OS X :: 10.5 Install Messed Up PowerBook G4

Feb 21, 2009

So I recently upgraded my PBG4 1Ghz TiBook from 10.3 to 10.5, and I've had a bunch of problems crop up.

1. Network issues. As part of the upgrade, my Airport Extreme and Airport Express were updated too. Now Airport Utility doesn't see my AEBS or my AEX half the time (or will see one but not the other) unless I plug in using the ethernet port. Also, signal strength seems to have degraded considerably. I'm typing this with about 6 feet between my computer and my base station, and I only have three of four bars. At my couch, I used to receive four bars, but now only two. Previously, I was able to roam my house without dropping below the full four in any location.

2. Embedded videos. Gone. Can no longer see video streams on news sites, youtube videos embedded in web pages, and the like.

3. iPhoto. Dead. Do I need to purchase iLife separately? I thought this was included with previous versions of OS X?

4. Laptop speakers. Dead. iTunes plays music, but only the occasional crackle emerges from the speakers.

5. Time Machine. Doesn't work with my external HD.

PowerPC :: Super - Messed Up Powerbook G4 Can't Find HD On Startup?

Feb 10, 2008

to make a long story short, my first gen 17" G4 PB had its trackpad/power button cable severed a year ago, forcing me to remove the battery and memory door each time I need to start up. It's been kernel panicking a lot in the last few months, but always restarts fine. Tonight, on startup, it could not find the HD, and the logo shifted from happy mac to question mark and back. Is my HD toast? I know the comp is totally doomed and will be getting a new MBP when they come out (if they come out...), but I had wanted to keep the Powerbook in order to do a firewire transfer of files to the new MBP I get. Can this be fixed? Can the HD be mounted in an enclosure?

PowerPC :: PowerBook Ti - Install New HD

Jun 3, 2009

I bought a new 320gb HD to put in my PB G4 "ti" and a new external case to drop the old 60mb HD into when all is said and done.

What would happen if I put the new 320mb HD into the external case, connected it to the PB then dragged and dropped the old 60mb HD onto the 320mb HD to copy it.

Then swapped out the drives. Would the PB start up from the new 320mb HD?

I know that there are other ways of doing this, and I've tried a few, but having problems with the normal and conventional ways!

My OS 10.4 install disk is damaged. And for some reason SuperDuper hangs up in cloning the 60 HD to the 320 HD.

PowerPC :: Remote Install Mac OS X To A Powerbook?

Jan 4, 2010

I already have a Macbook Pro, but I am looking at buying a cheap, used powerbook on eBay as a new "beater" machine. I found a nice one, except the superdrive is dead. If I were to buy it I would want to do a clean install of Leopard, requiring an optical drive. My question is: would I be able to share the superdrive of my Macbook Pro to the Powerbook as if it were a Macbook Air?

PowerPC :: PowerBook G4 - How To Do Remote Install

Feb 1, 2010

The PB G4 has issues with the DVD drive so i would like to install it from the MBP via the Remote Install utility. I looked up the instructions here: [URL]

and also the utility is straight forward, the problem is that neither the Ethernet or Airport works. The G4 doesn't see any sources.

What am i missing ? Does PB G5 even supports remote install ?

ps: when i tried the Ethernet, i've them connected via cross-over cable.

Software :: How To Install Mac OSX On Powerbook G4 Without Administrator Password

Dec 9, 2008

I recently purchased a Powerbook G4 on Ebay and I just received it today. I bought the newest OSX software to put on it but when I put the disc in the computer and click install it says I have to enter an administrator password. I have no idea what the password is! How do I go about reinstalling the OS without the password? I just simply want to clear everything and reset it. I am not a computer technical person and normally on a PC I just put the disc in the computer and restart it and it boots from the disc. I tried doing that with the Mac but it never starts up an installation when I turn the computer on with the disc in it. I looked on another website and someone said to restart it with the disc in and hold the apple button and the C button and the down button. I tried that a couple of times and nothing happened.

Software :: Powerbook G4 That Will Not Recognize The Install Disk?

Apr 19, 2009

I have a situation which seems somewhat unique to what my searches have uncovered. I have a powerbook g4 that will not recognize the install disk it came with. The version is 10.2.7

The Powerbook was working just fine with 10.4.11 when I tried to downgrade Quicktime using Pacifist. I must have done something wrong because the Powerbook turned into a brick. I was able to boot onto my tower G5 and back up all my important data, I then reformatted the drive to mac os journaled and zeroed it. The problem I am having is that when I try to boot from the original install disc I get an error on gray screen that says "You need to restart your computer" Sometimes it doesn't even get this far, it just shows the apple logo and then the screen goes buggy and the machine powers down. What I currently have at my disposal is a G5 tower running 10.4.10, three 10.3 install discs that came with the tower, a burned copy of 10.4, and the Powerbook's original 10.2.7 install disc.

