Is it possible to share the internet through a protected ethernet network on os x?.. and if so, how can I do it?
I'm well aware that I can make a protected wireless network.
For specific reasons, I needed to connect my Synology DS211 NAS to my iMac directly via its ethernet port. I discovered that if I share my wireless internet connection (coming from my cable modem/wireless router) from wireless to ethernet, then the NAS would get the IP stuff it needed to show up. did that, voila, NAS is acting like a glorified external hard drive. BUT, when I did that, I lost all internet connectivity on my iMac. Still have full wireless signal. preferences pane says I'm fully connected to my network with an IP address, but safari always fails to pull up any webpages, saying I'm not connected to the internet.As soon as turn off the ethernet PORT, it all starts working again. And to make it even crazier, I discovered that if I leave sharing my wireless internet via my ethernet port ON, but turn off the ethernet port (in pref pane), I can STILL access the NAS just like before. That makes no sense - I'm sharing my internet via a port I have turned off, but it works? Anyway, why would Iose my airport wireless internet connection when the ethernet port is on - configured manually?

So far I haven't been able to get an airport connected computer to share its connection via ethernet with another. Am I doing something wrong or is this not possible?

my imac connects to internet via airport. i want to share that internet with a win7 box via ethernet cable. i've turned on internet sharing in sys prefs but to no avail.
Recently got a Mac pro. However my room only has one network socket going into my router, this goes to ethernet port 1. Internet works fine, no issues. However my old desktop (that the MP replaced) can't get online now - no second network port from the router into the room the computers are in. I have a crossover cable that I've used to connect the 2nd MP ethernet port to the PC ethernet port. However I can't get internet access on the PC. If the PC and port 2 are on their own subnet (not the router/port 1 subnet) I can get file sharing going between the MP & PC, but cannot figure out how to get the router/MP/PC on the same subnet together using both ethernet ports of the MP. I have already tried enabling internet sharing under system prefs etwork, but it doesnt work. Network: Router (connected to internet) at 192.168.1.1 - connected to mac MP port 1 - 192.168.1.2 - works fine in connecting to the net MP port 2 - 192.168.255.1 - works in networking to PC for filesharing PC - 192.168.255.2 - works in networking to Mac for filesharing Any combination of 192.168.1.xxx for the MP port 2 and PC, they can't fileshare anymore and there is still no internet for the PC. Anyone know how to do this?

I go to Settings>Sharing from ethernet then to wifi. I name the network choose a channel then add a password from there I get this error message.

I'm renting a house for the week with several friends, and there's only one ethernet port. I figured I could plug one friend's Powerbook G4 into the ethernet, go into Sharing, turn on Internet Sharing, and then nearby computers could borrow the connection - this isn't working. The network doesn't even display on my other friend's powerbook. The little upwards arrow does not display ontop of the airport icon in the menubar, which I think it's supposed to, what's going wrong? I have "Personal Web Sharing" turned on under "Services," still no go...

i share a house with my brother, lucky me He got a PC with Vista in his room. I got a lovely imac in my room. He gets the broadband cable direct into his room. It averages 40 mbps download , 1.67 upload. We use a wireless Netgear router one thats suppose to handle N wireless and i pick the wireless up on the airport extreme in my imac. Unfortunately i only get about 12 mbps download , 1.20 upload, even though i'm only in the next room. We both play WOW online. It works so much better on his PC cos of the internet speed. Could I use a gigabit ethernet connection between the PC and imac, to share the internet and still play WOW independently?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to use my Wi-Fi to surf the internet and the Ethernet to log to my LAN Network. Both networks have access to the inernet through different ISP's and both have Wi-Fi modems. I set up the Wi-Fi as my preferred network followed by the Ehternet connection. That way I can surf the web through the ISP that I want and I can see the other computers on the LAN Network. However, when I try to use any of the Network printers of log to the server I can't connect. Can anyone tell me if I have to set up the connections in any particular way? I'm using Mac OS X Lion on a Macbook Pro 13". The server controlling the LAN is a Windows Server 2008 R2.

The last few days I've had a problem where the Internet network connection speed on my Power Mac slows to a crawl (about 1Mbps) and can only be fixed by re-starting the Mac which restores normal connexction performance for a while. The Internet connection runs at around 35-37Mbps and is routed via a BT HomeHub 3. The laptops which connect via WiFi don't show any slowdown in speed tests, only the Mac Pro, which is connected to the Hub via Ethernet. I've tried swapping between the two Ethernet ports on the Mac but it doesn't make any difference. The HomeHub has been in for about 5 months but this problem has only just started in the last week or so and the period for which the restart restores the network performance seems to be decreasing. Is there any way to reset network software, or some prefs I could delete? It's an early 2008 eight-core Xeon MacPro running 10.6.8, 8GB RAM.

