IMac :: Removing WD Smartware From Desktop
Jan 29, 2010
Got a WD external drive for backup and the WD Smartware Icon is on my desktop and as I am not using the WD software I want to get it off my desktop but when I try to eject it or drag it to the trash it just goes right back to the desktop. If I drag it into the finder it just makes an alias and goes right back to the desktop. It showed up when I turned on the HD along with the MY BOOK icon. Turned off the HD but when I turned it back on same problem. There is an uninstaller for the software but as I have not installed the software it does not work.

I'm trying to clean up my desktop and am getting annoyed by the disk icon. It's the CD icon for The Sims 3. If I try to move it, it creates a copy, and if I try to trash it, it ejects the disk, and I play the game enough that I don't want to have to be getting it out and in and out and in all the time, especially where I currently have my computer set up.

I have just two icons on my desktop, like this. That's all very nice, but I'd rather there was no text under them and that they looked like this. I'm sure you'll agree that it looks much prettier, but of course it's a mockup. Can I do this for real without using the trick of renaming the drives to be *space* ?

I downloaded pictures from a friends camera onto my iMac. The camera was removed before I selected "eject camera". That has resulted in two empty folders on my desktop that I cannot move or delete.Â

I have a WD Passport. It used to do this annoying thing, where in addition to the actual drive, it would load a virtual vcd drive containing the smartware software too. (This was common to a lot of WD products). To get rid of this, I installed the WD Software on my mac, and changed the settings to that it no longer displayes the VCD. This made the VCD dissappear, but now it shows a new drive called "Boot OS X" , everytime I plug my WD drive in!Â
I don't know what this drive is! And now I have the same equivalent problem to that stupid vcd drive popping up! When I plug my WD drive in, all I want to see is only one icon for the WD drive. Right now I have "Boot OS X" , and "Keanu's Time Machine". I only want "Keanu's Time Machine" to pop up when I plug in the drive.

This should be easy but I can't seem to get it!Â
My 3 year old keeps ejecting my drives because they exist as icons on the desktop.Â
I'd like to remove those drive icons from my desktop but still show them as mounted in my finder sidebar.Â

When I start parallels, the symbol of the voice recognition program appears on the desktop. I can't remove this symbol from the desktop. Doubleclick only moves the symbol from the desktop to the dock. I checked the system setup "speech" of my mac: "voice/speech recognition" and "voice over" are deactivated. So it seems that the setups of windows XP operating system and/or parallels (working tools) are causing this. How can I remove this symbol?

as an extension to my question regarding RAM utilization, I've decided to upgrade my RAM. I went through the process of removing the underside of my MBP. After taking the screws out and mentally marking which slot they came out of (some are of different size), I pulled the lid up at the black trim area (the "neck" of the display mount) as this was the easiest way to get a non-damaging grip on the metal underside -- read: I avoided using a screw driver on the lid. As I started to lift, I was surprised at the amount of force I needed to use in order to remove the lid; something near the center of the cover was still holding the lid to the underside of the body. In fact, the amount of force I needed to use made me pause to question if I missed an important step other than simply removing the screws. I decided to "go for it" and applied more pressure while pulling the lid up and away from the body and heard a "pop" noise.

Having a WD Studio My Book coming next week and want to know what to use with it, WD Smartware or Time Machine. The reason I and is that I have read both positive and negative posts on both. Some say to not load the WD software into your machine as it will cause your problems but do not state what they will be, others say to use the WD software as you he more option for back up. Others say that Time Machine is the only way to go, and others say stay with the WD software. I want to know if either of them is better than the other or it's just a case of either or as both do a good job and it is a matter of personal preference.

How I made it appear there I dont know. I followed Mac's website advice on keeping the ".ds_store" files from being created again but am still left with an icon on the desktop. If I put it in the trash, it reappears, with a copy left in the trash. If I try to put it into something else, a message pops up saying it "cannot be replaced because it is invisible."

I've been given a half torn apart iMac G3 700mhz (which still runs), and plan on putting it's bare essential parts into a case I'm making. I've taken out the drives and logic board with down converter, but now I'm stuck behind the CRT. I know it's very dangerous, but I need to get around it to get to the board underneath it. Do I have to discharge the CRT or could I just snip the suction cable connected to it without any risk? I plan on recycling the thing, but right now I just need it out of my way.

