OS X Mavericks :: Restoring After Erasing Disk
Jun 2, 2014
I tried to install Mavericks and it told me my disk had been damaged and needed to be repaired. I took it into the Genius bar, he wiped my disk and told me when I got home to plug in my backup harddrive and click restore and it should be resolved. But I did the restore, created a new profile and everything and I can find my backup folder because my harddrive is plugged in, but don't know how to get everything from that folder back onto the computer, and back in its rightful place. i.e. pictures back in iPhoto, songs back in iTunes

I was restoring my MacBook pro to its factory setting by erasing the disk and reinstalling OS X lion via internet. But it is failing telling me that my network is very slow while I used the best network in my area. How should I get an OS X lion to my CP? Is it possible to get it from another MacBook pro? Or is it possible to recover the erased OS X Lion without or with external disc?

I have a 640GB external USB hard drive that I use for time machine currently. I would like to go in and add a partition to load movies to and plug it into my PS3. Can I use disk utility to create a new partition without erasing the stuff already on the disk?
And then is it possible to format a partition larger than 32GB as FAT?

I did the upgrade from Snow Leopard to Lion. I've been having random issues like it seems to go to sleep (all monitors go black) and when I close the lid; the light goes on (but doesn't blink like normal sleep). Or during wake-up from sleep, after everything appears, it does the same thing. The only thing I can do it hold down the power button, wait, and restart. Today I'm on my 4 1/2 crash/reboot. (.5 because during a reboot, it locked up again.) I was thinking that maybe a re-install might fix something, but I'm not sure. When I originally did the upgrade, I had a DisplayLink driver installed which Lion moved to the Unsupported folder; don't know if this is part of my problem or not.

I appear to be getting more and more available HDD space on my Mac despite not actually deleting anything.
Yesterday it looked like approx 30GB was freed up and today about another 25GB.

I installed Ubuntu on my iMac, and it made 2 new partitions: DISK0S3 and Linux Swap. Here's what my disk utlity looks like: When I try to remove Linux Swap, it says that the partition (map is too small. When I try to remove DISK0S3, nothing happens and it keeps running forever before I press +Q to quit.

For some reason when I'm trying to erase a CD in Disk Utilities, after clicking the "Erase" tab, every button under it is disabled. Including the "Erase" button. I tried various CD-R's, what's the deal?

I just got my new i5 iMac. I have migrated my data to the new computer. Can I erase my time capsule so as to start fresh? If I can, do I erase it with disk utility? Is this even a smart thing to do?

I've been backing up my Powerbook G4 for a few months using Time Machine to an external firewire drive with two partitions; one for the backups, and a much larger one for all my music, video, pictures, etc. I got a new mac mini over the weekend and I want to format the Time Machine partition without erasing the one with all my other files so I can start backing up the Mini.
Is this possible using Disk Utility? If so, how?
Both computers are running Leopard.

After backing up my data and then swiping my hard drive using Disk Utility, my OS seems to have been uninstalled as well. Is there a way to recover the deleted information and go back to the last working configuration? I'm on a MBP IC2D 2.16 w/ Lion.

I have a mid-2011 iMac (with Mavericks OS), and am doing a clean install before giving my computer to a relative. I performed a secure erase of my entire harddrive (using disk utility), reset the NVRAM / PRAM (but it only chimes once even after I tried several times), and now I get the grey screen even when I try to boot from CD, safe boot, or any other commands. I can't even get back into the disk utility.
On a side note, I have the install DVD in the DVD drive and I can't get that out.

Files remain after "erasing" disk iMac 10.6.x. I'm trying to reinstall leopard and for some reason 2 folders and 2 files (totaling 90mb) were left on. I'm thinking this is just preprogrammed files for my HD but just want to make sure this is the case and not some lingering 'infected' files.

I'm upgrading my MBP hard drive - I currently have it partitioned into two 120GB drives (Mac/Bootcamp). My new hard drive will be a bigger size - can I boot off the install CD and restore to a new sized partition? Or does the partition need to be the same size?

I had to give up my Macbook Pro and am now going back to my Macbook. I have everything loaded on a Time Machine backup, but am having trouble getting to my Macbook. I bought a Leopard Install DVD back when they were released, but when I pulled it out I saw it is now scratched. Can I use a Macbook Pro Leopard install disk to restore my Time Machine backup to a Macbook? If not, is there any way to completely restore a computer from a Time Machine backup without an install disk?

So my mom just bought an iMac from her friend's mother, and I'm trying to restore it to factory settings using the Installation disks that came with my MacBook Pro. I just inserted the discs and clicked "Install Mac OS X" and then it gives me a "Restart" button, but I cannot restart it without putting in the Password which I do not have. Is there another way to do this?

I recently decided to partition my hard drive on my macbook in order to install Windows 7, but upon doing so I was greeted with a message informing me that some files couldn't be moved and that I would have to reformat my HD. I created a backup disk image using disk utility and proceeded to erase and reinstall my OS. My OS is now reinstalled but I don't know how to go about using my backup to add all my old preferences, files, and applications. I've tried using restore through the disk utility but it isn't allowing me to do so. All I want are my old files and the ability to partition my drive!

I've been searching for a keystroke to restore an application or a window of an application that I've minimized (Command-M) to the Dock. My search has not been successful.
With some applications Command-1 will work, but not often.
I'm wondering if there is a standard key combination to do this. If not, I know I can create a user keyboard shortcut, but I don't know how to create the black diamond character or if that would even work.

Recently my iCloud account was hacked and all my Contacts were erased. This also caused all my Contacts on my iPhone and iMac to be erased as well. I can restore my Contacts from a Time Machine Back up to my iMac "Address Book", however as soon as I connect back to iCloud, all the contacts are erased. I tried to restore my iPhone from an earlier iPhone backup which restored everything, as far as I know, except the Contacts. I don't have a huge number of contacts or groups, so I don't care if the group information is lost. There seems to be some conflicting information on how to do this correctly, so I'm asking what the current best practice is to restore all my contacts from a Time Machine Backup to iCloud.

Every time my iMac restarts or boots up, it brings me to the OS X installer page since last night.
I have done the disk utility check and my hard drive is ok. I then tried restoring from network which stops half way and reboot. I have also tried restoring from Time Machine but it has also stopped and rebooted several times.
My iMac is currently running OS 10.9.3

I have wiped my hard disk clean and reinstalled Lion. I don't want to restore the whole shebang from my Time Machine backup because I want my apps to be installed clean. So my first question is about restoring my mail. I understand that I should make Mail my current application, then click on "Enter Time Machine."When I do that, I see "Today" which is my current setup - nothing much on my computer. I try to go back in time, but I can't because Time Machine thinks "Today" is the only existing backup. How can I get Time Machine to restore Mail from my hard drive before it was wiped clean?

I have a time machine backup I need to restore. It's a backup from an external drive that has failed.
When I go "enter time machine," I can't see the contents from the external drive anymore to restore it.. because the external drive isn't mounted. It's not mounted because it has failed. I can see when I browse the TM backup directly via finder there are files from the amounted drive in the backup... as I'd expect.
So... How do I restore drives from an unmounted external drive?
Do I need to buy a new drive and name it the same as the old drive? Then will it show up?
