OS X :: Time Machine Causing Kernel Panic

Jun 1, 2008

Time Machine was doing its normal hourly backup when all of a sudden I got the multi-language gray shade of death. I restarted and tried to backup again, which resulted in another kernel panic. This time I tried entering Time Machine, and in the middle of "Connecting to Backup Volume," I get another kernel panic. This has never happened before I updated to 10.5.3, but I've had several backups since updating and this hasn't happened before just now, so I'm not sure it's a 10.5.3 issue.

[Log] ...

I have Time Machine pointed at a Time Capsule and I'm on the MacBook listed in my signature. I turned off Time Machine until I can figure this out.

Intel Mac :: PeerGuardian Appears To Be Causing Kernel Panic?

Jun 25, 2012

PeerGuardian appears to be causing kernel panic and my iMac to continuously srash, and yet I cannot find it to uninstall - Spotlight yields no results at all, and I have removed it from login items under System Preferences / Accounts. I want to remove PeerGuardian completely to see if this resolves the kernel panic but don't see (a) how I can, given that I can't find it anywhere and/or (b) how it can be causing a kernel panic if I can't find it anywhere!

MacBook Pro :: Kernel Panic - Way To Transferred Old Files With Time Machine?

Nov 28, 2009

I just received a replacement computer for a defective machine. Its a brand new macbook pro. I transferred old files with time machine only to have the new machine resume a series of kernel panics that caused the replacement. The Genius Bar asked me to reload everything from scratch so as not to transfer corrupt files. I did so -- with the most up to date dmg files out there, and 4 days later had another kernel panic. I do not know what it means but have pasted it below.

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Kernel Panic While Trying To Backup With Time Machine

May 29, 2012

Over the weekend I tried to backup my MacBook Pro onto an external harddrive, and when about 23Gb out of 110Gb were completed, my mac went into a kernel panic ("You need to restart your computer. hold down the power button until it turns off, then press the power button again." in four languages). Previous backups went fine. So I did a reformat of the ext. hdd, same thing: after about 20 or so Gb of backup, the msg. pops. otherwise the mac runs without problems. Did a virus check, which came up negative.

Mac Pro :: Two Kernel Panic On New Machine

I've had two of these in less than 24 hours on this new machine. I was able to work in Photoshop and Aperture fine, but the minute I started watching Hulu videos I started getting these. Oddly enough. I zapped PRAM and repaired permissions, and haven't had another one yet... but should I just take it back now while I'm still in my 14 days?

Mac Pro :: Hardware Test Okay And Machine Still Get Kernel Panic?

Jul 29, 2008

I have a 2.8 Octo Mac Pro, Early 2008 with the ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT graphics, 6 GB Ram, 4 of which are from OWC. I have a Cintiq 20WSX hooked up to it doing animation with Adobe Flash CS3. Since I upgraded the software to 10.5.3, and now 10.5.4, I've been having some kernel panics. Some of the crashes where attributed to the Wacom Tablet Driver and I've been exchanging emails back and forth with Wacom Support and their latest release of the driver seems to solve some of the problems. Now, it's the intermittent kernel panics that's causing me issues. I would get the gray curtain of death every other day.

I have been doing some process of elimination by removing the Cintiq from the Mac Pro and hooking it up with my iMac. The Cintiq runs great on the iMac and I have yet to get a kernel panic. Which led me to suspect that maybe it's in the RAM of my Mac Pro that is causing the problem, or maybe something else I know not of. Other than the mouse, monitor and keyboard, I only have the Cintiq as the external peripheral hooked up to the Mac Pro when these kernel panics occur. Both Mac Pro and iMac are on 10.5.4. Both have Flash CS3 and the latest tablet driver installed.

Actually, other than Flash CS3 I do not have any other 3rd party up running on the Mac Pro. I've been running the Apple Hardware Test and have it on loop for 21 hours straight now, 14 passes so far. There's no report yet of anything. My question is, what should I do after should the Apple Hardware Test reveals nothing wrong? Is there any other way to find out what's been causing those intermittent kernel panics that I have been having with the MacPro and the Cintiq? Do I let it run (the Apple Hardware Test) a lot longer to see if anything will come up?

OS X :: Kernel Panic Every Time I Plug In External Drive?

Jan 17, 2009

I'm getting kernel panics every time I plug in an external drive. This is happening on a MacBook Pro as well as on a Mac Mini (G4). Both are running 10.5.6.

The drive is one of the Seagate Barracuda 1.5 TB drives that are having all sorts of other problems. I have it in a CoolMax USB 2.0 enclosure (this one: [URL] I've been using this setup for a couple of weeks and didn't have any problems until this morning when I consistently get this kernel panic.

Obviously I can't run Disk Utility on it, unless there's a way to plug it in without it automounting. I could boot my MBP to XP, but the drive has two partitions and both are HFS+. Ideally I would like to preserve the data on the drive. They're only backups, but I don't have access to the originals at the moment, as my main machine is out of commission. Lots of hardware problems lately.

Any ideas?

Applications :: Time Machine Causing External HD?

