OS X :: Slow Internet (imac, 10.5.7, 1.8 GHz PowerPC G5, Memory 2GB DDR SDRAM)?
Aug 26, 2009
My internet is very slow! It's not the service as I have 2 other computers who run very fast on wireless. I just replaced the ethernet cable which didn't do anything. My computer itself isn't that slow although it isn't fast either. It's a imac, 10.5.7, 1.8 GHz PowerPC G5, memory 2GB DDR SDRAM.
I thought about switching it to wireless,I'm not sure as I don't see it on the top toolbar and I'm not sure how to set it up if my machine actually has it. Could my router be bad if my other computers are good?

I recently bought a Power Mac G5 with 3 20" cinema displays, each with their own video card. I've since stopped using one and it sped up some. But even with the most simple tasks, it is hella slow and freezes sometimes. If I just have Firefox and iTunes open, it runs slow and the fans kick in overdrive. The main video card is an ATI Radeon x800 with 256 RAM and the other is a 9200 with 128 RAM. how to free up my RAM and speed it up?

I have an iMac G5 with 1 GB of RAM. It has got really slow lately. I've used Mac Keeper to get rid of uneeded files, etc., but it is still really slow, especially when viewing or working with video. Will adding RAM facilitate?

There may be an easy explanation for this, but for someone who is new to Mac's entirely, it's proving to be difficult. I recently acquired a powerbook g4 15" powerpc 1.5ghz with 1gb ram and 80gb hd. I'm a computer technician at work, go figure, but only for pc's. The wireless works flawlessly on the mac at work, t1 connection. When I arrive home, my wireless is so slow and sometimes doesn't even work.
I have comcast cable internet, which is really fast on my desktop and two pc laptops. So with my comcast, I have their issued cable modem and a linksys wireless router. Any thoughts as to why this is so slow? Takes me like, 5 minutes to load facebook. I have Mac OSX 10.5 +, not sure what exact version. I think 10.5.6? I'm not connected to anyone elses internet and my DNS are the same on my PC.

I've had this used laptop since last August, and up until last month the internet was super awesome and fast and lovely. Then, I'm alnost positive, the last update was like some big Adobe THING, and it seemed like soon after that my Airport connection was very low (like 1 or 2 out of 4 bars are full) in comparison to before, and my internet refused to load anything.
After googling around, I have:
-Updated the firmware on my wireless router (Linksys wrt54gs)
-Gone into my network settings and changed my dns servers to the OpenDNS.com ones, and also to the 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2 ones.
-completely restarted my router
-changed the password on my router just in case someone was stealing my wireless connection?
None of these things have made any change. I have to click the reload button about 50 times, (no joke) in order for a page to at least halfway load and it's just ridiculous. Anyway, I'm not sure what is wrong or if I need a new router, but my desktop PC works fine (internet-wise) and my brother has a Gateway laptop that is running Windows XP that he also says suddenly got slow internet performance right around the time mine did. I'm running OSX tiger 10.4.2 (heh, i'm pretty sure)

What's agood way to test the ethernet port on my G5 Power Mac SP 1.8G? I have other Macs on the network.
My wife complains that the internet is slow & can't stream video.Th is computer is wired to a gigbit switch, then to 100 Mbit switch then to the router. I have a 24" iMac connected to same gigibit switch and have no problem with the internet speed. When I try to send a large file between my iMac & the G5, the transfer is slow. I checked in System Profiler and both computers detect the ethernet speed as 1000 Mbit (1gigabit or something like that).
Ideas on how to resolve? Gigbit ethernet cards that will work in the G5?I don't have Airport on the G5.

I just got a new MacBook Pro, but my wife uses my old 1.25GHz Alum. PowerBook. My MB pro flies, but unfortunately, the wireless ethernet on my old PB is slow as hell. I've got 11+GB of free space left on my hard drive and Safari or Firefox are the only applications I have open. I also have a cable internet connection with wireless through my 1st Gen Airport Express, yet it's still slow.

maybe I haven't been paying attention but my HD seems to have a misc 50-150 GB of stuff on there that didn't seem to be there before, nor can I account for what it is. I have opened up the HD and gotten "info" on all folders there. The total amount of storage does not equal what the HD tells me I have. I get "info" on the HD and it says 300 GB used (20 GB left). The folders and size are as follows as listed on my HD:
Users: 154.46 GB
World of Warcraft (ashamed faced): 21.28 GB
Applications: 3.68 GB
Library: 6.34 GB
System: 4.49 GB
Limewire: 49.4 MB
Incompatible Software (?): 1.6 MB
Developer: 165 KB
iTunesShut: 479 KB
For a grand total of: 190.39 GB or so (not including the 50 mb or 644 kb) I'll include what is on my desktop as well (I assume it is already included on the list above but just incase).........

