How do you get the install destination hard disk to show up when re-installing the operating system? I'm trying to re-install my OS and can't get past this step because the destination disk does not show.

Alright, so my hard drive died a week ago and I bought a new one. I am positive that I have installed it correctly. But when I run the install discs, after I choose english as the language, it says "Mac OS X cannot be installed on this computer". I am using the install discs that my macbook came with. I have tried following many online tutorials that involve partitioning and formatting but I can't seem to get it to work.

When installing operating system from original osx two-disc set, the box which asks to choose which destination to install to is blank, and does not show any icon onto which to choose. Is this is defect in the disc? The computer recognizes that there is a new harddrive, so I know I installed it properly.

I have an old Macbook via 2007 and I'm trying to update my operating system (currently OS 10.5.8) to Snow Leopard, but the disk is not reading in the disk drive. And unfortunately, Snow Leopard is only on a DVD, it can't be downloaded.I figure I have 2 choices:
1) take it in and spend $49 to have them do diagnostics and then tell me they probably need to replace the superdrive
2) I could buy an external optical drive. But I would need to know which one would be compatable with my old *** Macbook.

I recently upgraded my Macbook Pro to Snow leopard. About 4 days later, my Mac crashed. When I tried to restart, it came up with the grey screen with apple logo and spinning disc. I have tried all of the resets. I then decided to try and re-boot from the SL install disk. When it asked me to choose a destination volume, however, there was none available. I tried disk utility, but there was no disk available there either. I then went back and tried to use the original install disc that came with the Mac...same results. It appears that my internal hard disk has disappeared. I wonder if i am going to have to replace the hard drive?

View 2 Replies View RelatedThe HDD in my wife's black MacBook (2007, I think) won't boot up. I've run Disk Utility and have decided it's pretty much dead. I have a Carbon Copy backup, so the data is fine. I've tried replacing the drive twice now, and the MacBook simply won't "see" the new drives. When I install the drive, nothing shows up in Disk Utility (run either from the install disc or the Carbon Copy backup drive in a USB enclosure).
The new drives are formatted (I even copied the bootable backup to one of them), and the computer sees them just fine if I install them in a USB enclosure and hook them up that way. When I put them in the computer, though, no dice. Her old, corrupted HDD still showed up in Disk Utility when I reinstalled it, but the new drives don't.
When I tell Image Capture to save a scan in a particular folder, it doesn't show up there in the Finder. This is a fairly new trick. Sometimes after considerable fiddling, they will suddenly be there.
If I go into Photoshop or Word and search for the files, both Photoshop and Microsoft Word can see the files in the correct folder. The Finder just can't see them.
I'm trying to install OS X Lion from my external hard drive but when it gets to the point where you have to choose the hard drive it's going to be installed on, my MBP hard drive doesn't pop up. Only the external hard drive.

View 24 Replies View RelatedI've created a Snow Leopard boot disk using this method link. I created it on a 16GB CF Disk. I've tried it twice. First time I formatted the disk as eXfat with 1 partition. Next time I used Mac OS Extended for a 7Gig partition and fat32 for the rest.
Upon boot I get the normal install stuff like I do with the DVD, but then no hard disk shows up. I thought it was because of the eXfat which is why I tried again. I looked into the system profiler and I can see my seagate hard disk, but under disk utility it doesn't exist. My Sata DVD drive shows up though. If I boot off of the DVD I can see and install to my hard disk.
I'm trying to make a USB Disk because I'm planning on getting a SSD and I will be removing the Dvd drive.
This is a Mid 2009 Macbook.
I was trying to boot into Vista using the System Preferences "Startup Disk" pane , but it doesn't show the Vista Partition. I only can see network (doesn't work) and Mac Os. If I use option key during boot it does work normally.

Moving on now to install Leopard (I tried Tiger too), when I get to "Select Destination to install Mac OS X", my hard drive won't show up at all. I have a MacBook Pro which was originally supplied with OS X10.4.9. I have upgraded using disks purchased from the Apple store to 10.5 and subsequently 10.6. More recently I upgraded to 10.7 using the download from the online App Store. I would like to perform an Erase and Install to get rid of the 'dross' on my hard disk and may do this as part of the 10.8 upgrade although have yet decide whether to wait for this or not.
when doing the erase and install, do I have to start from scratch by loading the original 10.4.9 OS X version or can I start at 10.7. If the latter how would I do this given that I don't have a disk as it was downloaded from the App Store?
