May 9, 2012I'm wondering how would it be possible to make my MacMini (last generation) as an access point 802.11n.I have setup an internet share between Ethernet and WiFi, but the bandwith looks to be more 802.11g than 802.11n.

Mar 19, 2012I've been trying to connect over internet sharing from my Macbook pro to my i-pad 2 and am having some issues I hope someone can adress. I go to Settings>Sharing from ethernet then to wifi. I name the network choose a channel then add a password from there I get this error message.
Are you sure you want to turn on Internet sharing?
If your computer is connected to a network, turning on Internet sharing may affect the network settings of other computers and disrupt the network. Contact your system administrator before turning on Internet sharing.

Jun 17, 2014I have a Late 2013 MBP Retnia. I have WiFi access via a captured portal. I have other WiFi and Wired (Ethernet) devices that can not authenticate to a captured portal.
Question:
1) On the single MBP mentioned can I connect to the captured portal WiFi via one band (say 2.4) and then become a WiFI hotspot with the other band (say 5)?
2) On the single MBP mentioned can I connect to the captured portal WiFi via one band (say 2.4) and then share the Internet connection to the Thunderbolt Ethernet connector?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Can't Wake It Over Wifi (or Ethernet) Using IPad And Home Sharing
Feb 12, 2012I've upgraded to Lion and everything's fine apart from one problem: using my iPad to access home shared iTunes content on my mac no longer works when my mac is asleep. That's a change in behaviour from Snow Leopard; I used to be able to sleep my mac and then wake it over wifi using either my iPad or iPhone to access all of my home shared libraries. The mac screen used to light up for ten seconds and then go dark again, but it served me the files.
Lion seems to go into a deeper sleep which it can't be woken from. If I attempt to wake my mac from my iPad within about ten minutes of putting my mac to sleep then home sharing seems to work and lets me use the home share libraries, but if I leave it any longer than that then the mac seems to fall into a coma and can't be woken. The weird thing is that I still see a "shared library" folder on my iPad, but when I click on it nothing happens. I think my Time Capsule is listening for wifi access and issuing the magic packet to the mac, but the mac just ain't listening.
I'm using a Time Capsule in bridge mode from an ADSL modem and I've accepted a TC firmware update last week and I'm on lion 10.7.3. I've tried using Ethernet to connect the mac to the TC (and temporarily disabled the wifi connection) but that still doesn't work. Also, note I'm NOT suffering from the problem that 10.7.3 seems to be giving a few other people - my mac reconnects to my wifi just fine when I wake it up manually. For the record, This was an upgrade, so there's still a tick in "wake on network" in power settings and home sharing on iTunes is still configured the same as it was before.

Aug 25, 2009i share a house with my brother, lucky me He got a PC with Vista in his room. I got a lovely imac in my room. He gets the broadband cable direct into his room. It averages 40 mbps download , 1.67 upload. We use a wireless Netgear router one thats suppose to handle N wireless and i pick the wireless up on the airport extreme in my imac. Unfortunately i only get about 12 mbps download , 1.20 upload, even though i'm only in the next room. We both play WOW online. It works so much better on his PC cos of the internet speed. Could I use a gigabit ethernet connection between the PC and imac, to share the internet and still play WOW independently?

May 28, 2012After switching to a new provider and getting a new dsl modem (a fritz!box fon 7390) I tried to setup my homenetwork again. Now the weird thing is: my Mac Mini running OSX Lion Server doesn't seem to be able to connect to the internet over its ethernet port, only when using a WiFi connection...When it's connected with ethernet it can reach the dsl modem without any problems, but it can't ping/telnet or anything else through, only over WiFi... As long as I use the mini servers WiFi connection everything works fine, but that doesn't make any sense to me.I've checked the servers setting and the Fritz!box settings and I can't seem to find anything obvious. Of course I could just go on and use the WiFi connection...
ps: all the other computers can connect fine using either wifi or regular lan connection... I even tried the exact same cable with another laptop just to make sure...

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Ethernet Internet Connection Fails But Not WiFi?
Jun 29, 2012I am on a Mac Mini connected to the Net via a FON wireless router and Ethernet directly to my broadband modem. I have had problems with both the modem and an Airport Extreme, which eventually died, but I am back up again with the modem via the FON router.The odd thing is that I can't get Ethernet to work over a direct connection to the modem. Diagnostics tells me that the ISP and Internet fails. I can connect to the modem over Ethernet, however, change its settings etc. in my browser. There are solutions mentioned here involving changing the etc/authorization file, but wouldn't that also affect the WiFi if that was the problem?
In short, Ethernet connection to modem works. WiFi connection to FON router and then to the ISP and Internet works. But the Ethernet configuration does't go that last bit, it only works locally. Using that route, I can't connect to the outside world. I have restarted the modem, the computer etc., but that should not be the problem as both works over WiFi, using the same settings for the modem. How do I best troubleshoot this? I am getting an AirPort Express, perhaps it will work better with the modem that the computer itself, but I doubt it.

The MBP connects to iMac and shows files easy as...however I have enabled sharing on iMac when I choose Network it recognises the MBP but always says connecting and after a few minutes shows connection failed.

Since I've encountered some problems with backups because of intermittent wifi connection failures, I want to switch to a wired connection with an ethernet cable. I know I could fiddle with the wifi channels etc. but since the TC is just sitting next to my iMac anyway, I could profit from the higher bandwidth of a wired connection as well.Two questions:
1. What exactly do I have to do to make the switch? Are there any new settings I have to apply? Create a new network?
2. Will I still be able to use the wifi connection to get on the internet using my smartphone?

