OS X Mavericks :: MacbBook Pro Frequent Hard Freezes With Rainbow Wheel
Jun 23, 2014
Ive been getting this issue on my macbook quite frequently now; dont think its hardware related and occurs randomly at any time up to 3 times a day where the computer will slowly begin to freeze.
It (usually) begins by my browser not being able to access a website (just a white screen in browser section), at this point im able to alt tab between apps for some time but eventually everything will hard freeze, same with the cursor which will turn into a rainbow wheel and also eventually freeze.
Can only resolve this by power button for 6 secs (good thing it starts up in 5 seconds)

Why my safari freezing on me daily? I am often opening new tabs and viewing 4 or 5 pages at once, and while they are loading it seems to be stuck on the annoying spinning rainbow wheel, ultimately leading me to end the program for not responding.

I have a brand new macbook pro, and whenever I use itunes, iphoto or firefox. I get the spinning "wheel of doom" about every ten minutes. It only lasts about 30 seconds, but happens even when I only have one application open.

I got my mac the summer of 2007. Recently I have been having a problem with the rainbow wheel frequently coming up every few minutes. Sometimes it goes away and others I have to restart my computer completely. My computer has also been running slower lately than usual. I don't know if the 2 have any correlation with each other or not. I did the disk repair it utilities, and also the thing with running the test with the disk, and it didn't seem to help, maybe I didn't complete them or something, I'm not sure.

I'm using a Macbook Pro. I keep getting the rainbow wheel (2-3 times in 5 minutes) even using the simplest apps like safari or even just doing the the right-click. I have reformatted 2x and with a clean computer, I still get this problem. Sometimes the wheel goes away after about 15-30 seconds, sometimes my macbook pro just hangs and I have to manually reboot it. I have been to an authorized apple service center and they have told me there is no issue with the hard-disk, so I'm quite confused. I also noticed when I first got this issue, my spotlight was indexing. And when I finish reformatting it, it indexed again. But my primary problem lasted beyond this indexing.

Well I had my first lockup today... i was in finder looking at some files on a external drive and then i just got the rainbow wheel. i let it set there for about 15 minutes no luck, then i manually stopped finder. After that nothing seemed to work right until I rebooted.Oh well that the first one since I got the thing...... Windows would have locked up 10 times over by now.

I am using FCP 6.06, I imported video from two different video camcorders: Canon GL-2 mini-dv and a Sony Digital 8 TRV340. Importing from both of these cameras went pretty well, i had some dropped frames while importing, nonetheless it went pretty well. However, when i drop any of the footage into the timeline and I press play, it will play for a few seconds, hang up (spinning wheel) and then gives me a window that says: RT extreme has determined that these were caused by slow disks, please try: Increasing the speed of your disks, Decreasing the number of RT layers, Limiting your RT bandwith. AS of now i currently use a 1 TB Western Digital "My Book" for my scratch disk. I have tried everything I can think of and I am working on a Wedding video.

I have 512 mb of RAM on my ibook G4. Lately something is eating it up. I looked on the Activity Monitor and couldn't see anything different. Now when I open more than one page on a website, the RAM goes down to about 29 mb. and then the site freezes with the little rainbow pinwheel spinning. I can't get it to stop with the Apple/period technique.
Also, I have over 3 gigs of virtual memory but it's looks like it's not being tapped into so that I don't run out of RAM.

I replaced my hard drive at the weekend in a mid 2010 MacBook Pro with a Samsung/Seagate 1TB 2.5 inch 5400RPM SATA II Hard Disk Drive. The install of the hardware went fine, and the computer recognised it no problem. I went through the process of formatting which again went ok, then I moved on to the restore of the old image from my time machine.
After the 4 hours or so it said restore successful and a restart was required - after the restart I am presented with the apple logo and spinning wheel and can make no progress beyond this point.
I have tried 3 restores now - all of which were 'successful' and have the same issue. I have checked the disk using the repair tool and there are no recoded issues so I'm at a loss.

New Mac Mini 2009, Apps, user and settings imported from a G4 Cube running Leopard perfectly. When I go to System Prefs - Accounts - Guest and I mark the checkbox "Allow Guests connect to this computer" System Prefs freezes with rainbow pizza. Then, no matter if I kill the application or not, the system is death. If I launch new apps from the dock, they bounce a four five times and then stop but the applications don't launch. Not even I can restart. When all the applications closes the system starts a loop of spinning clock wheel - blue screen - clock wheel - blue screen forever.
This is the second new Mac that has the same exact problem after importing all my data, and it's 100% reproducible. I returned the first one to Apple cause I thought it was a hardware failure. What I have done?
Repair permissions and diks
Reinstall the system

