My wife's iMac. Upgraded from Tiger to SL. She tries to reply to email. Spell Checker wants to check every personal name in the original message. She starts telling it to ignore. it will move through first few, then go into Beach Ball and all is hanged up. only way out is to hold down the power switch!

How is spell checking set up? What should I tell my daughter to do to set it up, she is away at Uni so I have to be precise.
I have a 2007 MacBook, 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, OS 10.4.11 (which I got free of charge from a friend who didn't like dealing with the "unrecognized" battery).
I would like to know how to unghost the Spell Checker "learn" button, if that is possible. There does not appear to be an option in the preferences.
On my Macbook running Leopard, I mostly write in French. When the OS is set to French language, the built-in dictionary spell checker is also obviously set to French. But I prefer running the OS itself in English. Is there a way to have the English OS, but the spell checker in French ?

Have I told the Mac to ignore double i's or something? I have it set to red-underline mis-spelled words as I type. It has underlined both 'askiing' and 'pickk' words above, but in emails it does not.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have Snow Leopard, I went to the Dictionary application and changed the preference to "British English (IPA)" but it still checks things like colour as misspelled. is there something I am missing? I went to System Preferences>International and under the Text tap changed spelling to "British English" but still it flags colour as wrong... am I missing something?

My spellcheck is not working right, it underlines the word but when I right click nothing happens. The folders on my desktop are all shrunk and I cannot find a way to make them bigger. Mail not only spell-checks the text I've typed, but also the content of the forwarded text as well.
I use Mail as my email application in Leopard, and write emails in both English and Spanish. If I add a Spanish dictionary to the dictionary App will that atomatically be used in spell check as well? If so does anyone have and recomendations? If not what can I do to have spell check in both languages?

My Spell Check in Mail (3.5) hasn't been "Checking as I type," even tho that setting is checked. I've done everything from restarting mail to shutting down my system and completely restarting the computer. That normally works when I've had this problem in the past. Not this time.
What's IS happening, is that Mail is doing a red underline in the first word of every new line of my email messages, even when those words are spelled correctly. However, aside from underlining the first word of each line, other misspelled words -- in the body -- are not being caught.
Will Snow Leopard's spell check replacement feature in text edit carry over to mail, forum posts, etc? Taht sure would make me happy... Like back there when I spelled taht.

The computer will not respond to any keys pressed, front row remote, mouse, basically anything. The only way to get out is to hold down the power button on the back of the mac to force shut down the computer. I've spoken to the game developers, and they say that it is probably defective hardware because all the other mac users seem to be able to play the game fine. If this is so, which hardware do you think it would be? Something serious such as the motherboard, or simply a video card? How could I go about getting this fixed or replaced- take it to the genius bar?

This happens at least once a day, with no particular pattern. This started happening about 3 weeks ago, and the only solution is to power cycle the machine.

I have a 2008 MacBook Pro 4,1 (15-inch, Early 2008, OS X 10.6.8), that has started locking up periodically. Initially the lockups occurred every couple of days, now they are becoming more frequent, yesterday it happened twice. I am able to move the mouse, change applications via the Dock, but can't close applications. I can't trigger reboot, I have to manually hold down the power button. I've disabled Intego, and run a full memtest scan to see if the RAM is crapping out. ...however there is no EFI update for the 4,1 series.

I have a mid 2007 iMac that seems to, for no apparent reason at all, just randomly go to a blank screen, locking up my Mac requiring a hard shutdown. This happens sometimes right after I start it up or after I'm on for hours at a time. Or not at all, I simply don't get it. I reinstalled Lion (after I redownloaded it to be safe) and it didn't seem to work.

New iMac at first of year has always locked up with green squares (1/4") randomly on the open window. I have to do a hard boot to unlock the screen. This may happen 5 or 6 times a day but I'm finding no pattern. It happens in any software, mail, internet browser, extra programs and only using what I need at the moment, including mail and internet, hasn't worked. I've run disk utility - repair disk and repair permissions multiple times to no avail. I've reinstalled the OS Mavericks and Adobe Creative Suite programs (Photoshop & Premiere Pro), no improvement.
I purchased a high-end iMac specifically to handle high-demand video editing needs. But this happens when checking email or browsing the internet too. Here's a listing of the system from a "Panic (system crashes) log" from the "Activity Report."

I just bought one of the new dual-band AirPort Extremes, to replace an older AirPort Extreme (the last generation before this one). I exported my configuration from the old AEBS to a baseconfig file, disconnected the old AEBS, and plugged in the new one. I then imported the baseconfig file, only to find that although its light will turn green, the AEBS will no longer show up in AirPort Utility. To get it back, I have to do a hard reset of the AEBS.
Through painstaking troubleshooting, I have determined that the problem occurs if the configuration includes a port mapping for SMTP (port 25). If I create all of my port mappings (and there are many) BUT that one, then all is well; but as soon as I add a port 25 port mapping and Update the AEBS, it will not restart properly (green light but no one is home).
Are there any spyware / antivirus scanners for use on the mac which I could use?
I checked my router logs and I seem to be getting several accesses to my macbook IP from several different external IPs on the same port 30124.
It is making me think I may have some spyware or something.
I was wondering if there is any application for Mac OS X that will check text for plagiarism. Im currently in college and I have like 5 essays to write for different classes and I would like to scan these papers before I turn them in. I want to be a 100% sure there is not plagiarism at all. I know this can be avoided but not copying anything exactly is it is online or in books but sometimes even if it not copied exactly the same it can be considered plagiarism.
