OS X :: Movie File Alias For Front Row Doubles The Files In HD?
Mar 27, 2009Does making an Alias of my movie files to point to Front Row doubles the files and take up more space in the HD? I don't understand what Alias really is.

View 3 RepliesI'm going to University in September, so I'm ripping all my DVDs to AVI format (NOT MP3, so I can't add them to iTunes) so I can save storage. And I'd like to view them in Front Row with an image and a description of the movie. So is there a way I can add these to the files? This is how they look in iTunes at the moment.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI was wondering if it were possible to put a poster of a movie I downloaded in Front Row just like how the movie previews have it?
View 2 Replies View RelatedCan they be played this way? We know that Front Row can access iTunes because it shows the Top 10 Movies in the Movies Section, but when I rented a movie last night, it didn't show up there. Is something wrong? If not, why hasn't Apple came out with a fix for it.
View 10 Replies View RelatedI'm experiencing some strange behavior in Front Row under 10.5.1 and I was wondering if it's "by-design": When browsing for photos via Front Row, after choosing an event - whenever an event contains some movie clips in it, the clips would show as a blank, black screens during the event slide show. Once the slide show skips to the next photo, everything continues as usual...
I'm finding it hard to believe that this is how it was meant to be. Can't it just show the movie-clip? (or at least skip it...?)
I need to open an alias file, how did this horrible situation happen?

I do a home photo editing business. One of a my clients sent me a disc that she zipped to compress because there were a lot of pictures on it. When I try to open it on my Mac Book Pro I keep getting an error message that it cannot find alias and what program do I want to use to open it. It also gives me an option to "fix alias" but it doesn't seem to work. What am I doing wrong? Why can't I open zip files on my Mac Book Pro? I should probably mention that the client also uses a Mac Book Pro and her pictures were in her iPhoto before she zipped them on a disc.

Every time I try to move a file from my application folder and move it somewhere (e.g. desktop) it makes an alias of the file(or folder) rather than letting me move the file. I rebuilt permissions and all the other Voodoo.

I want to create stacks for my Applications and put them in the dock by type. Utilities, Music & Video, iLife, etc. I think what I will do is make aliases for all the applications and put them in subfolders separate from the Applications folder, so then I have these 3-6 subfolders in my dock as stacks that I can display in Grid or Fan mode. And I don't have to see all my applications in one jumbled Grid and search for them.
Yes, I know Spotlight or QuickSilver could access them differently.
My question is, when I have created this duplicate system with the aliases to the apps, how do I remove the Alias (arrow) portion of the icon so that they look just like the actual icon down in the stack (or in my subfolders, etc)?
My Mac won't automatically play an mp4. It comes up with an error message saying "This movie could not be opened. This is not a movie file:. What am I missing? I understand it should just automatically play...
View 3 Replies View RelatedI was just about to burn a cd to back up some files. I put them all on the cd (didn't click burn yet) and then I deleted them off my computer, and the clear my trash can. I went to burn the cd and realized I had made a bad mistake. It still shows the alias' on the cd folder. Is there any way I can get the files out of the alias? Or am I too far screwed and have to get a recovery program?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am having some trouble with some new iMacs that are running Lion. Sometimes they will turn a file into an alias. It replaces the original with the alias and will not allow me to access the file any longer like the original is completely missing. It seems to be random, it does not happen to one type of file or any one program. It has happened on our servers (when copying pdfs and saving indesign files) and also locally. I was able to find a temporary fix by downloading path finder and unchecking the "alias bit" option. This seems to fix the issue at hand, but I need a more permanent solution, or at least something I can tell my users to avoid doing.