For a few days now, my 13" MBP (purchased in August; painfully clean-install upgraded to Snow Leopard in October) has been freezing into spinning wheel mode randomly every few minutes. It would seem that this happens particularly often in web browsers (but also when no browsers are operating and I'm typing away in Text Edit or chatting in Adium and Skype). When the browsers are on, the FlashPlayer would occasionally crash. No matter what app froze first, whatever else I click on also freezes.
The freezes happen most frequently after the computer has been to sleep and woken up by opening the lid. The wheels go spinning for up to two minutes, and then everything goes back to normal (for up to 3 mins before freezing again). The longer the comp operates after that, the rarer they become, and after a few hours they rarely happen at all (then again, some times they do anyway). On some occasions, everything freezes so badly I need to hard-reset, and then it takes the comp upwards of 15 minutes to reboot - and then everything keeps freezing, of course. Contrary to other reports of similar problems here, no CPU jumps appear to be happening during the freeze. I tried:
- Running Disk Utility after booting from Snow Leopard . Some permissions (which in forums here were referred to as inconsequential / not related to freezes) were repaired; HD in general "seems to be ok."
- Running RAM tests (with Rember, supposedly updated to Snow Leopard). Everything seemed fine
- Getting rid of the ARD agent (which was related to some of the permissions mentioned earlier)
- Stopping Bluetooth (as someone here with a similar problem thought it helped)
- Installing the Beta Adobe Flash Reader (same as above)
Nothing helped. I really don't want to take it to the lab; I live in Israel and the comp was purchased in the States, which means that the only licensed lab here reserves the right to keep the comp for up to 26 working days

I have an older iMac, 2006 white version, running leopard. I am one of the many people who experience semi-frequent freezes which forces me to manually power the machine down. After much research it seems everyone has diagnosed the problem has hardware, specifically the graphics card running hot. I installed smcFancontrol and have ran it for four to five months. Since then I have experienced maybe 4 or 5 freezes, but the freeze occurs while doing nothing "heavy", just browsing in safari or chrome. Has there been any updated or new information concerning this problem? I have scanned the web a little and can't really find anything really recent. The most recent article/discussion i have found is roughly a year old.

Note: I've tried safe mode, and I don't have this problem there. But when I'm in safe mode, I can't get to the internet, so it's useless.I have an ibook g3. I don't know the exact kind, but it has dual usb ports and a translucent keyboard.
I know my g3 is old, but it works just fine. I can start up, log in, and my desktop will come up just fine. I can run any of the applications I have installed. I can get on the internet. I can do pretty much anything... for ten minutes.
After being on my g3 for a little while, it starts to go slower and slower and slower until I get the little rainbow pinwheel thing and it freezes up. Then I have to turn it off by force. BTW, when all of this starts, it doesn't really heat up or make any odd noises.

I use Mail on 10.9.3 with multiple IMAP accounts (but almost nothing the servers, all local in many folders). In the last days Mail started to crash several times a day, mostly when I interact with messages (replies, moving to folders, attachment stuff etc.) I am too fast for Mail - but that never was the case before and I have a fast machine and Internet connection.

I DREAD having to restart my Mac. Because every time I get met by a Time Machine 'unable to write' fault. And you can't reformat the disc (can't unmount) with disc utility. (even unmounting with Terminal, and stopping indexing with Terminal, both of which fail)
The only way is to plug the Time Machine disc into a Windows PC and reformat with that.

What does it mean when my 13" Macbook Pro pointer turns into a spinning color wheel after a web page loads, but freezes while this is happening? Every now and it does this for just a few seconds. At first I though maybe it lost my home Wifi signal, but it's showing 4 full bars.

Sometimes, when I try to turn off my computer, it doesn't shut down. It would either quit all programs (including finder) and just show the wallpaper, or it would go to the blue-ish screen (a normal phase in the shutdown process) and the wheel on the bottom would spin forever. In either case, the computer just freezes at that point and I have to power cycle it manually.
I noticed that this occurs more frequently if I don't restart it for a couple of days (3-4 days max), but my friends are able to go on without a restart for 2-3 weeks at a time. I tried reinstalling OS X to no avail. I now also quit all my programs manually before I try to shutdown (don't know if they affect anything) but that does not appear to help. I'm using a late 2008 MBP with OS X 10.6.5 (10H574)

I have a Macbook Pro that's about two years and 4 months old, running the latest version of Leopard. I was problem free for about two years until last October when my MBP suddenly wouldn't boot up (hung at the grey apple screen). I took it to my University's computer repair center, and they said either there was a corrupt OS file, or my HDD was going bad. I went home and booted from my OSX disc and did a full erase and install. My computer worked fine for a few months following the erase and install
