I have just two icons on my desktop, like this. That's all very nice, but I'd rather there was no text under them and that they looked like this. I'm sure you'll agree that it looks much prettier, but of course it's a mockup. Can I do this for real without using the trick of renaming the drives to be *space* ?
I'm trying to clean up my desktop and am getting annoyed by the disk icon. It's the CD icon for The Sims 3. If I try to move it, it creates a copy, and if I try to trash it, it ejects the disk, and I play the game enough that I don't want to have to be getting it out and in and out and in all the time, especially where I currently have my computer set up.
How I made it appear there I dont know. I followed Mac's website advice on keeping the ".ds_store" files from being created again but am still left with an icon on the desktop. If I put it in the trash, it reappears, with a copy left in the trash. If I try to put it into something else, a message pops up saying it "cannot be replaced because it is invisible."
I need a way to quickly remove text from a load of file names. I have ripped my DVD TV show series to my Apple TV and transfered them, but I want to make all the file names simpler that what they are currently. Changing them all through FTP would take ages - so I am hoping there is some kind of recursive command I can use to eliminate a set bit of text from a group of folders.
I've just downloaded Safari 5.1.5 and want to create this icon on my desktop, however, I don't want it as a 'short-cut' icon but as the same icon I see on the docking station.I was previously able to do this with Safari 5.0.3.
Got a WD external drive for backup and the WD Smartware Icon is on my desktop and as I am not using the WD software I want to get it off my desktop but when I try to eject it or drag it to the trash it just goes right back to the desktop. If I drag it into the finder it just makes an alias and goes right back to the desktop. It showed up when I turned on the HD along with the MY BOOK icon. Turned off the HD but when I turned it back on same problem. There is an uninstaller for the software but as I have not installed the software it does not work.
The download desktop icon went up in smoke and I can't get it back...before when I downloaded a file from email I could go on my tool bar and access the downloads...now I can only get them in finder. How can I get the download file icon back?
I downloaded pictures from a friends camera onto my iMac. The camera was removed before I selected "eject camera". That has resulted in two empty folders on my desktop that I cannot move or delete.
My icons are disappearing. Apps I download dont have icons and when I throw them in the trash the trash icon on the dock disappears. Also, when I plug in a flash drive or external drive, no icon shows up, just text. My folders that have custom icons are blank now too. How do I fix this?
When I start parallels, the symbol of the voice recognition program appears on the desktop. I can't remove this symbol from the desktop. Doubleclick only moves the symbol from the desktop to the dock. I checked the system setup "speech" of my mac: "voice/speech recognition" and "voice over" are deactivated. So it seems that the setups of windows XP operating system and/or parallels (working tools) are causing this. How can I remove this symbol?
Alright so the easiest way to explain this is with a picture, in the picture the labels are obviously too high, and I would like them to be in the normal place.
In some of my folders, the inside folders appear to be blank and have no text. When I click on the folder icon, the name of the folder is there, but there appears to be a hard return at the end of the text. When I delete the hard return, the text becomes visible.
Rather than go to each folder and do this - why this is happening, and how to correct all the folders wherever they may be on any disk.
Today, with no major changes at all (or downloads), The screen on my MBP no longer shows the files, folders, and aliases I had set up. Only the Hardrive and Idisk Icons. Everything else is GONE? I rebooted, I relaunched, reviewed preferences. Nothing. I also repaired permissions and rebooted.
If I use Finder and drill to the desktop, I definitely SEE all the files aliases, etc. But the don't show up on my screen?
Is there a way to make all text appear larger in all or most of my programs including the desktop? I wear glasses and have a difficult time writing and reading text?
as an extension to my question regarding RAM utilization, I've decided to upgrade my RAM. I went through the process of removing the underside of my MBP. After taking the screws out and mentally marking which slot they came out of (some are of different size), I pulled the lid up at the black trim area (the "neck" of the display mount) as this was the easiest way to get a non-damaging grip on the metal underside -- read: I avoided using a screw driver on the lid. As I started to lift, I was surprised at the amount of force I needed to use in order to remove the lid; something near the center of the cover was still holding the lid to the underside of the body. In fact, the amount of force I needed to use made me pause to question if I missed an important step other than simply removing the screws. I decided to "go for it" and applied more pressure while pulling the lid up and away from the body and heard a "pop" noise.
When I first got my mac I clicked something (maybe in Disk Utility?) that makes the icon for my hard drive show up on my desktop. How do I get it to where it doesn't show up anymore?
Also, I have Picasa on here, but when I try to remove the icon from the desktop it says it will get rid of the application. Is there a way to get rid of the icon without uninstalling it?
I'm new to macs and haven't quit figured out what the icon on the desktop is after downloading something..the icon looks like a drive or what ever you call it.
Do you just keep those there or just eject them? Is there a way to DL items and not have that show up there each time?
I download a file to my desktop, to be used as wallpaper. The icon on the desktop doesn't show the picture. Just a default JPEG icon. I noticed on my wife's desktop, the picture is displayed in the icon. Both of us use Preview to display jpegs. Anyone know where to change this setting, so the icon displays the actual picture?
