My PowerPC G4 crushed. After repairs, I installed 10.4.11. I have 512 MB DDr SDRAM. The problem is the following: I noticed there are two volumes on my desktop. One, with about 7 GB is where the system is. The other contains about 63 GB with a some files in it. I went to update my system but it asks for more memory. I am guessing the 63 GB volume is not recognized.
View 3 RepliesI recently decided to increase the volume of my bootcamp disk, which I had done in the past using a method which ultimately made the disk unrecognizable. This time around I used Winclone to create an image of my bootcamp disk. I was not sure exactly how Winclone worked and to be safe I decided to keep the Bootcamp disk I had, and I created a third partition of a larger volume to which I restored the bootcamp image. Everything worked fine obviously, and the image was restored correctly to the new larger volume. The dilemma is I had two bootcamp disks, so I erased the smaller volume because I no longer needed it. Currently I am trying to restore this empty space within the main disk to the Macintosh HD. Disk util looks like:
I know I can just create a backup of the macintosh HD, another image of the bootcamp disk, and format the disk and start over, but I am hoping there is an easier way to go about this; considering there has been a method engineered such that I can just drag that corner of the mac HD and voila I have instantly more storage after applying, it seems viable that there is something that can be done rather than formatting my disk, unless the necessity for that of course was overlooked.

I have XP running beautifully on a 150 GB Raptor (via bootcamp). I'm thinking of adding Vista, but I'd like to avoid formatting the drive and creating two partitions for XP and Vista.
Can I slice off some of the 150 GB for Vista leaving XP intact?
I have 2 partitions on my MacBook drive. One is OS X Leopard, and the other is a Windows XP Bootcamp Partition (FAT32). When I made the Bootcamp partition, I cloned up my OS X partition to a USB drive (using Carbon Copy Cloner), replaced the OS X partition with the clone (to defragment it), and then partitioned it using Bootcamp. I decided I wanted a larger Windows XP Bootcamp Partition, and so I removed the partition using Bootcamp, recloned and replaced the OS X partition with the recloned backup (to defragment it, once again), and then used Bootcamp again to partition it, this time with a larger partition size. The first time I partitioned it, everything worked great. Ever since the second time, though, when I hold option during startup to change boot volumes, the volume that once said "Macintosh HD" now says "EFI Boot." Also, my OS X partition is no longer the default partition, and when I lookt at the Startup Disk in the System Preferences, my OS X partition is not listed among them. This is the same when I look at the "Startup Disk" preferences on the Windows XP partition, using the Boot Camp application, and when I click "Startup in Mac OS X," I get the error: "Could Not Locate Mac OS X Volume."
I had been ignoring the problem, simply holding option on startup and choosing the "EFI Boot" volume. This was working fine until today, when I finally came around to updating OS X. I ran Software Update, which told me I had to restart my computer. When I did, it went through the whole updating progress bar screen for a while, and then restarted the computer. When the computer restarted, it restarted in Windows XP, so I shut down the computer, booted it up, and held option. I chose "EFI Boot" when I was given the choice, and it started booting to my OS X partition. About a minute or two after I chose "EFI Boot," the computer unexpectedly rebooted into Windows XP again. I restarted the computer, again holding option and choosing "EFI Boot," and again it unexpectedly restarted. How can I get back into my OS X partition? Is there a way I can clone my OS X partition and replace it like I've done in the past? (Note: I have MacDrive 7, and have seen an option for backing up drives on there in the past, but have never used it.) Why is my OS X partition showing up as "EFI Boot"
I reinstalled Snow Leopard on a new volume, transferred stuff I wanted from the old volume to the new volume, and deleted the old one. In disk utility, I have not been able to stretch the volume to fit where the old one was. I can't change the volume scheme. Has anyone got a method to let me use my full 160GB hard drive rather than half of it? Or maybe software that can alter it.

I read online I could do this my shrinking the Mac HDD and then creating a new partition FAT32. Then open up windows and open up disk management. Then right click my bootcamp hdd and click "extend volume." however, that option is greyed out. Am I missing something or is there some other technique?

So after going into Disk Utility and "trying" to erase and partition the drive, it now only shows the drive and no volumes.I cannot create or partition volumes. I tried verifying and repairing the disc but that didn't do anything. The only buttons available are Verify, Info and Burn. What do I do to use the drive again?

At first I thought the way to go for this, based on some stuff I read here on Mac Rumors was to use winclone to clone the windows partition,restore it to the new drive, and then I don't know what.I did the restore, there were errors in the log though..something about the wrong kind of partition. Basically it's become a pain in the ass, and I'm thinking there has to be an easier way.
It occurred to me, I might be able to use "Install and Archive" to move the boot volume to the new disk, moving the user files and network settings with it. If I did this would I be able to expand the windows partition using winclone utilizing the full hard drive? Or could moving the boot volume to the new disk mess up my Windows partition?
Now, I set up a partition to run Ubuntu on my MacBook, but now I want to remove that partition to make room for Windows XP. When I go to Boot Camp Assistant, I try to click 'Continue' but it gives me this: I thought I could fix the problem using Disk Utility, but I couldn't understand what I could do. I thought it would work by erasing them, but I may have made the problem worse. Here is what it looks like: I tried booting the Ubuntu disc as I read I could remove the partition using that, but I don't understand how that would work.

I am unable to reinstall the default OS (Mountain Lion) because I have yet to be able to partition the HDD correctly. The error I keep getting is: Partition failed with the error: Wiping volume data to prevent future accidental probing failed.At this point, the default Macintosh HD isn't showing, so it must of been erased/deleted.

