OS X :: System Clock Messed Up/shuts Down On Its Own?

Feb 25, 2009

I have a 3 year old Powerbook G4. I just recently replaced the battery (with an Apple one).

Starting last week I keep getting the "the system clock is set before March 21, 2001" message every time I start the computer up.

I am also having a problem where...when I close my computer (still on) it'll shut down completely (after a bit of time). If the computer is open and the battery runs out, it'll also shut down.

What's going on?

Is this all related to the PRAM?

OS X :: System Messed Up Fonts

Sep 27, 2009

I installed a load of new fonts, but unfortunately a lot of them were corrupt, so I had loads of crashes and hangs.I used Font Book to validate all my fonts, but when I clicked the remove button FB always crashed (due to a corrupt font, no doubt...).I tried FontDoctor, which claimed to have sorted out all my problems, but although things had improved FB still reported over 2,000 minor errors.

Mac Pro :: Under Desk - Overheating - System Shuts Down

Aug 10, 2010

So I am about to order a 2010 Mac Pro. I am looking for opinions from users who own or have owned any recent model (last 2 years) Mac Pro in terms of how much heat they throw off and how much open air space they need. The reason I ask is my custom desk at home has one of those wooden "compartments" that a tower or workstation computer can slide into. If I put the Mac Pro in there, it will be exposed on the front, but the top and all sides will be surrounded. I am sure you have all seen the type of desk slot I am talking about. Its a bit like putting your mac pro in a coffin. with only one side open. do you think this will be a major problem and cause overheating? Or result in the Mac Pro shutting down? If so do you have any suggestions because my desk area does not have any open room for the computer stand with all open air around it.

OS X :: Unable To Run System With Battery / Starts Up But Immediately Shuts Down

Feb 16, 2008

Just wondering if anyone has ever encountered this or if any experts out there know of the issue.

I have a spare White Macbook (late 2008: Core 2 Duo 2.1GHz, 1GB, 120GB) that I'd like to set up for my brother to use to introduce him to the wonderful world of Macs. The problem it is having is that when I have a battery connected to it (I tried 2 different ones included a known-good one that is brand-new just purchased from Apple) it powers on and gives me the chime, but then immediately shuts off unexpectedly giving that little "whine" sound like if it just lost power all of a sudden. However, when i take out the battery, and just plug it into the Magsafe AC charger it works fine. Also when just trying to run on battery it does not turn on at all. Here's some cliffs:

1) Macbook with just battery does not turn on
2) Macbook with battery + Magsafe AC charger connects powers on, gives the chime, but then immediately shuts off making the "whine" sound as if the power was suddenly cut off
3) Macbook with no battery connected and just the Magsafe AC charger connected works fine.

Do you guys think this is either:

A) battery connector issue (the little piece with the metal wires that the battery connects to. ~$50 part)
B) Logic Board issue

I already tried resetting the PRAM and SMU to no avail.

MacBook :: Unable To Use System With Battery / Computer Shuts Down Hwen Start From Battery

Apr 18, 2008

My battery needed replacing for a couple of months before i dropped it from about knee level onto a sidewalk. After the drop I got the not charging icon. I thought maybe the battery had just finally died. so I did not panic about the no charge. The laptop works fine when plugged in to power with the old battery on or no battery at all. Not at all when unplugged.

When I put the brand new battery on the lap top, the computer shuts down halfway through boot up. I tried holding the power button down through boot up reset, as well as removing all power (plug and battery) and holding down the power button for 10 seconds reset.

OS X :: AFP And SMB Shares Messed Up - How To Fix

Nov 18, 2010

The AFP and SMB shares provided by my machine (OSX 10.6.5) seem to be messed up. Specifically:
1) There are shares which are visible from other machines which do not exist in System Preferences -> Sharing -> File Sharing
2) There are share listed in System Preferences -> Sharing -> File Sharing which cannot be deleted
How can this be cleaned up? What drives the set of shares? /var/db/samba/smb.shares is clearly a generated file. What generates it?

OS X :: Top Set Of Keys Got Messed Up

May 10, 2009

I feel kind of stupid for not being able to figure this out but I figured someone else has maybe had this issue and knows how to fix it. My BF was messing around on my computer yesterday and somehow the top set of keys on my Apple wireless keyboard got all messed up. None of them are doing what they are supposed to do. Volume, brightness, escape, eject, etc. Nothing works. When I press the F12 button I'm getting my dashboard instead the volume going up. I tried restoring everything to default but nothing seems to be working.

OS X :: 10.5 Install Messed Up PowerBook G4

Feb 21, 2009

So I recently upgraded my PBG4 1Ghz TiBook from 10.3 to 10.5, and I've had a bunch of problems crop up.

