OS X :: USB Boot Unable To Show Hard Disk

Jan 3, 2011

I've created a Snow Leopard boot disk using this method link. I created it on a 16GB CF Disk. I've tried it twice. First time I formatted the disk as eXfat with 1 partition. Next time I used Mac OS Extended for a 7Gig partition and fat32 for the rest.

Upon boot I get the normal install stuff like I do with the DVD, but then no hard disk shows up. I thought it was because of the eXfat which is why I tried again. I looked into the system profiler and I can see my seagate hard disk, but under disk utility it doesn't exist. My Sata DVD drive shows up though. If I boot off of the DVD I can see and install to my hard disk.

I'm trying to make a USB Disk because I'm planning on getting a SSD and I will be removing the Dvd drive.

This is a Mid 2009 Macbook.

OS X :: Unable;e To Boot From Internal Hard Drive / Use Disk Warrior To Repair Disk?

Apr 11, 2010

I am considering purchasing diskwarrior but want to make sure it can help my situation before I purchase it. My imac will not boot from the internal hard drive (Intel processor) When I use disk utility to try and repair the disk, I get error messages and it won't repair. I can see the HD but cannot repair it. When I connect using target mode with my mac book pro, the hard drive does not appear on my host (macbook pro) computer. I have reloaded OS X (Leopard) onto a firewire external drive and can boot my imac that way but I can not find my original internal Macintosh HD. Will disk warrior be able to help with this scenario. I would really like to access that internal Macintosh HD and retrieve my files.

MacBook :: Replacing Hard Drive - Nothing Show Up In Disk Utility

Aug 31, 2010

The HDD in my wife's black MacBook (2007, I think) won't boot up. I've run Disk Utility and have decided it's pretty much dead. I have a Carbon Copy backup, so the data is fine. I've tried replacing the drive twice now, and the MacBook simply won't "see" the new drives. When I install the drive, nothing shows up in Disk Utility (run either from the install disc or the Carbon Copy backup drive in a USB enclosure).

The new drives are formatted (I even copied the bootable backup to one of them), and the computer sees them just fine if I install them in a USB enclosure and hook them up that way. When I put them in the computer, though, no dice. Her old, corrupted HDD still showed up in Disk Utility when I reinstalled it, but the new drives don't.

OS X :: Unable To Boot From Disk

Sep 23, 2010

So I have been running into a bunch of weird issues lately (got errors on emptying the trash, FCP is acting all crashy, couldn't unmount an internal disk to format it, etc) so I wanted to run the hardware test that is on the installer disk that came with my MP. Problem is, the machine won't boot from the disk. If I boot holding down the D key it boots to a grey screen and a dialog box pops up for a second and then *poof* the computer shuts down. It happens so quick there is literally no chance to read what it says. If I boot holding down option and try to click the install disk I immediately hang, the mouse doesn't respond anymore and I'm screwed and need to hard restart.

So I figured "hey I got a backup, I'll just reinstall OS X". Nope, still won't boot using the "install Mac OS X" from the disk. I click restart and I just get a grey screen again and nothing happens. I hear the drive spin up and then spin down and silence. Everything is disconnected from the computer except for my screen my keyboard and mouse.

Everything is up to date. Zapped pram, repaired permission and ran cron scripts via Onyx so I am at a loss what to do now. This is troubling because even if I have a problem I have no way of reinstalling the OS. I can work because the computer is working almost normally but this worries me.

This is a new MP 2.8.

Everything has been working tip top until this morning.

EDIT - I bought SL for my MBP so I have the retail disk. I was able to boot from that but it doesn't have the hardware test so it still looks like I am SOL for now.

IMac Intel :: Lacie External Hard Drive Doesn't Show Up - Sporadically Appears In Disk

Odd stufff, I have a 500 gig Lacie ext HD that my user uses on her Vista machine...

I am setting up a replacement for the Vi$ta machine, which is a 24 inch imac.

I plugged in the ext HD and nothing happened after I powered on the ext HD.

I checked disk utility and it showed up but as a 2TB size ext HD...

I unplugged the Lacie and plugged it back in and all the info showed up correctly.

But ALL the buttons under "First Aid" are greyed out so I cant verify permissions, disk, or repair disk or permissions.

OS X :: New MBP I5 Does Not Boot After Hard Disk Swap?

Apr 24, 2010

I received my new i5 MBP today. After booting it once with the installed HDD to check if it's ok, I exchanged the hard disk for the one in my Late 2008 Macbook Pro. After doing this, my Late 2008 Macbook Pro boots fine with the (new) hard disk from the new i5 MBP, but the i5 MBP does not boot with my old hard disk.

To give you some details:

- I have installed 10.6.3 on the (old) hard disk that's not booting.

- The i5 MBP boots fine from the installation DVD

- Disk utility finds and can read my hard disk, no errors

- PRAM NVRAM reset did not help

- when booting in safe mode, I can see the system stop booting after or while loading Extensions.mkext

My guess is, it tries to boot and load the wrong Extensions for the new system (CPU? GPU?). I have no idea how to fix this.

Solution: Re-install Mac OS X from the installation DVD that came with the i5 on top of the existing (old) system. This takes around 45min. and leaves your data intact, but adds the Core i5/i7 support.

Intel Mac :: Won't Boot From Hard Drive Or Disk?

Apr 1, 2012

Gray screen and 'prohibited' logo appeared today without apparent reason.Forced a power down by holding power button. Restarted....eventually reached user login screen but froze again on login attempt after password entered.

Restrated again by forced power down but only got gray screen and spinning gear.

