OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Access Backup Files That Are Restricted To Certain Profiles?

Mar 12, 2012

I recently switched hard drives because of a problem with the old (native) one. I retrieved certain files from the backup of the old HDD then proceeded to backup the new HDD. Now I can't access my files from the old backups because "I don't have the permission to see it's contents".

How do I go about this? How do I "authorize" myself?

OS X Mavericks :: How To Access Restricted Files From Hard Drive That Won't Boot

Jun 25, 2014

My Macbook Pro (10.9.3) wouldn't boot up.  I'd get the gray spinning progress indicator along with a gray progress bar which would get about 10% through and then restart.

I booted into recovery mode and run Disk Utility to repair the disk and got a message saying can't repair, back up your files.

So I took the HDD out and mounted it as an external drive on my Mac Mini (10.9.3).  I got a message saying it's read only and I should back up my files.  I can browse to my users directory and see all the base folders (Movies, Music, Docs, etc), but there's a red no entry icon on all the folders and accessing them through Finder shows they are empty.

I browsed the files through Terminal as super user and can see the files.  I can also copy the files through Terminal.  However, after copying a test directory some of the files are read only and others are still no access.

So the question is, how do I back up these files and maintain permissions?

OS X :: IBook 10.4.11 Login - Restricted Access?

Apr 2, 2009

I set myself as the owner on my iBook the other day. Now when I start the computer, I get a black terminal screen as a login screen. It asks me to type in my username and password. It lets me type in my username, but when I try to type my password no characters show up, and it won't let me log in due to incorrect login information. Since everyone except me, the owner, has no access, there is no other login screen and it's just blank until I restart the computer and get the black screen over again. What do I do? Why aren't characters showing up when I type in my pass? I tried plugging in a third party keyboard but it didn't make any difference.

Firstly I could see the folders in finder but could not open them, now I can't see the folders. I tried opening photos from phtoshop and though I could see and select them, it crashed when I tried to open them. When reimporting CDs it asks if I want to replace existing files? OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Time Machine Fails To Backup Crucial Files?

Mar 12, 2012

So I just started using Time Machine (had been using CCC). A quick scan of my backup shows that it's not backing up my Outlook email database file. This missing file is very concerning to me. First of all, this is one of my most important files, needless to say. But also, it makes me wonder, what other important files might Time Machine be deciding to skip without my knowledge. I went into my Time Machine preferences and have no exclusions in there

My iMac (Model 4,1 operating 10.6.4) drive has made some funny noises recently when inserting disks. I want to back up Pages documents to DVD's so that I can take them to a print shop if needed later. I have an Iomega back up hard drive but I really want an external burner. I used to have a Tower years ago and loved the front loading slot (great for burning Word, Excel, Pages and PDF files to DVD's}. While I have the Iomga back up drive, that will not help if my computer sighs it's last breath & I need to access some of the back up files.

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Time Machine Backup Freezes On Initial Backup Attempt?

Mar 20, 2012

I just purchased a Seagate 3 TB USB 2.0/3.0 external drive to use as my time machine backup drive.  I have a MacBook Pro that was purchased about 3-4 years ago.  The MacBook Pro has a 120 GB hard drive and is currently running MAC OSx 10.6.8.  I also have another WD 1 TB FireWire external drive that I use to store all of my media files.

After I followed the instructions for installing the new Seagate drive for use with the MAC OSx, I initiated a time machine backup.  It very quickly determined that it needed to back up almost 900,000 files totaling just about 400 GB.  It started the backup process at a rate of about 1 GB per minute.  In a little less than an hour it reach 53 GB and remained there for an additional two hours before I decided to stop the backup.

Once I got the backup stopped, I deleted the backup and decided to look at my energy saving settings.  I noticed that the "Put drives to sleep whenever possible" check box was checked, so I unchecked that option and restarted the MAC.  I then initiated the time machine backup again.  Like the first time it quickly determined that it needed to backup the same amount of data as before and started the backup process at a rate of about 1 GB per minute.  Before going to bed at around 11 PM last night it was at about 60 GB so I thought I was out of the woods (having gotten further than the 53 GB earlier).  When I woke up this morning at 5:30 AM it was sitting at 69 GB.

I am really frustrated at this point and don't know why the time machine back up would be failing on a brand new hard drive. PS - I was previously using a Seagate 1.5 TB USB drive as my time machine backup and never had any issues with it.  I decided to use the 1.5 TB drive for a different purpose, which is why I have the new 3 TB drive to use as a backup.  And I still have the full backup on the 1.5 TB drive just in case anything were to go awry.

Mac OS X Lion Server :: Altering Files On Network Profiles?

May 11, 2012

I have set up a server with several network profiles. When logged into a network profile the user has no problem creating and saving a file of any kind, as soon as you edit and try and resave one of these files (only those of utilize Versions) does it give you an error "The file cannot be saved." at which point it reverts back to the origional file or offers to save it under a new name. Through trouble shooting I've discovered it only happens when trying to resave files that use versions, and only happens when im accessing these accounts through the network profile (in other words if i loggin and screen share to the account everything works fine), which in tern suggests the problem is occuring in the disconect between the home folder(which is all the network profile accesses) and the applications.

OS X :: Snow Leopard Broke DNS-323 Samba Access?

Aug 18, 2009

So, with build 10A432, I'm unable to access the files on my DNS-323 via Samba. It gives me this error ...

"The operation can't be completed because the original item for "Volume_1" can't be found."

I can access everything fine from another machine running Leopard. I believe this is a known issue with Snow Leopard, further hardening my belief that this is a very useless upgrade. The only real thing SL has got going for it, is the fact that it is cheap. That's why people will buy it, because its only $29.

Coming back to the topic, can someone suggest me a fix?

Also, if you want to debate the worthiness of SL as a $29 upgrade, please don't bother posting here. I don't want any smart fanboy comments either. Let's stick to the topic at hand.

OS X :: VPN / SSH Server And Secure Remote Access For Snow Leopard

Feb 3, 2010

I would like to ask on how I can connect securely to my iMac at home from my MBP when I'm travelling. I have subscribed to MobileMe, unfortunately, it is not always possible to connect using MobileMe due to technical issues (Many would have agreed that MobileMe are not reliable at times).

What I would like to achieve is the following:

1) Install either a VPN and/or SSH server in my iMac at home

2) Enable access not only my iMac but also my home network and internet connection from my home.

2) Be able to browse using my iMac or AEBS in my home network from my MBP in a secure way (similar to proxy).

I understand that I can setup SSH server and do some port forwarding with it. I need more details or tutorial on this, if you have any link that would be appreicated. Basically, I understand the idea but this would be impractical as I need to setup a lot of forwarding (one forwarding for each service).

So VPN solution may be cleaner in a way. I checked that OpenVPN.net doesn't support newer OSX anymore. Any idea how to do this? I have identified an OpenVPN client that can be used but not the server portion.