1. Network issues. As part of the upgrade, my Airport Extreme and Airport Express were updated too. Now Airport Utility doesn't see my AEBS or my AEX half the time (or will see one but not the other) unless I plug in using the ethernet port. Also, signal strength seems to have degraded considerably. I'm typing this with about 6 feet between my computer and my base station, and I only have three of four bars. At my couch, I used to receive four bars, but now only two. Previously, I was able to roam my house without dropping below the full four in any location.

2. Embedded videos. Gone. Can no longer see video streams on news sites, youtube videos embedded in web pages, and the like.

3. iPhoto. Dead. Do I need to purchase iLife separately? I thought this was included with previous versions of OS X?

4. Laptop speakers. Dead. iTunes plays music, but only the occasional crackle emerges from the speakers.

5. Time Machine. Doesn't work with my external HD.

OS X :: My Functions Keys Are All Messed Up?

Apr 26, 2009

I was very 'cleverly' trying out all the function keys as I had read that one of them was supposed to be a desktop shortcut i.e when its pressed you see the desktop immediately!

Somehow all the keys have now all messed up - i.e the volume keys no longer work and instead they produce the dashboard key etc - all very weird for me!

I've read a similar post by a user who had the same issue last year and have tried to use the reply that was given to him - but its not worked i.e

System Preferences > Keyboard & Mouse > Keyboard > Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys.... (that's checked!)

I don't know what else to try - why isn't the RESTORE TO FACTORY DEFAULT working!

I know i managed to get the right click mouse button option working for my macbook yesterday (and the F keys seemed to have stopped working since then).

OS X :: Internet Browsers All Messed Up

Aug 6, 2009

For the past week or two my internet browsers (safari and firefox) have been acting very strange. They are both constantly freezing (spinning wheel), which I can live with, but the worst part is that they both seem to be losing their internet connection all the time. I don't use safari a lot, but I use firefox every day. If I completely close the program (so, Quit Firefox) and then open it again it works fine for a couple of pages but then it starts just loading forever without something actually happening. If I close it, again it's fine for a couple of pages. This all started happening after I downloaded Hotspot Shield and Freedur, both of which I uninstalled within an hour of installing. I can't find any residuals of these program. In Firefox my search history has also been almost completely deleted and for some reason the suggestions in Google and Youtube have been turned off. I don't have any extra add-ons or plug-ins.

Applications :: IMovie All Messed Up - Won't Play

Jan 8, 2011

all of the sudden after restarting my computer it wont work. I can't play the project i was working on, and i cant get the little red bar to move across my project. I have to like, visit my project library and then go back to my project to get the red bar to move, but then when i try to play it, it wont play. One time after clicking around a lot i got it to play, but only the sound played and none of the video previewed.

NOW when I go and do things to get it to play, instead of playing my song that I put to go along with the movie, it plays random songs from my itunes or random songs from the videos i used to make my video. So what the hell is going on here? Edit;; I just remembered- I was working on it fine last night at around 11, but then I went out with friends and left my laptop open. I came back and my computer was logged out, and some bogus amount of *****'s were typed in to the login like someone was trying to get in it (I've got a roommate, i'm in college) also, my laptop was shut, when i remember leaving it open on my bed.
So did someone like, get on and totally **** up my program? is that even possible?

Hardware :: Messed Up Function Key Mappings

Aug 15, 2008

I managed to somehow screw up my function key mappings, and can't figure out how to get things back to "default".

I use the following function keys daily:
F1/F2: brightness
F3: expose
F10: mute
F11: vol down
F12: vol up

I somehow hit a key combination that threw everything out of wack. All of my functions have now shifted all over the place (ie: expose is no longer F3, it's now F9). I went into system preferences, and was able to re-map expose...but that's it. I can't figure out how to map the audio functions (mute and volume) and brightness control back to their original mappings.

I tried clicking on "Restore Defaults" within the Keyboard Shortcuts window...but it didn't work. Also, I now have an ugly black box around the item I've selected on my desktop. For example, if I click on my hard drive on the desktop...it'll put a big black box around it. If I click (or move my arrow key) on the next item...the black box is then moved there...indicating it's selected. How do I get rid of this ugly box?

IMac :: Bad Graphics Board - Screen Messed Up?

Sep 10, 2010

Am having a problem with the screen getting "messed up" is the best way that I can describe it. Happens with all different apps running but nearly always shows up when trying to edit a photo in iPhoto. When I make an adjustment there (like sharpening) the photo will turn all red and the system will lock up. This does not always happen, but just most of the time. In other apps, it can result in just messing up that page or the entire screen. I can replace the Graphics card myself if that is what the problem is but is there any way to test it before laying out the $250?
