MacBook :: Is 2.0GHz And 2GB Ram Enough For Web Browsing?
Sep 7, 2010
I'm looking at getting a macbook and I have seen an aluminium unibody macbook with specs of 2.0GHz 2GB Ram and a 160GB hard drive.
Is this enough for my needs of general web browsing, itunes etc or would it be too slow?

The number stand for different version? The larger the number, the better it is? What does GHz stand for?

I've just been given a 15.4" MacBook Pro ICD 2.0Ghz/128MB VRAM/2GB Ram (1x1), and I decided to take a 2GB Ram module out of my 2007 MacBook IC2D 2.16Ghz/Intel GMA with the hope of bringing the MacBook Pro to 3GB.
Now, they both use exactly the same Ram type, I checked first.
667Mhz, DDR2, SDRAM.
Anyway, when the MBP has the 2GB installed, it wont start up at all. No backlight, doesn't want to do anything apart from spin the disk a little.
I put the 2GB module back into the MacBook and it works fine, so I didn't kill it on transfer.
What's going on? Will my MacBook Pro not allow a 2GB module?
Thanks for the help guys, much appreciated.

I recently purchased a dongle to connect my 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo white MacBook to the S-video in my Sony TV. [URL:...] When I got it home it didn't work. I went online only to find that my model of laptop is not able to use this dongle. So my question is - how would I connect my macbook to the S Video in of my TV? I'm thinking I'll need to use the Mini DVI to VGA dongle [URL:...] and then use something else to convert it to S-Video.

I had water spilled on my macbook, now my battery will not charge. Everything else works fine except the battery will not accept a charge. When the AC power is plugged in for the first time after removing the battery it blinks green ONCE and then does not turn on again. When I remove the battery entirely the AC power steadily blinks green. If the battery is removed the macbook will not power on. I am hoping this has happened to someone else before, and does not mean I need to replace the logic board.

I recently went out and got myself the 2Ghz macbook w/o the backlit keyboard. I suddenly realized how often i had used the backlit keyboard on my macbook pro 17" that i sold. I got the computer on April 8th and am still under the 14 day return period and was wondering if you guys thought that i could go to apple and return this model for the 2.4ghz model (extra $300)... and if it was worth it....

what are the differences between the 1st generation 3.0Ghz octo Mac Pro and the 2nd generation 3.0Ghz octo Mac Pro?
How would the 1st gen octo Mac Pro compare to a dual 2.66Ghz Mac Pro of the same era & how does it compare speedwise to the current 2.8Ghz octo?
There is a repected dealer in Germany selling the 1st gen octos as refurb units for a tempting price but unless they are equal to the current 2.8 then I'll pass.

I know what to expect from the 2.8ghz model since you guys can see from my sig of what my previous mac pro setup was like but what do you guys think about the 3.0ghz model?
I remember at times even though the 2.8ghz model was overkill I kind of regretted for a while for not getting the even 3.0ghz.. anyone here whos gotten the 3.0ghz regret it or is it not worth it?

The ISP was just out and tested my connection. Any other computers are reaching 15Mbps whereas my Mac is speed testing at 6Mbps (when I'm lucky). There is inconsistency, reaching 0.1Mbps up to 6Mbps. I cannot open up youtube--It defaults to an html layout. Videos don't buffer. I also cannot open up any graphic rich websites. It doesn't take very long for webpages to load but they automatically fail to load the images. It's not an airport issue because the same thing occurs when I'm hooked up to my ethernet cable.

I've been having intermittent web browsing problems with our mid-2009 MacBook Pro running Lion 10.7.2... our network has an AirPort Extreme with an AirPort Express being the booster router, and the problem seems to have been pretty much only limited to web browsing, that is, other activities like emails, VOIP phones (we use a program called Bria), Skype and iTunes sample streaming seem to have been pretty reliable... I've tried deleting my safari cache.db file as another thread in this forum suggested, and it's a bit too early to tell yet whether that has made a lasting difference, but if it doesn't, does anyone have any ideas about what else might be causing the problem? If it helps, an iPhone 4 on the same home network seems to have significantly better performance when using its web browser.

I listed my Dual 2GHz G5 on ebay and hope to sell it. In the event I can't, would it make a good server if I throw Mac OS X Server on it? Would a server be of any benefit since my network consists of my Mac Pro, Mac Book,a nd Xbox 360?

