I was playing around with the desktop icons and changed the USB external drive icon. I would like to get back the original orange USB icon. I can't seem to find it on the iMac. Where is it stored so I may copy it?
View 6 RepliesI really need your help with this one. I was changing all of my folder icons and for some strange reason the Downloads icon will not change and now wont even appear. Please see attached screenshot.I have done the following to try and fix this problem:
1. Used LiteIcon and Candybar but both weren't able to fix the problem.
2. I went to /system/Library/coresevices/coretypes.bundle/contents/resources and the correct downloads icon does appear. It just wont appear in the Finder Window.
3. I have rebooted, logged in and even did a system cache clear and still nothing.
4. Tried to change it manually with the Command I and copy and paste with changing permissions. Nothing worked.
How come external disks icon cannot be displayed on desktop of my macbook air?

Macbook air, Mavericks os. since I've updated to mavericks, Ive noticed the MacIntosh Harddrive Icon on the desktop (which does change location), is covering icons of images underneath it. This is not only unusual, but it makes viewing the filename difficult. Why is this happening....it makes no diference how I arrange the icons on the desktop, one ends up under the HD Icon.

I got a 1.5tb external hdd. My buddy loaded it up with tons of movies for me. Worked great for about one week. I hate my desktop being cluttered with icons so I decided to erase the icon on my desktop. Now I can't find my hard drive no matter what I do. Finder: it's not there. Disk utility: it's not there. It is plugged into the wall and thus a blue light emitting from the front and it is clearly plugged into the USB on the back of my Mac mini. I just can't find it anymore no matter what I do.
View 7 Replies View Relatedafter repairing disk permissions using the Apple OS Disk Utility and/or verifying "Sharing & Permissions" in the "Get Info" window of a drive, all connected hard drives on the system will suddenly have a small lock icon on the lower left corner of the drive icon. "Custom" is what appears in the "Get Info" window in the "Sharing & Permissions" for both System and Admin users and they can't be changed. The drives won't open when clicked on saying something about "you don't have correct permissions or privileges to access this drive".
Rebooting, creating new users, repairing Disk permissions and/or repair disk in Disk Utility, Disk Warrior, booting from another drive and even booting from an Apple OS installer disk have no effect on the locked drives, I can't get to them......................
I am a photographer. My Mac Tower and Macbook Pros display my external hard drives on the desktop. That makes workflow so much easier. I just purchased an I-Mac and have to access the external HDs through the menu. how I can display the icons for the external HDs on my desktop?

Sorry if this is in the wrong place, its my first post here..
I used to use my HP external drive for time machine, but since i got a new bigger WD one to use with time machine i have wiped the HP using disk utility but it is still showing up on the desktop with a time machine icon. i think i can still use it like a normal hard drive but it is causing a bit of confusion and its really irritating!! is there any way that i can change it back? i've tried wiping it a few more times but it still won't work..
For some reason, my desktop icons are stacked on my hard drive. I am able to drag the items to the trash or another folder but I cannot move them to another location on the desktop. I did check the "get info" on the desktop and the "locked" option is not checked. Any file that I download or save immediately appears in the top right corner of the desktop on top of the HD icon. Does anyone have any ideas why this is happening?
View 3 Replies View Relatedi woke up this morning and my western digital external HDD icon is not showing up on the desktop. I currently use this as a time machine and it has been working for about a year. This has happened before and just a simple re-plug of the usb does the trick, but i have been working on this for hours and for some reason it is not showing up. I have unplugged everything and re plugged them back in and nothing is working. i have checked the disk utility and the disk utility recognizes it. but i still dont know why it doesn't have an icon. i am running a repair disk on the external HDD now and it and it has been "repairing" for about 30 min now. i have tried to backup but it is not working either.
I'm new to 10.7. Finder/desktop do not have icons for my hard drives. How do I find them and navigate the structure to find things and troubleshoot?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have an annoying problem when I start up my external hdd in OS X. Let's say the location for the disk is: /Volumes/disk A. Sometimes (often) after a reboot or just a restart of the external hdd in OSX the location becomes: /Volumes/disk A 1. The system adds a 1 to the location of the disk!?!? Torrents cannot found the location of existing downloads and it's the same with my usenet client. The only way I've managed to solve the problem is to try to restart osx + external hdd until the location becomes /Volumes/disk A again (or recheck ALL torrents to the new location). I haven't found any logic when it goes back to the original place yet so often it takes a while to get it right.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a 500g AcomData external firewire drive that i use w/ one of my G4's running OS9.2. I have been using the drive for about 3 months with no issues. Yesterday i went to work on some music files, and when i tried to open my session, a bunch of the drums were missing. When i went to the drive and looked in the actual folder, all the missing drums were there, but their icons read 'PC' and the music program wont recognize them? Basically, i moved some files from my G4 to my external drive. They were initially Pro Tools files and the drive must have converted them to 'PC'. When i do 'apple I' it doesnt say that any of the info/format has changed? But the Icon is different, and Pro Tools wont see it? I have done this a bunch with all my other songs, for the past 3 months with no issues? Is there anyway to change these files back to what they used to be?