Feb 12, 2007Recently got a Mac pro. However my room only has one network socket going into my router, this goes to ethernet port 1. Internet works fine, no issues. However my old desktop (that the MP replaced) can't get online now - no second network port from the router into the room the computers are in. I have a crossover cable that I've used to connect the 2nd MP ethernet port to the PC ethernet port. However I can't get internet access on the PC. If the PC and port 2 are on their own subnet (not the router/port 1 subnet) I can get file sharing going between the MP & PC, but cannot figure out how to get the router/MP/PC on the same subnet together using both ethernet ports of the MP. I have already tried enabling internet sharing under system prefs etwork, but it doesnt work. Network: Router (connected to internet) at 192.168.1.1 - connected to mac MP port 1 - 192.168.1.2 - works fine in connecting to the net MP port 2 - 192.168.255.1 - works in networking to PC for filesharing PC - 192.168.255.2 - works in networking to Mac for filesharing Any combination of 192.168.1.xxx for the MP port 2 and PC, they can't fileshare anymore and there is still no internet for the PC. Anyone know how to do this?

Feb 28, 2010I found this article below when searching on iMac i7 info.We took delivery of the brand spankin' new 27" i7 iMac last week and connected it immediately to our Final Share SAN in about 5 minutes for video editing. Quick tests showed the SAN was connected and working fine.Then today I started really editing on it and I'm dropping frames every 10 to 30 seconds. Now it appears the ethernet controller that is in the new Mac cannot support the speeds necessary to edit video via the SAN. Our 2 year old iMacs can, but the brand spanking new, most powerful iMac cannot.I'm at a loss as to how Apple can improve every aspect of this machine, including the absolutely stunning 27" LED backlit display, but then cut back on something as simple as an Ethernet Controller that should be designed to work with today's equipment running high speed internet instead of stepping backwards to the speed of older model PowerMac machines.

I figured I could plug one friend's Powerbook G4 into the ethernet, go into Sharing, turn on Internet Sharing, and then nearby computers could borrow the connection - this isn't working. The network doesn't even display on my other friend's powerbook. The little upwards arrow does not display ontop of the airport icon in the menubar, which I think it's supposed to, what's going wrong? Jun 15, 2012I have a headless PC that is running Win7. I want to connect directly to it via ethernet for a nice Gigabit transfer rate. The PC will be relatively portable (I intend to customize a bag for it to fit in) so you can see why I can't just network it all with a router. Anyway, I've hit a few snags. The two computers simply don't see eachother when it comes to their ethernet adapters. Here is the network breakdown: Win7 has a wireless-N adapter (which connects fine to the wireless router here, finds my Macbook and can share files normally), and the ethernet adapter, which I've managed to successfull connect to another Win7 laptop fine, but will not see my mac.Macbook's wireless is also fine, but ethernet adapter, which I've never had problems with networking before, also does not see the Win7 machine.
The Win7 machine has a static IP, and I've even added the IP to the Network Pane WINS list in OS X along with the workgroup name, yet I try to ping/connect to the IP address and I get nothing.
I use a VNC application called TeamViewer to remotely view the headless PC, not sure if that is interfereing, but I don't believe it is. Wire is not a crossover, but I'm going to assume that this macbook's ethernet is switching it automatically. Do I need to disable the wireless adapters?

Mar 23, 2010my Internet was slow on all my machines, (macbook MP Vista Ipod) (has been fine for 5 months)after 5 hours or so they all fixed themselves expect for the MP when im talking slow 0.6kbps download speedI thought what the hell ill reinstall it should fix it. No luck, i then tried Wifi on the MP & it runs fine 2.3mbps on ubuntu downloads fine.so any ideas on why MP via Wifi is Fine MP via ethenet is very slow.

Jun 14, 2009 I used the MacRumors Buyer's Guide for several months to find the best time to buy a MacBook. I'd never had a Mac before and found it to be so valuable. I hope someone in the forum can be as helpful as the site has been.
Yesterday I bought a new MacBook Pro 13" and as a store option the RAM was doubled to 4GB. Everything has worked well so far, in both OS X and Windows XP through Boot Camp, except for either OS accessing the LAN cable on my home ADSL. Both my portable modem (EMobile network in Japan) and the wireless seem to work with no issue, and both OS will recognize the ethernet port. I'm concerned that perhaps the ethernet adapter was modified when the store installed the memory.
I can remove the ethernet cable from one computer (where it works without any settings changes on my Windows notebook) and plug the same cable into the MacBook and it will not be recognized. The Mac OS error is that no cable is inserted.
However, as it's my first Mac, I didn't know if perhaps some new settings are required to make things work smoothly. Is there any DNS settings etc. that must be set for it to connect? Also is there some kind of connection diagnostic that will specify the location of the error in the machine? I'd like to exhaust any option before shipping this back to the store to be repaired or replaced.

I have an iMac (2008) and my wife has a ACER E500 PC (No WiFi connection), running Windows XP Media Edition. The only internet connection we have is to my iMac, so as both my iMac and my wifes PC both have Ethernet connections , I am trying to share my iMac internet connection to my wifes PC via an Ethernet cable, I am having no luck in getting it working.

Jun 19, 2010I'm sure everyone heard of Onlive which launched yesterday, one of of the downsides currently is they wont allow you to play over Wi-Fi due to latency issues. Mostly they don't want the user to experience latency issues and blame it on the service rather than the connection. (They say Wi-Fi will work eventually once they optimize it more, and currently their closed beta testers are able to use it over wireless, and even on the iPad, and iPhone). Anyway, Windows has a nifty feature where you can bridge your connections, and by doing that, Onlive will work over Wi-Fi, I tried it out and it actually worked great, very minimal latency issues, but I usually am on my OSX partition, and want to play it on here. Does anyone know of a way to fake out Onlive? Or do a bridge connections type thing within OS X?
