OS X :: Keep Top Sites While Using Private Browsing?
Dec 15, 2010
I like to use private browsing. Why is it after I set up my top sites and then use private browsing, if I open another window (command, n), I'll lose my top sites. Before I leave top sites, I make sure that I'm done editing and that the thumb tack is blue and not black which I'm told saves the sites. So what's going on? I'm actually at the Apple Store and the trainer at my personal projects sessions just doesn't know why this doesn't work. Anyone know how I can keep my top sites while I use private browsing?
In Safari 5, cookies from private browsing session aren't being erased after closing the private browsing session. The private session pages don't appear in the history, so that much works; I have no idea if the cache is being emptied. Is anyone else having this problem? I've uninstalled the add-ons I had (ClickToFlash, Glims) and turned off the new Safari Extensions, so I'm ruling them out as the problem.
MacBook Pro 13" 2.4 GHz (early 2010), Mac OS X 10.6.4, Safari 5.0 (6533.16)
I have tried the "dscacheutil -cachedump -entries Host" terminal command but it just comes back with "-bash: dscacheutil: command not found". Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong or if there is a different command to use? I have a Mac laptop if that means anything, it's about 1.5 years old!
It appears as though there may be some suspicious activity occurring on the family computer. Firstly, "private browsing", "reset safari" and "empty cache" all appear under the edit menu in safari. I don't recall having seen them earlier, does this mean they have been recently used or is it part of the standard menu? Also, in the internet history whilst no webpages can be found there are some obscene jpegs. Images found in the internet history, have they been deliberately viewed or is it possible that they find their way there behind the scenes?
I'm trying to create an automator that will open safari, enable private browsing, go to my site, and log myself in. The problem is I need a terminal command line that will ensure private browsing is enabled.
I have a browsing habit that is incompatible with marriage and having Private Browsing available is a very big temptation. I was able to remove Private Browsing from Safari 3 but am unable to find out how to remove it from version 4. I have Snow Leopard and have installed Xcode Tools. It seems that most of the browsers are starting to add Private Browsing to their software.
I usually use the private browsing feature on safari but sometimes when I google something it shows near the searches how many visits I've made and when, even when Ive used private browsing. how do i cleat this kind of history?
I've noticed that my kids have been using private browsing a lot lately and i don't like that, I want to know if there's any way to take it off the menu, that and the ''view all history'' button, because they can also erase sites seen there. I tried xcode, but after downleading a Safari 4.0.5 I can't use it anymore, look: Xcode doesn't work with Firefox either and I don't know what to do.
Purchased myself a 27" iMac from Apple about a week ago. Everything is all good and fine - except my private browsing on Safari doesn't seem to work.It works fine on my Macbook, but for some reason on my iMac, when I turn it on, it works - but then when the computer restarts and is used again, it's turned off
Is there a way via an add-on or setting to have Safari perform a "Reset Safari" when you close Safari and/or have "Private Browsing" enabled when you a launch Safari? Similar to the functionality that FireFox has where you can clean up automatically after your session using "Clear Private Data." In FireFox there is a preference for it but I didn't see anything like that in Safari - leading me to believe there might be a hack or add-on that will do it.
Before Yosemite I never had a problem with using Private Browsing window in Safari - now it seems to be designed to log you out as much as possible- but that's another question..I'm having is that private windows block the top of the screen so it's impossible to login to certain web sites (PayPal, Facebook..), basically any site who's login is at the very top of the screen. It will work just fine in regular safari window.

The symptoms is: The flash videos are only display with a full red bar and nothing happen, no video no sound nothing. The Flash player was upgrade with 22.214.171.124. before safari 5.1.7. I have an iMac with SL, and a Macbook with SL too. However after I upgraded safari 5.1.7 the flash videos are not display correctly, (only videos). The same happen in both computers. I need to tell you that I follow all the possible recommendations that I founded in internent. I uninstall flash pug-in many times. I restore both. I switch many buttons and options like "reset safari", "empty cahe", "block pop-up windows", "enable java-script", "enable java". I turn off and on the firewall. I switch all the options in the flash player plug in preferences. And nothing. I turn on and off the plug ins. In fact I tried all the possibilities in the preferences menus from the programs.
In one occasion I had a glimpse of functionality for only one hour without problems after I reinstall safari from the Apple website, but only worked until I turned off the computer. The next day was the same problem. After I fought with safari 5.1.7 and the plug-in flash player 126.96.36.199. Now I noticed something wired, only when I switch the "Private browsing" option in safari is when the videos are displayed correctly.
I manually put a couple of sites into the top sites area.. but then even after 'pinning' them into the sites area, they disappear when i re open safari.. it's really bugging me. can anyone help me out with this?
I've been a PC user for 20 years, but thinking of switching to an Imac. My main concern before plunging in is with regards to data protection - particularly if I have to send the Imac in for repair. On my PC, I can control what part I want to replace, and I never send a harddrive in for repair. I'm paranoid about data privacy.
But if I buy an Imac, removing the harddrive violates the warranty. And if my Imac refuses to bootup, I can't wipe the drive before sending in for repair. Will the apple repair center be willing to remove the harddrive and return it to me before starting repair?
I ran a browser variability test at This website here are the results

Dose anyone know how to make safaris PB feature private ?
So my computer has about 4gb of free space on the hd. I leave for a few minutes, come back and see in the finder that there is 0KB! It also won't let me do anything, not even quit itunes because it says it can't save the library file. It's weird because the computer was idle, I'm pretty sure the only open app was iTunes.
So I restart the computer but nothing has changed. So I transfer a bunch of files to an external HD then delete them. So I now have free space. I want to know where the space went though? I opened OmniDiskSweeper to see what's taking up space and I see this folder called "private" that I've never seen before. Where is this located and could this be the space that disappeared? I included a screenshot so you can see where the folder is.
I know this has been asked before and I asked it once too, but I don't understand all these technical terms and nothing I did worked. I've now got over 20GB in this "private" folder as I saw in Disc Inventory X. I cannot find this folder anywhere when I search and I cannot delete it.
I have accidentally deleted the Private folder in the root of the HD. Now OSX will not boot. The folder is still sitting in my Trash folder and I would like from the Boot CD Terminal to copy back from the trash to the Macintosh HD/ location.
I realised a big chunk of my hard drive space missing and couldn't find where it had gone. I downloaded Disk Inventory and ran the program. It shows that i have a folder called 'Private' within this are three sub folders:
Var Log Asl
I have searched for all of these and can't find them on my hard drive anywhere. Can anyone tell me what these are, if I can delete them and if so how do I find them.