i've got a 6 year old 12 inch powerbook G4 1.33 ghz that has internet speeds around 5177kbps, but overall its a bit dated sooo I wanted something a bit more new. I recently picked up a white 2.4 ghz Intel Core 2 Duo Macbook, HOWEVER the internet wireless speeds on it is dismal in comparison. I'm getting download speeds on average around 405kbps and upload speeds are pretty much non-existant! I've matched both of them to the same internet settings and they are both running 10.5.8. So again I'm stumped and if anybody can give me some idea as to what to do, Id greatly appreciate it!

my imac has been running very slow lately and i don't know why. i'm not a man of great knowledge when it comes to computers and in fact this is my first imac i've ever had. (although i loved until now.....) i need to know what i can do to make it run faster. it seems to only be a problem when i'm on the internet although i could be wrong. (i know it is not just a connection issue because my ipod touch is running off my wireless much faster than my computer.

Just picked up a 24" iMac on clearance and the Internet seems to hang up and just be a bit slower in general compared to my 4yr old MBP. I can't really get a cable to it so I'm using a Belkin N1 router. Is there anything I can do to see if it's the router or possibly the iMac?

I just upgrades my iMac to snow leopard. I did not see this problem right away but about a few weeks later. My computer is really, really slow when I surf the internet. But it is not slow consistently. Sometimes pages will load immediately and other times it will tell me I can't open the page due to the server not being found? I really don't know where to start looking for a problem.
Could I have a virus?
Could the Airport just be getting old and starting to fail?
Do I have too much info on the computer already and that is effecting something?
Could it be the Snow Leopard?
Could someone hacked into the modem and is jogging the bandwidth? ( I don't have the wifi locked but live in a pretty rural area)

my imac duo core, 2ghz, 2gig ram started slowing down a few months ago. it is connected by airport extreme router. the airport signal shows half of what it used to be but nothing has changed from before. if fact i brought my macbook pro right next to it and that has full strength and fast browsing. speed tests at the same site shows 400kbs-800kbs for the i mac, and over 2mbs for the macbook pro. in the same location and 30 seconds apart. both are running os 10.5.6

I am looking to upgrade the current memory in my iMac. It has 512 (2x256) and it says it supports up to 1gb total. However, i have been searching all over this forum seeing if it is possible to have more. Like if I added a 1gb sodimm to get it to 1.2gb. I have seen very little on this as I have searched these threads. Also, is the upgrade in memory really going to help me out? I really notice the slowdown in iMovie. I have been watching the activity monitor and even though the cpu can get up to 100%, the free memory will be down to 4 mb. oh ya, I am running 10.3.9. When i update the os, with a clean install, will i see any improvements without additional memory? Or will i need more memory just to keep tiger or possibly leopard running good?

Hi there, a couple of easy questions I hope.
What is the simplest was to increase the memory on a 10GB Imac G3. 9.7GB are used up and there isn't much I can delete to free up space. It is a friend's computer, she is not mac savvy.
Also, I am considering rebooting the system as there is an account on there with a forgotten password and the original administrator password is long forgotten. What would be the best way to go about doing this? I have 10.4 os discs, with extra memory would this work ok?
Thanks in advance.

I recently bought a 27'' iMac (3.2 GHz Intel Core i3, OSX10.6.4) and all was fine and dandy until yesterday when my internet connection suddenly got very slow. It takes forever to load pages, if they load at all. The rest of the iMac is fine as before, which leads me to conclude this is an internet issue. I cleared the cache and browsing history in Google Chrome and no improvement. I tried using Safari and Firefox and they were slow too.
I also have a MacBookPro (2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, OSX10.6.4), so I checked the internet speed on that and it was normal. Both MBP and iMac are connected via an Airport Express. I searched various forums and threads for a solution, but I know very little when it come to these things so I quickly got stuck in technical jargon. I've tried to change the DNS server settings (first to 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2, then to 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220) but this has not helped.