Feb 17, 2010

I have two Macs both of which are running snow Leopard. To back these up I use time machine connected to a single external USB hard drive. I simply connect the drive to the machine I want to backup once a week or so and it will back up. For a while, everything worked just fine, I even needed to recover files from it and did so successfully. Occasionally one or other of the Macs would take a while to recognise the drive but normally it would be OK. Gradually the problem got worse until neither machine would recognise the backup drive. I mean nothing - not only would it not mount on either machine but wasn't recognised in disk utility either. As the disk was about 3 years old I figured it was probably the drive on the way out so bought a new Seagate drive to replace it.

Again, it worked fine to start with, but now after only about two months exactly the same problem has occurred and now the new drive is not recognised at all either. Now it could be that I'm just unlucky and have two dead hard drives but I don't think so, especially as the new drive has had very little use. I'm guessing that somehow using the backup drive with more than one machine has caused the problem but I don't know how to fix it. I have tried everything my (limited) knowledge will allow.

- Repairing disk permissions
- Allow OSX time to find the drive (I've left it for hours but to no avail)
- Booting the machine up with the usb drive already plugged in

As the drives are not recognised by either machine at all, I don't know what else to do. If I could see the drives I'd be happy to format them both and use one on each machine if this would fix the problem but I can't even do that.

MacBook :: Connecting To LCD TV Causing Kernel Panics

Feb 26, 2012

MacBook 2.1
Intel Core 2 Duo
OSx 10.6.8 Snow Leopard

I've had my MacBook for almost 5 years, first Mac I ever purchased, and have told everybody since then how I've never had one single problem with it, virus, or anything. My desktop PC would crash about every 6 months prior to getting my MacBook & the employee at Best Buy talked me into getting a Mac. I've been extremely satisfied in every way with it until now.

I finally bought a mini-dvi to hdmi cord to hook up my 70' Sony Bravia as a secondary display, but ever since hooking it up I'm getting constant kernel panics where I'm forced to restart my computer. This happens atleast 10 times a day and sometimes as much as every 10 minutes. It's not the TV as I have the same problem connecting to my 44' Philips TV. Am I just constrained to only using the Macbook screen connected to my laptop?

OS X :: Won't Work With Kernel / Backup With Time Machine

Sep 14, 2009

I've installed SL on my Mac Pro from scratch (Clean Install). Then I created my first backup with Time Machine. (550GB) After two weeks, I found out that I could boot my machine into the 64 bits kernel. So I did. I booted with the 6 + 4 keys during startup and I've checked and I was using the 64bits kernel. Then I week later without adding no new data, I caught a time machine backup with over 350GB backup. (Which match the data on my third hard drive.)

I was wondering if by changing the kernel did Time Machine "thinks" that it is a new backup a take some files from my drives protected by the backup.

Safari :: Its Causing Kernel Panics And Random Shutdowns And Overheating?

May 11, 2012

However Safari is causing all kinds of hangs restarts kernal panics overheating with my machine and yet if I use google chrome for the exact same web sites these same problems are not present.  I much prefer to be able to keep using safari and I realise that I haev not got the most up to date software since Lion is not supported on my machine but it is as up todate as snow leaopard allows.

I also realize that a more than 5 year old machine is doing very well especially since it is rarely off. It has outlasted 2 timecapsules and countless airport express but the anomyly between 2 browsers is weird. I doubt this has a solution but maybe the odd apple tech who read this might find it a challenge to know why one browser causes heart issues but another doesn't.

OS X :: Kernel Panic Using Monitor's Usb Hub?

I recently got a Dell 2209WA with built in USB hub. and great i thought, i can manage the USB ports on my macbook a bit more effectively. But it seems when i pull the USB cable when i want to go portable, it gets a KP, at the moment i suspect it has something to do with the logitech wireless adaptor i have plugged into the monitor. it exhibits these issues when the monitor is turned off as well.

I have another USB hub, but i pretty much use it exclusively for my external hard drives (i don't really like to keep it plugged in all the time, if powered up for some reason the drives spin up in the middle of the night even when the macbook is sleeping) and it does nothing like this when the adaptor is plugged into that.

OS X :: 10.5 - Cannot Restart After Kernel Panic

May 3, 2009

Happy for my macbook pro for almost two years. Lately it's been unstable and freezes sometimes. Two days ago it went to kernal panic and shows kernal panic screen and asks for restart everytime it restarts. It won't start on DVD or safe mode (it just hangs there and keeps spinning). For single user mode, it first worked and I was able to remove login items, but it froze again and now generates the following panic log. All the hardware have been the same and I have installed vpn a few months ago and dropbox last week.

OS X :: Macbook Kernel Panic 10.5.8?

Nov 29, 2009

I did a quick search through the forum and didn't see anything specific about this problem. It just started to occur yesterday and nothing has changed on the computer. (Nothing new installed and no external hardware plugged in.)

Basically, it just pops up with the grey screen advising to restart. Sometimes it occurs after waking from sleep, sometimes it occurs after starting up, and sometimes it occurs in the middle of a task. I haven't noticed a specific pattern.

I ran the AHT and everything passed. I also ran Rember and the memory seemed fine in the test. I reset the PRAM and VRAM and the SMC after speaking with Apple. Finally, I reinstalled the OSX clean on the machine and the panics are still occurring.

This is the last panic report from the Macbook 1,1 2.0 with 1.25 GB RAM. I'm hoping it is the RAM and not something with the logic board, but am not sure if that can be ascertained without finding replacement RAM first.
