OS X :: Slow Typing In Mail - How To Know About It
Nov 16, 2010
Mail basically is running alright, but when I type in the body of a message, it takes forever. Typing is fine in other programs, so I am at a loss for figuring this out. Since I only have been back in the Mac environment for a bit over a month, I am struggling to relearn the ins and outs of maintaining my iMac.

After upgrading to Yosemite, I am experiencing slow typing response in Mac Mail. Sometimes, Mail is one or two words behind my typing. I have to stop and let it catch up occasionally.Â
I have call Applecare three times. They had me repair permissions and repair my disk in Disk Utilities. That didn't work. They also did the repair in safe mode. Likewise, that didn't work.

I love firefox, but it is so slow. Slow in everything, loading, typing, posting. I finally went to Safari which is better but I love firefox and hate to give it up. I have done searches, it appears to be a problem, but most of the fixes are either over my head or for a pc. My computer is not the fastest but Firefox is unbearable. A while ago, my MacBook Pro started to randomly open launchpad in "Slow motion" when I am typing. Ever since then, my computer has been acting quite sluggish, and once my iTunes library disappeared. (Luckily I keep a backup, but that seems to have resolved itself.) I do not think that the opening launchpad thing is a hardware issue, mainly because of all of the other symptoms. One thing that I'm worried about is it might be the Flashback trojan, but I have not downloaded anything that would appear to be an Adobe update, and I did get the Java update. I am just curious about what it sounds like.

I just installed microsoft word....it is a little slow...i.e. the typing shows up a split second after i type, instead of instantaneous...I think because of the spelling/grammar checking. anyone else witness this?

Over the last few months, it seems my imac has gotten really slow. Like when I am typing, often there will be a few seconds between the time I punch the keys on the keyboard and the time they actually show up on the screen. Sometimes I can get four or five words in before the actually start to populate the screen. Even clicking on an inactive window can take a couple of seconds--very annoying for workflow. I only have 1GB of RAM, but usually all I am running is Firefox (3.5.12) or Safari, and then sometimes excel.
When I open the activity monitor I notice that sometimes Firefox is using 600mb to 1gb of real memory. Could that be the reason?

i was using Apple mail 3.0 successfully on my old MBP which was running Leopard. I used POP to access and use my gmail account. I upgraded to a newer MBP but now am running snow leopard and apple mail 4.0 Unfortunately the migration assistant failed to bring across my data to the new computer and had to do it manually. I was unsuccessful in getting Mail 4.0 to set up a POP account for gmail as I had done with the older operating system's version of Mail.
I was successful with setting up IMAP (which i like less for specific reasons that I wont go into). However, even with following gmail's on line instructions, the sending of mails is temperamental. Sometimes emails get send, but almost always they sit in the "outbox" for minutes or hours, and it seems to be quite random as to when the emails are successfully sent. I cannot understand this. Usually the sending fails several times where it gives me the option to "try again" which I usually chose. I have SSL checked and am using port 933. I am using smpt.gmail.com:username@gmail.com has anybody else had similar difficulties and were they able to overcome them

Mail is often very slow to get mail on my Imac. Much faster on phone. Sometimes I have to take it on and off line to get it to new mail. At times I have had to force quit the mail program and restart. Additionally, I often have to move the same mail several times to get it filed where I want. Are there fixes or is it time to move to another email client? I have used mac mail for many years and have thousands of emails filed.

I've noticed a problem with my mac mail. The number 1 over the mail icon comes up to show I have a new mail, but upon clicking into mail to see it, who it is from and the subject line is there, but it takes 20-30 seconds for the mail to download. This is happening across all email accounts, coming from a mixture of imap and pop accounts. I've also noticed in my activity monitor that my amount of free system memory is very low (dropping to under 50 meg when I have things open). If I install more system memory, do you think this will solve the email problem.

