructions for installing the new Seagate drive for use with the MAC OSx, I initiated a time machine backup. It very quickly determined that it needed to back up almost 900,000 files totaling just about 400 GB. It started the backup process at a rate of about 1 GB per minute. In a little less than an hour it reach 53 GB and remained there for an additional two hours before I decided to stop the backup.
Once I got the backup stopped, I deleted the backup and decided to look at my energy saving settings. I noticed that the "Put drives to sleep whenever possible" check box was checked, so I unchecked that option and restarted the MAC. I then initiated the time machine backup again. Like the first time it quickly determined that it needed to backup the same amount of data as before and started the backup process at a rate of about 1 GB per minute. Before going to bed at around 11 PM last night it was at about 60 GB so I thought I was out of the woods (having gotten further than the 53 GB earlier). When I woke up this morning at 5:30 AM it was sitting at 69 GB.
I am really frustrated at this point and don't know why the time machine back up would be failing on a brand new hard drive. PS - I was previously using a Seagate 1.5 TB USB drive as my time machine backup and never had any issues with it. I decided to use the 1.5 TB drive for a different purpose, which is why I have the new 3 TB drive to use as a backup. And I still have the full backup on the 1.5 TB drive just in case anything were to go awry.

OS X V10.5 Leopard :: Backup Drive Ejects After TM Backup?
May 7, 2012I have an external 1TB WD My Passport drive which I use for TM backup's. When I plug in via USB, DriveUnlock appears. I unlock the drive, then instigate a TM backup. All goes fine, then from what I can gather, when the TM backup has finished, the drive ejects itself. There is no error messages, unmount drive issues, it just dissappears from finder. I can only assume the backup has been successful, as no error messages appear, meaning the drive wasn't ejected while backup was in progress. I have changed the USB cable, as well as tried different ports, but the same always happens. In System Preferencies/Energy Saver, I have made sure the Put HD to sleep is un ticked. Still it happens. Has anyone else had this problem, and is it fixable? I would love to keep the drive attached and backing up for the period I am working, usually 12 hours a day, rather than the once a day at the moment.

Mar 24, 2012I've notice that when time machine does a backup to an external drive it creates a file "image backup" I would like to know why is this file empty? I've check through all my backups and everytime this file appears to be empty.
Also when Time Machine does a backup of your computer, then all the photos from photobooth should appear in the photobooth library file right?

Sep 29, 2009When I eventually upgrade to Snow Leopard, I'd ideally like to do a fresh install (I did Tiger>Leopard as an upgrade install), but I really don't want to have to go through the hassle of reinstalling all my apps afterwards. So, would the following work as a best-of-both-worlds alternative?
1. Update my backup bootable system drive image on my external FW drive
2. Wipe the drive in my MBP and do a fresh install of SL
3. Use the Migration Assistant to automagically copy all my data and apps over from the backup drive as if I was upgrading from an old Mac to a new one
On paper at least, it looks like it ought to "just work"... but I'm wondering whether or not Migration Assistant will work between a Mac and an external drive, or does it have to be between two actual Macs?

Jun 18, 2012I am having a strange problem with image thumbnails not appearing in Finder. I am editing some very large TIF files on a Macbook that is running Lion. These images are edited on an external drive, and when I hook the drive up to my main iMac, which is running Leopard, the new images I have created in Lion do not have thumbnails. The only way that they will appear is if I open the images in Photoshop and just resave them on the machine running Leopard. This method poses a problem because each image takes about 5-8 minutes to open, and another 5-8 to save. I have hundreds of images and don't have the time to do that to each one.

Nov 28, 2009So I recently got a new iMac that has Snow Leopard and I noticed that this is about the second time that my mouse cursor has gotten stuck... not stuck in location, but the image of the cursor.
I'll move over a textbox and then it changes to the I bar cursor, but then I move away and it stays that... I move over a link and it turns into the finger icon, then I move away and it's still a finger.
Still in the beginnings of diagnosing, but I do have two user accounts logged in. The other account only has a Safari window open though, nothing exciting.

I have tried / boot from DVD, then go to Disk Utility, file/ create new image from disk but the process stops imediatlly with a. cant unmount drive, b. drive is busy, c. in use how the drive is in use is not sensable, as it should be as 'just a drive' This is on a laptop with OSX 10.5.8 / 32gig hd, 2 gig ram, just in case it matters.