Why are alias files so big now? Before (OSX 10.3), they were rarely bigger than 1 KB, but now (OSX 10.7), they're often up to 1.6 MB! Can we do something to keep them small? As I understand it, an alias is just a pointer or reference to another file. When you open or print it, the operating system actually opens or prints the original file referenced. All that needs to be stored is the directory path to the original file, either (or both) as a full reference or a relative reference, plus its file system ID and perhaps a drive ID (in case it's moved). This should take only a few bytes. On prior Mac operating system versions (e.g., 10.3.9), these alias files were just a few hundred bytes in size, rarely over 1,400 bytes total. But now I notice that, under Mac OS 10.7, newly created alias files are always hundreds of KB large, and can typically be as huge as 1.6 MB! The custom icon only accounts for a fraction of this size. However, sometimes they can still be as small as before (only a few hundred bytes). Old aliases from a prior OS version (usually but not always) still work in opening their original file, so apparently we don't need the extra size. So, what is in these files?! I know these are analogous to "shortcut" files under MS Windows, which are not that large. Having aliases be so huge defeats the purpose of a small file reference that can be used in multiple other places. One would like to use an alias so as to not have to keep a copy of a large file. But I notice that MB-sized aliases are often created even when the original file is a tiny 1 KB file. Moreover, a larger original file might create a smaller alias than that for a smaller original file, even when both original files are in the same folder. What gives? I use aliases extensively, so as to keep references to the same original file in multiple folders, since these files fall into the multiple categories that each folder contains. By using aliases, I ensure that there is only a single "master" version that is edited when a file is opened from any of those folders. Many of the original files are pretty small, yet their aliases are many orders of magnitude bigger. This is very discouraging towards using this handy feature. Is there something I am doing wrong to end up making them so big – perhaps a system setting? What is in these files that they need to be so huge? I suppose I can use Unix symbolic link files by using a command line in Terminal, such as 'ln -s originalfile linkfile', but these are less functional, since you can't move or rename the originalfile without breaking the linkfile's association to it.

I was cleaning up my desktop, and I created a new folder and was going to just drag everything into it. I selected everything, dragged and WHOA! All of my original files were GONE and only alias's were left. I search and the originals aren't found, I open the alias's and they want me to find the originals. The originals are just GONE. And I still don't know what I did!!
View 4 Replies View RelatedSo I had 2 alias images(jpg) that weren't working. I tried dragging them, fixing disks...etc and nothing worked. They were obviously images that became corrupted and missing.
So I read somewhere to type the name of the files in spotlight, and that worked. I just typed the first 3 numbers and the files dissapeared from "finder".
I was wondering how did that happen? and could the files be still on my drive?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have an external hard drive connected to my Time Capsule that is loaded with a bunch of VIDEO_TS folders of all my DVDs, and I have that drive aliased in my "Movies" folder on my MacBook Pro, so when I open Front Row, it points to my external HDD, and everything is hunky-dory. But I also have other files in this HDD (a bunch of JPG files) that are also being seen by Front Row. For reasons that are too boring to get into, I don't want to separate the files into different locations, I would like to keep them together. But my goal is to be able to somehow block Front Row from seeing these JPG files and just display the list of my DVDs instead. Is there any way to tell my alias to block out the JPGs, or some way to hide the JPGs from that particular alias, or something along those lines?

I've got a 500gb drive in my MacBook, check out what comes up when i quick-view my home folder, apparrently Snow Leopard has got a new feature of doubling your disk space now! Anyone else discovered this 'feature'? If only it were true...
*EDIT*
OK, do ignore this thread! I've just realised it's prob because I'm running file-vault so it's using a disk image for my user folder! Sorry for the excitable 'bug report'!
why Aperture is creating doubles while importing photos? Within Aperture, the events only show single pictures but there are 2 copies of the same photo displayed within finder. Example:
-DC101010.jpg
-DC101010 (1).jpg
Some findings:
Happens on new files never imported and on files I've imported before (creating new events the 2nd time and unchecking "do not import duplicates") Removing the file with a "(1)" in the name does not affect Aperture...The 2 files are identical in dates and size, with preview showing the same picture.Creating a new test library and importing did not fix the problem

With Lion, my Safari pages suddenly double in size with a slight movement of my mouse. Also, with Lion, when I leave my iMac for some period of time, the pages freezes and the cursor point pixilates when I move the mouse. I have to turn off the computer and put in my password to restore functions.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI upgraded to Lion and sadly, Front Row is not supported. I somehow found the Front Row app in my systems folder and moved it to my Applications folder. Front Row now shows up in my applications folder, as well as Launchpad. However, when I go into Front Row, it does not recognize any of my media from iTunes. I tried out this website: [URL]..blog/frontrowenablerforlion to no avail. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to how to make Front Row work in OS X Lion.

So I haven't used Pandora in a while, and just started again last week. I figured I would grab one of the third party apps, so I didn't have to use Safari to listen. I tried PandoraJam, PandoraBoy, and PandoraMan, and none of them work right. I can listen to stations that I have already created, but I can not create a new station. Every time I try to type an artist or song in the box, it doubles every letter. For example say I wanted to search for "Train" If I try to type that in the search box it comes out "Ttrraaiinn." I know Pandora recently released their own App, so did they break 3rd Party apps, to promote Pandora ONE?

I was thinking of using mac the ripper to rip my personal DVD. Is there a way in Front Row to import video_ts files without using an optical disk? As far as memory serves this wasn't possible with Tiger. If this is impossible what is an other way to store DVD's on my hard drive and watch them in front row?