Alright, I'm wondering what makes my internet go slow when my dad is uploading something or sending an e-mail.According to Speedtest.net I have a download speed of 2.1MB/s and upload of 0.03MB/s (megabytes not megabits).I just did a test while dad was uploading and got very similar results if not the same, except it said my ping was 4302 ms, compared to 26 ms I got from re-running the test after the upload was finished. I'm pretty sure the server was the same, I think I would have noticed if it wasn't.Does anyone know why it goes slow, I don't really understand it, although I imagine it has something to do with the high ping but I don't understand why or how it effects it.

Everytime I go to print an e-mail in Mail 5.2 or Safari 5.1.5 on Mac OS 10.7.3 on my Mac Book Pro 15 inch 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7, the beach ball comes up and spins for approximately 1 minute and 25 seconds.  After this time, the print dialgoue box comes up. It prints immediately after I press print in the print dialogue box. This issue happens only with these two programs, regardless of any printer I use to print. I have reset the printer system, I have rebuild the mail. I have called Apple, which led to a developer support, submitting the info, etc, but have not heard back from them. Printing is fine from all other applications, including Parallels running Windows and Quickbooks running on Windows.Â

Is anyone else having problems with iCloud mail at the moment? For the past few days it has been VERY slow to update, sometimes failing altogether. Yesterday, I deleted a number of emails, only to find them restored after a later update. I am beginning to think about no longer using iCloud mail and shifting my main email account to my gmail account - it works every time!

When I launch Mail app, my mac starts running ridiculously slow. I get the spinning ball after almost every click.Just switching between safari tabs can take 1/2 minutes. In activity monitor it is showing 118% is being used by mail when it is running which hogs the entire CPU effectively. When I quit the application through activity monitor it quits, however if I try to quit (CMD Q) or force quit the application nothing happens. Also when I try and shut mail stops the shut down.Â

Since installing Yosemite Mail has slowed to a crawl with a spinning beach ball for 30 seconds or more each time I select a message or a mailbox. I had a very large (about 5GB) mail file that I have used as a filing cabinet for years. The only way i could speed it up was to very tediously delete thousands of stored emails and mailboxes (after copying the old mail file to an external disk). I had this problem on 2 MacBook Pros (1 Retina) and a MacBook Air. I also have a MacPro (2013) and did not have the problem on that machine although I do not keep large mail files on it.Â
In addition Safari takes 10-15 seconds (sometimes longer) to display every web page. Perhaps it is because the preferences no longer let me select display as received and it is always waiting for the full page do download. If that is the problem Apple should put it back the other way - many web pages have the bulk of the information available immediately with some stuff taking a while to finish but the info I need is in the first batch.Â
I have also had problems with Safari quitting with the error report window for no apparent reasons several time a day. In general I find Yosemite (10.1.1 now) is starting to be as quirky and un-user friendly as Windows - it is a giant step backwards!

For one, my Mail is extremely slow to type...it would probably take a good 2 minutes for what I just wrote to show up on my message. Another thing, when I click once on my mouse it acts twice...which is really annoying because it opens absolutely everything that I click on. I've adjusted the mouse settings and still, no change. Lastly, it will close boxes for no apparent reason...if I'm viewing a folder, all of a sudden the folder will minimize without me clicking on minimize...I don't know what is going on here or why it's acting up all of a sudden. I use my Mac for work, so it's making it very difficult for me to actually get any work done!

We have a new Exchange 2010 server set up in our office. We upgraded from 2003 specifically to support using Apple Mail.Â
We are now connecting our various iPhones, iPads, and Macs (all running Lion) to the Exchange server and we see the iPhones and iPads sync very quickly with the server, but Apple Mail on the Macs seems to be throttling itself to about 70KB/s. The iPhone and iPads synced in minutes, but the Macs have been spinning for 3 hours now, never going above 70KB/s of download speed.Â
It's clearly not the server or the network slowing things down as the iPhones and iPads are connected over the same network.

