OS X :: Slowdown In Web Browsing

Jun 6, 2009

I just got off the phone with an Apple Specialist because of some slowdown in web browsing that seemed to be getting progressively worse. The tech had me
go the the primary LIBRARY folder on my mac HD and delete the following folders:

1. CACHE
2. STARTUPITEMS

and then go into LIBRARY folder under my user ID and delete the following folder

1. CACHE

I then cleaned out the trashcan and restarted the computer. Web browsing is much faster now. He recommended doing this once a month if you do a lot of web browsing. you may get a warning upon restarting your browser regarding the missing cache folders and you just have the OS 'Fix' the problem ( which is one of the options).

ITunes 10.6 CPU Hog Causing Overall Slowdown

Mar 10, 2012

I just upgraded my iTunes to 10.6. I seem to be having a different issue than most other people. My itunes opens and syncs with everything fine. However, while listening to music, iTunes randomly takes up 80%-105% of the CPU which causes my entire computer to slowdown and everything becomes choppy. eventually the music starts to get choppy and skip, so then i just have to shut down iTunes and the computer performance returns to normal. I can watch the activity monitor with iTunes running and can see the CPU stay around 5-10% and then all of a sudden spikes to around 105% and then back down and then back up to 70-80% and stays there awhile, eventually causing the choppy performance all around.

I didn't have any of these issues before the update. I have tried reinstalling itunes, repairing permissions, zapping the pram, all the usual diagnostic tricks, but i still have the same problem. with all the issues other people seem to be having, i would hope apple will release an update soon, and hopefully that will also fix my issue, but I don't see other people having this problem and was wondering if anyone know anything I could check in the meantime?

Windows On Mac :: SolidWorks XP To Win7 Slowdown?

Oct 7, 2010

For the last several months I've been running SolidWorks 2010 on a new MacBook Pro (Core i5 M 520 @ 2.40GHz) dual booting into XP. It's been running fine and outperforming my couple year old Dell Xeon Workstation by a few percent when benchmarked using Anna Wood's CPU intensive punch holder, averaging about 88. I decided to upgrade to Win 7, which I've been very happy with on the desktop and showed consistant performance with XP. However, I was very disappointed and confused to find that the Win 7 on the MacBook slowed down to 112 for the 32 bit install and 126 for x64. Test were run with consistant settings and on AC power. 've fiddled with the Windows settings to maximize performance. The windows experience scores, for whatever that's worth, are higher than the desktop. I'm a bit confused as to what's going on. Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions?

I get the rainbow icon often now whereas before it was quite rare.

OS X :: Downloading A File / Wireless Connection Slowdown?

Jan 15, 2010

While I was downloading a file earlier, I clicked on the Airport icon in the menu bar to see which wireless network I was connected to. As Airport scanned for wireless networks (it does it automatically after clicking the Airport icon), I noticed that the speed of the download dropped so far that it practically stopped for a moment. I tried it a few other times and got a similar result. Anyone else notice connection drops/slowdowns when clicking on the Airport icon while it scans for other networks? Is there a way to prevent this? I'm running OS X 10.6.2 on a MacBook Pro. I posted it here because it seemed more of an OS thing than hardware.

MacBook :: WiFi Slowdown When Connected To TV (No External Monitor)

Sep 28, 2009

I have a strange problem with a WiFi slowdown when connected to a TV. Here are the specs of the equipment:
2.2 Ghz white macbook, santa rosa, 4 gb ram, purchased January 2008
Panasonic TV connected via HDMI to DVI cable + Apple Mini DVI to DVI connector
USB Western Digital harddrive connected to a 500 GB Time Capsule (1st edition, no dual channels)
Snow leopard 10.6.1

Before upgrading to snow leopard, I would frequently use the macbook to provide video to the above mentioned TV streamed from a hard drive connected to an imac (connected to the same time capsule). I moved, and upgraded to snow leopard, and haven't tried this until finished setting up my equipment yesterday. I can stream videos to the macbook from this hard drive fine when nothing is connected. However, the moment I plug in the mini-DVI connector, the WiFi drops to a crawl. This applies not only the to air disk but any data from the network (internet, etc.)