PowerPC :: Install Disk Wont Eject / Cant Turn Powerbook On

Aug 12, 2009

I bought a powerbook off ebay, it worked but on startup occasionally a folder icon would appear. I rebooted from the original discs which seemed to do the trick. However the original discs are too old for many of my apps, so I bought some newer install discs (osx 10.5) I put the install disk in and got the panic message 'panic: Im hanging here'

The answer seems to be to run a disk repair (am i right?) However to do that I need to eject the install disc, I can't get the install disk out and of course it keeps tripping up everytime I start it. There is no secret little button to eject the disk manually. I have tried holding down apple and S but the install disk over rides everything and trips the mac up. I think ill be okay if I can just get this disk out.

PowerPC :: 12" PowerBook G4 Not Booting Properly Unless In Safe Mode After Clean Install

Jun 29, 2009

I recently purchased a sort of beat up 1.5GHz 12" PowerBook G4, top of the line, and it arrived today. It boots up normally when the apple appears, then it shows the blue screen and then the mouse turns into a spinning wheel. Also, when I move the cursor, a second cursor from the same spot stays in the top-left corner. The PowerBook will only work normally as a headless server (powers on, lid closed), unless booted in safe mode. Another issue is the screen. The seller said there were lines going up and down the screen, but it varies depending on what is displayed on the screen. If the screen is grey or in target-disk mode, they do not appear, but on the 10.5 standard desktop pic, it changes pattern. The lines can be seen here: [URL]

2) There are share listed in System Preferences -> Sharing -> File Sharing which cannot be deleted
How can this be cleaned up? What drives the set of shares? /var/db/samba/smb.shares is clearly a generated file. What generates it?

Volume, brightness, escape, eject, etc. Nothing works. When I press the F12 button I'm getting my dashboard instead the volume going up. I tried restoring everything to default but nothing seems to be working.

OS X :: My Functions Keys Are All Messed Up?

Apr 26, 2009

I was very 'cleverly' trying out all the function keys as I had read that one of them was supposed to be a desktop shortcut i.e when its pressed you see the desktop immediately!

Somehow all the keys have now all messed up - i.e the volume keys no longer work and instead they produce the dashboard key etc - all very weird for me!

I've read a similar post by a user who had the same issue last year and have tried to use the reply that was given to him - but its not worked i.e

System Preferences > Keyboard & Mouse > Keyboard > Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys.... (that's checked!)

I don't know what else to try - why isn't the RESTORE TO FACTORY DEFAULT working!

I know i managed to get the right click mouse button option working for my macbook yesterday (and the F keys seemed to have stopped working since then).

OS X :: Internet Browsers All Messed Up

Aug 6, 2009

For the past week or two my internet browsers (safari and firefox) have been acting very strange. They are both constantly freezing (spinning wheel), which I can live with, but the worst part is that they both seem to be losing their internet connection all the time. I don't use safari a lot, but I use firefox every day. If I completely close the program (so, Quit Firefox) and then open it again it works fine for a couple of pages but then it starts just loading forever without something actually happening. If I close it, again it's fine for a couple of pages. This all started happening after I downloaded Hotspot Shield and Freedur, both of which I uninstalled within an hour of installing. I can't find any residuals of these program. In Firefox my search history has also been almost completely deleted and for some reason the suggestions in Google and Youtube have been turned off. I don't have any extra add-ons or plug-ins.

Applications :: IMovie All Messed Up - Won't Play

Jan 8, 2011

all of the sudden after restarting my computer it wont work. I can't play the project i was working on, and i cant get the little red bar to move across my project. I have to like, visit my project library and then go back to my project to get the red bar to move, but then when i try to play it, it wont play. One time after clicking around a lot i got it to play, but only the sound played and none of the video previewed.

NOW when I go and do things to get it to play, instead of playing my song that I put to go along with the movie, it plays random songs from my itunes or random songs from the videos i used to make my video. So what the hell is going on here? Edit;; I just remembered- I was working on it fine last night at around 11, but then I went out with friends and left my laptop open. I came back and my computer was logged out, and some bogus amount of *****'s were typed in to the login like someone was trying to get in it (I've got a roommate, i'm in college) also, my laptop was shut, when i remember leaving it open on my bed.
So did someone like, get on and totally **** up my program? is that even possible?

Hardware :: Messed Up Function Key Mappings

Aug 15, 2008

I managed to somehow screw up my function key mappings, and can't figure out how to get things back to "default".

I use the following function keys daily:
F1/F2: brightness
F3: expose
F10: mute
F11: vol down
F12: vol up

I somehow hit a key combination that threw everything out of wack. All of my functions have now shifted all over the place (ie: expose is no longer F3, it's now F9). I went into system preferences, and was able to re-map expose...but that's it. I can't figure out how to map the audio functions (mute and volume) and brightness control back to their original mappings.

I tried clicking on "Restore Defaults" within the Keyboard Shortcuts window...but it didn't work. Also, I now have an ugly black box around the item I've selected on my desktop. For example, if I click on my hard drive on the desktop...it'll put a big black box around it. If I click (or move my arrow key) on the next item...the black box is then moved there...indicating it's selected. How do I get rid of this ugly box?