I have suddenly, since Friday 2 March, experienced very slow connection to one of my ISP's mailservers. Emails without attachments work ok'ish (a little "hesitantly"), emails with attachments of moderate sizes (eg. +/- 500 KB) download/upload extremely slowly and most of the time fail. I have asked my ISP, who are generally helpful, and they have tested the mailserver and can find nothing wrong. So, here we go: The problem is both for ethernet and wireless. The problem is for one account only. I have a different account with the same ISP, but on a different mailserver, which works absolutely fine. Two different Macs have the same problem. The other PCs with different ISP's accounts work fine.Router is working fine with good internet connection and email via one of the two accounts works fine.It is not a problem on my computer (since it is the same issue for two machines). Both run OSX 10.6.8I have tried both Entourage and Outlook on both machines; same problem everywhere - one account works, the other doesn't (properly).I have tried with my iPhone, using the same wireless connection and same account details, and it downloads emails with attachments speedily - emails that failed to download on the MBP/Outlook.I have tried one of the machines (a MacBook Pro) at home with a different wireless connection but to the same mailserver and it works fine there! This happened last Friday and no settings have been changed locally for months. My conclusion is (but may be wrong): The router is fineThe macs are fineThe email clients are fineGeneral connection to internet and mail is fineThe mailserver is probably fine But a connection between one mailserver account and the two macs has suddenly gone wrong. It is almost as if there is a setting on either the mailserver saying "I don't like that connection to that place, I will slow it down." or somewhere in this place saying "I don't like that account on that mailserver, I will slow it down."  The question then is:Which network setting is so specific that it can be this selective?

My mail is running very slowly and it looks as if I have more messages saved and coming in that I believe I actually have. I also have a message that reads "connection logging enabled" at the top that seemed to appear about a month ago and I don't know what it means. Any reason for mail running slow, mail messages duplicating multiple times and for trash not emptying as it should?

I'm happily using my new 24" iMac, but I've run across a little problem this evening. I was trying to send a 225mb file as a mail attachment through my Gmail account using Mail. When I go to send the file, Mail crashes and disappears. This happened a couple times, so I logged directly into Gmail and sent the file through the web browser. Now the system is hung up 'sending' in the Gmail browser, and Finder has become very sluggish (slow response to clicks, errors printing, etc). Can the iMac and/or Mail handle sending files of this size?

So recently my mac has decided to hide my Cursor/Pointer while typing, it doesn't really bother me much when i am browsing the web, But when i start to talk to my friends online then i have problems.
So when I'm typing to a friend the IM ( MSN ) hides the cursor so after i finished typing and press Enter then the message will send then realizing i have made a mistake or want to add a quick message on to the IM then i must have to click on the type box again because it dont keep init for some reason.
So i have looked in System Preferences and can't find nothing to turn this off.

My imac starts typing by itself it usually starts in safari and if I open any other program it will continue in that. It also continuously toggles rapidly between items in the lists of drop down menus. Other weird stuff happening too like if I put it to sleep and re-login it will delete any text I try to put in the password box.

I am trying to see if anyone else has this problem. I am a two finger typer, but type fairly fast. I write a lot on my computer, every day. Generally, I look at the keyboard when typing. I also tend to type hard, but this issue is there even when I try to type softer.
My problem is that I'll type a paragraph and then look up to proof my text and a significant number of characters are missing. This has continued with three different systems and multiple keyboards (wired and wireless). Apparently, the problem is me, but I am still fascinated by this matter.
I spent a tremendous amount of wasted time adding characters that are missing. Given I type with two fingers, AND I stare at the keyboard, I cannot fathom how so many characters do not appear.
So far on this posting, I have had to add five missing characters. Just imagine how many corrections I have to make in a year. This single problem must cost me days of wasted time.
If you have any suggestions, I am open to anything. I have even thought of filming my typing to assure I hit each key, but could not get a good camera angle. I would need to use at least two cameras.