I got a white iMac G5 about a year ago. Everything has been working fine until recently when I started to notice that its REALLY SLOW. What I mean by this is that whenever I try to open an application, load my widgets or basically do anything, it is really slow and Im seeing A LOT of beach balls. Just as i started typing in the title for this tread, it gave me a beachball. This computer is not that old so it should still be running smoothly.
Does anyone know why this is happening?
btw: I have 1GB of RAM, but it still operate really slow when I only have a few application open.

The iMac G3 is a 2002 model, has a 600 mghz processor and 1 GB RAM. It does not have an AirPort wireless card and Apple no longer manufacturers an AirPort card for this machine (which I bought used), so I bought a USB wireless adapter that appears to pick up a pretty strong signal from my Verizon FiOS router, strongest of course when parked next to the router. Unfortunately, I am only able to generate 3.5-4.2 mbps download speed no matter how close I am to the router, whereas the machine can consistently download at 12-15 mbps with a direct ethernet connection. The FiOS router can download at speeds in excess of 20 mbps. Is there some setting I'm overlooking that can improve the wireless connection speed or am I going to have to settle for wired use only?

i just recently bought a iMac G4 in good condition for $175 on Craigslist.I was on a budget so i couldn't afford to spend $1000 on a Macbook.I'm not too familiar on Macs since its my first one.But it seems to be a PowerPC, It's running Tiger OS, and the base of the Mac looks like a lamp.I'm sure you guys know what a iMac G4 is.So are there any ways of speeding up this thing? Is it slow because of its age?Because it seems to be in pretty good shape to me.I did a restore on it and it was still slow.I just need help on improving the performance.

I have a macbook pro and have recently noticed that when initially loading any of, google chrome, firefox or safari it takes a very long time for the internet to load the webpages.
It says that there is a full wireless connection but will not load the webpage.
Once the webpage has finally loaded after about a minute, subsequent browsing is as fast as can be expected upon my broadband connection, loading pages in <1s.
However the problem reappears whenever I open a new window, or anything else that might use the internet such as the app store, itunes or apple software update.Â

Is there a way to tell which one is slow, if anything is going slow? I have an extremely old PC which is normally ok for most things, but gets bogged down if I am doing too many things.I was so annoyed with our national real estate site after they changed the format that I wrote a letter once a long time ago.. and I was ready to let them have it again, listing all the reasons why it is so bad and so much worse than the original.
Today for the first time, I accessed the site (mls.ca) using my new iMac. It was like lightening speed, comparatively speaking.Wow, suddenly I knew why the mls people hadn't changed their new format. But then I started going to other sites.. like airmiles.ca for example, and it was slow as heck... and stalling.. etc.
How would I be able to tell whether it is an internet slowness or the computer being slow?

Hey guys, i got an old Powerbook that the whole family use to surf the net. I notice its been super slow lately. Ive never had a problem with this notebook, I've only done 2 reinstall in the time ive owned it. I recentluy did another one, and notice its still slow, loading websites is slow, cant watch movies on it. This is a notebook i use to do photoshop and illustrator work on.
Do you think its just its time? I think it could be the hard drive or memory, is there any type of diagnostic i can do to find out what the problem is?

So I have a Mac Pro, quad core xeon with 12 GB of RAM.Â
I have noticed that when I watch videos, usually from YouTube but elsewhere also, the video is very choppy and the overally computer performance becomes laggy. I thought it was Flash, so I deleted flash and switched my youtube preferences to HTML 5. No change.Â
So I bust out activity monitor, and it doesn't seem to be a CPU issue, but I note that the VM size is 200-400 GB. That seems excessive. I've about 80 GB available free space on my startup drive; I can move some stuff to another drive to create more free space if that's the issue. But is that much VM normal in 10.7? It seems like a lot.

I just installed 8 GB Crucial memory for my 13" MacBook Pro (Late-2011; 2.8 Ghz). I immediately noticed scrolling on safari was jumpy or skipping. It is like this in other applications as well. Even zooming in/out of pdf's and using iphoto. I only purchased this laptop in Feb, and this bothers me. I tested using the Geekbench app. Every benchmark was about equal or much higher except for Processor Integer Performance, more specifically "Image Decompress multi-threaded scalar." It went from 138.3 down to 134.3 Mpixels/sec. Do I have lemon memory? I would almost rather go back to the 4 GB if this laggy performance is a continual issue. One of the things I love about Mac's is now becoming irritating.
