View 2 RepliesI have had a Macbook Pro 15" for about a year now, and suddenly Skype seems to be crashing my computer. The computer has 8gb of ram with an i7 processor, so i have no idea why Skype, is suddenly crashing up my computer. Ive been using, Free Memory, to track how much ram is available on my computer at certain times, and now, when i launch Skype, it goes down to 18mb out of 8 gb. I don't know why this is happening??

I know a lot of things that have to do with computers but they are very general things. When it comes to a computer crashing, I have no idea how to find out why it happens. My late '08 Unibody MacBook has been crashing on the frequency of 2-3 times a day or so and is very frustrating! I have no idea why it's doing it, but i did copy the thing I get when it restarts. Here is the log for the last 3 times it has crashed

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have an 08 mbp. Was awesome for about the first yr. Slowly it kept slowing down to the pt where I just open up a browser like chrome and the memory fills up suddenly. I try backing up my very important files so I can reformat it but as soon as I try pasting even a 1 gb file it says memory full. I have 2 gigs and that was more than enough for my use.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've had no issues with data backup on my external hard drive since I got my iMac over a year ago. There was always plenty of space to make daily backups and last time I looked my data was backed up from about January.
Yesterday my backup failed for the first time. The volume saved to disk is 223GB and the computer says there's not enough free memory for further backups (only about 9.5GB left). Going into Time Machine I can see I've lost all my backups before yesterday lunchtime.
I've been trying to identify what I might have done to cause this and the only thing I can come up with is data capture overload during the importing of video from a camcorder into iMovie and/or Final Cut Express. Is it possible there are stray files left over from my video editing that are clogging up my system? I've checked out my Final Cut Express Documents files but nothing here seems to add up to the huge amount of data which seems to be causing this problem. If this isn't it then I don't know where all this extra data has come from... How can I find out where this extra data is which is preventing Time Machine from backing up?
Is it possible there is some problem with Time Machine configuration? Right now the configuration window reads this:
I am upgrading to 8GB in myMac mini. I did the trouble shooting( command, option P,R) thing after getting 3 beeps but it didn't work. So I tried one 1GB plus one 4GB to total 5GB and it booted.
How can I get 8GB to work? Why does 5GB work and 8GB not work?

3yr old black MacBook has bad memory slot. Will not boot with chip installed. Tried swapping chips and slot 1 or 2 and its the slot. So at least computer works. What are the odds 2nd slot will fail? Is that rare? Is it just a bad solder connection on main board for memory terminal? Or some tiny hidden board trace or other hard to find component?

I recently received an iMac as a "gift"... turns out it has some problems. I am unable to reinstall the default OS (Mountain Lion) because I have yet to be able to partition the HDD correctly. The error I keep getting is: Partition failed with the error: Wiping volume data to prevent future accidental probing failed. At this point, the default Macintosh HD isn't showing, so it must of been erased/deleted.

I recently bought a replacement keyboard on ebay for my MBP and just installed it. It's been about a week, and just today, I noticed the capslock key doesn't work.. I'm not sure if it has been this way, or if it recently just stopped. The light doesn't come on at all.
I was curious if this was a common problem? If not, is their anything I can do as a substitute for caps lock? Another key perhaps? Or, a button on the task bar or something?

