MacBook Pro :: HDD Clicking For No Reason?

Jul 16, 2009

The first problem, which is what I named the thread for, is that for no reason, while sitting on a desk, doing disk intensive work, the drive clicks fairly loudly and seems to spin down, causing delays. Is it a faulty drive, or can this be fixed via software?

The second may be related to the first. When watching somewhat large movie files (>600mb), the video skips for about 30 seconds every 30 minutes. While this may not seem like much, it is incredibly annoying. Is this because of the speed of the drive, or is it faulty? Coming from a 500gb 7200rpm external for my iMac, I never experienced either of these problems, although I suspect the first has something to do with the motion sensor in the MBP.

MacBook Pro :: Harddrive Clicking / And Have The Clicking Noise?

Sep 6, 2010

I may have found a solution for all the people out there who upgraded their hd's to a 7200rpm and have the clicking noise. Apple released a firmware update for the 7200rpm drives that shipped with the uMBP. You can get the file from here.I don't know if this will fix only the hd's shipped with the MBP or any 7200rpm drive but its worth a try.PS: Also i ask that anyone who tries this please report back on your results.

MacBook Pro :: Overheating For No Reason?

Dec 6, 2014

Since i've installed Yosemite, I noticed that my fans are always running  on high level (6000rpm) for no reason. As soon as I open it the cpu starts overheating (between 195 and 205 degrees) even if there's no apps using significant energy. I already tried to reset the SMC or the PRAM with no results.

MacBook Pro :: Randomly Shutting Down For No Reason

Jul 3, 2012

Macbook pro (older style non-unibody) running 10.6.8 has started randomly shutting down instantly for no reason. Sometimes only lasting 30 secs before just shutting off, sometimes up to 10 minutes. Happens when cool or hot, no apparent rhyme or reason. Tried resetting SMC, no difference. Ran software update, thought that had fixed it as it stopped happening for a day, then the problem started up again.

MacBook Pro :: Programs Crashes For No Reason - Faulty RAM?

Jul 2, 2012

Since day one, my laptop has been a little off. It would crash every once in a while for no reason, but it wasn't very often so I took no notice. Now it's just gotten worse with time and programs crash on a daily basis, and the entire laptop crashes on a weekly basis. I can't open a lot of programs, even ones that I have just downloaded right now for the first time. I gave it to the geniuses and they ran a few quick tests and said the OS and the ram seemed to be fine, so they wanted to keep it overnight to take another look. Two days later, they gave it back to me saying the ram is faulty. So I went home and reinstalled the original ram that came with it...but I still have the same problem. I'm wondering if the problem still could be the old ram and it just really messed up my laptop even though it's not in there anymore...?

I do video and photos (hobby, not pro), so I'd like to stay with 7200RPM. Related question: I've read here and there issues w/replacing the internal drive -- that the computer is having trouble recognizing the drive. Is this a real issue, or is it fixed.

MacBook :: Disk Corrupt For No Reason - GCSE's At Stake

Nov 29, 2009

I was using my MacBook (Late 08' Unibody Backlit) listening to a bit of Spotify ect. Shut it down normally. When I booted later on I turned it on and a progress bar comes up goes not very far across at all and starts again. Get's to roughly the same point only to shut down. This has happened consistently. Windows 7 still works though so that rules out a complete Hard Disk failure. I have tried booting from SL DVD and repairing permissions and the disk only to be presented with an error message telling me to backup as many files as I can and restore. (If I new how to backup these files I most certainly would). After this I tried to install SL again (I understand the default is an archive and install) and before it even starts it tells me that it cannot be installed on this disk.

I also reset the PRAM... so the troubleshooting keystrokes work.
