PowerPC :: 3GB Ram Is Running Super Slow And Memory Usage Is Almost Maxed?

Apr 27, 2008

I recently bought a Power Mac G5 with 3 20" cinema displays, each with their own video card. I've since stopped using one and it sped up some. But even with the most simple tasks, it is hella slow and freezes sometimes. If I just have Firefox and iTunes open, it runs slow and the fans kick in overdrive. The main video card is an ATI Radeon x800 with 256 RAM and the other is a 9200 with 128 RAM. how to free up my RAM and speed it up?

PowerPC :: IBook G4 Maxed Out And Running Slow?

Sep 27, 2009

Hi Everyone
I have an iBook G4 with 800MHz and 512 MB. I understand this is the max I can run this on. I really cannot afford a new one now and wondered if there was a way to increase the memory at all or get it to run faster. I deleted programs I do not use but it is still slow.

PowerPC :: IMac G5 - Non-Responsiveness, CPU Usage Maxed Out

Aug 7, 2008

I have an iMac G5 (Ambient Light Sensor) that runs Leopard pretty slowly, even with 2GB of RAM. Sometimes, it's a pretty severe lag: Type a sentence, twiddle your thumbs, bam, it's all inputted at once. Sometimes, the whole system is non-responsive for 60-120 seconds, before, bam, accepting all your key- and mouse-strokes at once.

Activity Monitor also reports extremely high CPU-usage. I've been using it for a couple of hours this morning and it's been maxed-out or nearly maxed-out basically the whole time.

There aren't any processes that appear to be hogging resources. Sometimes, it's finder / time machine that's using the most. Sometimes it's Safari or Mail.

I'm open to the possibility that it's just time to upgrade, but I was wondering if the forums had any suggestions on how to troubleshoot or reclaim some CPU cycles.

Intel Mac :: Its Running Super Slow

Jun 16, 2012

Got a 21.5 inch iMac desktop summer of 2010. I think it is the base model. All other info I can't get to on "about my mac" because my Mac is running like frozen molasses.

Anyway, last few days I thought the internet/Safari was running kind of slow. Pages would load, I'd get stuff done, but I just thought it was being glitchy. Then last night, my Mac would all out freeze. Rebooting took at least 5 minutes, and it doesn't matter what I try to use (chrome, firefox, safari), pages just won't load at all or freeze if I am able to make it to Google/Facebook/etc. Now the computer just sits at the blue screen part of the startup, and I had to just finally hard shutdown since I am not getting anywhere to even run a virus scan.

PowerPC :: IMac G5 Running SUPER Hot - How To Cool Down

Feb 17, 2010

I'm not sure what the issue is, but my 20" iMac G5 PowerPC is running so hot and smelling very "electrical".

I took the case off the back of it, and it seems where the G5 metal portion (not sure what it's called) is the source of all the heat. I can't really put my finger on it for more than a couple seconds because it's so hot.

Some recent things I've done was lube the fan, and replaced the RAM. I got the RAM per the Crucial ram identifier program that runs on the computer and lets you know which type to purchase.

OS X :: Slow Internet (imac, 10.5.7, 1.8 GHz PowerPC G5, Memory 2GB DDR SDRAM)?

Aug 26, 2009

My internet is very slow! It's not the service as I have 2 other computers who run very fast on wireless. I just replaced the ethernet cable which didn't do anything. My computer itself isn't that slow although it isn't fast either. It's a imac, 10.5.7, 1.8 GHz PowerPC G5, memory 2GB DDR SDRAM.

I thought about switching it to wireless,I'm not sure as I don't see it on the top toolbar and I'm not sure how to set it up if my machine actually has it. Could my router be bad if my other computers are good?

PowerPC :: Mac G5 Running Slow

Nov 24, 2008

My dad might give me his Power Mac G5 soon, and I've noticed it running very slow. It is running Leopard, it usually has about 20 apps open at a time, and has 512 MB RAM (lol). How much ram should I slap in there to make it take off like a rocket? If you have any good Power Mac G5 RAM deals, then link to them.

PowerPC :: CPU Maxed Out When Viewing Youtube

Dec 8, 2009

I just upgraded my powerbook 1.5ghz g4 to 2 gb of ram. It runs multiply applications fine now. The only thing that I'm still disappointed with is when I am viewing videos on youtube or elsewhere my CPU maxes out and the video is all chopping.

I know it's old (6 years!) and I need a new computer (which I'm thinking of getting the 27" iMac i5) but I feel as if it should be able to view videos on youtube without being chopping and maxing out the CPU...

PowerPC :: After 4 Years IBook Running Slow?

I have had my iBook for a good 4 years now. I have a 1.2ghz G4 ppc running Tiger and it is starting to run slow. I noticed that videos will now pause if something else is running or downloading. This never happened before. I was thinking about reinstalling my OS but would like to avoid that. Does anyone have this same problem or have any tricks to speed this up again?

PowerPC :: IBook Running Extremely Slow?

Nov 13, 2007

I was recently given a (supposedly) non-functional iBook. I reinstalled Tiger on it, and it did fine through the installation and initial startup. However, everything runs really, really slow. It will work normally for about 5 seconds, and then slow to a crawl. Opening system preferences just took 5 minutes. The beach ball shows up with nearly every click.

Anyone know what this means? Bad ram? Bad HD? It is the 14" 1.42 ghz model with 756 mb ram.

Oh yeah, the reason it was presumed dead was because the previous owner smacked it on something, and the LCD screen is bashed up. The rest of it seems physically fine, but it was subject to some sort of impact.

