I was just about to burn a cd to back up some files. I put them all on the cd (didn't click burn yet) and then I deleted them off my computer, and the clear my trash can. I went to burn the cd and realized I had made a bad mistake. It still shows the alias' on the cd folder. Is there any way I can get the files out of the alias? Or am I too far screwed and have to get a recovery program?
View 3 RepliesI want to create stacks for my Applications and put them in the dock by type. Utilities, Music & Video, iLife, etc. I think what I will do is make aliases for all the applications and put them in subfolders separate from the Applications folder, so then I have these 3-6 subfolders in my dock as stacks that I can display in Grid or Fan mode. And I don't have to see all my applications in one jumbled Grid and search for them.
Yes, I know Spotlight or QuickSilver could access them differently.
My question is, when I have created this duplicate system with the aliases to the apps, how do I remove the Alias (arrow) portion of the icon so that they look just like the actual icon down in the stack (or in my subfolders, etc)?
I am having some trouble with some new iMacs that are running Lion. Sometimes they will turn a file into an alias. It replaces the original with the alias and will not allow me to access the file any longer like the original is completely missing. It seems to be random, it does not happen to one type of file or any one program. It has happened on our servers (when copying pdfs and saving indesign files) and also locally. I was able to find a temporary fix by downloading path finder and unchecking the "alias bit" option. This seems to fix the issue at hand, but I need a more permanent solution, or at least something I can tell my users to avoid doing.

Why are alias files so big now? Before (OSX 10.3), they were rarely bigger than 1 KB, but now (OSX 10.7), they're often up to 1.6 MB! Can we do something to keep them small? As I understand it, an alias is just a pointer or reference to another file. When you open or print it, the operating system actually opens or prints the original file referenced. All that needs to be stored is the directory path to the original file, either (or both) as a full reference or a relative reference, plus its file system ID and perhaps a drive ID (in case it's moved). This should take only a few bytes. On prior Mac operating system versions (e.g., 10.3.9), these alias files were just a few hundred bytes in size, rarely over 1,400 bytes total. But now I notice that, under Mac OS 10.7, newly created alias files are always hundreds of KB large, and can typically be as huge as 1.6 MB! The custom icon only accounts for a fraction of this size. However, sometimes they can still be as small as before (only a few hundred bytes). Old aliases from a prior OS version (usually but not always) still work in opening their original file, so apparently we don't need the extra size. So, what is in these files?! I know these are analogous to "shortcut" files under MS Windows, which are not that large. Having aliases be so huge defeats the purpose of a small file reference that can be used in multiple other places. One would like to use an alias so as to not have to keep a copy of a large file. But I notice that MB-sized aliases are often created even when the original file is a tiny 1 KB file. Moreover, a larger original file might create a smaller alias than that for a smaller original file, even when both original files are in the same folder. What gives? I use aliases extensively, so as to keep references to the same original file in multiple folders, since these files fall into the multiple categories that each folder contains. By using aliases, I ensure that there is only a single "master" version that is edited when a file is opened from any of those folders. Many of the original files are pretty small, yet their aliases are many orders of magnitude bigger. This is very discouraging towards using this handy feature. Is there something I am doing wrong to end up making them so big – perhaps a system setting? What is in these files that they need to be so huge? I suppose I can use Unix symbolic link files by using a command line in Terminal, such as 'ln -s originalfile linkfile', but these are less functional, since you can't move or rename the originalfile without breaking the linkfile's association to it.

All of my original files were GONE and only alias's were left. I search and the originals aren't found, I open the alias's and they want me to find the originals. The originals are just GONE. And I still don't know what I did!!
View 4 Replies View RelatedSo I had 2 alias images(jpg) that weren't working. I tried dragging them,fixing disks...etc and nothing worked. They were obviously images that became corrupted and missing.
So I read somewhere to type the name of the files in spotlight,and that worked. I just typed the first 3 numbers and the files dissapeared from "finder".
I was wondering how did that happen? and could the files be still on my drive?

I had about 40 short videos on an SD card and I thought I copied them to their appropriate file. Well, incidentally, I didn't get them copied, and I went to clean off the SD card. I selected all the files, and "moved" them to the trash. I did not empty the trash, but I opened the trash and they are no where to be found.... I was curios if my MacBook Pro might send those types of files to the trash in a different format, or do they send a bulk of files like that somewhere else? Here is an example of how the files read "IM000003.AVI" the number changes with its position... I am prepared to eat my mistake and not have those vids anymore, but I would sure like some direction if anyone has any.... they gotta be on my computer somewhere....

As far as I remember everytime I shut my comp. down it went though FILEVAULT. And now in order to the computer to work I had install everything again. So I did. It asked me to delete all files and folders and I clicked YES, hoping I have in my time capsule or filevault.But now I don't know to restore my files.

He was hoping that I could recover some photos from his folders that he says were accidentally deleted. I know traditionally you would just run recovery software like DiskWarrior or Tech Tool Pro but he no longer owns his mac and simply has these folders to work with.
So the basic question is:
Is it possible to recover deleted photos from the iPhoto Library using only the Photos folder (which contains his entire iPhoto library) and his home Library folder.
also if it is not possible to recover photos of any kind, is it possible to recover anything else? I would love to be able to at least show him some sort of results as I owe him a favor
The USB flash drive is Sandisk, 4GB, formatted for Mac. It became corrupted and I don't have access to stored files. The messages on screen is that disk can not be read and invitation to reformat it. I found special software for recovering files from corrupted drives but it is not affordable for a student like me. I've tried to find in forums and word of mouth some shareware/freeware working on Mac OS 10.3.9 but all I got is programs that take space on HD and do nothing, that is, software that is about selling and marketing stuff, not the real thing. Tried with 3 different such a programs, sheer time wasting. I found that this area is pretty much absolutely dark. Do experienced fellow mac users know about some truly working shareware/freeware that can help me retrieve the files from this corrupted Sandisk USB flash drive?

