OS X :: Unable To Shutdown - Freezes (Wheel On Bottom Spins Forever)
Dec 18, 2010
Sometimes, when I try to turn off my computer, it doesn't shut down. It would either quit all programs (including finder) and just show the wallpaper, or it would go to the blue-ish screen (a normal phase in the shutdown process) and the wheel on the bottom would spin forever. In either case, the computer just freezes at that point and I have to power cycle it manually.
I noticed that this occurs more frequently if I don't restart it for a couple of days (3-4 days max), but my friends are able to go on without a restart for 2-3 weeks at a time. I tried reinstalling OS X to no avail. I now also quit all my programs manually before I try to shutdown (don't know if they affect anything) but that does not appear to help. I'm using a late 2008 MBP with OS X 10.6.5 (10H574)

I have two user accounts. On my one account (the main one) Safari works fine but on the other account just today it started loading real slow. then once it finally pops up with the home apple screen and you click anything, the wheel spins and spins for like 3 min then safari quits unexpectedly. When i click to report to apple and then send it, again the wheel spins for a long time and then it says it was unable to send to apple please check internet connection and try again. But, there is nothing wrong with my internet connection because if i switch to my other account internet works just fine!

1: Just wiped drive and re-installed OS X Lion 10.7.3.
2: Upgrade iTunes from 10.5.2 to 10.5.3.
3: Restart, normally & fast.
4: Open iTunes.
5: Close iTunes.
6: Shutdown, and get the grey screen and spinning wheel...30min...1hr...2hr...I HAVE TO PRESS THE POWER BUTTON.
Why? Is it a bug in OS X Lion or iTunes 10.5.3?(mid 2010 MacBook Pro 371, OS X 10.7.3)

My early Intel iMac (2006) won't shut down - gray spinning wheel and blue screen for more than 2 hours now. Can I safely turn it off with the power button? (I'm a little paranoid after a bad experience doing that with my MacBook Pro).what I should I do then?

I upgraded to Snow Leopard and a few days later when i went to shutdown my mac pro after i woke it up, i got the blue screen and progress wheel just spinning. After calls with Apple, running both long and short hardware tests, 3 snow leopard discs, a clean install, 2 upgrades, the tech gave up. The clean install was a bare bones install with no applications installed. I would now have to take it into a repair shop and pay for software tests. This is a one year old mac pro with apple care. I used Time Machine to restore to leopard, and all is ok. Has anyone heard of this problem? I'm quit happy to stick with Leopard, but am upset that an apple software problem has to be fixed and paid for by me. I assume if it was a hardware problem it would show up in Leopard.

So my girlfriend boss wanted me to fix her computer. So I brought it home turned it on, and it didnt chime but it booted to the gray screen with apple logo/ slashed circle/and folder with a "?" So I made a USB Mac OS x bootable drive (FLASH) held down alt (try using a windows keyboard its fun) was able to select option and install a fresh copy. all seemed well was running really hot so I poped of the screen. HOLY MOLY! this thing is CAKED with dust, and I am not kidding it has literally piles of dust. So I ran updates, and did firmware updates. Turned it off for the night.
The next morning I went to radio shack and got Dust remove spray, opened it up made sure I was carful taking off the screen, and blew the sucker out. now its NICE and CLEAN. then i made sure I plugged everything in and turned it on. Drive spun like normal, Optical checked for a CD, and fans are also running normally. but no chime, no nothing stays as silent as normal but doesnt budge, it is like it hangs.

I have a Powerbook G4 17 that I have been working on. I recently replaced the screen and verified that it worked prior to buttoning it back up. When buttoning the powerbook back up, I nicked two wires with screws. One was part of the LCD wire that comes from the LCD itself. The second was the airport wire that is wrapped around the screen. I wrapped them back up with a cover and preceeded to get using my comp again. Once finally put back together, I could not get it to turn on.

I have a (big?) Problem with my Mac Mini Server (Mid 2011, Lion with all updates): It works all perfectly fine but in 10 til 50% of the shutdowns (depends on the weather i fear ) it will freeze at the gray screen with the spinning wheel for hours and longer. I have to use the power button to shut it down.
I had a look at the terminal serveral times and besides the last "shutdown: halt by...." there are always different entrys.

What does it mean when my 13" Macbook Pro pointer turns into a spinning color wheel after a web page loads, but freezes while this is happening? Every now and it does this for just a few seconds. At first I though maybe it lost my home Wifi signal, but it's showing 4 full bars.

Ive been getting this issue on my macbook quite frequently now; dont think its hardware related and occurs randomly at any time up to 3 times a day where the computer will slowly begin to freeze.
It (usually) begins by my browser not being able to access a website (just a white screen in browser section), at this point im able to alt tab between apps for some time but eventually everything will hard freeze, same with the cursor which will turn into a rainbow wheel and also eventually freeze.
Can only resolve this by power button for 6 secs (good thing it starts up in 5 seconds)

I have got a problem with my brand new Mac Pro. It randomly freezes at start-up and shutdown. I sometimes am able to work around the problem by turning on the monitors last or switching them off first but it does not always work and is a pain anyway. While waiting for Apple or another manufacturer to release a decently priced 4k display, I am using 2 HP 24' monitors inherited from my previous desktop.
One is connected via an HDMI cable (HP2405) and the other via a thunderbolt to HDMI cable with a DVI adapter (HP2448).Would I be better of using a Thunderbolt connection for both displays ? Or any other connection?

My Macbook with 4 gb RAM won't boot standard, safe, or Recovery.. All three results in grey screen with apple logo and spinning wheel which freezes after a few minutes. It also won't boot a bootable Mavericks usb with install package. I can boot single user mode and also view whats going on in verbose.. I am including a photo of where the script stops. PS: I've already tried resetting PRAM and the SMC has been reset as well.

I purchased the new 13-inch Macbook pro on the day of its launch and since the first 30 minutes of use it has constantly frozen intermidiatly for apperently no reason. I've tried re-installing the OS, taking it to the genius bar(They said everything looks ok and on the repair sheet it said "UNIT IS RFB"), and resetting the SMC. I checked the kernel log and it has a tendency to throw this: 7/4/12 12:02:42.000 AM kernel: Previous Shutdown Cause: 3. Read up on this and apperently it has to do with overheating issues, but this doesn't make sense condsidering it can happen even when just doing textbased web searching(I do not have adobe flash installed). I tried ressetting the SMC, changed nothing. Some days it may only happen once or twice, but sometimes it happens so frequently that the computer is barely usable. Apperently I am not the only one having this problem, some people are reporting the same thing but claiming it to be a problem with the Intel 4000 graphics card. The model is the baseline 13-inch Macbook pro running OSX 10.7.4.

I have 2 MBP's, a Mac Pro, and a Mac Mini. On all of these I use a Logitech Trackman Wheel with. I updated the first 3 machines to Snow Leopard and the Logitech Trackman Wheel continued to work fine. I then upgraded the last MBP to Snow Leopard. For some reason the scroll wheel no longer works on the Logitech Trackman Wheel. I am able to use the ball to move around the screen, the buttons still work, but the scroll wheel won't work.

I can't believe I'm even posting this question. I just opened iTunes and the window is so big the bottom is cut off so I can't resize the window from the bottom right-hand corner. Clicking the minus just gives me the player controls and "x" of course closes it. The "+" gives me just the player controls. I just want to resize the window so it's say, 1/4 my screen. How do I resize the window when I can't see the bottom corner?