I went to get info and scrolled down to the Sharing and Permissions
But there is nothing there but a greyed out : You can only read
There are No boxes to check or uncheck, No options to change to read and write, No name of owner or ignore ownership box. NOTHING ELSE IS THERE

For whatever reason, my Hard Drive icon has moved itself down a spot on the OS X desktop. It's the only icon on the desktop and when I put it back in the upper right corner like it was originally it stays until I reboot and then it's moved back down a "spot." Anyone run into this funny behavior?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI just switched to a Mac a few hours ago after using a PC for years. I downloaded Firefox for Mac, and it works fine. The only thing is I have a disc drive of it on my desktop, as well as an icon on the bar. I have mounted the drive and dropped the icon into the applications folder, exited Firefox completely and was successful at "ejecting" the drive so it left my desktop. The thing is, when I went back and opened Firefox, that drive thing came back and it asked me if I wanted to run the application or something like that. Is there any way I can get Firefox to open normally and run without that driver thing on the desktop.

On my desktop the little disk image icons are coming up when i open certain applications. I wanna make them disappear, but still be able to see ipods, cds, and external drives.
Also(somewhat irrelevant), occasionally when i open firefox, it asks me to drag it in the applications folder, but it's already there. please help. its so annooying
i am a tad stumped by this issue i'm having right now with my new imac. i noticed one day that none of my desktop aliases show any longer. in fact if i go to the desktop folder through finder my files and such show in there however none of my aliases nor those files show on the actual desktop. another thing i've noticed is that whenever i now try to drag and drop anything to the desktop whether it be a URL from safari or an alias i made in finder the dragged item simply just drags itself back to where i pulled it from.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a bunch of flash drives I need to format for work, and we want to put our company logo as the icon for each drive. We wanted to format them as MS-Dos Fat so that they'll be readable and writeable on both Mac and Windows computers. But when I format them that way and change the icon, it displays as a generic preview JPEG image instead of the real image or even the default hard drive icon.
I managed to fix it so the icon will display properly in Snow Leopard, but in Lion the drive still mounts with the generic Preview thumbnail.
Is there any way I can easily format a flash drive so that a) it will be readable and writeable on Windows and OSX machines and b) have the icon for the drive appear correctly on Lion, Snow Leopard, and windows machines?
MacBook Pro; 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo; 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3; OS X 10.6.8.
The Issue is a duplicate icon of the hard drive appeared on the desktop this AM upon startup.
I don't know what caused it. It just appeared.
It seems to contain everything the start up icon contains when I open it.
I moved it to the trash, but did not erase the trash. I chickened out, so to speak. I removed back to the desktop.
I have the desktop view set to arrange by date modified. It appears approximately half way down the list of icons showing on the desktop. It seems to me that, if it is a duplicate, and by all appearances it is, then it should appear immediately after the real hard drive icon.
