Apr 27, 2012I am using Mac OS X Lion Server on my iMac that always stays on at home. I also have 4 Macbooks that I have connected to the VPN. When all of these computers are under the same Airport Extreme at home, I can see all of them on any computer and can screen share and connect to any one of them through any computer.However, I want to be able to see these computers even if I am connected through another network. For example, if I am at my office I want to be able to see my iMac or other Macbooks on my sidebar in Finder.i have seen other people do this, I am just wondering what is it that I need to do.I can connect to my VPN from any one of my Macbooks outside of the network perfectly and even through my iPhone.

Obviously there are existing local accounts on these machines.What I'd like to do is to administer these users and machines through Lion Server so that I can use the existing user information for all of the services provided by Lion Server, but to do so without altering the way the end user operates and without any data loss.I am having difficulty finding any information on this, but surely someone has installed Open Directory into an existing Mac network.

Apr 30, 2012I want to be able to disable Mission Control for client computers. We are a school with a 1:1 computer setup and it is too easy for the kids to swipe their desktop away when a teacher walks by. I know I could manually disable the gesture, but I can't disable to my knowledge by permissions and I would rather disable the whole thing all together.

May 13, 2012We have a Macbook and an iMac, both on Snow Leopard. Set them up on TC for backup several months ago, and they worked for a while. Then it stopped working for no obvious reason, with the message:Â
The network backup disk could not be accessed because there was a problem with the network username or password. Open Time Machine preferences to select the network backup disck and re-enter the correct username and password.Â
Of course userame and password were correct, because, first of all, they had not been changed, and second, because I could put in the wrong pw and it immediately would reject it. As it is, it takes it, counts down for 120 seconds, and then gives the above message.Â
Bought a new Macbook Pro, using Lion, and it works with the TC, seemingly proving that all settings on the TC are still good. Tried resetting TC. Tried the Cmd-Alt-p-r reboot, but neither worked.

Software :: Can't Get Older System 9 Computers To Talk?
Mar 12, 2010We have a small ethernet network and need to bring files from projects done on older macs running OS9 into new macs running OSX. All machines can "see" the printers, and other machines running same OS, but we haven't been able to get them to talk to computers that are on different OS. The older machines are different laptops running the latest software they are capable of running - OS9.The newer machines are laptops and desktops running Tiger and Leopard.
Is there any way to get them to talk to one another? Saving to floppies or zipdrives and then burning to cds would be very tedious.

Is it possible for me to put all the songs from my old iPod 8 gig touch onto my macbook then into my new iPod 16 gig touch? None of the songs were purchased on iTunes, I got them other ways... Jul 2, 2012My system is MacPro 2009 with 10.6.8 server and Apple RAID card. Last week, RAID util just notified me of one drive is not viable, so i decided to replace the drive today. The configuration of my system is... There is an Apple Raid Card for HW Raid system Bay 1 = 640 TB drive with Mac OS X 10.6.8 server installed Bay 2, 3, 4 = 1.5 TB drives set up as RAID 5 below is what I did to replace the degraded Bay 4...Â
1. I shut down the system
2. replaced the corrupted drive with the new hard drive
3. tried start the machine again.Now my machine refuses to start up with the blinking question mark... I guess that the system fails to recognize the new drive or cannot find the system files...Â
4. So I put back the degraded drive...
5. The machine still won't start...
6. I tried to use the 10.6 server installation disk to boot up the machine to check if I can fix the system via disk util; but, everytime I do this, I got kernel panic... Â
7. resetting PR Ram didn't help, cannot boot up via safe mode as well (since the system file is not accessible now, I guess...).
8. booting via 10.6.2 server installation DVD still gives me kernel panic... Â
Why would my system corrupt by just replacing one degrade drive? The Mac OS X is not even the part of the Raid system... How am I supposed to fix this issue with out the installation disk?

May 31, 2012I need to reinstall my server becouse it got some issues. The problem is there is a active apple mail server on it. And we need to migrate all the mails and accounts to a new 10.7 installed mac. But since there is problems with the settings in the old one (deep down somewhere), we dont want to clone the whole system, just move the mail database and user accounts.Â
So I can export the OD directory to the new system. That should take care of the accounts. But does the mail db follow the export? Can I just copy the db files to the new system or will they not work with the new accounts?Â

Safari :: Stop 5.1.4 From Force Reloading 15 Times A Day?
Mar 28, 2012I waited a long time to upgrade to Safari 5.1 because the first time I installed it, it kept my fan on constantly / ate up all my CPU. I deinstalled and got the previous version. Finally, when no longer able to watch BBC content, I upgraded and got 5.1.4. Â
Safari used to work great. Now it decides that it has to force reload all pages about once every 40 minutes. It dumps all my cookies so I have to sign back into everything I had open - the facebook, Netflix, twitter, email, etc. It doesn't even remember what Netflix movie you were watching so you have to rebrowse - just because of the force reload. And if you somehow miss clicking on every open tab at the time to start the reload, then the next time you go to that tab it will start all the reloads again. Sometimes I just force quit Safari altogether and restart, clear my whole cache and dump all my cookies. Then I can get a clean hour out of it.Â
It takes up endless time to suffer through this bug and I see that it has been a bug for well over a year. What, if anything can one do about this? Why hasn't it been fixed?

Apr 4, 2012I'm using a Magic Mouse with my MBA because I much prefer a mouse pointer to the touch pad. However, I'm having problem with it that is driving me crazy. Every once in a while, my fingers do something that activates ZOOM in. What I'm doing to cause this is beyond me. What annoys me to no end is that I can't figure out how to cancel the zoom in other than to close the webpage I'm on and then reload it.
What is causing the zoom to activate?
Is there a simple method to cancel zoom other than reloading the webpage?

Dec 2, 2014I have some movies on iTunes that are on my hard drive. I select them to sync to my iPad and they load just fine.However once I delete them from the iPad I do not want them reloaded next time I sync with iTunes.Â

Jun 16, 2012I am using OSX Mail and a me.com address, via O2 broadband in the UK. About once a day, Mail, apparenty randomly, reloads dozens of recently read and deleted messages. So, just now for example, I appear to have 68 new messages, and it's all stuff I've dealt with already, some of it is in the InBox and some is filed in other Mailboxes - doesn't seem to make any difference. So now I'm getting duplicates and probably throwing out items I meant to keep.Â
This is just happening on my desktop iMac and is not replicated on my iPhone or Macbook Air. It feels as if the sync between the iMac and iCloud is somehow corrupting, if that's possible.Â
This has been going on for a few weeks and so isn't getting better on its own (as I have read in other postings). It also doesn't seem to be linked to any other event. The iMac is on all the time, either in use or asleep, and maybe gets restarted once a week.Â
I am wary of deleting things from the Library in case I either lose ALL my mail or it decides to replicate every message in the archive.Â