I have a iMac DV G3/500 (Special Edition) from summer 2000. Anyway, I am using Mac OS 10.2.8. Recently, my start up disk's memory has gone done from 1.2 GB available free space to 668MB (currently). I haven't saved anything on this disk so I can not understand why this memory has dissappeared. I have also had icons on the start up menu disappear. Could someone please tell me how I can restore the missing memory?
I have a Black MacBook (Early 2008). I think that I still have the factory standard RAM sticks (I bought the Mac used from a friend). I noticed today that I am running on only one gig of RAM even though I have two gigs of memory.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI just bought a early 2009 MAC Pro and it came with 3GB of RAM, I ordered 3 2GB sticks of memory to replace the 3 1GB sticks that I had in there from Kingston. I turned off the unit, I popped the little levers and pulled the memory out of slot 1, 2, 3 and then replaced the memory with the new Kingston in slot 1, 2, 3
One of the sticks in is not working at all and I get the RED LED light no matter what slot I move that chip to. So I am running on 2 of the new Kingston memory chips.
Can I mix the memory and add the 1GB into slot 3 and 4 with slot 1 and 2 full of 2GB chips?
Also how to I run the memory utility again? I went to /system/Library/CoreServices/ and then I see the program Memory Slot Utility.app
How do I run this? I'm used to no spaces and I type ./then program name
I have a Mac Pro 8 core XEON with OSX LION, 22gb Ram, Ati 1gb to conect an Apple Led Cinema 27" anda Apple HD Cinema 23", two hard drives 1tb and 350gb, 2 external hard drives 500 gb, and 1tb. Now frequenly my mac shut down without anyreason, sometimes doesnt start up properly and a i have to restart.
What can i do to solve this problem?
I have my mac pro and all the other thins conected to an UPS.
ok so i suppose the inevitable had to happen. and so my mac OS X crashed badly within a few days of my getting this new MBP!
i had a short word document open in 1 workspace some firefox tabs in another, and was checking out the movies in my ext HDD (formatted with NTFS).and suddenly i start seeing this multi colored round icon which i guess is the cousin of the windows hourglass. after trying unsuccessfully to force quit, i was forced to hut down using the boot up button. yes, the same procedure that wreaks havoc on the HDD.
- so my questions are - what to do if even force quit doesn't work ? its surprising that it didn't in this case, as i have used ubuntu for almost 3 years and never had the OS crash on me! of course there were a few application crashes but the force quit always worked. and there was the keyboard shortcut - Ctrl+Alt+Del.
- also what is the norm with macs in this regard ? do they crash often and for the flimsiest of reasons as in my case ?
- probably i am not aware of the Mac OS equivalent for the Ctrl+Alt+Del function that almost always works in ubuntu. so is there some key combination that is guaranteed to work in the even that even force quit does not?
I started to notice that my Mac Pro beeps. It is every so often with no rhyme or reason. I first started to notice it when I was booted to XP, but it is also doing it in OS X. I assume it is coming out of the internal speaker.

View 24 Replies View RelatedWhat could be the cause of an '08 Pro waking up for no particularly good reason, and seemingly never going to sleep? Say I'm working or playing on one of my Dells with the Pros slept, at random times I'll hear the Pros wake up. Also despite setting the sleep timer at 2 hours, if I leave the Pros running I never come back to find it slept. I have similar issues under Windows sometimes so I've not been very worried about that, but what concerns me is that it wakes up when I explicitly send it to sleep.
I'm pretty diligent about shutting down apps I'm not using, and really all I'd send the Pros to sleep with is with Office components running. I have no problems with my other previous and current Macs (although the Air is the only other Leopard machine right now) so am a little puzzled. The MX1000's I use on the Pros are holstered when I manually put the machines to sleep and nothing goes near the keyboard.
I doubt it is a hardware issue - I have two at home, and spilled beer over one of them recently (oops) and swapped it out for another more recent one which I brought back home. The first thing I did was to restore the beered Pro's install and I just heard it do the same thing. I'm fairly certain it's some configuration or software problem but I wondered if anyone had any quick answers before I started rooting around for the cause.
The first problem, which is what I named the thread for, is that for no reason, while sitting on a desk, doing disk intensive work, the drive clicks fairly loudly and seems to spin down, causing delays. Is it a faulty drive, or can this be fixed via software?
The second may be related to the first. When watching somewhat large movie files (>600mb), the video skips for about 30 seconds every 30 minutes. While this may not seem like much, it is incredibly annoying. Is this because of the speed of the drive, or is it faulty? Coming from a 500gb 7200rpm external for my iMac, I never experienced either of these problems, although I suspect the first has something to do with the motion sensor in the MBP.
Where can I go to find the reason why the system froze up? This is the first time I've had pus the power button and do a hard reset since installing SL a month ago.

Since i've installed Yosemite, I noticed that my fans are always running on high level (6000rpm) for no reason. As soon as I open it the cpu starts overheating (between 195 and 205 degrees) even if there's no apps using significant energy. I already tried to reset the SMC or the PRAM with no results.

A few days ago I found that launchd was constantly using around 14% of my CPU (via iStat), which drastically lowered my battery life and caused my CPU to reach 75 degrees Celsius and higher. Initially I thought that SL just needed to do something, so I ignored it. But it has persisted for a few days now, so I decided to do something about it.
I checked the Console and nothing appeared to be repeating itself, so what I did was use MainMenu to perform a batch of system maintenance tasks, and then left my Mac on overnight to see what Console would report. Besides hourly instances of "kernel" running "iCalHelper" and "SubmitDiagInfo", there was nothing else.
However, launchd lowered its CPU usage to about 3%, but it is still constant and my CPU is still at a constant 40-50%. Activity Monitor says the following processes are (constantly) taking only 1-4% of the CPU:
coreservicesd
launchd
mds
WindowServer
disnoted
activitymonitord
...and others
The CPU is reported as 35% User and 20% System. But I am not running anything besides Activity Monitor.
But other programs still running fine? On my OSX partition only 4 free gigs left. Could this be the problem? I miss firefox, but alas I'm stuck using chrome.