So i cloned my old install onto my external hard drive using carbon copy cloner. once that was done and verified that it was good, i inserted my leopard dvd and installed: erasing my os x install...now i booted up and was messing in disk utility and erased my external hard drive...i thot it was the other one i had plugged in for time machine! i just lost all my important files, including my itunes library, and everything else that i really need!!
View 6 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded to snow leopard because i needed to install logic pro and I decided to format the hard drive, I did my back up but there was to much music on it so I did a couple of dvd's just for the music I compressed them (.zip) with stuffit one of them did work but the other one where it has all of Itunes library doesn't unzip. I wonder if I can recover it from time machine?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI was installing an upgrade for one of my applications, and i had to reboot my i mac. After reboot it was stuck on the white apple screen for maybe a half an hour, then on the blue login screen for maybe 5-10 I went to sleep after 5.
When It restored there were no user accounts, and I had to create a new one. All of the programs were available, but I had to authorize and all that kind of stuff.
I just wanted to know if there was a way recover the deleted user files on the mac?
I had a PC before I had a MAC, and I started using my external hard drive (a FAT32 drive) with my MAC using NTFS-3g. Now my hard drive has stopped working - it is recognised by my mac although no files show up, and it is not recognised in the PCs I've tried it in, and seems to crash them. I tried DiskWarrior to recover the data, but it only works in NTFS. I am looking for a way to try and fix the drive and retrieve the data using a mac rather than a PC.

I deleted my jpg files in the data folder because I thought it was a duplicate file. I didn't know when downloading pictures from a digital camera, iphoto creates two jpg files. One in data folder and other in original folder. I tried copying the jpg files from original folder into the data folder but I'm still having issues. Is there any way I can recover my jpg files from data folder?
View 1 Replies View RelatedSo my friend, whos' computer this is, deleted my account and all its files associated with it (when he was mad at me lol) but didn't realize or forgot that there was a text document on there with atleast 30 hrs of work on it and i hadn't managed to back it up on another system yet. so is there any way to recover this file? I have filesalvage running currently and tried diskwarrior but that didn't seem to be the proper tool to use. Any mac freaks got any advice? It'd be really nice NOT to have to repeat 30 hrs of work, but at this rate its already taken 10 hrs or so just trying to recover this file.

I took my computer to the Genius Bar and the guy said my drive was dead but said I could possibly recover some of my files with an external hard drive. How exactly would I go about doing this? I've searched through posts but haven't really found anything specific. Do I go through Disk Utility or do I need a third party program like Data Rescue? He said to just boot from an external drive and then browse my old hard drive (which does show up in Disk Utility) and move things over.

I've gone and deleted my e-mails from my mail folder as for some reason all my latest e-mail files seem to have been stored in a folder named under a long gone e-mail account not my current account (huh?) and for some wierd reason mail has re-created another folder with the same old account name to store a copy of the current e-mails in anyone know 1 how to change this and 2 if it's possible to get a good free prog to recover the deleted files??

Same thing happens to the internal HD on my iBook G4. Sometimes the internal HD works, sometimes not.
I desparately need to find someway to attempt to either fix the external 500GB HD, or recover the files. The 500GB was my main HD, and I have so much very important data that I need to recover (no backups!).
I have years of research (lots of family history), thousands of pictures (many very old), my personal journals that I've been keeping for years, personal information, letters, documents, family videos, and all of my e-mail.
Somebody was telling me that there is special software that will recognize the HD, and allow you to recover the files.
What would you recommend? At the present I have no money to do anything, but will save up for the recovery software. My uncle is getting me a new hard drive, so I'll have that to back up the files when I have the recovery software ...
If my hard drive was "scrubbed" by techs at the genius bar who thought that my computer had a software issue (it didn't) does that mean that a data recovery tool wouldn't be able to find the deleted files?

I went to make a copy of an important drive and accidentally re-formatted it (re-formatted mac journaled, originally mac journaled). The drive contained a bunch of important disk image files which I need to retrieve whole. I'm fairly confident that the files are still there and only the table information got overwritten, as the re-format took about 30 seconds. None of the recovery software I've seen however, can retrieve .dmg files, or such large files (these are up to 32 gb each in size).how I can retrieve these disk image files?

I have a late 2011 15" Macbook Pro with a 500 GB SSD, 12 GB Ram, i7 Dual Core Processor, 2.2 GhZ that runs on OS X 10.7.2 (Lion), and within the last couple of weeks, I noticed that a couple files and folders went missing completely. I even restored everything weeks back through Time Machine, but even then, the folders and files were not there. I do not backup a lot on this MBP as it's mostly my personal MBP and not a work one as my iMac is, but the folders that are missing, I would like to have back again. They were just folders with pictures in them and a few graphics that I worked on; they were saved in my Documents panel. I'm wondering what the cause for the problem would be, how I can retrieve the folders/files (or IF I can), and possibly how to prevent this from happening again.
The folders and files went missing without the MBP being booted, they disappeared while the MBP was on and logged in. I only have one user account on this MBP, and everything else seems to be fine, aside from the missing folders and files. I have scanned my MBP for viruses and everything else, but nothing comes up and I'm really careful with what is downloaded on all of my computers, anyway.

only recently i lost the possibility to play my mp3s neatly by clicking little play icon inside the file icon. i know this depends on the size of icons, but no matter how big my icons are the play button doesn't show.