PowerPC :: Applications Running Very Slow On Power Mac G5?

Jul 8, 2008

I am having a little trouble with my MAC machine. Right now, it is running very slow, and I usually work on application including Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. When I opened a file there (file size could be large), I timed it, it took 12 minutes to open & 5 minutes to print. Such situation wouldn't be normal? I was wondering if I add more memory into the system, will it help at all (increase the response time overall)? Or do I need to tune up anything to reduce the loading time?

Here are the main configurations on the MAC machine:
-Power Mac G5
-Dual 2GH z Power PC GS (2.2)
-1 GB DDR SDRAM

PowerPC :: Clamshell IBook Running Slow?

Nov 2, 2008

My old clamshell iBook seems to be running very slow suddenly, I have to wait for typing to catch up with me and in this chatroom I go in, the chat screen keeps filling in and changing to same colour as background so I cant read what people have sent into room or and all buttons disappear until I run cursor over where they were!

It doesnt do this when I go in same room on iMac. It didnt used to do it on the iBook either! is it just getting old and needs replacing? Think mine was made in 2000, so is about 8 years old.

How do I do things like disk defragment or see how much hard drive and memory is been used? I wondered if it was maybe full?

PowerPC :: Ibook & Xtra Monitor Are Running Slow

Sep 27, 2009

I recently bought myself an Xtra monitor to hook up to my Ibook. I also used the hack to be able to split up the monitors to have full resolution of my new monitor.

but now my computer is running slower. somewhere in this forum I have found out that because of the hack my Ibook now has to work extra hard to be able to run on 2 monitors.

my question is, isn't there a way to be able to use my new monitor at full resolution and just shut of the original Ibook monitor? so my Ibook does not have to split up his memory? If I mirror them I Can't work on full resolution ...

somebody doing this?

Or... What do I do/buy/download that my Ibook can work on 2 monitors, but doesn't run slower.

PowerPC :: G5 Running Slow / Clicking On Anything Result Is Beachball

Jul 29, 2010

I recently acquired a PowerMac G5. To be honest, I wasnt even sure what it was, it was given to me, and I popped off the side panel and saw that is says G5. Anyway, it is used, but was given to me by a family member who runs an IT department. anyway, here is my issue.

This thing is VERY VERY SLOW. It boots up fine, in what I would call a normal speed, but as soon as everything appears to be ready, if I click on anything, I just get a beachball. My first assumption was that it was the hard drive, as I could hear a clicking/ticking sound, so I popped off the side panel and the sound is coming from the hard drive. I have read through alot of threads, and it seems that the general consensus is that if it is in fact the hard drive, then it would not boot up. The other thing that I read is that it could possibly be the logic board. Where exactly is the logic board located at?

OS X :: Internet Is Super Slow, Restart Fix It?

Nov 2, 2009

For at least 24 hours now the internet has been incredibly slow on my Alubook. By super-slow I mean 10-15 minutes to load MacRumors. I was sure it was my connection, until I today tried it on my iPhone on the same WiFi network. Took a couple of seconds to load.

So I then thought Safari might be the problem, but I found it was equally slow in Opera and Firefox.

Intel Mac :: Goes Super Slow And Doesn't See HD

Jun 14, 2012

But today when I started my iMac he first didn't show my external hard drive so I thought maybe my hard drive is broken so I tried instead of FireWire an USB cable but that didn't work either. So I tried connecting it to another computer and it worked so the problem must be with my Mac somewhere.

Now my Mac goes extremely slow and when I do 'Shut down' it takes minutes to get him powered off completely.

Now after a few minutes my Mac sees my Hard Drive again but the Hard Drive usual Icon isn't showing and when I open it to browse through it, it goes extremely slow. It looks like he is initializing everything on my hard drive, so I can't copy or open anything that is on it because it goes so slow.

OS X :: Memory Usage Not Going Past 70 Percent

Mar 20, 2010

My iMac has 4Gb RAM and this morning I had a problem with the blued process chewing up memory even though Bluetooth was off and I don't ever use it. After a bit of searching I found the probable cause. Anyway, whilst looking at the above issue, my system was really crawling but the memory usage wasn't over 70% and CPU usage was low too. The swap space usage had jumped up to 4Gb and all the time I was opening new Safari windows researching the issue. The system was getting more and more sluggish and the swap usage was growing but memory usage stayed at 70%. Why wouldn't it use the last 30%?

MacBook Pro :: Super Slow Wireless With New Router?

Jul 9, 2008

So I recently bought a Linksys WRT160N to replace an old router in my house. The network worked fine with the old router before it died... Browsing speed was great, download speed was great. Now that I have the WRT160N however, my network speeds have plummeted. And it's JUST my MBP... the rest of the computers in my house are Windows PCs and they are surfing away at supersonic speeds compared to what I'm getting on my MBP.

At first I thought it may be the wireless security (WPA) so changed it to WEP... no change. So then I just disabled it altogether... no change.

The Windows PCs are getting speed of about 2000 Kbps whereas I'm getting between 150 and 500 Kbps. I've already replaced the router once...

Is there anything I can do, or is this router just not going to play nice with Mac?

BTW- I have a 2.2 SR MBP

Playing with the Activity Monitor, I noticed that after awhile of using the computer, the green "free" memory piece of the pie becomes progressively smaller until it's almost gone. Does that mean I have no more free memory left? But I'm not running a lot of programs at once. Just Safari and iTunes, maybe Pages too.

I would expect plenty of free space and that used to be the case but no longer. I am tired of an unresponsive machine and spinning beach-balls.