Have now spent many hours going through most conceivable options including...

following instructions on http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570 re gray screen troubleshooting

have disconnected peripherals; reset smu, smc, and pram;

safe boot w shift key did nothing;

safe boot shift+v produced a screen of text that got as far as com.apple.launchd 1

but then several lines of text appeared repeating twice eaxctly same, each headed by disk0s2: I/O error. with [ErrNo 5], then

dyld: Library not loaded:   and Reason: no suitable image found

final line ends with The System bootstrapper has crashed: Trace/BPT trap:5

I have tried installing from the original install disk several times but holding C key or Option/Alt key or D key gets no response and I cannot get the install disk to eject either holding down mouse button, eject button

I haven't done any recent upgrades or installed new software, no new peripherals attached.

Is this a dead hard drive or does someone have other suggestions that might work?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Macbook Cannot Boot: Hard-disk Repair / Restore Error

Apr 8, 2012

My MacBook is unable to boot. Whenever I try to boot, the spinning circle and the progress bar appears on the grey screen, but when the progress bar reaches about 40%, the computer shuts itself down. I started in Verbose Mode and tried AppleJack, and it said my harddisk needs to be repaired; but AppleJack is unable to do that. (Error Messages: "Invalid node structure" and "Incorrect number of thread records) I then tried to startup with both Recovery HD and Mac OS X Install DVD and ran the Disk Utility on both of the startups. At the First Aid tab, I selected my Hard Drive (not the Hitachi one, the Macintosh HD one) and clicked on Repair Disk. The error messages I got from Repair Disk were:Invalid volume file countInvalid node structureThe volume Macintosh HD could not be verified completely.

Error: Disk Utility can't repair this disk..disk, and restore your backed-up files. And, lastly, the following popup message appeared:Disk Utility stopped repairing "Macintosh HD"Disk Utility can't repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files. Not being sure how to back-up my files using Disk Utility, I plugged in an external HDD to my USB port and clicked on the Restore tab in the Disk Utility. As the Source, I selected Macintosh HD and as the Destination, I selected one of the partitions I created on my external HDD. However, when I clicked on Restore, I got the following error message:Restore FailureCould not restore - Input/output error I partitioned my external HDD by creating 2 partitions formatted in Mac OS Extended Journal - GPT. Now, what can I do to save my files (and my MacBook's HardDisk)?

OS X :: Unable To Partition My Current Hard Disk

I am trying to partition my current HardDrive so I can run a Macintosh on half of it. The other half will of coarse be windows. I've tried programs like BasiliskII and SoftMac, neither work.

I grabbed some spare 10.4 disks I had, and my computer refused to read them. So I got my hands on a different set of 10.4 install disks and my computer still refused to read them.

I am trying to do this because it's a project for my Computer Hardware class. I've spent way too much time on this without any progress.

OS X :: Unable To Partition External Hard Disk - How To Fix It

Sep 28, 2009

My intention is to partition an external HD in half allowing it to serve as a backup for a pc running windows xp, and the other half as a backup for a mac(10.5. I am using a Seagate external HD(new) that was initially partitioned on a windows xp computer.

The 1st half of the 1TB HD was formatted in NTFS format, and the second half was erased and (I thought) reformatted in HFS plus but when I attempt to use CCC(Carbon Copy) to copy the mac 1/2 of the hard drive, I get this message:

"You may have difficulty booting from this target volume, the underlying disk is not formatted with a partitioning scheme that Apple recommends for Intel Macs."

I have read the recommendations that the external HD need to be partitioned with APM or GPT, but I cannot seem to get to that option now for the mac side of the external HD.

In the Disk Utility, the external HD shows both sections of the partitioned drive(the xp section and the leopard). I do not want to reformat the entire drive(both sections) if at all possible.

I just want the Mac side of the ext drive to be properly prepared for CCC, and the windows side to remain as is.

MacBook Pro :: Unable To Boot Off External Hard Drive?

May 4, 2012

Two years ago I installed Leopard on a pair of striped Fantom Hard Drives (3TBs) via Firewire 800, and have been running my 2007 Macbook Pro off it ever since. When Snow Leopard came out, I updated it with no problems. When Lion came out, again no problems. Last month I bought a CalDigit VR2 with dual hard drives (4TBs) specifically built for running OS externally. But no matter how I configure, install, or connect... it will not boot up my Macbook Pro, or my Macbook Air.

Last week I bought a new Fantom external hard drive (1.5TBs) and discovered the same exact issue, with one exception... the Fantom will boot the Macbook Pro via USB 2.0, but only when plugged into the left side port.

Has anyone else noticed this change?

P.S. I've talked to the people at CalDigit, Fantom, and Apple, and no one seems to have an answer.

I'm using a macbook and would like to copy over several games over to my friend's external harddrive. The files are rather large -8gigs, 6gigs, 4gigs.

For some reason it wont allow me to copy the files to the HD. only prompting me with the message "the operation can't be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code 0)".

I presume that it's formatted correctly because I was able to copy a smaller file (363megs) without any troubles. However, whenever it involves these large torrents it prompts me with that same message.

IMac :: Unable To Access Hard Drive / Disk Is Unreadable

Sep 14, 2009

Okay. So I had an Imac G5 (white) running 10.4 This one crashed and I got a new iMac G5 (Silver). Since then I have removed the old hard drive. Today I connected it to a Serial ATA - USB Converter. It powers up and sounds to be working fine (hums, spinning) but my new computer says "Disk is unreadable". It gives me the option to format, but I want to recover my old files first.

Important: I also have a similar Lacie external drive that I hooked up the same way and it worked fine. I was able to take the files off of it.

My guess: I believe when the drive is connected, it is trying to start up the OS (this was the start up disc). It has that click sound like it's trying to make the chime and then spinning like it's working. Can you change the drive to a "Slave"? Or is my disc corrupted?
