I am not totally sure if this is a proper board to start a thread on this topic, but curious, with respect to downloading files from torrent websites, how safe is Mac OSX? I mean I understand that Macs don't usually have problems with viruses and so on, but I was curious if it is okay to expose my mac thru torrents? and How do you guys prevent possible danger of downloading stuff thru torrents?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently bought a 17'' macbook pro (i7), and I am extremely with it. Unfortunately, after a week or so I got connection problems and I decided to switch from airport to cable. This however did not fix the problem. I blamed the modem, but after endless rebooting, trying another modem, running network diagnostics hundreds of times, and even lowering the mtu I began to think it was my macbook pro that was the problem.
After a lot of searching I found out that when vuze (my torrent client at the time) was on, a ping script I set up was giving timeouts. After shutting vuze down and waiting a few seconds, the timeouts stopped.
I tried reinstalling vuze, didn't work. Then I decided to switch from vuze to microtorrent (also utorrent). When running utorrent and importing a torrent, the ping kept working. However, when I imported a second torrent, it started giving timeouts again. As soon as I stopped the second torrent, the timeouts also stopped.
This is not bandwidth related. The first torrent can download at more than 500 kb/s without any internet trouble. However, when two torrents together only download at 30 kb/s, internet stops working.
I did not have this problem when I bought my mac, does anyone know how this is caused and how I can fix it?
And of course, when you have connection problems, try shutting down your p2p client
I am a Mac user and I'm totally addicted to Pages '09. I am currently writing my thesis in Pages and I am strongly considering leaving Word aside. My only problem lies with safety copies: I am the only Mac user in my house and I'm afraid that if something happens to my computer I will be unable to use the .pages files in my Macbook because the damned Word processor is unable to read them. Using the export function is not very useful because this would oblige me to maintain hundreds of copies of my files.
Are there any Windows programs that can convert .pages to .doc? This way I could ask my Parents to install it in their PC and I could go there with my external disk in case anything happens (knock three times). Alternatively are there any Windows word processors that can read pages files?
I've just installed an antivirus and now can't access some websites.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to maintain security, but still be able to access websites?
On PCs, theres Backstreet Browser.. is there anything like this for osx?

I've got an issue where the .torrent files that I download keep coming back, even after I delete them.
Can anyone shed some light on why this is happening?
Firefox won't open .torrent files automatically; instead you need to (OK) confirm-click and following that the torrent is loaded (in my case) in uTorrent.

Here is the real problem that we (MAC OS X) users are facing now.
1- The MACINTOSH HD, is already formatted with Mac OS Extended (Journaled). BUT, I installed bit torrent and whenever I want to download a torrent file for movie or something bigger than 4GB it refused as discussed above. WHY?? In my opinion, Mac OS Extended (Journaled) is also not supporting files larger than 4G?? if this is right .....Damn to MAC then.
2- I thought to myself, why don't I install windows XP by boot camp, and solve this problem??, but Boot camp request you to format the partition for windows with FAT32 so you can read the files when you are in MAC system, but this does not solve the problem as we still can not install files larger than 4GB. !!
3- Even if we format the external HDs with NTFS, MAC OS X will only read them and won't save on them or amend them, So we still can not install torrent files larger than 4GB. !! (Remember FAT 32 can not read NTFS, this means that the installed version of windows by Boot camp (FAT32) can not see the external HD which is formatted as NTFS, also MAC can only read it but NOT amending or saving.
4- What is the best solution regarding the information I have posted above. Please note I am using MacBook Pro 13" with Mac OS X.

Recently I was organizing my files and I moved some items I downloaded with uTorrent from my generic "Downloads" folder to the specific folder that I wanted to organize the file in. Now I would like to seed those files but the torrent file can no longer locate them on my computer. I'm looking for a way to modify the directory that the torrent file looks for the downloaded file in, but I can't find a way to change that. In "Preferences", I even changed the default download location to the folder that the files I want to seed are in, but that hasn't helped.
I had this problem with 4 files that I moved, and in attempting to get it to recognize the new location of the files, I failed and actually ended up redownloading the files through the bittorrent swarm. I would like to avoid doing this for the remaining two files and for other files in the future because this particular tracker keeps tabs on upload and download ratios. The files are not copyrighted and are freely available and endorsed to be torrented, so there are no legal concerns.
Why does my mac stop downloading files, copying to clipboard, saving files to desktop, etc?
iMac g5 1.9 ghz 17" running 10.5.8. Had a hard drive crash and bought a new one. Loaded new OS leapord. Everything works fine at first, but after the computer has been on for a while, it will stop downlading files, disk verify doesn't work. I can't copy and paste stuff. It seems as if the hard drive is full, but I have only used 32GB of 300GB.
When I restart, it works again, then slowly not. Is it an overheating issue? How do I know if my fan is running? Is it a bad hard drive I put in it? Bought it new with three year waranty.
On Rapidshare, I've download a lot of files such as .rar files on my mac and everything has worked fine. Up until today, I downloaded a few and they are windows files because they have the parallels symbol (Yes I have parallels) but my parallels isn't running. So i went back and tried to download old files that I had previously been opened with Mac OSX and they too are opening as parallel files. I dont understand why all the files want me to download the windows version. The only thing that I changed was i finally upgraded my MacPar Deluxe because there was a new version but that's the only thing. So can someone please help me fix this problem. I dont want to download windows files while on my mac.

These have both been uninstalled a while ago and i seem to have the problem that if i navigate to a file in my browser it will not download, it just sits there and does nothing.This is really anoyying as i can't download any files anymore
I presume one of these applications has disabled this behaviour in os x so that it can hijack it and use the app to download files. Does anybody know how to revert this so that browsers can handle downloads properly?
I've been having trouble downloading files from an ftp server (URL) on Finder and while it does fully download eventually, it takes a while and if I click the x to stop it, the download won't stop. Is this a known problem with Finder, is it a glitch, or is it my internet connection.

Or is the raid 1 easily recoverable during a subsequent leopard installation?

I am getting ready to buy a new mbp. I currently have a mbp that I purchased 2 years ago. I did not create a backup to the factory setup when I first purchased the mbp. Would love some advice from more experienced members of the form on the following:
- is there still a way to restore my mbp to the factory presets?
- what programs do you recommend to wipe the sensitive data from your mbp before selling it on ebay? And how significant are the risks of selling your mpb on ebay after using the software?
- what should I do when I initially purchase my new mbp in anticipation of 2012 when I will likely want to purchase a new mbp and sell the old one? (ie, to make it easier to erase all of my data and restore it back to the factory presets)

I have previously had no trouble viewing pdf files from various websites, however am now unable to. It appears to be loading and then just comes up with a blank screen. I am able to view pdf files which have been emailed without problem. I have removed Acrobat Reader & reloaded but this has not helped. I am able to view pdfs on our laptop & ipad and the settings appear to be the same.

I would like to be able to open up AFP on the Users folder (it is by default), but here comes my concern. Some of the users will have their sites hosted in their user Sites folders, including some PHP config files, potentially containing mysql login information, etc. Accessing the site through the web is no problem, as Apache w/ PHP will never show content of the PHP code, however AFP will!

If I download and burn mac applications on a pc CD with win2k will a new MBP be able to read the disk and use the application installers without a hitch? From what I remember, don�t PC�s add an extra bit or something that corrupts the file somewhat? I also have an old Mac with OS9 on it, should I just download the apps on there and burn them with it instead?