A couple of additional notes: Display is set to mirror. Has nothing to do with clamshell mode because the macbook isn't closed. Nothing to do with location/interference- the effect is instantaneous with plugging and unplugging the cable. The base station is actually closer than in my previous setup and is pretty much 20 feet away in direct line of sight. I connect to another external monitor daily at work (vga, again with apple mini dvi to vga adapter)- no issue whatsoever restart did not help. I canceled all time machine backups over the network to limit that as a factor- no effect.

OS X :: Mac Snow Leopard Freezing / Slowdown (Mac Fuse / NTFS 3G & NTFS)

Jun 11, 2010

This is a thread for anyone who is experiencing a large slowdown and/or intermittent 10-60 second freezes on Mac OSX Snow Leopard, where the freezes are completely unrelated to anything you're doing, any app you're using, or whether the system is under heavy or little use. I found the issue stems from the use of Mac Fuse (with NTFS-3G installed) and/or Paragon NTFS for Mac OSX, the combination of these 2 apps essentially doing the same job (NTFS write support), conflicts and causes the hard drive to be under constant (although very little) use, which can randomly cause 30-60 second freezes. If anyone is experiencing these same freezes, uninstall either one app or the other, or both, and that might help remedy the situation. EDIT: updated because I didn't specifically mention which macFUSE plugin I had installed....

OS X :: Keep Top Sites While Using Private Browsing?

Dec 15, 2010

I like to use private browsing. Why is it after I set up my top sites and then use private browsing, if I open another window (command, n), I'll lose my top sites. Before I leave top sites, I make sure that I'm done editing and that the thumb tack is blue and not black which I'm told saves the sites. So what's going on? I'm actually at the Apple Store and the trainer at my personal projects sessions just doesn't know why this doesn't work. Anyone know how I can keep my top sites while I use private browsing?

Mac Mini :: Should I Be Hearing The Fan When Web Browsing?

Oct 26, 2008

I've just picked up a brand new C2D 2.0GHz 2GB mini. Yup, too impatient to wait for the refresh, whenever that might be.I had expected this little thing to be quieter than it is. It's not that it's loud exactly (except when I play 720p video, at which point it becomes a bit of a screamer), but should I be hearing the fan when all I'm doing is browsing the web?For example, all I have running right now is Finder and Firefox (with the Macrumors forums thread editor in a single tab) and I can hear the whir and grind of the fan (which actually seems uncertain about just how fast it wants to run).

OS X :: Browsing With Safari On MBP - Freezes

Nov 27, 2009

i have a problem browsing with safari on my macbook pro. i am able to launch safari and it loads my homepage. i can then browse from my homepage to a another page macrumors for instance. the problem occurs when i try to browse away from that page to another, macrumors to kvraudio for example. the page does not load. the blue progress bar across the address stops in the first position. safari then 'freezes' becomes unresponsive and then i have to force quit. i have never experienced a problem like this before. here are my macbook specs:

17" MacBook Pro (May 2009)
Dual 2.6 Ghz
OSX 10.5.6
Safari 3.2.1
Network: Wireless to Airport to Satellite ISP Modem

i am posting this via my old G5 with the same network config. which doesn't have this browsing problem nor does another networked iMac. can anyone recommend a course of action?

OS X :: Does Safari Has Private Browsing?

I have just recently got my first mac, moving from a windows computer.

On my previous pc on internet explorer there was an option for 'Private Browsing' which didn't leave any files or anything and the sites visited were fully untraceable.

On Safari i have noticed the same option, does this do the same (doesn't leave any cache or history or anything like that?)

MacBook Pro :: Its Very Slow When Browsing?