I have a Mac Pro and not too long ago I swapped from a fat, heavy and filthy white Apple Keyboard to a new skinny silver one. I like it, and also love that the F7-9 Skip Back-Pause/Play-Skip Forward keys work for iTunes, even when another app is active (what's the word I'm looking for - in focus or whatever). But I use Optical output, so the volume keys (F10-12) don't do anything. I know that, when iTunes is the active app, I can command-+/- to change the volume, but I'd love to be able to map the F10-12 keys to do that - without having to have iTunes active (playing, but not the active window).

I usually figure problems out myself but there are no system preferences that effect it. I even changed the voice in preferences as a test and it is still the same guy reading everything clicked in all applications except when I am in system preferences so far. Usually when I run into a dead end like this there is some mystery key command that works... anyone know?I also noticed that some of the top line (f) keys are not doing what they are supposed to any longer as well... volume up opens the window for expose & spaces it looks like and does not control the volume monitor brightness controls are not working either... I went to the key and mouse preferences and set the key strokes to default and still the same.
View 6 Replies View Related I have my imac apart right now and replaced the internal HD as it was not working. I assume the problem is the new one is not formatted with OSX, so from the INSTALL CD I opened the disk utility and see only one drive called "MEDIA".? Or is that just part of the install dvd that looks like a HD? In the system it shows as not formatted, 0 bytes. When selected in Partition it says :
"This voume is the startup volume and cannot be erased. Size 7.1 GB The disk is not writable and cannot be partitioned"
So i guess thats not my new HD I am seeing? Other than that there is only the two OSX install CD icons.
I was wondering if anyone knows how to do this- it is a pita to adjust separate volume controls on everything. If I adjust the volume on the keyboard, the volume slider in itunes doe snot move. If I set the volume on itunes with a mouse, then come home and use the volume controls on my keyboard, I have to also manually adjust the slider in itunes. Anyway to link the two?

I've reached a point where I cannot fit any more HDDs into my Mac Pro. The computer is packed to the gills.
The issue is the cabling is a mess and I can't even close the cover anymore. That's annoying as my apartment is dusty, so I have to clean it often.
I'm also trying to add one more drive, but I have no space.
I recently made a clone of my Windows XP Pro SP3 installation (its roughly about 14GB according to Finder/WinClone) so i made a 80GB partition on my 320GB drive and it gives me this error message:
the WinClone came from a 500GB internal drive and ive gotten winclone images to restore to a MBP before but not sure why its giving me this error code, anyway to restore the image to the new partition (which was created with Bootcamp) as i no longer have access to the old machine it was running on.
First some background info. I recently purchased a 1TB hard drive for my 13" MBP, and I am about to do a clean install of OSX 10.6 and Win7 64bit on separate partitions.
And I want to setup the partitions before I install using Disk Utility. The reason for this is because I'm under the assumption that when creating a NTFS partition its better for the disk to be blank so it can put the MFT(Master file table) and MFT Mirror wherever it wants instead of some random spot on the disk (that way disk writes will be faster). The MFT thing was true when converting a FAT32 disk to NTFS. Nativity formatted NTFS disks were always faster then ones converted from FAT32, because the MFT was spread out instead of at the start of the disk.
I'm worried that installing OSX and then using the bootcamp utility will cause the MFT on my NTFS partition to end up in a un-optimal place and disk Reads/Writes will be slower.
Ok, so here's my questions.
1.) Should I be using a GUID Partition Table or Master Boot Record(Remember OSX 10.6 and Win7)?
2.) Should I use Disk Utility to Create a the OSX partition and then leave the second partition as Free Space? / Or should I use a third party utility and make the OSX partition and the NTFS partition at the same time?
3.) If I do create the partitions Manualy, will bootcamp still work correctly?
4.) Should I Use Journaled or Case-Sensitive Journaled on my OSX partition?
I know all of the questions were stupid, but there isn't any info on the web about it.
It seems since I switched to Snow Leopard some applications can't print B/W anymore. These are apps like InDesign. Apps that use Color Management. I have played around with the settings but I haven't yet found a way to just print solid black text on my Brother laser printer. Everything comes out dithered.
Example:
I create a music sheet in Finale. Prints fine. Black Characters. Make eps, pdf or tiff files, import into InDesign for a book and InDesign will print the black fonts dithered. It does that to everything, imported or not.
If I print the PDFs that were created by Finale (which doesn't use color management) they print fine.
This dithering also happens when I turn color management off in InDesign. Consequently, when InDesign makes pdf files the solid black comes out as somewhat off black.
I have an old G4 mirror-door that I use as my PVR. It's stuffed with 4 big drives to record media, but it runs all day and sucks tons of power. Plus, it heats up the cabinet like an oven. Is there a piece of software etc. that can help the mac better manage its power consumption? I don't like using the OS X drive sleep option because the drives always go to sleep just when you need them..

files and folders are mixed together. I usually always right click and select keep arranged by "kind" to get this arranged by kind. But the problem is every time i exit the folder it reverts back to being mixed. Is there ANY way to save these changes to always have my files arranged by kind?
i have an unsual request. a developer mate of mine is forced to work on macs with his new job. he's only used windows before.
one of the windows features he heavily relies on is the "tile" view. this means that all windows are changed in shape (vertically/horizontally) to fill the screen. they can all be used (IT IS NOT EXPOSE).
I bought a relative a kindle and now have the job of loading it up etc, I have 2 questions really as i have not worked with pdf's much.
1) what is a good application or method of changing pdf meta-data etc
2) Is there a good PDF (and maybe other e-book formats) management software or even sync software for mac?

I have tons of movies, tv shows, and music videos, all in iTunes organized perfectly. I also have a bunch of random video clips (commercials, random stuff) that I don't want to put into any of the "placeholders" iTunes has for videos, because none of the placeholders are applicable to them. Is there any program that supports tagging, searching, etc for videos, similar to iTunes? Currently I have them all in folders, and it's getting out of control.
