Aug 23, 2014
I am trying to change to a new password but first I must type exactly the password the site has given me. and one of the keyboard characters I do not recognize. It looks like a little crown. where I will find it on the keyboard?

I'm working on a MacBook Air (late 2011 model), along with the Apple Wireless keyboard. The keyboard is a physical AZERTY (French) layout, but I change the mapping to US using the system preferences.  I work in the Terminal a lot, and I can't find the tilde (~) key. When I type where it would be on a US QWERTY layout, the output is the plus-minus (±) sign. When I type Option+N, I get the tilde accent character (˜). Terminal does not interpret the ~ and ˜characters the same.  My question: How can I enter the ~ character from the wireless keyboard? Currently, I reach up to the Air's integrated keyboard and type it there.

I have a new-to-me G3, OS 10.3. The keyboard is set up with foreign characters in place of the following keys: `~[]{}|. (There may be other keys replaced with foreign characters but these are the most problematic). I tried resetting using preferences, international, input but this did not work. How can I restore the keyboard to it's original character set?

I wanted to use the Keyboard & Character Viewer, but it just wouldn't get displayed in the menu bar. I went to system preference, and the box Show Keyboard&Character Viewer in the menu bar is chacked, but nothing is actually displayed.

I just tried to save a file with a rather long name. I got an error message that said I could not use filenames longer than 31 characters, I seem to remember that before I got this computer (iMac 21.5"), I used to have longer filenames than 31 characters! Is my memory faulty or is the operating system, "Mavericks" 10.9.3 deficient in this area, also?Â

With Character Viewer open, the "Pictographs" and the "Emoji" characters appear too small to see their details on my 13" MacBook Pro. Is there a way to make them look bigger so I can see their differences better without having to click on each one?Â

This error notice doesn't make sense, since many of my file names exceed 31 char. This error message pops up when saving documents, esp. web pages. As a consequence, OSX will refuse to let me save the file, until I shorten the name and so remove informative identifying features of the file name. But most of the time, OSX is perfectly happy to save files with names longer than 31 char. How can I get this error notice and block to turn off?

Starting yesterday, at about 6pm CET, I am unable to log into iMessage on Mavericks (10.9.4) -- "Could not sign in. Please check your network connection and try again."
I tried the following, to no avail:reset my AppleID password (and use the new password to try and log in)make sure the system timezone was correctquit iMessage, and rebootverify I could log into iMessage on my iPhoneÂ
Other people around me on the same network can connect just fine, so I am suspecting I may have something to do with the ID itself, which contains a "+".Â

I use the Apple character in Twitter to distinguish myself as an Apple computer user. When someone asked me how I got that in my profile I went through the steps and found that the character was missing from the keyboard and character viewer. Did Apple remove it in Snow leopard or did I do something to lose it? If I can get it back how do I do that?

I dont know where to begin. All of my frustration wants to come up out at once without any particular order! Since Snow Leopard, I have seen this "!" in the airport radar in the menu bar, so politely informing that i will not be able to connect to internet because.... I just received one of the latest model 13" mbps 3 days ago and till yet have not been able to connect to our homes wireless connection once! I dont know if this is a hardware problem or the fault of S.leopard, but after looking online (connected through the ethernet cable) i saw that many many people are having the same problem and it is attributed to S.leopard. I also had that intuition and have been inclined to think that that was the case. I tried every solution i could find online, and everyone i could think of separately (at present i am installing OS 10.5 on an external partition to see how it connects to the wifi...). I also called tech support who were of the opinion that low and behold the Holly Apple could not be at fault, but that it was my router/ modem/ service provider, (even though the two other apple laptops in the house NOT running S.L connect fine, as well as the other PC in the house).

How do you find symbols/characters on a MacBook keyboard? I was on a Mac suited for a small EU country and the characters, like "}" , were just not easy to find. Is there a layout one can have on the screen to find characters and symbols fast?

Is there a piece of software out there that can allow me to find out the key codes of keys that aren't normally on a keyboard. Or a way to figure them out?Or even better, would be a piece of software that allows me to use my multimedia keys on my macbook. The link below is the keyboard and the buttons I am talking about are the six small, circular ones to the right at the top of the keyboard.

So after upgrading to a mbp as my main machine, I retired my old imac to the bedroom for media center duty. I've got things close to how I want them with front row and plex doing most of the dirty work. For my planned use, no keyboard or mouse are needed. A combo of the apple remote and snatch on my itouch are doing quite well. The problem is, if I turn the machine off, it sees no mouse or keyboard over usb, and attempts to find them over bluetooth. Does anyone know how I can get rid of this? I've tried just turning bluetooth off before shutdown, but this doesn't seem to solve it. This is REALLY annoying, as I'd prefer to keep the machine off more often rather than having is sleep all the time.