Apr 5, 2012

The ISP was just out and tested my connection. Any other computers are reaching 15Mbps whereas my Mac is speed testing at 6Mbps (when I'm lucky). There is inconsistency, reaching 0.1Mbps up to 6Mbps. I cannot open up youtube--It defaults to an html layout. Videos don't buffer. I also cannot open up any graphic rich websites. It doesn't take very long for webpages to load but they automatically fail to load the images. It's not an airport issue because the same thing occurs when I'm hooked up to my ethernet cable.

OS X :: Private Browsing Not Working In Safari 5?

Jun 20, 2010

In Safari 5, cookies from private browsing session aren't being erased after closing the private browsing session. The private session pages don't appear in the history, so that much works; I have no idea if the cache is being emptied. Is anyone else having this problem? I've uninstalled the add-ons I had (ClickToFlash, Glims) and turned off the new Safari Extensions, so I'm ruling them out as the problem.

OS X :: Safari History And Private Browsing

Dec 28, 2009

It appears as though there may be some suspicious activity occurring on the family computer. Firstly, "private browsing", "reset safari" and "empty cache" all appear under the edit menu in safari. I don't recall having seen them earlier, does this mean they have been recently used or is it part of the standard menu? Also, in the internet history whilst no webpages can be found there are some obscene jpegs. Images found in the internet history, have they been deliberately viewed or is it possible that they find their way there behind the scenes?

OS X :: After Browsing - Unable To Connect With Internet

Feb 23, 2010

Anyways, i used to have a Linksys wrt54g router. It was hooked up and had an SSID of linksys. Later replaced it with i think the wrt110n or whatever the 110 draft N model number is. This router was set up and the wrt54g taken down (no longer plugged in at all). The wrt110n has an SSID of hawkes, and everything works fine but after browsing for an hour or so I will loose internet connection.

When I click the airport icon in the status bar it tells me that I am connected to a network called "linksys". I have to then click to reconnect to hawkes which is the network that I should be on.

Now I'm not sure if there is someone else broadcasting an unencrypted wireless network with the SSID linksys and my mac is just trying to connect to it at times or if it is getting confused and trying to connect to an old network?

I'm wondering if anyone has had similar problems or if anyone knows how I could tell the airport utility to "forget" about old networks with the name linksys so it will stop trying to connect to them?

Software :: Slow Internet Browsing With OS 10.5.7?

Aug 3, 2009

Loading web pages on my Mac Dual G5 is painfully slow, maybe 5-10 seconds to load a popular website (like this one, e.g.).

I'm running Safari v. 3.2.3, but the problem occurs with other browsers like Firefox and Camino.

I also have a Macbook Pro connected by ethernet to same router (Airport), running Safari 4.0.2, and it's just as slow as the desktop Mac.

My ISP is cable and various speed tests show download/upload speeds of 20 Mbps/2 Mbps. I have a PC running Windows Vista on same LAN, connected to same router, and it browses blazingly fast. So the problem is not ISP or modem.

As a lifelong Mac user, I hate to say this, but I'm jealous of my PC!

What could be the issue(s) and fix?

MacBook Pro :: Slow Web Browsing (other Net Functions Seems OK)?

Mar 1, 2012

I've been having intermittent web browsing problems with our mid-2009 MacBook Pro running Lion 10.7.2... our network has an AirPort Extreme with an AirPort Express being the booster router, and the problem seems to have been pretty much only limited to web browsing, that is, other activities like emails, VOIP phones (we use a program called Bria), Skype and iTunes sample streaming seem to have been pretty reliable... I've tried deleting my safari cache.db file as another thread in this forum suggested, and it's a bit too early to tell yet whether that has made a lasting difference, but if it doesn't, does anyone have any ideas about what else might be causing the problem? If it helps, an iPhone 4 on the same home network seems to have significantly better performance when using its web browser.

I am having trouble figuring out how the Safari tab preferences work with shortcuts to websites I have placed in my dock. I have "Open pages in tabs instead of windows" set to "Never," and I have checked "Command-click opens a link in a new tab." This works fine when I am clicking on a link in a website, but when I press command and click on the shortcut in my dock, the link always opens in a new window and not a new tab. Do these preferences apply to an outside link shortcut or just when you are clicking from within a website?