I received my 11.6 base model Air today. So far everything has rocked about it except for one thing: web surfing. When it loads up pages it jitters when I scroll or will lag on my input. I'm thinking this could either be my WiFi connection, which is my parent's and I'm not use to these speeds, or if the Air is just not that good for web work.

I just recently upgraded (or so i thought) from a Powerboook with OSX 10.3.9 to a new MacBook with Leopard.... Ever since the upgrade I have been experiencing slow browsing with both Firefox and Leopard. I was wondering if any other users had this problem and knew how to fix it?
Some things I experience are slow browsing, pages timing out, pages loading incorrectly, pictures not loading...

I got a refurb 2.4 macbook a couple days ago and have been using it and I absolutely love everything about it
EXCEPT
quite often, when I'm looking at a web page or something on the internet, the page doesn't load. It will get the first part of a bar in Safari but it will stay there for minutes and then go to one of those white screens.

Title says it all really, just really slow when firing up safari, wasn't so slow a few weeks ago, not sure if the safari update killed it, or whether it is just the flashy websites killing the CPU, though the usage doesn't look too high, anyone got any other ideas what might be slowing it down, apart from those mentioned above?

I see several posts about a line across the screen suddenly appearing. The only advice seems to be to get the computer replaced. I'd like to avoid this, obviously, as it leaves me without a computer and with a lot of work to do reinstalling software on a new one. I have not had any problems with the computer, then I installed the firmware update a few days ago (I think it was an update from February? -- something like an "IOE update"?)
This morning, I closed the monitor and the fan kept running for minutes. I opened it up again and clicked "apple" > Sleep. And the display shut off. But the fan kept on blowing. Finally it shut off. But then it started back up. This happened several times. Finally I shut off the computer. Now, Sleep appears to work fine again.
Then this evening I was browsing Reddit and when I clicked on a link, suddenly a row of pixels went out (see picture). I, at first, thought it was some weird pop up. But it persists through restart, and permission repair, and logging in with different users. I tried playing with new desktop backgrounds. This worked at first, then, for some reason, the computer wasn't accepting new desktop choices. Logging out, then back in fixed the problem. But that is sort of weird too.
Are these issues related? Most important to me right now is this line across the screen. Incidentallly, at first the line was of varying shades of gray. Now it appears to be black. Is there a way that Apple can simply put my current hard drive into a new computer for me? This is a late 2011 macbook pro.

Almost daily, I will be in the middle of browsing the internet and pages will just stop loading. Following this, any already-opened application I click on will freeze, including Finder. If I try to open any new applications, the icon will bounce over and over in the Dock but never open. If I close my web browser and try to reopen it, it tells me that there is already a copy of the browser running and I cannot open another one. The only way to remedy this I have found is to hold down the power button and shut off the computer. Once I turn the computer back on, everything runs normally. I originally though it may have been my web browser (Google Chrome) so I recently switched to Firefox, and the problem still persists. It is extremely annoying.

I am looking to upgrade the current memory in my iMac. It has 512 (2x256) and it says it supports up to 1gb total. However, i have been searching all over this forum seeing if it is possible to have more. Like if I added a 1gb sodimm to get it to 1.2gb. I have seen very little on this as I have searched these threads. Also, is the upgrade in memory really going to help me out? I really notice the slowdown in iMovie. I have been watching the activity monitor and even though the cpu can get up to 100%, the free memory will be down to 4 mb. oh ya, I am running 10.3.9. When i update the os, with a clean install, will i see any improvements without additional memory? Or will i need more memory just to keep tiger or possibly leopard running good?

Our old powermac died recently (G5 2.5ghz x2), the cost to repair was quoted at 850$, which is roughly the same price as a new Mac-Mini 2.0ghz. Just wondering how the performance of new mini compares to the 4 year old powermac? A new powermac is out of the question right now.

For the CPU of the new minis, I can choose between 2.0GHz (intel Core 2 Duo P7350) and 2.26GHz (P8400). I wonder if I can replace the CPU myself (now or later) e.g. by the P8700 which runs at 2.53 GHz. I heard that this is impossible. Even upgrading from 2.0GHz to 2.26GHz is said to be impossible. I was told that if I want the 2.26 GHz CPU, I have to decide so before I buy, as it is not possible to upgrade later.
