Today I realized someone used my system to access porn sites in Safari. At first I panicked. So what I did was: I erased all cookies; I cleared all cache and finally cleared all history (including top sites). What are the chances my Mac is infected with something harmful? View 6 RepliesI set myself as the owner on my iBook the other day. Now when I start the computer, I get a black terminal screen as a login screen. It asks me to type in my username and password. It lets me type in my username, but when I try to type my password no characters show up, and it won't let me log in due to incorrect login information. Since everyone except me, the owner, has no access, there is no other login screen and it's just blank until I restart the computer and get the black screen over again. What do I do? Why aren't characters showing up when I type in my pass? I tried plugging in a third party keyboard but it didn't make any difference.

I recently switched hard drives because of a problem with the old (native) one. I retrieved certain files from the backup of the old HDD then proceeded to backup the new HDD. Now I can't access my files from the old backups because "I don't have the permission to see it's contents".
How do I go about this? How do I "authorize" myself?

My Macbook Pro (10.9.3) wouldn't boot up. I'd get the gray spinning progress indicator along with a gray progress bar which would get about 10% through and then restart.
I booted into recovery mode and run Disk Utility to repair the disk and got a message saying can't repair, back up your files.
So I took the HDD out and mounted it as an external drive on my Mac Mini (10.9.3). I got a message saying it's read only and I should back up my files. I can browse to my users directory and see all the base folders (Movies, Music, Docs, etc), but there's a red no entry icon on all the folders and accessing them through Finder shows they are empty.
I browsed the files through Terminal as super user and can see the files. I can also copy the files through Terminal. However, after copying a test directory some of the files are read only and others are still no access.
So the question is, how do I back up these files and maintain permissions?
If I try to view a password for either an application or website using Keychain. As soon as I tick the box 'show password' a message pops up saying "Access to this item is restricted" How can I access and view my passwords?

I have a MacBook Pro running OS 10.6. There were websites I used to visit without any problems (like www.livestrong.com and gigapedia.com). Then one day (nothing changed hardware or software-wise), I could no longer access these sites from my computer. My friend came over - with his PC - and was able to access it from my network. I was also able to access the sites from my wife's iMac G5 and iPod Touch (same network), but I still cannot access them on my computer using ANY browser (Safari and Firefox). I cannot access the site from anyone's network either --- making me think my MBP is doing something weird with the Network Settings. I keep getting: "The server denies connections. The server might be too busy or might be disabled. Try again a bit later." I have installed Glimmerblocker on Safari and AdBlocker on Firefox, but turning these off does NOT change my results. What do I need to reset or what did I do to cause this? How do I fix this?

Is there an opinion as to which is better, it at all? I am using it with OS 10.3.6 on two G4's, a Titanium laptop, and a 1.25 dual processor, both with plenty of RAM. There is, however, one specific question. Some sites I can access fully with the laptop, but not with the desktop, even though they are virtually the same hardware & software.

Everything else in System Preference works, but when I click on Security the program would freeze then shut itself down.....

Previous History: I'm on a MacPro and I have my main user account on another volume than my system. This has worked just beautifully for me over the past years, sometimes there are drawbacks and it's kind of more failure-prone in some cases. This 'some cases' now happened again: there was a blackout and after that I couldn't login to my user account on the non-system volume anymore. I've been there once and hadn't any problems fixing it somehow, but now I screwed up big time.