So my Mac Pro is connected to the internet via an ethernet cable that is hooked up to my Powerbook G4 that has internet sharing enabled. The Powerbook G4 is connected to the internet via Airport. My main iTunes library is on my Mac Pro. I own an Apple TV and would like to be able to access the iTunes library from my Apple TV. My issue is, since the Mac Pro is connected via internet sharing, it seems like it doesn't get included as part of the network. It is connected to the internet, does everything perfectly fine. But searching for it from my Apple TV or from my iPhone remote app, it seems like it's not "part of the network." Anyway to make it included in the network when it's connected via internet sharing?

Now, when I attempt to internet share from my ethernet to computers using airport, they are able to see the network, connect to it, and put in the password, but internet fails to connect. I'm on a college network, but this shouldn't really matter since I currently have a network of this type working perfectly on an iMac running Tiger. The signal reads at full strength and behaves just like it should, just it doesn't allow an internet connection. No firewall is on.

Lately I've been using my schools wireless connection, and when I have AirPort on, I noticed that on Share tab, on Finder, I can see anothers PC's and Macs that are using the same wireless, I tried to enter on another mac and I saw some folders and documents, I was logged as a guest! So the question here is: when I'm using AirPort, with the osx firewall, can somebody see my folders like I saw the other?

I've got myself a random password (thanks to a generator website) and I'm not allowing the broadcast of the name (SSID).
I'm running OSX 10.5.8 on a Macbook Pro, and today I've been unable to connect to the internet via ethernet or wi-fi, unless I'm in safe mode. Then everything seems to work as it should, which makes me believe that this is a software issue rather than a hardware problem. I've tried making a new account with administrator priveleges, but that doesn't solve my issue. Does anyone have any advice on how I can connect to the internet under my normal user account, rather than in safe mode? I should note that I won't be able to get my hands on my repair CD or perform a clean install of OSX because that stuff is at home, and I'm in college. Also, I'm at a university and don't have a router. I just use the campus-wide wi-fi. Finally, my roommate has no problem accessing the internet in our room via ethernet or wi-fi, but I do. I didn't know about the Filevault problem so when I tried logging in, I got the error message and I am unable to login to my account (the only one on the computer). The support page says to make a root user, but how can I do that when I can't even log in to my account. I dont have a disc copy of Lion I can use to start up with, only a copy of 10.6.

I have a headless PC that is running Win7. I want to connect directly to it via ethernet for a nice Gigabit transfer rate. The PC will be relatively portable (I intend to customize a bag for it to fit in) so you can see why I can't just network it all with a router. Anyway, I've hit a few snags. The two computers simply don't see eachother when it comes to their ethernet adapters. Here is the network breakdown: Win7 has a wireless-N adapter (which connects fine to the wireless router here, finds my Macbook and can share files normally), and the ethernet adapter, which I've managed to successfull connect to another Win7 laptop fine, but will not see my mac.Macbook's wireless is also fine, but ethernet adapter, which I've never had problems with networking before, also does not see the Win7 machine.
The Win7 machine has a static IP, and I've even added the IP to the Network Pane WINS list in OS X along with the workgroup name, yet I try to ping/connect to the IP address and I get nothing.
I use a VNC application called TeamViewer to remotely view the headless PC, not sure if that is interfereing, but I don't believe it is. Wire is not a crossover, but I'm going to assume that this macbook's ethernet is switching it automatically. Do I need to disable the wireless adapters?
I've upgraded to Lion and everything's fine apart from one problem: using my iPad to access home shared iTunes content on my mac no longer works when my mac is asleep. That's a change in behaviour from Snow Leopard; I used to be able to sleep my mac and then wake it over wifi using either my iPad or iPhone to access all of my home shared libraries. The mac screen used to light up for ten seconds and then go dark again, but it served me the files.
Lion seems to go into a deeper sleep which it can't be woken from. If I attempt to wake my mac from my iPad within about ten minutes of putting my mac to sleep then home sharing seems to work and lets me use the home share libraries, but if I leave it any longer than that then the mac seems to fall into a coma and can't be woken. The weird thing is that I still see a "shared library" folder on my iPad, but when I click on it nothing happens. I think my Time Capsule is listening for wifi access and issuing the magic packet to the mac, but the mac just ain't listening.
I'm using a Time Capsule in bridge mode from an ADSL modem and I've accepted a TC firmware update last week and I'm on lion 10.7.3. I've tried using Ethernet to connect the mac to the TC (and temporarily disabled the wifi connection) but that still doesn't work. Also, note I'm NOT suffering from the problem that 10.7.3 seems to be giving a few other people - my mac reconnects to my wifi just fine when I wake it up manually. For the record, This was an upgrade, so there's still a tick in "wake on network" in power settings and home sharing on iTunes is still configured the same as it was before.