Are there instructions anywhere as to how to remove the 27" iMac from the stand holding it up? I want to transport it without the stand attached and reattach it. Do I need any special tools? Can't find anything via google or other forums on exactly how to do this. It can't be too hard being that the Vesa mount is suppose to be easy to put on.

I have a friends Flat panel 17inch iMac (The volleyball one). She only wants to run 9.2.2 on it for her business but it is dual booting 10.2 on there as well, 10.2 will not boot. I've been getting the message you need to reboot your computer by pressing the power button message. What I would like to know is, is it possible to remove 10.2 while keeping 9.2.2 intact, meaning not having to reinstall 9.2.2

I have a VESA mount on my 27" iMac. When I installed it, I had to use the white plastic card to make the piece of metal with the screws pop out and lock in place. I have the VESA mount unscrewed and the original stand screwed back on, but the little bolt block thing is still locked in place sticking out of the computer. Anyone know how to unlock it so it will slide back into the machine?

We purchased a new imac from the Apple Store online which will arrive in a few days. Our G5 iMac has been sold and we would like to prepare it so that all personal information and files are removed before the new owner picks it up. Please assist us in removing anything of personal nature on it. We are leaving the application programs we installed in it.

I'm curious if anyone has a fairly surefire method to remove scuffs and scratches from an iMac G5. I picked one up from a friend for $50 that needed new caps in the power supply (check) and was pretty roughed up cosmetically. Now I've decided to keep it as a kitchen/guest computer but would like to get rid of the scratching as much as possible.

My wife just called in a panic. She opened an e-mail from Verizon Wireless. The e-mail noted that we had a bill of over $1100 which was completely wrong. Unfortunately she clicked on a graphic within the email and then decided to forward it to me. At that point, her mail app stopped functioning. I've Googled the issue and found out that she most likely has infected her iMac with a trojan. She is currently running an anti-virus software that I don't have much faith in. How to remove this trojan?

I'm from Austria so I was not sure if I'll get it before Christmas but today my i7 iMac finally arrived and it is absolutely amazing. I was so afraid of all the possible issues everyone was talking about in this forum but now I'm really relieved and amazed by that beautiful machine!!!
but back to my question. After setting up my system and installing all the tools and software I was trying to find some cool images for the desktop background, like stills from Avatar or something like that, but I wasn't able to find anything near the iMacs resolution.

We have six separate accounts for family members on our Imac. Most work well. However, when two of our children access their accounts, the desktop background size shrinks to about 80% of the screen size. The fonts and icons also become larger. When they log off of their accounts, the appearance changes all of the other accounts until we re-start the computer. Re-start makes it go back to full screen size until on of the two affected accounts are accessed again.
I've attempted changes through the desktop appearance menus in preferences, to no avail.

1. I've been looking at the Mac Mini because of price (which is a main reason that I haven't seriously thought about switching before). It seems to have the stats of a serious desktop machine. How does it stack up?2. Is it hard to get used to the Mac OS? I am a very proficient Windows user and I wonder if I will feel like a novice for very long on a Mac.3. How many years, typically, do Macs "last"? With a PC they are usually way out dated by 3 years; how does Mac stand up?

It will not allow me to advance beyond the desktop, it will not respond to repeated restarts. Everything is functional but I cannot access anything after reaching the desktop. 10.6.2.snowleopard etc. I cannot get it to respond after reaching the desktop, none of the topbar functions respond at all to anything. Is there any keyboard command I can try? This is being typed on an old pc I had laying around...

I put in a computer game i found in my iMac, and the CD didn't come up on the desktop like CD's usually do. It just continued whirring like it was loading the CD, nothing happened. I tried to restart, but it got to the desktop background, and the little black swirly thing in the middle of the screen. And after 15 minutes it didn't restart OR shut-down so i had to press the power button, which I hate doing. So i now i have no way of getting the CD out, and I'm kind of scared I've completely knackered it, everything else is working swimmingly, but theres a CD stuck in the drive and i can't get it out :|
