OS X :: Smaller Footprint Thingy?
Aug 24, 2009
That's my question: What's Up With the 'Smaller Footprint' thingy?! why does it free up space? it might sound dumb but well i had to know but i noticed an awkward thing just now, yesterday i was checking SL's features and where it says 'Smaller footprint' it said: Quote: Snow Leopard takes up less than half the disk space of the previous version, freeing about 6GB for you — enough for about 1,500 more songs or a few thousand more photos. and today i happened to cross by that page again, and i saw this: Quote: Snow Leopard takes up less than half the disk space of the previous version, freeing about 7GB for you — enough for about 1,750 more songs or a few thousand more photos. I Mean, since they started advertising that SL will free up space they've always said 6GB but just now it turned 7GB?

With disk space being at a premium on the new MacBook Air, and with myself being a very basic user when it comes to office applications, I was wondering what Microsoft office version takes up the least space. Over the years I have accumulated 2004, 2008 and was considering the new version. Only interested in excel and word installations.

Please this is not a question about whether you use Safari or Firefox.
What Browser has the smallest memory footprint for use on the MBA?
With limited ram @ 2GB I find either Safari, Firefox, Camino, etc using as much as 200MB +/- in activity monitor. Are there some more obscure browsers that use/need less memory and function just as well or almost as well?

Because the iPad will further the growing market for cloud computing, international environmental advocacy group has criticized Apple's newest hardware for having "a much larger carbon footprint than previously estimated."
The new report from Greenpeace issued this week claims that "quintessential cloud computing devices," like Apple's iPad, raise questions about how the Internet is powered. Specifically, the nongovernmental organization said increase demand for online services will also result in a larger demand for "dirty coal power."
"To be clear: We are not picking on Apple," the group said. "We are not dissing the iPad. But maybe someone can come up with an app that calculates the carbon footprint of using different web sites based on their location and energy deals.
"Apple is the master of promotion, and while we marvel at the sleek unpolluted design of the iPad, we need to think about where this is all leading and how like all good surfers we can make sure our environment stays clean and green."
The report, entitled "Make IT Green: Cloud Computing and its Contribution to Climate Change," concludes that connected mobile devices like the iPad will increase the use of online services like social networks and video streaming. The report noted that Facebook recently announced the construction of its own data center in Prineville, Oregon that will primarily run on coal.
The report states that data centers and telecommunication networks will consume about 1,963 billion kilowatt hours of electricity in 2020, which is more than triple their current consumption and over half of the total electricity consumption in America. Devices like the iPad, the environmental group suggests, will only add to global warming pollution.
"As the cloud grows, the IT industry's appetite for energy will only increase, so the industry must become strong advocates for renewable energy solutions and strong laws that cut global warming pollution," said Casey Harrell, Greenpeace International campaigner. "IT companies like Microsoft, Google, and IBM are now in powerful positions at the local, national, and international levels to influence policies that will allow them to grow responsibly in a way that will decouple their economic growth from rising greenhouse gas emissions."
When Apple introduced the iPad in January, it touted the environmental checklist for the construction of the new hardware. The company noted that the device is free of arsenic, brominated flame retardant, mercury, polyvinyl chloride, and is highly recyclable.
Greenpeace's attitude toward Apple has improved significantly over the last few years, with the environmental group ranking the Mac maker the greenest electronics maker earlier this year. The praise was quite a change from just a few years ago, when Greenpeace was targeting Apple over the use of toxic chemicals in its products.
Last Year, Apple co-founder Steve Jobs revealed that Greenpeace's actions played a part in his company eventually promoting its green focus in public. He said the company's tight-lipped approach, particularly on public policy issues, hurt its image with environmental organizations.
Last September, Apple began reporting its hardware carbon emissions, and touting its environmentally friendly hardware. The Cupertino, Calif., company said less than 5 percent of its emissions come from manufacturing facilities, while more than 95 percent of Apple's greenhouse gases are from use of the products they make.

So I downloaded Windows 7, and Im kinda confused on how to make the boot disk. I have tried to use Disk Utility by selecting the ISO and clicking burn, but there is always an error. Do I burn the disk image itself, or the folder that comes from it?

sorry I don't know how to be anymore specific in a thread title. Next to my unibody Macbook Pro June 09's disc insert thing on the right hand side of the MBP, there looks like a little port or something? It's to the left of the disc tray which is on the right hand side of the MBP. I could have sworn that port wasn't a port, but now I think the cover fell off or something? Or was there never a cover on it?

many of you guys probably know the splendid app, album art thingy; it automatically puts cover art and lyrics to the song you're listening to in itunes. well , I was wondering; is there an app around that does the same thing or that is even better. or an app that is available for free or cheaper than the 15 $ that album art thingy costs?

I'm still a mac newbie. I have a late 2009 MBP and when I press my f12 key usually a thingy zoomed in over my screen that had like a calculator, world clock, weather, and something else. I liked this thingy. It worked this morning while I used it to help do some basic math (I'm not a math person). But a few minutes ago when I hit my f12 key it didn't pop up! Instead there was a little dashboard thingy at the bottom of my screen that slid in and said "widgets" and reminded me exactly of the annoying widget dashboard on my old PC. I don't know how or why it has changed. How do I get the cool "zoom in over my screen thingy" back?

Most of the photos I receive are huge, about 1MB or more. In order to put them on my rescue group's website, they must be much smaller, preferably 100-200KB. Where in the world can I do this on iPhoto?
The only way I've found is to email the picture to myself. There absolutely has to be a better/faster way.

I'm going to upgrade my harddrives soon. I use about 300gb of space in my hd, and want to upgrade to a raid-0 (2x1tero) hd configuration... and use my current 500gb drive for my time machine hd. Will that work up until i approach 400-500 gb? Or do i need a 2 tero hd for time machine to work at all? I am not that concerned with having time machine go back too far, i just want an uptodate backup mostly...

having my eyes get used to the 1900x1200 resolution in my 17" unibody macbook pro's screen is probably not good with the macbook air's 1280x800 resolution i use at home, so i need to press "cmd -" every time i browse some pages.
is there any way to make safari load pages with smaller text size? 1 press of "cmd -" is probably good enough.

When using bootcamp with Windows 7: My 1080p output is shrunk as if it has the wrong overscan settings. I am using a direct HDMI cable and the display works just fine when using OSX Lion. I tried updating the AMD Catalyst software directly and there is no change. In fact: it's as if the catalyst didn't even install. I can't find the control panel anywhere. It's not the monitor, I tried all the auto adjustment stuff. Plus, again, it works in OSX It's not a cable. I tried switching them. Other computers display correctly to the monitor (Acer, 1080p)Â

I am using a WD 'My Book for Mac' external drive on my mac. I have noticed that photo files are backing up in a much smaller resolution (e.g. 50kb vs the 2mb original). I can't seem to locate a full size on the WD drive. Any tips as I would hate to lose the drive and find all that I have backed up is effectively a thumbnail of all my photos.Â

I've just tried to mess around with some stuff in iTunes so i can sync my iPhone on both of my Macs. I did it all as instructed but when I opened the window was huge, and I can't make it any smaller. It's like a copy of my iTunes on my 24" iMac.
I tried deleting everything iTunes related and reinstalling but still the same.
Anyone got any solutions as to how to have a COMPLETELY clean version of itunes, or how to make the window smaller?
